Wearables Sewing Project: Working with Scraps [ Round 142 ]

Jan 1, 2025

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

A brand new year with so many fashion possibilities to explore! Let’s begin by celebrating some of those leftovers from the past, and turning some of those scraps into worthwhile garments for our dolls. We all have them, whether recycled from old garments or leftover from new fabric that we didn’t quite use up. Now’s your chance to create something fun for our dolls by clearing out that scrap pile…good for the dolls and good for the planet!;)

      Week 1: 1/1-1/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 1/8 to 1/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 1/16 to the end of January
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

    4. I WANT to join in but know I won't have time. I'm booked solid (way overcommitted) unitl the end of May

Cheerig from sidelines again for me.

    5. I may not have a lot of time, but I'm sure I can come up with something to make. It just won't be anything super ambitious.

    6. My favorite theme is back again!! I want to take a look at the inventory since it's been a full month and a half since I even LOOKED at my sewing stuff, lol, I'll need to see what sparks inspiration before I can get cookin'.

    7. Happy New Year! I'm in for this round! Not sure what I'm doing yet, but I'll figure something out.

    8. I made up a design to use up some of my scraps. It's intended for Leto my LS Jiao Mu Jiao since he's cute and can pull off a patchwork little outfit. I have never done patch-worked fabric so this will be a new experience. I just hope joining the sewing project this month will help my motivation and actually force me to complete something. I did diddly last month so Era still doesn't have a face-up. yaaay...
Alright, now the design; I doodled it after looking at ouji fashion for another project, because Leto fits cute outfits like that perfectly.

    9. I’m back this month and joining with my Unoa Lusis. I’m actually making this dress in anticipation of my Unoa Sist’s arrival - they have the same body just a different skin tone.

I have the paper pattern all cut out, some beautiful lace found, and I am deciding between a couple of fabrics and will finalize the choice tomorrow.
My pattern is from Dollmore, the Chavret Dress. dollmore [MSD Size Pattern - DD01 Dollmore's Creafts Making the Chavret Dress]
I have a Dollmore ballet kid Sona, but I harvested her body to make one of my UNOA hybrids so I can check back-and-forth about the fit and also try it on my slightly more stout (And adorable) DikaDoll LingRi who still has her own head (for now…).

    10. I have been making lots of YOSD dresses lately and I’ve ended up with bits and pieces of fat quarters that are all kind of in the same family but aren’t enough for a whole dress by themselves… so my plan is to do a play on Requiem Art Designs’ Looking Glass Lolita pattern in 27cm Tiny and try to wipe out some of my scrappy ends.

      • x 5
    11. I decided on plain black broadcloth for my fabric, but I might try running a line of machine embroidery down the yoke front instead of using trim there, and omit the bow under the cameo. I’m still sorting my trim. This is fun!

Side note, I have smaller beads to sew on her pink dress too. They just seem large and it has bugged me for a while, it’s time to change them.

    12. I bought a gathering foot for my sewing machine because I've been sewing So Many Flipping Gathers and I'm excited to play with it for this project :D

    13. I've been waiting for this round!

Hopefully I'll have a number of things to make up here; I did a bit of sewing the last couple days before the new year, but there's always more fabric to go. I keep forgetting where I've said it so I'll say it again: my goal this year is to sew and knit enough that I can actually close the ottoman I store... let's say a good chunk of my fabric and yarn stash in. There's more scattered around, but I want to use enough that I can start circulating more of the scattered stuff back into the ottoman and thus more easily into view.

I'm kicking the year off with a fat quarter I thrifted a while back and have been sitting on, plus some last bits of a white fabric I'm planning to use for lining. I think it'll make the cutest dress for Megu! I'm going to use the smaller eyelet trims as a collar and a trim on the sleeve cuffs, and put the wider eyelet trim in the skirt.

