Shelling Trans OCs

Jun 14, 2016

    1. I'm curious, has anyone made a trans oc with their doll? Did you buy them their desired gender or bought the one they were born with.

    2. yeah! why not? i really like the idea.. in fact i was thinking on something similar.

    3. I have one trans doll at the moment. :) She's a WIP right now though
Morgan is a non-binary trans woman. She is gonna be on a male body, because of the fantasy setting of the universe, but I also don't think she is 100% against her body. She has some dysphoria but in varying degrees. Morgan is an IOS Anos.
Besides that, I have plans of bringing home a character, I had once. He's a binary trans guy, and like Morgan, he'll be on a female body, because transition isn't possible. He'll be an Iplehouse HID Bella with small bust, if all goes well!

    4. My first doll is going to be a trans guy.
The doll I've got picked out is a male body, but not super masculine or manly -- it's pretty androgynous and I think that's perfect for my character.

I feel like because within the canon of our game, he has rather small breasts and binds anyway, it wouldnt make sense to have a female doll body for him.

    5. I have a couple but they're both non-binary, one was on a boy body to start with and just started leaning towards nb, the other I still have to pick a body for and I'm thinking for the character that they're AFAB but I might get a boy body because they bind and pack. If I have a trans boy or girl in future it'd depend where in their transition they are/whether they go for op or not

    6. I had always planned to make one; my first doll was actually going to be one. I bought a boy that I wanted to be a girl. I had him that way for a long while before I ended up changing his character, but that's the way he was when I got my first doll!

    7. Ive seen a lot of trans/fluid/etc dolls around, its not uncommon!

    8. Cheers to @Wolfie Pie for the shout out - nearly all my dolls are trans, actually - I haven't gotten around to giving them all modified bodies, yet, nor do I think I will for all of them, because trans bodies aren't always about taking the assigned-gender body and doing some modifications. One of my lot is trans, but is tall and muscular - and I think it's important to keep in mind that trans bodies can look like a great range of things :) I'm super excited to see what you'll do, though! The beauty of bjds is, to my mind, their infinite scope for modification and customisation, and damn I love me some trans dollies.

    9. Oh this makes me a lot less nervous about having a trans bjd :D!

    10. Ahhhh i love it when I hear of people making trans characters! Its wonderful for creating more diversity. We sorely need more representation...

I have a few trans dollies planned myself, but money is stopping me from being able to buy them haha.

On another note, I agree with the others, I'd love to see what you come up with!!! Best of luck ♡

      • x 5
    11. I wish I could see photos of your trans dollies as I have one plan in mind. :D

    12. I have a doll who is gender fluid, and has some slight mods to a small bust female body, to be androgynous. I also have another character who I haven't shelled yet, who's currently transitioning, and he'll get a modded female body. His character isn't yet finalized, so I don't yet know which. In my other universe, body swapping is legitimately a thing, so a fair number of the characters are trans or fluid, and will go in Non-modded bodies.

      • x 2
    13. I have a few trans dolls, they're not on modified bodies. While I have ummed and ahhed over it for a while, I don't actually know any trans people who have undergone full gender reassignment surgery (I know a couple of guys who've had breast removals though), so I didn't think it was terribly important to ensure my dolls had 'post surgery' bodies. One is a trans girl on a female body, one is a NB individual on a male body, and one is a trans girl on a male body. I have a couple of other gender non-conforming dolls, but I wouldn't consider them trans really.

I think that it's really up to you how you want to portray your doll as trans. I talk with my trans friends about it (several of them are in the hobby) and make sure I'm not doing something inadvertently offensive, but other than that I just go with my gut. I'm lucky to have a large number of trans friends so I've learned a lot about their experiences and the different perspectives of different people. For me, I'm not usually a huge fan of heavily modded dolls (I don't dislike them, I actually think they're awesome, I just don't feel a desire to own them) so for me it was something that I didn't especially want to do, or feel was necessary. I love that there are a lot of different kinds of trans dolls out there, just like there are a lot of different kinds of trans people. :) I do eventually want to sand off my trans girl's penis, but I've already had her for like over five years so I'm clearly not desperate to get that done

@Lupie_Stardust I hadn't seen your boy's mods before but WOW you nailed it! Beautiful work :aheartbea

    14. I'm not sure what the OC means in the original post but I would make a trans doll. I want something more than a head swap or dressing boy doll in girl clothes.

