Wearables Sewing Project: Unfinished Business [ Round 113 ]

Aug 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Finally! It’s time to stop and catch our breath…and catch up on those well intentioned sewing projects that never quite made it across the finish line. I know I have some, and I’m sure some of you do too!;) This is the month to focus on completing them. Or perhaps you had a piece of fabric left over from a previously completed project that you’d love to make something new out of. Or maybe your past pattern drafting was so successful, you’d love to make another outfit using it. Whatever the reason, this is the month to think about finishing up all those uncompleted ideas.

      Week1: 8/1-8/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 8/8 to 8/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 8/16 to the end of August
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 114 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei)
      [ Round 115 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore
      [ Round 116 ] Designers Choice!
      [ Round 117 ] Seasonal
      [ Round 118 ] Fairytale
      [ Round 119 ] Leftovers and Recycling
      [ Round 120 ] Vintage and Retro
      [ Round 121 ] Monochrome
      [ Round 122 ] Theatre/Masquerade
      [ Round 123 ] Unfinished Business
      [ Round 124 ] Pick a Decade
      [ Round 125 ] Working with Scraps
      [ Round 126 ] Bohemian
      [ Round 127 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay
      [ Round 128 ] Basics
      [ Round 129 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings
      [ Round 130 ] Unfinished Business

    2. I might as well start this off with my unfinished outfit from last month!:sweat The oppressive heat did me in I’m afraid, and killed my creativity. But the weather has reverted to more normal high temperatures now, and the rains have finally come, so I’m hoping to finally get this completed since there’s not too much further to go. My model is my Volks F01 4-sisters Megu, Poetta…my shironuri girl…as I try to complete her story robe to illustrate her poem, Legend of the Genie Palace.

Here’s my basic fabrics from my prior construction. I’m already pretty far into the embellishments thus far, so it shouldn’t take too long to finish this up. And then, if I have the time, I plan to use some of the leftover fabric to make a new nightgown set for my Realpuki Soso, Lilith.

    3. I will continue working on a kimono, belt and jacket for a 70+cm guy. It is part of a gift for a friend that I have been working on for the last couple of months. The kimono has a lot of hand sewing left because I made french seams to make it look pretty on the inside.
I also want to finish a T-shirt I have cut out.
And take a dive into my in progress box and see if there is anything I can get done.
And maybe I can manage to finish the quilt I started last spring, although it is not a doll related project it will be nice to have when fall comes.

    4. Hoo boy this round came for me with a vengeance because I used its upcomingness to take the pressure off of my sewing, and now I've got a pile of projects to do :XD::sweat:doh

I've got the top and dress from two rounds ago, the fabric I cut for last round and didn't get farther with, and probably more squirreled away elsewhere. I did actually make some progress on the top, it's shaped and gathered and now all I have to do is finish the bottom edge and put the straps and fasteners on (and finish the straps themselves, but y'know lol). I'll get pictures up sometime when I don't have a cat in my lap determined to monopolize all my attention! ;)

    5. I have so much Unfinished Business it's going to be hard to pick somethign to work on for this round... As usual.

    6. Lets hope I can finish last months challenge this month.

    7. Alright, coming back in to share where I'm at with these projects.

[IMG]20220801_171624 by Jules B, on Flickr
Top is looking cute, half done with the bottom seam and then it's just strap finish&add, and fitting for snaps/buttons!

[IMG]20220801_171736 by Jules B, on Flickr
Dress got decently far before I just completely ran out of steam, I took a break from pretty much anything crafty for a while. Just needs the back edges done up, top hemmed, and once it's done I need to decide if I want to keep it strapless or put on the straps after all (pardon the pinned straps to the bottom, lol, I don't want to misplace them!)

[IMG]20220801_171903 by Jules B, on Flickr
And this was as far as I got with some eveningwear for last round, I have this ruffled frilly tulle I planned to put an elastic channel on, make it either a gown or a skirt depending on the size. I've got the elastic but can't find the matching thread I know I have, so that's annoying :?

Lots to work on this round, as usual! We shall see. Maybe this will finally be the month my minifees get here and I can show off these things on their intended models, lol!