      Here's said fabrics:

      (Alternate link here)

The actual pattern itself I'm pulling from The Dolls Dressmaker, since the 14-15in patterns seem to fit Megu. (I think it was Teddy who mentioned sometime that Sasha patterns fit DearSDs?) I'm gonna use the back-close bodice and a puff sleeve, then just a gathered rectangle skirt since that uses up a good amount of fabric. I'll try to fussy cut a fox for the bodice, I think it'll be cute.

@SputnikCentury Oooh good luck with the gathering foot! That sounds quite useful.

      • x 7
    14. This is exciting to see so many comments on this thread already! I'm really excited to see everyone's projects coming together!

@SputnikCentury - oooh, a gathering foot! I want one of those. Let us know how it works for you!

I'm not having any ideas hit me just yet for using scraps.....I do want to join so I'll have to think of something!

    15. I got the gathering foot and played with it a bit today, and in the process of doing that, I realized that even though the one I bought is compatible with my machine, I could have gotten a snap-on one, which I can already tell will be SO much easier to use... so I ordered one of those lmao. (Switching the feet otherwise involves a screwdriver, and no one has time for that.) I'm peeved at the Janome website now, because I bought the exact part they told me to buy and they never mentioned in their documentation that my machine has a snap-on adapter pre-installed.

    16. Here's Pearl, my Doll Leaves Laura. She has barely any clothes, and is small enough to wear clothes made from my scrap I think I'm going to make her a long sleeved dress.

    17. I already started sewing, so I may as well join this round :XD:.
I'm making a winter outfit for Amadis (Thel by Bardo Research), it will include:
      - leggings and turtleneck shirt made of knitted violet cotton (recycling a knee-high sock :sweat);
      - sleeveless dress of light brown linen (looks like the fabric has once been well-worn summer trousers);
      - winter jacket of multicolor, mostly orange-violet cotton (scraps left over from making a human-sized warm jacket, the fabric was originally a sarong brought from a vacation in Thailand).
Scraps all around! The only big piece of fabric is the white "fur" lining for the jacket.
I'm currently free-styling the shirt. Photos as soon as there's any daylight.
Not sure I'll be able to finish this month, but the jacket design has been in my head since September, it's high time to at least start on it.

    18. I swear I will actually sew this time.

There's a shop I love on Etsy for lightweight doll fabrics, and they have an even greater love of sending out sample swatches with orders. I therefor have a massive selection of samples, even with most of them disappearing off into the ether.

Meet: Dikadoll Amanda Sweet on a YoSD body
      [IMG]
I bonded with her while using her as a mannequin for this past PJ swap, so we're going to try to make her a cute patchwork outfit of some sort with the samples, since her style is somewhat reminiscent of myself at three years old while playing dress up. I'm thinking maybe an overall dress with tights and a t-shirt? I've ordered some snaps, but I'm not sure what patterns I'll be able to track down or if I'll have to try to make my own with no idea what I'm doing.

A sampling of the swatches I have available, as well as the bright pink ribbon I'd love to incorporate somehow.

    19. I had elbow surgery on Monday so it will not be for this round again. ^^' I need to rest for almost 15 days and don't make anything with my arm. -_-' So I will cheer you from the side again.

    20. I hope the recovery goes well.

      I'm not particiapating either.
We've clearing our living room and hallway furniture into the sewing room for new flooring to be installed. Between that and the repainting (hasn't been done since my husband bought the house in 1990) the sewing room will be out of action for some time.

    21. Well, I’ve finally recovered enough from a particularly nasty bout of winter virus that derailed my holidays (and yes, as a responsible senior person I did get my yearly flu shot…for all the good that did.):doh I’m still dealing with an aftermath of bronchitis, but I’m determined to work my way through that and get something productive done this month regardless.:thumbup I have a bunch of scraps left over from my recent sewing adventures making an entire wardrobe for one of my dolls. These fabrics are gorgeous (from an Anne of Green Gables collection) and I want to make good use of what’s left.

This is actually for a wonderful doll who is currently on preorder, so my trusty Peakswoods Briana, Second-hand Rose, will act as my stand-in model. I will be making a couple of basic blouses in this same style, but simplified without the pintucks.

