Seymour < Cat Companion for SD Doll >

Aug 14, 2013

    1. All this talk about kitties yesterday, and it would have been my cat's 18th birthday... It felt really sad that my beloved friend since childhood is no longer with me. She would've enjoyed playing with all the ball joints. But as midnight struck on the clock an idea struck my head - to make a feline companion for my doll in memory of J.S.! I'm going to start on her right away, so I'll post some concept pictures soon :-)

    2. My condolences.

I don't care what they say, but I am planning to get reunited with all of ma pets when I kick the bucket.

Anyway, I am super excited with your new project as a cat sculptor.

    3. Thanks Switchum. It's only been a couple of months... I think a dedicated art project is what the doctor ordered to start getting it out of my system.

And as per your suggestion, when enough time has passed and life circumstance once again permits, I would totally love to adopt someone. I think it's important to have little creatures in our human lives, if only to keep us grounded ;) I personally am an ecstatic slave to the feline species :love.

That's a very good plan, and the one I'm totally sticking to as well.

This is going to be a personal project, but I don't want this to be a morbid thread, quite the opposite I want it to be a celebration of cats' prowess, mischief and elegance. I want to create something reasonably realistic (well as far as my limited sculpting skills will allow it :o, the rest I'll eloquently call "my personal and conceptual style" :arrr). So, I'll be relying heavily on your expertise and advice. I'm proud to be joining the ranks of "cat sculptors".

Oh, and by the way can one see your "cat work" (or otherwise) outside the forum?

    4. Oh my goodness Nia, reading this made me sad for all my furry friends of the past. But in a really good way. It is good to remember. I am really excited to see what you do, I LOVE kitties!

And Switchum, I absolutely agree! I am planning on the very same thing:)

    5. A passing of a pet is always hard. Often harder than losing a friend or relatives to me. I think making an art work dedicated to your late cat is a noble idea and I am sure that it will be a good healing process and your kitty will appreciate it. Yep, He will know.

I am a huge cat lover as you might have noticed. I spend good chunk of time looking at cat pictures on-line every morning.

There is a few nice cat BJDs out there. One comes to my mind is this one. It is nice one to use as a reference but I would stick to your personal and conceptual style. I prefer fluffy looking kitties, anyway.

I will be happy to give any advice to you, but I am pretty much a novice when it comes to joint engineering....

I will PM you for my cat works.

    6. Good, I'll be looking forward to seeing your stuff :-) As for the link, thanks, but I don't want to be actively looking for "cat BJDs". I had the idea kind of fully formed in my mind. If it coincides with something, oh well... so be it, if not even better.

I just don't want to have any preconceived ideas about this one. I'm going to base it on my own cat, who was a Russian Blue, medium fluff involved :) ...

I think I got the hang of this whole jointing "thing" while working on my Malachite girl. Anatomy is another story... and it's a horror story to boot! So, yeh, stand by for questioning :arrr

Aah, well. You can never grow tired of looking at cat pictures. Here's one for you.... (I hope forum rules permit random internet cat snippets??, if that's not the case I apologise in advance)

    7. Here's a very rough concept... Looking back at it, the drawing actually came out a bit more robust, might have to slim it down a bit. It actually doesn't matter that much, because I rarely stick with a sketch, it's just for general reference.

Just waiting for a new batch of clay to arrive, so I can start sculpting already (itchy hands). Like I said I want something quite realistic, so I'm going to do joints in all the appropriate places, just like on a human doll. Depending on articulation I'm gonna get I might have to add more joints in certain areas, that are not currently in this picture (this is only a preliminary sketch), but I want to try and avoid making him too segmented if possible. I guess it's going to be the same battle as I had with "Malachite": aesthetics vs natural movement capabilities. Will see what gives...

P.S. But I really want to try make movable ears, I think they are so expressive. Might actually try magnets, if I find some small enough...

    9. i would actually think having a bjd of your pet would be rather cool . my cat from child hood would have been about 18 or 19 some time earlier this month . its like a piece of u dies when they do .we got got her when i was 5 :(

the thought of movable ears is awesome idea to it would give it more expression
i cant wait to see when you start !!