    8. Well I'm moving (officially with the big stuff) a week today. Plus some time to finish unpacking and recover from this ordeal so I might get my haute-couture outfit finished and then I really need to knuckle down and finish an outfit for Jude since he'll apparently be some degree of finished at the end of August, not sure on shipping after that. So he deserves actual clothes.

Plus I'll have more space to spread out and actually work now. Not quite a craft room but a dedicated crafting corner and much much better lighting. So I'm hopeful that that will make me want to craft more.

    9. I definitely want to join in this round in an attempt to finish my project from the last one! I got distracted partway through the month by IRL stuff, and dolly projects went on the back-burner.

      • x 1
    10. Count me in!
Last month and a half was crazy, but things should be setteling down now. I always have a huge pile of stuff to finish and I have to do a bit of an inventory check to se what to work on, there is plenty to chose from.
I'll let you know as soon as I have decided. :)

    11. I have some progress to report! I finished all the embellishments on my “slow stitching” project for Poetta’s story robe from last month.:)

Unfortunately I didn’t notice as I was sewing this that because of the trim obviously stretching out the fabric on one side, the fronts were totally uneven…by more than an inch! No worries however.:sweat Since “slow stitching” is supposed to be imperfect anyway, and everything is pieced, I just added another piece of trim to the bottom of one side to make up the difference (not shown in this photo…I didn’t discover it until after I took the photo.) So after all this work, I’m still good to go.

    12. Nicely saved!

      Well done!

      Teddy

    13. I finished all the hand stitching on the kimono. Only a few more pieces to make for this outfit.

    14. Excellent!

      Teddy

    15. Okay! My leftover project from last month, Poetta’s story robe “Legend of the Genie Palace” is finally complete. Hooray!:cheer

    16. It's beautiful! Well done!

      Teddy

    17. I have so many projects to finish. ^^' I started an outfit for my Ceyran for the last month project but didn't finish it. Maybe I will try to if I can. The weather is insane and I'm always tired... -_-'

@PoeticSoul Gorgeous dress as always. ^^

    18. This!!! So much this.

I got as far as unearthing a(nother) bag of dolly UFO's and sort-of assessing what needs doign to them... and no further.

      Teddy

    19. Thirding the weather complaints.

Moving was successful now to unpack things and find new homes for them. Including my dolls, who will finally have a proper home.

    20. Yay! Good luck with the unpacking and "nesting" part of the process.

      Teddy

    21. It's been far too hot to be very productive here as well.
But I have found an already cut blouse that I need to finish. I think I even ment to finish it the last Unfinished Business round, but never got around to it.
It's the pink thing on top. The blue stuff is a skirt I finished in that previous round.

    22. Me: I'm gonna finish my project from the last round aww yiss
My brain: Okay but what if, velvet overalls?
Me: ... What IF velvet overalls?

      So, velvet overalls happened.

I'm thinking I might redo the straps with a bit of bias tape, as they're a bit bulky for my taste. Other than that, I love how they came out!

    25. @kaschan502 Oh yes! Velvet overalls for the win!:) I love it, and these look amazing. It’s always fascinating how the creative mind works.

    26. @PoeticSoul @kaschan502 looking fabulous, you two!

@Lillith I love finding something that's ready for the next step, it's like setting ourselves up for success in the future :D I love the shade of pink you chose!

I don't have much to report, I had a side-adventure where I crocheted a bunch of bags for my dolls instead of sewing anymore :sweat time to buckle down and get something finished, at least!

    27. I was busy finishing my older project and then I came here and realized that this round is for 'Unfinished Business ':aeyepop: I guess I will be working on my new project and hope that it won't be another unfinished project!

I will be working on pirate theme outfit for my human Resinsoul Dawn. She is pretty new and I don't have a name for her yet. Wish me luck everyone! :celebrate

    29. Missed a week due to no internet access while in hospital - I have a week off now to rest and recover before I go back to work, so might actually get around to working on some of my Unfinished Business.

I did work on altering and re-setting the sleeves on a Victorian style bodice for one of my girls while I was in hospital, but didn't finish as I was mostly too tired to concentrate (two nights of no sleep at all, while I was waiting for a bed to come available - The NHS is really struggling -and very poor sleep the rest of the week - woken for regular tests throughout the night), so only one sleeve is completed and the other is part way sewn back into the armhole.