    15. Hey, cheers! I agree with you about representation of trans bodies - we trans people have a huge variety of bodies, so it's nice to have trans dolls that aren't all modified, or only a little modified, as well as "cis swap" ones. Obviously for personal reasons I enjoy more variant-bodied dolls.

I'm going to share a couple of pictures because I.. can't not, really...

      [IMG] [IMG]

This is Vicious! He's a Little Rebel Jelle on a Dollzone 58cm body that I've heavily (but not completely) mastectomised. Isn't he gorgeous? I am really obsessed with this body and I'll definitely be buying another for another of my lovely boys. It's got a good balance of delicate arms and really strong-looking thighs and the contoured underbust of the chest joint doesn't look as weird as I thought it would when the breasts are sanded.

      • x 14
    16. He's stunning!! Honestly one of the things that turned me away from wanting my dolls modded was what you mentioned in your thread about the 'top down' method of sanding that leaves the breasts looking really peculiar, I think I would be way more interested if I had one done your way because they look fantastic!

    17. Thank you! :) It's really nice to have people who are very receptive to body variance in dolls, especially as the market as it stands is still quite prescriptive in terms of how it labels anatomical set-ups and so on, but that's a wider society problem, obviously ;)

Yeah, you gotta sand them towards the nipple (wherever you want the nipple to sit) like you're sharpening a pencil. Then you can round everything off in circles. Doing saggy breasts is actually easier than doing perky ones, for some reason. I still need to perfect making very small wide-set breasts - getting the sternum down flat from The Big Round Cleavage is very challenging..!

    18. I have a few, and my general rule of thumb is that if the character is old enough to likely have transitioned fully, I'll get them in a body that fits their post-op look. If the character is too young to have had surgery, I get them in the body assigned at birth. So I have one who's supposed to be about 27-28, so she has a female body. And then I have one who's supposed to be about 16-17, so she has a male body.

    19. I'm trans and get really happy when I see people making trans ocs. I have a trans girl oc and some genderqueer ocs, and the trans girl I'm saving up for will have a body with breasts etc. because she's medically transitioned. My trans boy oc has a similar body because he has not medically transitioned. So I guess it depends :)

    20. At least one of my dolls is a binary trans person. Her name is Rose, she'll be on a Doll Chateau Fergus + A-body-04 (a male body).
The only reason I keep her with a male body is because in-character she never had the opportunity to transition via processes like HRT and SRS, but that doesn't stop her from presenting herself as she truly is. She's still a beautiful lady in my eyes, and in her girlfriend's.:chibi
There's also Moonsong, who is non-binary, she's agender, but she uses female pronouns to keep others at ease. If we go into more detail, the fact is she's an alien and physically has no sex (not male nor female).

    21. I'm just really happy to see this thread (both as a trans person myself & as somebody who loves dolls with diverse bodies) - it often seems like there's a lot of really casual cissexism in the BJD world & I'm relieved to see other trans folks talking about their dolls! Also glad that cis folks with trans dolls in this thread are listening to their trans friends.

My first (and only, at the moment) doll is cis, I guess? Which sort of struck me as a surprise, seeing as most of my existing characters are some kind of trans, but really I just fell in love with a sculpt (DIM Larina) and the character kind of followed. Her gender may develop more in the future, who knows.

I love seeing mods of trans dolls - has anyone done mastectomy scars or put together a female-assigned torso with a male-assigned pelvis, etc? I feel like there's a lot of potential with BJDs to create really beautiful combinations. Eventually I'd love to get into sculpting, I always want to see more diversity in terms of body size, disability, gender, etc.

