How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. Every now and then we need a chance to take a deep breath and evaluate exactly where we’re at with our sewing…what did we get done? What was left undone? What did we intend to make but never got around to? What fabulous fabric was left unused? What got started to then be set aside with the intrusion of life? Well, this is the month to revisit those unfinished projects or never-quite-begun ideas and finally bring them to fruition. Week 1: 11/1-11/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 11/8 to 11/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 11/16 to the end of November * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! I might as well start this off since I planned to make two outfits for my Dollzone Moment boy, Mesquite, last month (grossly underestimating the time it would take to rehab these delicate old fabrics and devise a working pattern and then sew everything entirely by hand because, yeah…delicate old sari fabrics!) I’ll be making basically the same quasi toreador/mariachi/fantasy type outfit, but in shades of magenta and purples this time.
I don’t remember seeing this outfit posted, he looks amazing in it! I love the style and the fit looks great! What great sewing skills you have! ❤️
Well hey this is perfect, an irl emergency popped up and I wasn't able to finish last round despite my early progress compared to my usual back-end-loaded work style lol. I'm halfway along my first go-round before I go back along and finish the gaps. This method works well for me without causing a lot of hand pain. So for this round what I'll need to do is: -Finish topstitching along the long continuous seam -Lace details (fake pockets) and any beadwork that strikes my fancy -Add snap closures, think about decorative buttons for the exterior Round 140 vest status by Jules B, on Flickr
I SWEAR THIS TIME TRYM WILL HAVE CLOTHING Edit: Accidentally bumped the tab before hitting enter and sent just that. Here's the context: The first sewing project I started for one of these was Trym's bardic outfit, her current one in our D&D game (we move slowly, so it's still her only performance costume since her others were destroyed). Trym High-Hill is an incredibly short Halfling, shelled by a Minifee Alan head on a POPO 30cm body. Spoiler: My nakey baby has no clothes The clothing as assembled on HeroForge that I'm converting into proper attire: I have the SID doublet pattern from PamSDminiCostuming on Etsy that I'm using to reference how I'll draft the doublet pattern; I'll be cutting off the jacket tail to make it a proper sleeveless doublet. I'm altering the SID poet shirt by Beth Alvarez for the undershirt with the showing sleeves, and I'm altering my own from-scratch pattern for the pants. Haven't decided if I'm going to make the boots myself or try to buy comparable ones; same for the belt. I'll worry about the rings if I ever find her jointed hands, and the flower crown is already made! The pants will be leather, because I'm not doing this halfway. The shirt will be homespun cotton and the doublet a Sevenberry homespun you can see here: Red With White Sashiko Print by Sevenberry: Nara Japanese Homespun by Robert Kaufman SB-850327D3-3 100% Cotton - Etsy Wish me luck! I'd have tried to start last round to split this across two months since it's a big project, but last month was packed.