Hopefully, a bit more will get done now that I'm home and can sleep.

    30. @Teddy Oh no! I hope you’re all right and on the mend finally! That sounds very scary indeed, and not being able to sleep is just awful. I know these things happen in life, but it certainly shoots the heck out of ones creativity…it’s a wonder you got any sewing done at all! Is the pandemic still stressing the health care system in your country? (I’m currently working my way through a minor bout of the BA5 variant here in the states, but I’m fully vaccinated so it’s minor enough that I can just relax quietly at home until it passes.)

    31. @Teddy I ecco what PoeticSould said. I wish you good health!

    32. Thanks, @PoeticSoul and @Lillith, other than the lack of sleep I've felt absolutely as I usually do throughout the whole experience, I was only in at all because blood test results revealead a sitiation that neeed dealing with urgently.

It's more that now the pandemic is "over" the government has swung from praising the health care workers at every turn to chronifally underpaying them, under funding the system, and understaffing it.

Boredom - I was sat there for days with nothing to do but wait while being monitored and tested at regualr intervals. I got through severla books, even more audiobooks and worked on alterign the sleeves when I was awake enough to concnetrte on it.

I'd already removed the sleeves and unpicked the main seam in the outer and lining layers, so I lay them flt, chalked the new sleeve head shape and cut it out on one, then used the piece I'd cut off as a pattern for cuttign the other sleeve head. Then it was a case of resewing the main seam, and setting them back into the armholdes of the bodice. Fiddling ith the first sleeve allowed me to figure out the easiest/best way to do the second sleeve, but pretty much drained my cretive oomph and available energy, so I got it started then set it aside.

Tomorrow, when the dressing comes off my arm, and I'm allowed to start using that hand properly again, I intend to get that second sleeve finished and I'll try it on Nesta to photograph and share here.

    33. I ended up leaving town for a week for an unexpected funeral. I might get some work done, but I'm not going to pressure myself over it. Just gonna take it easy and support family, if I make progress I'll share!

    37. Thanks - I may not get around to any of my UFOs this round - I'm in the thick of two doll commissions I was intending to start the week I was in hospital.

Well done - she looks fab!

    38. Hooray for you!:cheer That came out positively amazing! I can see that it indeed has many pieces, and each one looks so well done. Your girl looks fabulous in this!

    39. Very well done! That turned out great.

I can't seem to find the energy to work on the blouse. It's so silly, if I just sat down I would have it done in an hour or two, but I just have too many other things I feel like I need to (ehm.. or want to) prioritize, I can't seem to actually convince myself to get it done. Still some day to go, but I don't have high hopes.

    40. Aww ok. Please don't work too hard and remember health comes first! I really hope things get much better for you soon.

Thank you! I'm quite happy with the result :D

Thank you! I almost gave up on the outfit but I'm glad I didn't. I might take her to do photoshoot outside too if I'm not too lazy.

      Thank you so much!

Sometimes if you feel like there is something else you need to do first, I think it's ok to leave your project for a while. May be after that you will feel better and want to get back to it again! Good luck :aheartbea

    41. Well, since I completed my main unfinished project earlier (and afterward suffered through a bout of covid that has now thankfully passed, allowing my creativity to claw its way to the surface once again) I thought I would use some of the leftover fabric to make another nightgown set for my haunted little Lilith (Fairyland RealPuki Soso.) Her wardrobe could us a bit of a boost, and this pretty mottled and faded blue sheer fabric would work well for her I think. I know there’s only a few days left in this month, but I have a free weekend so I might be able to pull it off. It’s worth a try anyway.

    44. Hello everyone! I thought this Sewing Project is a fun idea, and as there still are several days left, I'll jump in with my unfinished business. I've been intending to make a pair of Zaoll-sized leggins of this cloth for a long time - nothing too difficult since I've got ready-made patterns, but, you know, it's hard to start. M-hm, maybe I need to adjust the pattern just a little bit as I've tried it and the leggins were slightly too tight (and I want them to fit my another girl too). Ok, no more talking, the photo of what I have now:

    45. these all look amazing!