My Alexei is genderfluid. I'm non-binary myself so it makes me happy to see the representation within the hobby :)

      • x 5
    23. I have a trans OC (FtM), I don't have them in doll form yet but for them I'm planning to get a biologically male doll as the character has transitioned (if there were some more androgynous female bodies I might have decided differently, but most of the ones I see are pretty decidedly feminine, which even with my character's non transitioned body he wouldn't have been. So medical transition it is!)
Otherwise I have some non binary characters like Aleksei who is AMAB but more of an androgynous/agender person. So I have them on a male body. I think it all depends on the character, some may have characters that can't or don't want to medically transition, some may have transitioned in their story like mine, etc. :)

    24. I'm thinking about putting mastectomy scars onto my FtM character when I get his doll form. I've never done real modding before so I'm a bit scared and I might just see if I can paint them on so as to have less chance of damaging the doll (really want him as a Volks SD or SDGr boy and they're not too cheap... >~< )

    25. I'm really glad I sort of revived this sort of stagnant thread because it's nice seeing other people commenting here again! It's especially encouraging see others trans people in the community, and seeing all of us, and our trans-dollies, being accepted with such ease! :cheer
And even the cisgendered folks being so respectful to their trans-dollies, and informing themselves so aptly!

    26. Oh my god I have a nonbinary Aleksei as well (spelled a bit different but :XD:) I love that. Your Alexei looks great :D

    27. I've had a trans woman doll, and a genderfluid one in the past.

The trans woman doll had a very slender male body (old Dollzone 70cm), but when dressed usually passed easily as female. She also had a female faceup and only owned feminine clothing. The character opted not to have any surgeries at all, though always identified as female.

The genderfluid doll also had a very slender male body (Doll Chateau Kid), and alternated between dressing very feminine, very masculine, or androgynous. Preferred pronouns and gender identity changed regularly, though the character was assigned male at birth and tended to use male pronouns more often than female.

    28. I have plans for my dolls to have various genders. I think it is a great idea for expression with creativity and a great way to represent the real world.

(As a mother my daughter's future rests in how we make the home world around her full of variety. I even plan on getting her transgendered dolls as she grows up because as my husband and I figured: we don't know what her gender is, because she is two. She should have a positive image of all people. Actually she does have a non resin bjd she loves. We are waiting for her to tell us what they are.)

      • x 3
    29. Oh! I have a little trans girl character. Long story short, she was somewhere where she had no choice but to be her birth gender, and then was able to go back to her "True Home". And found that the folk there didn't really care if she said she was a girl, just accepted it as fact. She's around 8, so she wouldn't be able to physically transition yet. But sadly I decided she was trans after I ordered her, so she has a female body.

Another doll of mine is proooobably some kind of male-aligned nonbinary. But he doesn't really care to specify, he's got more important things to do.

And I currently have an agender (and physically sexless) character I want to shell, but it's probably gonna be a while before that can happen. They're chubby, have a gender-neutral body, annnnd three eyes..... not exactly the easiest things to find, even if I hybrid >.>

    30. I'm not sure about the body, but I know Only Kids, Loong Boy has three eyes!

    31. What A_Grand_Leaf said ^. Loong Dragon from Only Kids has 3 eyes! I have him. He is wonderful. :) I have his character being asexual. As for chubby, he is rather thin, so you might need to mod or hybrid?

    32. ooh! another sculpt with the eye being vertical! i was looking at 5stardoll Dark since I also want grey skin, (why must this character be how they are) but I don't think they offer grey as of recent

    33. It is possible to dye the doll yourself, I think there's a tutorial here on DoA in the workshop :) Of course, if you're new to modding then I understand how intimidating that is!

    34. @TheBodyVolcanic They're adorable! I think Aleksei/Alexei is a great gender-neutral name (if more on the male side.) I wish my own name was more androgynous *_*

    35. My one transgender character is Arial (like the font, not the mermaid).

I used a male Doll Legend body that I modded to be female mostly because I wanted her to be very muscular (she's got kind of a biker gang look to her--I was reading a bit about the Bikers Against Child Abuse at the time after watching a documentary about them, and I found a huge online source of authentic Soviet feminist tattoos online that inspired me to try tattoos on a doll). She's going to have an entire leather wardrobe, which is a nice contrast to the uniform she wore earlier in life.

I think I also wanted to try a FtM mod, and used this as an excuse to try a different, more natural (although "natural" has a wide range of styles) breast silhouette (a nice change from the crazy breasts that some dolls seem to have which seem to levitate). I wanted her shallow and wide-rooted, which is a breast shape that can sometimes result from hormone replacement.

