Oh, he is. I love this doll! The main reason I haven't done more with him yet is that he is so heavy and a bit akward to handle because of his body shape. It takes a bit of dedication to work with him. And I still don't have good go-to solution for photographing him, so the images you guys get to see are all improvised and usually badly lit. Sorry about that. I can't fully do him justice yet. He is even more awesome in person, I promise. This is how far I've got on the emproidery: The border begins at the center back of the hem. When I joined this round I was about half way up his left side, about where his hand rests. Once I get all the way center back I still have one more pass to do. I will put in a brown fill in, just a line of emproidery betwwen the light lines. like I've done on the sleeves. So, no chance of actually finishing before the end of the month, but I've made good progress, never the less. I'm glad I switched project.
Nicely done Lilith! I'm glad you're willing to persevere. So maybe he'll be back to visit for an unfinished business episode. ;}
That is entirely possible. I knew this guy would be a long term project and to be honest I kind of like that, but he is challenging. And some of the challenges are not at all the things I expected.
It's looking extremely good, even at this stage so I can see why you'd be glad to have switched projects and made progress on this one. Teddy
@Lillith What a cool doll! Love those big claw hands What size is he? Also great work on the embroidery! That looks like it requires patience and dedication to pull off
Thanks! He stands about 60 cm tall, but he has a hunched posture, so he is a lot bigger and heavier than most 60cm dolls. For reference, my hand fits easily through the coat sleeve. There is a discussion thread for the doll here.
@Lillith He's looking so good!! A robe fit for a king! It must be so gratifying to see the progress get further and further along!
Thank you! Even if progress is slow, it is very satisfying to see the border crawling along. I'm working on it right now and I have almost rounded the lower right corner. After that I "only" have the rest of the hem left, about 90cm of border to go. The hem is curved, though so it takes a little bit more attention as I have to adjust the pattern ever so slightly as I go.
A bit of progress and one more day of the hOliday weekend still available for sewing. Sewing together the silk outer layer of the dress This aqua silk is a bugger for fraying. I'm lucky none of the seam allowances have frayed away completely beofre I had a chance to sew them. Unfortunately, it soaks up even the smallest amount of fray check like it's been run under a tap and it changes both the drape and colour of the fabric. Also, in order to get all the pieces out of the availabl scraps, I had to cut one of the shoulder ruffles along the opposite grain than the other and it really shows in the shape of the finished ruffles. One of them is far puffier than the other. Oh well, I'm not about to unpick fabic that frays so much, and the only way to cut another shouder ruffle to make a matched pair would be to sacrifice the hem ruffle (not yet sewn) which I don't want to do, so mismatched ruffles it will have to be. Hopefully I can get neck binding, and hem ruffle machined tomorrow morning and do the hand sewing (cuffs, and fastenings etc) during my commute and lunchbreak on Tuesday when I have to work on campus. That should leave the lion's share of tomorrow for working on some full sized garment sewing. Teddy
@Teddy. That's going to be and absolutely gorgeous dress. Shame about the shoulder ruffles, but it's still looks lovely!
@Teddy would a bit of ruffled lace along the ruffle seam distract from the actual shoulder ruffle shapes? Embellishment is often my unintended reply to such bothers. ;} It certainly is a lovely fabric since I'm not the one sewing it!
@Lillith Your embroidery is always a delight! It’s a real treat to see all the progress you’re making. Your enjoyment of the process really shows. @Teddy That fabric is just gorgeous and it’s certainly worth whatever you had to do to get enough pieces to work with. I have a feeling that when it’s all finished, the difference in grain will scarcely be noticeable anyway. It’s going to be lovely…I have no doubt!
I agree. This is one of those things that are super obvious to the maker, most can see if it's pointed out, and no casual observer ever notices.
Yay! I did it just in time!! Barbie inspired dress. Hope you guys like it I forgot to take pictures of the progression again.
@WintyGummyBear Congratulations on a job well done! That dress is so-o-o quintessentially Barbie! Perfect!!!
Thank you so much! Thank you! Can't wait to try the second round Ohh can't wait to see yours Thank you! I realized I haven't work much on pink dress at all. Barbie reference gave me a good opportunity!
So I'm a little bit late but this is where I started the mockup for the undertunic so I figure, this is where the end result should be. All of this got sewn in ~72 hours between August 30th and September 2nd and I finished it about 20 minutes before I had to be out the door to go to my first dolly meet up. As with all things you make, I can see the bits that I want to change and the tunic does need some finishing touches (the seams inside are rough) including fasteners. I am however quite chuffed with the breeches which are tight fitting but he can sit in them and I can get them on and off. Spoiler: More Breeches
The britches fit very nicely. It was good to get the chance to see your work in person at the meet too. Teddy
WintyGummyBear, it's gorgeous and really suits her. Teddy: good to see you sewing for your girls again. Love the colour.