@WintyGummyBear I love the pompoms! that was such a clever addition, and the corset looks great. did you use bias binding for the edges of the 'laces'?

@kaschan502 the velvet overalls are adorable and look super comfy.

I've been working on some 1890's under things. the goal was to finish them before I leave for school labs in September but I'm not sure if that's going to happen.

@Teddy I know you do some historical sewing, and was hoping for your impute. I think I may have made my corset too thick. I used a layer of cotton sateen, and underlined it with cotton lawn. (the sateen has a slight stretch to it) but now I'm thinking it might be too thick for the doll. I'm also not sure how to do the front busk, I know I'll have to sew the front panels closed, but maybe add some beads up the front to make it look like a busk closure? Have you ever done an 1890s corset for your dolls, what did you use and how did you sew your seams?

I might make a project journal for the Edwardian undergarments. if anyone is interested in that and If I have time.

    46. Kimono, two belts and T-shirt done. Not nearly as productive as I hoped to be.
Then again, I diverted from what I was supposed to do and made two quilted mats, three pillows and a travelling bag for a cat instead.
I did manage to clear out my in progress box a little, but the unfinished quilt I moved from one side of the room to the other and back again. And I now have two pairs of trousers, an old quilt and some bedclothes that need mending, so all in all I think I am back at the same amount of work pending as I was at the start of this month.

Here is to hoping I can manage to do some punk, glamrock, new romantics or freaky fashion next month.

    47. Thanks! I wasn't sure about the pompoms at first but thought it would add a nice touch. No, I didn't use bias binding. (I wish I could but I didn't have one lol) I made it from black fabric :XD:

    48. Well, I did manage to get one thing done! I decided to keep the little experimental top strapless, because it looks so dang cute the way it is. The dolls it's here for still aren't here yet, I don't think I'll ever preorder anything from Fairyland again, but I've got it modeled on an off-topic legit doll on my instagram.

[IMG]Round 113 Unfinished Business by Jules B, on Flickr

I'm very pleased! One more thing a doll can wear, rather than one more project to sit around

    49. @Mamo That is indeed adorable strapless! Good call!:)

And sliding in here just a bit under the wire, I managed to finish a set for my realpuki Lilith, made from a small scrap of leftover fabric from my earlier story robe I finished this month for Poetta.

    50. @PoeticSoul it's absolutely precious!!! I love her hat with the cheery beaded flower <3

    51. Ohh so cute! She looks just like a mermaid!

    52. I have done a dolls Victorian corset, (for an off-topic doll) but I balked at trying to fake the look of a busk in the right scale and made it in a closed-fronted styled rely on lacing her in up the back each time i put it on her or take it off.

I made it in two layers of thin silk with tiny cable-ties as the boning. Cotton lawn sounds right for the lining, but if you feel the sateen makes it look too bulky, you might have used something thin as the outer layer too... perhaps a thin silk or even just a cotton lawn as it doens't need to be sturdy for a doll that doesn't squish - just to look the part.

Your plan of adding row of spaced silver beads might indeed it look like it has an opening busk at the front, if you're particularly keen on that. I know some doll's corset-makers do have them front opeing and put boning either side of the front opening and use ordinary hooks and eyes or hooks and bars to fasten it, so you might want to look into that option.

Another thing i do - to lessen the bulk when dressing dolls in period styles, is to only have the corset on for pictures without the dress over, then take it off and have the dress or other outer layers fit the uncorsetted doll. Most BJD can carry off a reasonable Victorian silhouette without aneeding a corset to give htem the right shape (although I might resort to some stays for a more period silhouette for 18th or 16th Century... it would have to skim over the bumps and dips of the dolls unyielding body to give the necessary smooth, cone-like shape though, which will of necessity, make them a bit chunkier in the body).,

Best of luck with your sorset - I hope you can figure out something you're happy with.

EDITED TO ADD: I just sewed regular seams and pressed them open between the layers

      Yes!

But it didn't get worse - so, PROGRESS!!!

      Yay!

Well done! - it looks very cute on her.