I know someone with this breast type, and I was always very jealous that she could wear clothing without a bra and walk down stairs pain free. I'm glad to have a doll I can live vicariously through in this small way! As a result, I'm going to give her a spaghetti strap top for one of her outfits just because I can.

    36. It's so cool hearing about all the different ways that people approach trans characters in resin!

My boy Zach is trans, and for him I chose to stick with an unmodified small-bust Unoa body. As a character, he's chosen not to pursue any medical or surgical procedures because he feels strongly that his identity is no one's business but his. No one else gets to decide whether or not he's "proven" his gender, and no one else gets to tell him how he should or shouldn't express it. He's comfortable with his body for the most part. It's his, and he's a man, so it's a man's body. I made a little tiny epoxy packer that he wears in some pants, but not others, and it's important to me that he can wear or not. He also has a fitted tank top that serves as a binder to smooth out his chest under other clothes, although as flat as Unoa bodies are it's not super necessary :)

    37. I absolutely LOVE Arial's character concept and would love to see photos of her with her tattoos!

    38. @hellomagpie

Aww! Thanks! Im on mobile right now, and a couple states away from this doll, but I'll see if I have some pictures stored on my computer tonight!

I really like her and her character--she doesn't let herself be intimidated, and I wish in some ways I was more like that!

Edit: I don't seem to have any close ups of the tattoos. Here is the only photo I have of the body with tattoos:

The naked woman you see is feminist graffiti found on a wall in--I think Cairo, but I haven't been able to find a definitive source. I wanted Arial's tattoos to represent the struggle that women face all over the world, rather than limiting their meaning to one particular type of feminism or perspective.

Here is the reference photo of the tattoo on her shoulder--I think it says "I'll make you remember me," but I have a thing about writing words when I don't actually know the meaning, so I just used the image as inspiration. I think, If I remember, I changed the horse's neck and woman's pose a bit in mine.

I'm still debating on whether to redo the tattoos so that they are more cohesive and more original, although I will still use graffiti and tattoos from different places as inspiration. I wanted to work the gold writing into the tattoos more as well.

I like Eurydice as sort of the foundational inspiration for this character, but her name and personality are actually more closely inspired by a character created by Isabel Allende who chose her own name too, "Belisa Crepusculario." Belisa also leaves a restrictive society and learns that words, and the concepts they describe, have power.

By learning to create her own stories, Belisa sort of "flips the script," on the societal expectations forced upon her, and teaches this means of acquiring freedom to others through her storytelling. The power of determining one's future is transferred from society to Belisa herself, who can now write her own "story."

Ideally, the tattoos and golden script would work together like an Illuminated manuscript, to tell the story of Arial's life. They would combine the history of her parents people, who abandoned her as a baby under mysterious circumstances; of her adoptive city, who originally raised her as a boy, but eventually recognized her as a girl; and her new family, who provided her the freedom (or need) to become her own person, and a kind of a hero.

    39. I bought the one they were born with. I haven't really planned everything out just yet. :whee:

    40. I have a trans OC I would love to shell as a doll in the future! She's part of a Magical Girl trio. I don't see getting her any time soon but that's all right. I've really been mulling over what sort of hybrid I want to do. I know I want her on a non-modified "male" body though.

    41. For dolls, I only have one trans OC right now, Vissarion. He's amab and gender fluid. Right now I'm trying to finish his A (male) Look, before moving into his B (female) Look. His verse is pre-modern and medical transitioning isn't a thing, so he won't get modded or anything. One of my some day-dolls, the Doll Love Beata, is going to be based on a historical figure and will also be a transwoman... random fun fact: between my bro and I, all of our SD ladies, present and future, are transwomen. (We have no transmen for some reason...)

Also Otakar, my Spiritdoll Lemongrass, is intersex but cisgender, so related but not the same. :XD:

    42. My first big modification was sanding the breasts off a Mirodoll 60cm girl! Liam is a gnc trans man and I think he looks pretty good!

    43. Most of my characters that I’ve considered shelling aren’t human at all culturally or physically, so although they might be something like trans or cis by their culture’s standards, they don’t map perfectly to our own concepts of trans or cis in Western culture. For instance, Murmur, an ant woman, is a Queen ant, which in ant culture is seen as a gender (along with Worker and Drone); you’re not really assigned Queenhood at birth, but in adolescence, so that’s trans in one sense, but it’s very different from our culture where gender is assigned at birth and not being that gender is looked down on...

