These pants have been worn by men for hundreds of years. Then came into fashion for women in the 70's (yes, I made a few and wore them myself ) and now I am seeing them again in clothing stores this summer. In Thailand they are made of linen for work and silk for leisure. They are Thai Fisherman pants, now called "wrap pants" They are very simple - a good beginner's project. It is two pieces (front and back) and four tie straps. You only sew together the crotch and attach straps and hem everything else. If anyone is confused or has questions feel free to PM me. This is a modification from a 70's pattern. ---Mod note--- Broken photos were removed
I have one question. For the half waist measurement, is that half of the circumfrance of the waist (C/2), or is that like measuring from hip to belly button?
Those are also nicknamed LARPer pants, because they are very very common at the Live Action Role Play groups I've seen ^^ They're quite comfy. (And as a female, the main reason to tie the front half first, then bring up the back? So you only have to untie the back to use the bathroom)
Thanks for this pattern I would love to make a pair of those. You said you've worn some, are they complicated to put on yourself let alone a doll?
Well, I guess they take some practice. the best way is to lay it out on a chair or bed, then straddle yourself over the middle of it so you reach both the front and back. Once you get the hang of it, it gets easier
These are too cool! I can make them up for each of my boys. I wonder if it would look goofy in plaid?
I sorta marked the crotch on the pattern, but you probably want to measure your dolls waist to crotch, and add about an inch. they are suppose to be loose. The crotch is the "U" shaped cut on the pattern.
I just threw a pair together for Vasilisa. the rise is a little low and I monkeyed around with the ties (because I failed twice to create a cloth tie that didn't have an ugly side, then gave up) and am not totally satisfied with how it turned out, but they're pretty cute. thanks for posting this pattern! front and back http://i23.tinypic.com/9iqsg4 http://i24.tinypic.com/mucp3r.gif the sides http://i24.tinypic.com/znr52r.jpg http://i22.tinypic.com/e8ltgj.gif http://i20.tinypic.com/15d5g5d.jpg
Hey, those are pretty cute! You know they are on backwards? ...doesn't really matter, just thought i would mention it... I think the tiny rope is a great idea instead of trying to make a sewn string, and wrapping it around like that is real cute! Good job!
I thought I'd read that they could be tied either way...this way presents a unified front, which I like, although as someone else pointed out, the other way would be more convenient for a human, since we have to go to the bathroom from time to time. but thanks for pointing that out. ^_^
I decided to make these for Alchemy to have waiting for him when he arrived - it made sense because they are loose and forgiving, and would allow me time to make more fitted pants when he was here. (I just couldn't bear the thought of the poor little guy sitting around pantless - although being male it might not have bothered him that much). They worked out beautifully, and aren't a problem at all when he sits. I think what makes a huge difference in the final appearance is the hand, or drape, of the fabric. The ties are strips of the fabric with burned edges - looks quite cool.
Sweet Creations, these pants, in the right fabric, can be worn on Formal Night on cruise liners. ^-^ They are stunningly versatile. These would make some amazing harem pants.... Hm. There's a lot of room for altering them to customize, too. I've also used this pattern to make myself a few pairs of these, and they're easy and fun to both wear and make. I bet it would look fabulous with a band of elastic in the bottom of the legs, keeping it tight around the ankle while the rest of the fabric poofed out.... *scuttles off to draw up prototypes*
Wait, so you have two halves of a pair of pants, and you tie one on one way, and the other is tied on the other way? *doesn't quite get it*
The seam actually goes right along the crotch, so if you imagine a normal pair of pants, just think of the side seams being open. If you took a normal pair of jeans and cut them up the sides, you would have the basic pattern of these pants, but on a smaller scale. Since there's so much fabric to them, you don't see the slit in the side, because they wrap around most of your leg, as is shown by the pictures above. There are ties coming out of the sides at the top of the pants, and they wrap around the waist and meet each other in the back and front.
I found this site for you that maybe is a little easier to understand: http://www.purpleunicorn.com/wraps.html Blue Ghost: I noticed that some tie the ankles together. I did see a version with elastic hems on a site while researching these... however, at the time, there were only a handful of sites about these. NOW if you Google "Wrap Pants" there are 326,000 hits!
