Has anyone gotten any Shadow High dolls? I really would love to get Shanelle Onyx and Luna Madison. I don't want to support MGA, which is why I haven't gotten them yet, but I am close to caving
My sibling collects them! I think they look so cute but I just don't have display space for a collection. I already had to part with my full Monster High series. Broke my heart. But I adore seeing photos from the Rainbow and Shadow High lines
I'm trying really hard not to become a major collector of the Rainbow High dolls- mostly because they're $30 a pop and I already spend enough on BJDs. The Shadow High line, however, got me good. I bought three of them the moment I saw them in stores: Shanelle, Heather, and Natasha. They just look so good together on the shelf...
I have 4, they are great. I love that they literally look like a black and white photo, it is amazing how they achieved it, especially with Luna and Ash.
I am tempted by a few, due to their grayscale coloring, mostly the doll itself (not the fashions). However, I am not into their facial features. I got one of the RH dolls that was on clearance on Amzn for a lot less than retail, to repaint to see if I would like them better, but I just can't seem to find them appealing. They are so flat from profile, and every feature is round (the nose is particularly weirdly sculpted IMHO). I love the OMG ones, despite their features being probably as flat and even more round, but I prefer their painted eyes. I am not a fan of how Western mass-produced dolls with inset eyes are produced (the eyeliner and lashes are part of the eyeball, which are often not even balls). That's what I find the least appealing (along with the lips), the eyes look so lifeless to me and the fact that they look sunken in, when they are completely blank is probably what killed the deal for me. Still, if I find the ones I want from SH on clearance or sale, I might get one or two, just because I love the grayscale element of the dolls. It's not like I need more playscale fashion dolls to collect, with Barbie Looks, Extra and Fashionistas, I have plenty on my plate as is (and steadily running out of hoarding room).
I have seen all the Shadow High IRL and they look better than most of the other dolls. It's the faces that turn me off too. If you have a near by Walmart check the clearance aisle for dolls.
This is kind of my thought process on the Shadow High/Rainbow High lines. I like the ideas, and many of the character designs are cool... but I can't get past the features. I don't collect the OMG ones either, and although I didn't initially like the style, they really grew on me and I wouldn't mind getting one at some point. A lot of people point out that the OMG dolls are also stylized with super big eyes, but the major difference that makes the OMG dolls better in my eyes is... yeah, the eyes not being inset. Inset eyes look amazing (I mean we are on a BJD forum), but only when they're done well, and the SH/RH ones are too uncanny to me. I think the only one I'd consider buying is the Year of the Tiger one, but I'm not willing to spend that much on a playline doll, so I'm not bothering.
Well I picked up all the SH dolls (except the boy as I haven't collected any of the boys). Target also had all of series 4 dolls in and I got all of those too
I saw all the ones I wanted in store today, but I didn't buy them. I had all the RH and OMG dolls up until around Christmastime, at that point I decided I wasn't going to collect them anymore. I did prefer the OMG to the RH dolls, I love the big dark eyes and the solid body that reminds me of classic Barbie. I love the gray scale and solid black tones on the SH dolls, but in person as pretty as they are, I felt I could do without them. I am calling it a win...for now lol
Yes, for some reason, the eyes on these dolls are really not appealing to me. I did love MGA's Novi Stars, because I found their eyes incredibly beautiful (plus they were aliens). However, the RH/SH eyes look flat and lifeless to me, which beats the point of having inset eyes (IMHO). I loved the original Rainbow Surprise dolls, which had painted on eyes. They looked beautiful to me (still regret not getting at least one, but I prefer smaller dolls), and their features didn't look as bland to me, thanks to the eyes being so well done. Then again, I am a weirdo who tends to love things most people find scary/creepy/plain-old-ugly. I don't know why I want to force myself to like RH and SH now. I'm well off not trying to hoard one more fashion doll line. It's nice to hear one more soul who finds their eyes not appealing, however, I hear it's one of the major selling points on top of their clothes. I just don't see it. (:
Omg yeah, the Novi Stars are so cool. The slightly uncanny vibe of the eyes works for them because they're aliens, and everything is pushed so far on them (in a good way) that the eyes in particular don't really stand out as weird compared to the rest of the doll as they do (imo) for Rainbow High. And I'm so glad I'm not the only one trying to force themselves to like RH/SH. Like I keep looking at pictures saying "maybe this time I'll like it" but nope... not sure why I'm trying to get myself to spend money, but oh well. I'm just happy that Monster High is returning, as that can distract me from the current RH/SH fad.
I finally found the last 2 Pacific Coast girls I needed. Now I just need to work on doll room rearranging to get everyone out and displayed. I never got into the OMG dolls (thankfully).
Looking at everything there's always been something off about a lot of the dolls by MGA in my eyes. As for inset eyes I don't mind the Liv dolls and ended up with quite a few of them. Big eyes and Betty Boop sized heads are generally a nope for me but then again I sculpt and work hard to get proportional heads for my dolls. I did see someone had put Rainbow High clothes on a Barbie so they might fit other 1/6 scale dolls. I wish they sold fashion packs instead of having to get a whole other doll.