I do have a naga trans man character who I want to shell (the naga conception of gender in my fantasy world is pretty similar to the predominant Western concept) but I don’t have money for a body for him yet. >_>

And Chalcedony is a trans woman, but I haven’t seen a body I like for her on account of the fact that I really want her in 1/8 scale that would fit her current clothes and props well to replace the non-BJD I have her shelled as now. I’m happy to do mods as needed, so it doesn’t matter if it’s originally intended as a female or male body (her plastic doll body is hybridized from different plastic dolls with some pieces from either), but the scale is touchy.

    44. My next doll project is a FtM to be Cherry's partner. He won't be post-surgery at all, but we're definitely talking presenting as male.

    45. My doll is trans! He's FTM. I didn't modify the body at all -- I bought a male body which looked relatively androgynous, and picked up some nice trans pins from a local convention. I think I'm going to add surgery scars at some point, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

    46. I have an OC named Columbine who I wanted to shell, and while I was looking around at bodies and face molds for her, I found that I really preferred more elegant/noble looking 'masculine' molds for her look, so I ended up ordering a 'boy' doll for her (Luts Model Delf Bliss, faceup 2 with slender body type). She wasn't originally explicitly trans, but she is now! She works as a groundskeeper at a graveyard and lives onsite, and she's a bit of a shut-in girl who prefers to keep to herself. She's not really the type of person to experience much dysphoria or feel the need to medically transition past hormone treatment, so it's not really an issue if her body is 'masculine,' and I think the slender body looks fairly androgynous anyway. I'm really excited for her to arrive.

    47. I don’t have trans. But I crossdress my minifee woosoo and dream of doll tender too and boy they are so cute :love

    48. I plan to have at least two established trans/non-binary OCs shelled as bjds. Currently, only one of those two is shelled.

Azabien, who's my non-binary OC, was born literally gender fluid—with the innate ability to change their physical form at birth. Azabien tends to use neutral they/them pronouns as they weren't born either distinctly male or female. I have them on the Resinsoul slender 70cm body, as it is rather slender and shapely for a supposed male body. The RS body has some curve to the hips, and it also has more rounded and softer pecs—which look look closer to A-cup breasts than male pecs to be honest. It allows Azabien to have a rather androgynous appearance.

I only have plans for the other one at the moment, but I eventually plan to shell my other trans-male OC, Qaiden, on a Star Male Impldoll body, with Impl's Plaice head sculpt being the one I eventually plan to use for him. Qaiden will be a fully transitioned male at the age I plan to shell him at, having gone through transition at a younger age.

In-universe, there is a particular group (nation, society? I'm blanking on the correct word) who's particular magical specialty is fluidly themed—including physical transformation (shape-shifting). Many individuals from that group are capable of changing their physical appearance and gender at will (it's a skill that takes practice to master to varying degrees depending on the individual), while some have a specialized talent in providing others with physical transformations to a degree. An individual with the ability has very little set limits to their own physical transformations, but there are some limitations to the transformations/transitions they can do on others. In Qaiden's case—that means that he is outwardly physically male for the most part. That's the furthest extend the transition could go, however. (I could go further, but the explanation gets rather long and complex).

I'm taking some liberties considering both are from a magically based fantasy world, but they are both in essence trans/non-binary. It's a bit of an extension of myself, as I have only more recently come to the realization that I am genderfluid (I'm still learning a lot about the concept, as it seems gender/sex identities are constantly evolving as society grows to further understand them).

    49. Yep! Of course! Fuyuki is a pretty young child who was born male but quickly started identifying as a female. Her story is one about growing up into your identity and she is the only trully transgender character in my doll family.

Then there is Yukihiko who identifies as both male and female. They were born male and use male, female and neutral pronouns interchangeably. Parfait on the other hand are the complete opposite. They are a gender neutral individual born female, they don't identify as male or female and generally dislike being addressed as anything but neutral, or people making assumptions about their gender.