Hi! Nice to meet you all. When I got my dolly Mimi (Supia minisup Dorothy) a little over two years ago I was very excited. I started making her some clothes - a dress and jean jacket. Unfortunately my sewing skills, which were only ever pretty basic, were very rusty. I wasn't using patterns or tutorials or anything, and I eventually hit enough issues that my limited knowledge got overwhelmed. So the unfinished pieced went in the project pile and Mimi sat in the basic outfit I bought, waiting. Mimi has decided that she like retro/vintage styles and demanded I try again. This time I am armed with patterns and watching videos and such. So I began last month. I was originally going to start with a floral dress, but it's cold, so I'll do that when it's warm again. Current list and where I'm at: Dress coat - pattern is Autumn Chill from Designs by Jude (there's a video that was helpful for me as well) Coat is mostly done - needs buttons and more fiddling with cuffs Skirt - no pattern, done! Blouse - using the bodice from a pattern from AntiqueLilac, decided to make it open in the front for some reason. Needs finishing. Sweater vest - no pattern, haven't started Petticoat - Haven't started Tights - Haven't started (I did make her a thong though) Shoes - Started working on this. I'm using a free Smart Doll pattern (the lace boots) as a starting off point. This video is someone using it. Wig - Never made one, been watching videos. I like the wig she has now, but while the color is good, the style isn't right for her. Purse - Using a free pattern from Designs by Jude as a starting off point, but I haven't started yet Belt - haven't started Also she wants a fainting couch. Progress! Img link
Bwah! Maybe I'll actually get something done this round... Poking around Volks's shop a bit has inspired me to do doll things again. We'll see if it sticks! I've still been pretty heavily in my quilting era (did I get the "brilliant" idea to make three quilts by Christmas when I'm lucky just to get a decent 1/4 inch seam? Perhaps) but there's still an awful lot of fabric hanging around. I'm not 100% sure what I'm gonna do yet, but I suspect my model is going to be my DearSD Megu. After all, Volks got me thinking about doll things again and I just want an excuse to handle her, the DearSD size is so perfectly cuddly Depending on how much doll mojo I get back, Chandra (MDR Fang) or Thalassus (Goblin Tales Cassie) might get some love, too. Their eternal unfinished business is, erm, their entire wardrobes. I think I'm gonna start by sorting quilting cotton bits for quilt stuff versus quilting cotton for dolls, then go through my binder of patterns and see what fits the remaining doll fabric (quilting cottons or otherwise). I think I've got some DearSD-ish sized patterns that haven't seen much, if any, use. May we all knock out those projects!
Hehe, I have! I've got a few in varying states of completeness (they stay out of these rounds because they're not garment sewing). Human size quilts take out much more of the fabric hoard at once, though.
I have considered doll quilts as well. I don't quilt myself, but my bestie quilts some - her mom is way into quilting and taught me basics one time I visited.
I'll start off by posting the finished outfit from the previous round that I completed yesterday. I think I'll make some modifications later but for now I'm counting it as finished. Now I'll be continuing making hanfu for the remaining 2 dolls in my set. The next one up is Hel, my 2dDoll Snow. His hanfu will be inspired by this hanfu on Legenddoll. The last one will be for my very soon to be acquired Ao Lingshi Bei Chen; who will arrive some time this coming week. I'm planning to finish both of them this month, so hopefully I don't run into any setbacks. The fabric I'll be using for Hel is black chiffon, lavender chiffon, and black polyester
That truly turned out so beautifully! Your boy looks amazing in it, and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in this round.
I hope to join in this round as well! I have a few dollies in need of some wardrobe pieces that haven't quite fit the themes of other rounds.
I’d like to join this round and finish off these, some date back to 2011 lol If I get extra motivation I would like to sew a head bonnet or two from scratch and maybe some stockings/socks.
My goal for this month is to empty my WIP bag. First up is some shorts for Iris, my Volks F-72, who's been wearing nothing but her Volks nightie and underwear for months!
I'll hopefully have the time to join this round! If time isn't on my side, I'll just enjoy what others make
I'm a bit busy with commission work this month (for illustration, not sewing) but I'm hoping to do a redo of my previous attempt at a blouse! If I finish the blouse I'd also like to finish the JSK I never got to from the monochrome round, but I'm not betting on it considering I don't have as much time as last time. Looking forward to seeing everyone's projects as always!
I'm in for this round! I'm starting with the blue capris I cut out for Deimos, my Dream Valley Howard II a couple months ago. I'd like to make the top/ jacket that goes with it, though I'm a bit intimidated by the pattern (darts) and the satin I want to use for it.
Last month I started working on a lolita inspired outfit for my tiniest girl (Asleep Eidolon 26cm Freya) who is for now called Lempi, but I've been really busy with work and school so progress has been really slow. The outfit will have a top vest/dress, base dress, under skirt, stockings, leg warmers and maybe a bonnet if I figure out how to make one ^^' I've never made anything so elaborate, so I sketched out my plan, which I almost never do I've finished the base dress (from white viscose that looks great in doll scale but is absolutely awful to work with), and almost finished the top vest/dress, but looking at it now I decided that the waist looks to be too low- so next step is seam ripping and re-attaching... But the top dress is almost ready! Only need to adjust the waist, attach snaps and decorative buttons ^^. I've also started on the underskirt and cut out the stocking pieces. I'll hopefully manage to finish the top dress this weekend, and the skirt and stockings next weekend.