I got mine done. Yay! I ended up doing the ties and waistband by quartering the band and topstitching it. Trying to turn the ties right side out just wasn't going to happen this small! front back
Wezlart, those are beautiful! The pattern on you fabric is in just the right scale. Is it silk? Susan
Thank you! Thank you! I checked the tag on what was left of the original piece. It says 100% Rayon... I guess that's a good thing? It ironed well, which helped a lot! It was a skirt/blouse/jacket suit that was too big, and really out of fashion, but I loved the color and the pattern. After carrying it around a few years, I made this: (the skirt became pants) with enough left over for these pants. I'm still trying to decide what top I should do with the last of the fabric? I was afraid at first that the pattern was too large, I'm glad it turned out well!
Your outfit looks beautiful. What a great re-use of an out of date ensemble What about a Nepali Blouse for the leftovers? I think it would look good with the Thai pants. http://www.folkwear.com/asian.html Pattern #111
Thank you! The blouse is exactly what I was thinking of, too! I had no idea what it would be called, but I love it! I'll post when I get it done... Thanks!
I was thinking about using this pattern to make a pair of pants for a photoshoot. I was wondering if anyone had pictures of a doll in these pants in a sitting and/or kneeling position (the doll that would be wearing these pants will be in quite a few complex positions). I know Tumble said they didn't have a problem sitting, but a picture of this would be a great help.
No sitting pictures, just standing ones When he's sitting, it's easy to arrange these pants to fall without gapping. They overlap a lot, so there's little no to leg showing. Susan
I just found this thread too, and I'm hoping these pants will make a great 'welcome home' set for my boy. I might even cheat 100% and make them out of fleece so I don't have to hem, lol. (And then they could be pajama pants...right?
I want to add to this, that what you have to do if you want to have one color on the inside, and another on the outside, is pretty easy! First, split the crotch right down the middle add a half inch seam allowance where you just cut. Then, you cut out two of one color, and two of the other color. Third, you take one of each color, and stitch them together on the new seam line you'd created by cutting your pattern. This seam would end up between your legs. Then, you stitch your two halves together just like in this tut. Have both sides of Color A on one side, and both halves of color B on the other. Unless you want a court jester kind of look, in which case alternating them would be appropriate. That would require strategic planning to get right. And you finish it off with your ties just like before! It sounds more complicated, but all you're doing is adding another seam down in the between-the-leg section. When you're all done, it looks like this: I chose my fabric poorly. But that's the idea. If anyone wants to see what the inside looks like, let me know and I'll take some more photos. But this is a lightweight cotton and a rather thick, ravelly twillish kind of fabric. If it was similar fabrics, just different colors, it'd look better. Here's a better result, using all the same fabric. For the ties, I just lapped the fabric over once and ran some string through it, using my hemostats to pull it through.
Two colored pants is a good idea! Looking at your pants made me think of making these reversible. Using a thin, drapey fabric should help them hang well. As a bonus, the inside color would show at the side openings.
Totally making a pair of these for my BBB Pi, so he'll have pants that will go "over" his talon feet.
I used this tutorial long ago to make wrap pants for a full l doll.... Now I am sad to see all the picture links to the actual tutorial are broken
Oh no, it is gone! I could probably figure them out again from the slightly shabby pair I made, but I wonder if anyone happened to save these before they got swallowed up in this photobucket nonsense....
The original starter of this thread has not been on DoA in some time, so the photos will unfortunately not be able to be recovered unless they come back.
I've suspected from all the tutorial threads I have watched that the original poster probably won't be around to fix things but I didn't see any reason to rule out someone else having saved the pattern one way or another to keep it alive.
@HeavensChaos Oh, I didn't mean to assume that no one else had saved them, I just meant the original photos themselves!
I don't have all the math for these, but I've made them in the past and have my own patterns/templates drawn up. If just seeing them would help people figure this out, I'd be happy to dig them out and scan one.
Heh, not a problem! For a second I'd wondered if I'd asked for something not allowed! I'd think if you left some idea of the size, like the doll your made them for, I don't think it could hurt!
Gorgeous pants! If the bjd pattern is not available, there are plenty of visuals and patterns online. Just search for "Thai Fisherman Pants". You'll find different versions. I love 'em!