    50. I currently have a trans doll in my possession (although I will be gifting him to a friend), I gave him top surgery scars as part of his body blushing :)

    51. I hadn't considered sanding down a chest for use as a male or neutral doll but it makes sense and has appeal. I'm not in love with any of the male sculpts I've seen as I tend to prefer a more lithe body shape. All my characters are bigender, hermaphrodites, or gender fluid, so the idea has a lot of charm.

I plan in general to buy "female" bodies but for sure the characters going into them will not be girls.

    52. I have a doll whose character is trans. I didn't plan a character for him before he came; I rarely do that with my dolls. His sculpt is typically used for female characters, but when he arrived, I got distinctively masculine "vibes" from him. I tried to put him in one feminine outfit after another, and none of them felt right. Finally I came up with a masculine character design for him, and that went swimmingly. Now he has a masculine outfit custom made just for him, and a beard, and I couldn't be happier with him.

      • x 1
    53. I have a Doll Chateau Nicola-A fullset on layaway, and he told me that he was a transboy, despite having been born female. I'm not actually going to modify him physically in any way, but he will wear a binder and clothes to make him look outwardly male. I'm not sure if I'm going to change his canon wig in any way, I'll know more details, including his name, once he comes home.

I also have Ryuma aka Reyna, an OC that's genderfluid, but they more often than not dresses male. As a male, he's shy, quiet and withdrawn, but when she's female, she's open, self-assured and an extrovert. She comes out when they're in situations where she needs to be strong in the public's eyes, which often happens since Ryuma/Reyna is a mangaka/manga artist.

    54. OC means "origional character." :)

Yes, my thoughts too! I really love seeing so much love and interest in creative expression with trans characters and dolls...I was thinking about this last week, I feel like collecting, especially modding, dolls causes this objective mindset around bodies. I'm so happy to see others interested in all different body types for dolls, because it helps those that match that feel more celebrated!

I have several trans and genderfluid characters, and I love to do hybrids of feminine bodies with masculine faces and vice versa. It really helps create a unique look that you otherwise wouldn't be able to get!

    55. I actually have an idea for a trans doll I've been super excited about but haven't had the chance to gush about yet! I plan to buy a Mystic Kids Romeo X to fit the trans girl character I came up with; a young aspiring model who loves both cute girly fashion and casual androgynous fashion. I have a whole wardrobe wishlist picked out for her, as well as the wigs I'll use to represent the hairstyles she changes between for her different looks.
Also, as a trans person myself, it always makes me happy to see other trans people in the BJD community! I love seeing all the amazing creative characters everyone has made.

    56. Yes! I have many trans ocs though I currently only have one of them as a doll. The character's name is Desirée and she is a trans girl. I originally didn't intend for her to be trans, I just wanted her to be taller than my other girl msd dolls, which is why I got her a male body, but then I figured it made more sense to simply make her trans. I haven't modded the body and I don't plan on doing so. She's on a male Dollzone msd body that has a fairly androgynous look to it, and I think it works wonderfully for her.

    57. Currently both of my resin-babies are cis, but I have had my eye on AoD Chun Zhe lately, and I would totally make her trans if she "tells" me she is. (It sounds weird, but I kinda "listen" to the faceup and doll mold and flesh out the character AFTER I receive the doll.) After all, I'm not cis, so my dolls don't have to be either!

    58. Everyone else put a lot more thought into their trans OCs bodies than I did. I'm not comfortable enough modding to try things on my dolls even though I'd probably be happier with more body variety (like an overweight male body but hey). BUT I also have a few trans characters! It was easiest for me to just buy the bodies that best fit their characters (and reflected their identities "post op" so to speak) so a woman-shaped body for my transwoman and a man-shaped body for my transman. I took time to consider the look of the bodies: my transman has a less steroidy body, to reflect him living in a world where medical transitioning isn't possible yet; my transwoman happens to have a muscular body because I loved the look of it and she's a kickass space pirate anyway so... I also have a nonbinary character who's on a male-shaped body because it happened to be available but I dress them in cute and androgynous clothing because that's what they'd look best in. They're also the doll wearing their NB pin which I think resonates with people who see them out in the world.

    59. as a trans guy i would never own a trans doll that had the "wrong" body i.e an afab on a female body or a amab on a male body due to my own issues with dysphoria, i do have a trans girl character who i might one day shell though and one of my upcoming dolls is genderqueer but most my characters are cis lol