    22. They are indeed gorgeous.

      Sorry you've not been well

      Teddy

    23. Houston, we have liftoff!

I bought a cute overall dress doll pattern today off of Etsy, and downloaded a free t-shirt pattern from Ithilear, and printed them when I got off work (with bonus underwear in case I forgo tights). Settled in with my fabric samples this evening and managed to get the shirt and dress out of three samples each, with one each for two pairs of underwear since I couldn't decide which color was cuter.

I've got everything but the straps for the dress cut so far (those will be the same fabric as the pockets), because I don't have the snaps in yet. The original pattern calls for buttons, and I have some of those adorable miniature rivet snaps coming in, which will require a specific length and width yet to be seen.

I was gonna do the t-shirt and underwear first, so she could sit there in them and watch me sew the dress... but then I accidentally grabbed the dress thread first. I'll finish sewing this thread length, and then grab the other thread I need. But I have cut out patterns and am actually doing sewing, so I'm as far along as I've ever gotten in a month, and on schedule even!

    24. Well done!

      Teddy

    25. @dm_sof , congratulations! I like the neat use of fabric and the nice, if understated, color combination.

I've also been unexpectedly productive: I'm done, if not entirely satisfied, with the leggings and shirt of the underlayer and am half-way through the dress. The weather has been dreadful, but I hope to show some pics soon.

      • x 1
    26. I finished the pants and I'm pretty satisfied with how they came out; though I wish I had made them more poofy (error in my pattern making). The waist band isn't as fitted as I would like, but that's what happens when you use elastic. I suppose next time I'll have to use snaps. The shirt will be next.

    28. @Alamentine I love those pants!<3 The patchwork makes them so unique and full of fun personality. And the ribbon lacing up the side is a wonderfully creative touch.:)

    29. @Alamentine , those are some fancy pants! Well done :thumbup Love the use of ribbons.

      Amadis and the fabrics:

The white background is a large piece of synthetic "fur" that will make lining for the jacket.

      Progress so far:
[IMG]Winter orange-violet - underlayer and dress by helgie, on Flickr
I'm going for a budled-up look, something suitable for half a day outdoors at -10 C. So the shirt and leggings are thick. But I don't like how the shoulders of the shirt came out, looks like there's excessive fabric there. I may just cut out the top parts of those seams and redo them.
The leggings have elastic strips at the bottom to keep them in place and make putting shoes on easier.
The sash is just a piece of fabric right now, but I plan to make it into a kind of corselet.
The sides of the dress are held with pins, it actually currently looks like this:
I lined it with a net, it helps reduce bulk and shape the garment.
      All sewn by hand.
I also made Amadis a new wig over the holidays.

      • x 18
    30. I LOVE the look of this, it;s so cute and cozy looking (the shoulders look fine to me as well).

It looks sweet with the dress over it too, but I really like how the seggigns and shirt look on their own.

      Teddy

    31. @helgie Ahhhh…the ever well dressed Amadis, always ready for whatever life has in store (even -10C weather!) She obviously has her talented dressmaker on retainer.;) This is shaping up to be another wonderful outfit for this very lucky doll. The shirt and leggings are such a wonderful color and I love the layered look when the dress is added too. I’m anxious to see more.:)

    32. I got accepted to my first two-day convention so I'll be going to ground for the next few months while I build back up stock lol, godspeed on this round everybody! Scrap rounds are my favorite so I'm sad to miss it, but hopefully that'll help me gain steam for coming back motivated!

      • x 3
    33. I was gonna do some crazy colors, but I really wanted to use the patterned denim and that was the only fabric sample that worked with it weight-wise and was big enough for the dress pieces. :whee:

We've got a shirt and one pair of underwear finished! I'm almost done with the body of the dress, but won't be able to finish it until my hardware notions arrive. Crossing my fingers they'll get here before the month is out, because it would be genuinely wonderful to actually finish within the month for once :XD:

If they take long enough, I might try for a second shirt and dress... I still have to figure out what sock fabric I'm going to use, though.