I completed one piece each for the last two dolls, as I've decided to make their outfits in tandem. The one on the left is Hel and the one on the right is Era my Ao Lingshi Bei Chen that just arrived Wednesday (which is why he doesn't have a face-up). Since they're a couple I decided to make the style of their hanfu the same, the only difference will be the colors. Era will actually have a dark blue chiffon for the outer layer, but I didn't have enough fabric, so I made the middle layer instead. Hel's will be the black chiffon, a lavender middle layer, and a black polyester inner layer. They will both have pleated pants instead of skirts and I'm thinking of making the belts match; or at the very least make them slightly different colors but otherwise identical. Once I finish these two I'll take a group picture of all five of my dolls together in their new hanfu.
Coming in late to join. I'll try to finish up some of the projects from earlier rounds that never got done. I've got three main candidates. Beatrice's jester costume still needs a shirt and some accessories. The shirt is almost done, so this should not be a problem. Petronella's outfit from the Monochrome round still needs a skirt and perhaps, again, some accessories. The skirt is cut, but not sewn and it's a simple design, so it shouldn't be impossible. Then there is always my troll. His tunic still needs buttons at the neckline and the bottom hem is neither finished nor embellished yet. That is probably a bigger project than I can fit in the remaining weeks of this month, but perhaps I can get at least something done on it. We'll see.
Well not as extraordinary as what gets made here but this was just a fun thing I made and finally finished. Now it goes to the, “What do I do with this” pile!
Looks nice, though. I've finished Beatrice's shirt and with that the main parts of her outfit is done. I found a scrap of plum colored cotton and painted gold dots on it so simulate tiny sequins. And this is what it looks like now. She still need shoes but I don't have a plan for those yet. If anyone has any ideas, please share, because I'm a little bit stuck. I am also considering some kind of a ruff and perhaps a few props. Maybe a marotte, or a musical instrument like a tambourine or something. My boyfriend suggested a mask to cover her eternally neutral face.
This turned out so well, are you a costume designer? I’m blown away by how professional these look! They both look amazing. Well done and what a treat to watch the progression of this all come together. ❤️
@mydaffer Oh, that is so-o-ooo cute! I love it! Well done. @Lillith What a delight it is to see your pair together like this…they’re pure awesomeness! Their outfits are epic! I do agree that a contrasting ruff for her neckline would be the perfect finishing touch to her outfit.
You are too kind. I'm not a professional by any means, but I have done my share of costumes over the years. These have been very fun to make. I had no definitive plan going in, I just let them grow organically, making stuff up as I went. Thank you! We'll see what I can dig out of my fabric stash, I am really stretching it when it comes to what colors I have available, but I'm sure i can come up with something. It's such a small piece, after all, worst case I can always paint some fabric. Or, maybe even white could work for this, there are so many other colors there already.
They look so awesome!!! For the shoes - you could do slip on shoes to match the vest with green pom-poms on them to match? That would be quite cute!
I'm pretty happy with how things are going. Mimi's coat has pockets and buttons and it's great. Then my brain went crazy and decided she needed a sugar plum fairy costume, so here's an in progress pic of how that's going.
Thank you! I am a really big fan of the colors as well, browns and white work so well in clothing! Thank youu! ^^ Thank you!! I've made good progress, only need to add bows and jewellery and make up my mind on the bonnet/headpiece situation. I realized her elf ears might get in the way of the bonnet, so I'm thinking of making a cute little hat instead. Or something, I feel like her head needs something to make the outfit feel complete? Agh, choices choices
Finished another layer of their Hanfu. I'll be working on the pants and top next, that will take a bit more time since I have to craft the pattern for each of them. I picked up some sheer embroidered ribbon for their belts and have been thinking up ideas on how I want to use it, probably line it with 1/4" ribbon and layer another color behind it.