      • x 13
    34. Good luck building up enough stock. I hope the convention goes well.

So cute! Looking forward to seeign the dress too.

    35. @Mamo We’ll miss your creative input this month, but good luck with your efforts for the upcoming convention.:thumbup We’ll be here for you when you’re ready to come back and look forward to your return.

@dm_sof How cute!:) Those colors look so adorable on her. I’m really looking forward to seeing what else you manage to get made this month. Having to wait on sewing supplies is a drag on creativity, but you do have a good backup plan just in case.

      • x 1
    36. @helgie Ahh, I love Amadis! And I admit I'm a sucker for purple, I love her new clothes and new wig!

@Alamentine Those pants are beautiful, the ribbon lacing is a really great detail.

@PoeticSoul Oh wow, what pretty florals! Simplifying the blouse so it doesn't have the pintucks sounds like a good idea with those fabrics; they really shine on their own.

@dm_sof Hehe, that's such a cute shirt. And underwear is always a good plan, plus in my experience it's a nice, quick sewing project.

    37. Half the hardware has arrived! I was thinking silver, but I like how the darker metals look with it... Or I could give it a pop of color. Thoughts?
      [IMG] [IMG]

(I also got a sock pattern to try, but I haven't picked which fabric to use for them yet.)

      • x 10
    38. One of the darker colours or the pink (much as I hate suggesting pink) would look best with those fabrics, in my opinion.

      Teddy

    39. @helgie That's a beautiful outfit!
@dm_sof What fun combination of fabrics! Your girl looks so pleased with her new shirt.
I think one on the metal ones looks best, but you could probably make the colored ones work as well, especially if you echoed the color in a second place somewhere on the dress to tie it together. You could even go all out and use two different colors, in the spirit of the patchwork design.

      • x 1
    40. I went on a trip and brought Dollmore Elf Elly Girl Lime, I think I might name her Poppy. She only recently arrived and I finished her face up (my first one!) right before I left.
She fit in a glasses case and I brought a bag of scraps figuring I could work on my abysmal hand sewing skills.
I only got these underthings done though.
Now I'm back home, I'm hoping before the month is done I'll be able to use some of those scraps to make her some actual clothes.
I did actually start on a tutu like skirt. And I have a scrap of fabric I want to use for a t-shirt.

    41. But they came out nice and are a good fou ndation layer for an outfit.

      Teddy

      • x 2
    42. @Vivianne Excellent work on her underthings…it’s a wonderful base to work from.:) Sewing for such a tiny doll is difficult I know, and sewing for them by hand is the best way to go in my opinion because it gives you more control.

      • x 1
    43. @Teddy Thank you!

@PoeticSoul Thank you! Yes, I've been thinking hand sewing may be the best option for her, bonus my hand sewing skills will improve as I do so! I need to look up tips for hand sewing stretchy fabric though.

      • x 2
    44. @dm_sof Oooh that's looking so cute! I personally feel like the metals fit the color scheme of the dress itself well, but if they're going to be part of a full outfit, a pop of color to go with the other elements would be adorable.

@Vivianne Those look great! And yeah I feel you on hand sewing for such a tiny doll; at least the projects work up fast, heh. With sewing stretchy fabrics, what kind of stitch are you using? I tend to follow this tutorial when I hand sew stretch fabric, it's worked so far.

I've managed to get one dress done, proceeded to distract myself with different ideas, and finally cut into the leftover chunk of silk I've been sitting on for like, five, coming on six years now. Still need to cut out the rest of the dress that silk will become, but we'll get there.

With the dress I did get done, I think the cuffs turned out too long so the sleeves look like an odd, short leg-of-mutton sleeve, but it did the job and used up fabric.

    45. It's pretty (so sweet with the fox print centred on the bodice like that), and you could always alter the cuffs at a later date if they bother you.

      Teddy

      • x 1
    46. That looks adorable. It will be a good base for future garments. It's not easy sewing for super tiny dolls, but I think you did a good job.

While I see what you mean, I think the sleeves are kind of cool. It's a fun kind of quirky detail that goes well with the print. If you had told me it was a design choice I would have believed you.

    47. @JaxxCapta How adorable! Your girl look so sweet in this. I adore that fabric and the style is perfect for showcasing it.:)

    48. Today I finally had a bit of time to spend and the energy to spend it crafting at the same time.
I dug around on my (admittedly rather messy) sewing machine table and I found this old project. The fabric is an ancient scrap that has been in my stash for ever. It's a remnant of something my mother made me when I was a kid, I believe it was a pair of shorts.
I realized the machine even had the right thread and needle, so I only took the time to snap a picture and then I started sewing without thinking too much about it. I already stalled once, after all.

It only took me few hours and I've already finished it. It's drying after I washed out the starch, as I write this, so pictures later.

It's a dress for Petronella, my Withdoll Emma.
It was cut using the same pattern as the dress she wears in the picture below.
I made this pattern right after I got her home and it's an easy dress to put together, so after making the pumpkin patterned dress I thought I should make her one for each season, all in the same basic style, but using different prints. This one was supposed to be the spring dress.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this. :sweat
When I'm on that "finished project high" I think; well, this was easy, I could do it again and again, no problem, let's make several!
And I start it, get out the fabrics and notions, make a big mess and maybe cut some pieces out. And then I completely loose momentum, because I've done it before and the project holds no mysteries, there is no challenge to it and it goes from a fun craft project to nothing but a dull chore.
And that's one more unfinished project, cluttering up the space and getting in the way. I'd like to say I've gotten better at avoiding it over the years, but that's not strictly true.

    49. I do a variation on it - I make a dress fr one of the girls in my Victorian family (or even see fabric that would work for a dress for one of them) and then decide that each of them needs a dress like that in their signature colour... Well, I still haven't completely finished Project Victorian Gingham, nor Project Victorian Bathing Costume, and while I have the fabrics for Project Vitroian wrapper I havent even started making them.

      And I certainly do that!

She'll look as lovely in her spring dress as she does in the Autumn one.

    50. Thank you for the link. I had been using a spaced backstitch because I already knew how to do a backstitch lol.
The stitch in that tutorial is great, hopefully Poppy's first outfit will be done soon! :)

    51. They are both awesome projects, though. I hope to one day see them finished, because it will be amazing!

After a bit of a delay, I have taken pictures of Petronella's new dress.
Looking at is now it reads more 'summer' then 'spring' but whatever. It does look like something she'd wear.
The high contrast print made it difficult to mark things with precision, so there are a bit of minor weirdness here and there, but the upside of such a busy fabric is that it distracts from any sewing sins. :)

      • x 13
    52. @Lillith Petronella looks truly lovely in her new dress! It reads as very “spring” to me, but that could be because of the area where I live (pretty flowers popping up everywhere in that season.) Regardless, it’s a wonderful style on her and beautiful fabric. Excellent work!:)

    53. Thank you!
I think it's the scale that does it for me. Most spring flowers around here are tiny, especially the early ones. On Petronella the flowers are large enough to read more like later flowers or perhaps tropical flowers. I'm not complaining, it's still a fun fabric. :)

    54. Lovely - it does look very summery - I think you might need something with tinier flowers (and maybe a more "pastel" overall effect....?) - perhaps this could be her Summer dress and you could make the next one the Spring one, if appropriate fabric comes your way..?

    55. Thanks! I've been thinking along the same lines. But I think that perhaps I should give up on the 'one dress per season' idea altogether.
Doesn't mean I can't still make season themes dresses, should I feel like it, but the fact that this dress was left unfinished for so long suggests that I was more in love with the idea, than I am with the project itself.

    57. My final hardware arrived! So I'll be doing some very specific sewing this weekend to try to finish up the dress and make some socks.

    58. I completed the two blouses I had planned for this month.:) Unfortunately I was very ill when I worked on them and made the button holes too large, which may or may not get addressed at some future date. Next month I’m hoping to make a pair of overalls to match.