Oh, that looks so good! I always struggle to make convincing outer wear for my dolls. And that fairy costume is going to be adorable! These outfits are going to look spectacular. It's so cool to see them come together one part at a time like this. And I am a big lover of layers.
@Vivianne buttons and pockets…such lovely details, and the fabric on that coat is epic! Wonderful work. And your sugar plum fairy outfit is looking adorable already. I love the color combination! @Alamentine Oooh, those sheer robes beneath the black are positively luscious!
I finally got a chance to take a picture of the doll I recently received and wanted to complete this outfit for. I think it’s cute on her although it’s just made from scratch. She’s so kicky, it’s hard to stand her so I may work on that when I have time.
It is very cute, the two fabrics go well together, the black lace is a perfect accent, and that little skunk pin is adorable. Her overalls look great, you did a really good job.
These turned out so-o-ooo cute and they’re delightfully whimsical. I love the juxtaposition between her rather melancholic expression and the lighthearted nature of the fun balloon print. It gives her character wonderful depth!
Wow thank you so much, I really love your comment, it’s so sweet and knowing others like them is heart warming! I really love sewing from scratch as you never know what it’s going too turn out like and when I make mistakes I have to figure away around them, hence the side material added because they weren’t wide enough the first try at sewing them together. The doll I just painted her face and just received her, she’s Dollzone Pandora, she was a challenge to try and make sweet because her face mold is really, in my opinion, not that pretty.
I have finished the inner layer for both Hel and Era. After working with chiffon for so long any heavier fabric is a breeze. I'm really happy with how they turned out, I still have to make some closures for them though. Next will be the pants in the same fabric. I have some thoughts of what the pattern will be, so hopefully I can make them swiftly without much on the spot revisions. I'm really glad I decided to make all these, it's been good practice and I feel like my sewing has gotten more consistent. I have plans for more matching sets for my large dolls, but I won't be starting the next one until I finish Era's face-up, body coloring, and modded elf ears.
@alamentine Nice work they looks very well made, love both your boy, looking forward to seeing them complete with pants!
A combination of a dead home computer and a lack of notifications of updates to any threads means I missed a chunk of posts until now. It's great to see so much progress on unfinishished projects! Teddy
Well, it's not an unfinished business but I wanted to make a cool vest for my Pocket Mela. =) And now, it's an unfinished business. XD I can't sew for a long time because of my elbow. :/ I need to go slowly so I don't know when it will be finished. But I like the way it is for now.
I disappeared all month but I DID actually get the vest done!! And some quick accessories for him and his sister's matching outfits. I need to take a nice picture of him in the daylight now that it's all finished, that's going to be an adventure since his sister can't stand for very long at all and I'll need to find a safe spot for a doll chair, haha.
I feel like I'm treading water. I had the pieces for Petronella's skirt cut and ready to be sewn... But then I thought I'd add some pin tucks, and those did not turn out well, so I had to unpick those seams and press the fabric again so I'm back where I started. I did dye a bit of lace to match, so there is that. But Now I am thinking, maybe I should make it a dress instead of just a skirt, I do have enough fabric for a bodice. I don't know. Not much progress, in any case.
@Moonycat31 That fabric is wonderful, and I love how you laid it out to its best advantage in this garment. Well done to get this far. @Mamo Good for you! I understand having dolls that are difficult to stand. I have several odd ball sculpts for whom standing is a challenge, especially when trying to show a sewing accomplishment. That’s why my crew is such great loungers in normal circumstances. Can’t wait to see your creations for this month! @Lillith It’s so difficult when things don’t quite go right (I did my fair share of picking with the delicate fabrics I was working with this month too.) Hang in there, I know you can do it. And as for myself, I managed to complete my Mesquite’s latest outfit (in spite of all the cooking and cleaning for the holidays!)
