Wearables Sewing Project: Theater/Masquerade [ Round 139 ]

Oct 1, 2024

    1. Oh wow that explains it so well, I really think I can do it now. Thank you so much, that way it’s explained makes good since! I agree with the patterns and being a way someone elses way of doing them. The fun thing about doing them yourself, you get to be more creative in the process. My mistakes are always my masterpieces. ;)

    2. I actually love the oversized pompoms! They give the vest so much fun character.:)

That belt is absolutely amazing with this outfit! I love the gypsy-esque quality of it.:D

      • x 2
    3. So many creative projects this round! I've finished Ginseng's top, and decided the outfit need a gold satin capelet to go with it, and that's mostly done. Now I need to finish the skirt and capelet and decide if they need any extra decorations. Probably yes, I get to make things over the top this round, so I will!

    4. Thank you all for the kind words about Scuti's outfit! I have made another accessory today to add to his ever-increasing fabulousness:

After initially botching the pattern, I decided to simplify the design of his cloak and just add some decorative paillette trim to match his belt. I'm still feeling the itch to add something to the outfit, so I think I'm going to attempt to make him a hat.

      • x 14
    5. @kaschan502 Oh, more sparkle! A hat sound like the perfect thing to finish the outfit. It is so wonderfully dramatic and glamorous. :D

    6. Well... I started a new project for two new dolls and I didn't do anything that I planned here. XD

Project : I'm currently working on two dolls (1/6), two little girls who looks twins but they aren't. But they have the exact same look. They are from a french rpg actual play (Grimoires et Tentacules), from some episodes for Halloween. Every year in october we have the sequel, it's very cool. The two little girls are two demons who are sisters. ^^

If you want, I can show you what I've done. We can say it fits a little for this round because they are not real little girls. ;) Unfortunately, I can't show you my dolls because they are off topic. But I can show you the dresses.

      • x 4
    7. As long as you aren’t actually showing the OT dolls, we’d love to see your sewing for this. It certainly fits the theme, and since it’s 1/6 size I’d say it’s appropriate in this case.:)

    8. You could post the clothes on the dolls in Brigadoon and simply direct us there. That way you comply with DoA rules and we get to see what you've made on the dolls it is intended for! There are several threads there about crafting for off topic dolls. :)

    9. Just wanted to check in and say I'm all good after the hurricane! It tracked northward so it was very minimal down here where I am. I'm making good progress on the seams, hoping for no issues turning it!

      • x 8
    10. Thank heavens! Our hearts go out to all those suffering from these hurricanes, and we’re so glad you’re safe. Weather disasters are frightening. The chance to come and celebrate a bit of creativity by sewing for dolls is a balm for the soul.:)

    11. We were in the eye and it was brutal, glad I got my sewing finished early. No power still and just got back on line recently. Not as bad off as others although we were in the worst path it took.

This is so unique and I love what you did, It turned out amazing, the colors are perfect. Can’t wait to see the hat you make!

    12. Thanks! I'm glad it came out so well! Here's August, my Dream Valley Paris, who could desperately use more clothes.

    13. Oh goodness he’s adorable! Love the outfit too, did you make that? The shorts are perfect for him, love the color.

    14. Nope! I happened to have the shorts and top when the doll arrived. Now they need some clothes made for them.

    15. Thanks @PoeticSoul ! I admire your creative variety of dolls too.

    16. To quite literally top off my planned project for this month, I finished Scuti's hat this morning!

      (He looks so proud)
Scuti is a BEEG BOI, so I felt a little like a mom taking her kid's photo before trick-or-treating on Halloween night

And a quick phone pic of the hat by itself:

I'm really happy with how the whole outfit came out! I'm kicking around the idea of sewing some things for another doll since there's still half a month left, but I'm also working on a big cosplay build and recovering from sickness, so idk how feasible it's going to be. That being said, I'm still excited to see what everyone else comes up with for their dollies!

      • x 11
    17. Spectacular! She looks so good, that outfit works so well with her sculpt. :D

      That's perfection.

I have finished a hat too! Mine is also pointy, but in floppier sort of way.

      • x 11
    18. That’s the perfect outfit for him and the hat is the icing on the cake, the outfit looks great and the colors are perfect! Hope you get well soon!

That looks amazing, did you hand sew this? Lovely hat and the doll was a perfect candidate for the outfit!

      • x 2
    19. I did! It was a combination of my good sewing machine having a ... moment... and the fabric. It is a wool blend and quite loosely woven and I didn't trust my other machine to handle it very well. :sweat

Fun fact about the fabric choice: I am a long time larper and I do occasionally play jester characters. These fabrics are the scraps from making a late 14th century, particolored, fitted jacket with tippets and a long row of fabric buttons down the front, that I wear for that. So, I've spent enough hours hand sewing these fabrics in the past to think nothing of making a small doll hat. I even took the time to fell the seam allowances, witch is kind of excessive for this, but it does look neat. :)

      • x 5
    20. It does look very neat, you definitely have skill! I love the hand sewing, it adds a lot of character to the outfit!

I’m looking forward to seeing it all together, I love this group of all the groups on DoA, it’s nice to follow along with the progress photos of each individual throughout the month.

    21. @kaschan502 he looks fantastic! amazing work in only two weeks, too, holy cow :love
@Lillith oh my goodness she's so precious!! I would let her apprentice in a heartbeat, she's sure to be a crowdpleaser! :chibi

I'm way behind on posting my process photos so there's gonna be a ton of stuff in the spoiler lol!!

[IMG]Round 139 pieces by Jules B, on Flickr
with my lining pieces cut out and the two sides assembled, they sort of reminded me of very surprised bunny rabbits laid out lol

[IMG]Round 139 the TURNING point, haha by Jules B, on Flickr
From there, I started the slow work of sewing up all the relevant seams. This is where I started procrastinating, even after the hurricane, because I found myself getting more and more apprehensive about turning it

[IMG]Round 139 the TURNING point, haha by Jules B, on Flickr
To my surprise, I had no issues at all!! Even without ironing or any topstitching whatsoever it still looks nice and neat! I plucked the points open with a pin to finish turning them since they're so small.

[IMG]Round 139 the TURNING point, haha by Jules B, on Flickr
I'm delighted by how it's looking. I really value clean lines in my own work unless the specific project calls for something else, and with something like this that neatness element really matters! I'm really glad I went for the lining in the end, it was so much less of a hassle than I expected with something as fiddly as this for my first crack at it.

But long story short, here's a better look at where we are now!! I'm so relieved to have had no trouble turning it. I'm really extremely pleased!!
[IMG]Round 139 vest of the vest lol by Jules B, on Flickr

Next stop is detail and topstitching, two more things I usually CBA to do lmfao! Maybe this will reform me by the end of the month :XD:

I have a limited amount of the lace left, so I'm thinking starting off with fake pocketflap detailing and going from there. The rosette pin I made to go with it looks nice, but I'd like to play around with the placement to make it stand out more against more of the same print around it. I thought about incorporating a layer of pleated/ruffled lining fabric around it, but I'm not sure I want to make it so much heftier and how big that would need to be. Things to think about!!!

EDIT: I forgot, I also have to think about how I want to end up fastening this thing. I regret not extending out the pattern for the back piece just a bit more on either side. The fronts are fine, I just won't be putting in the darts the pattern called for, but as it stands I suspect the ends may not meet once the side seams are done up.
Maybe I'll take a trip to the fabric store and find a fancy cloak clasp to do it up in the middle!

    22. Hello,
I'm a little late this month and I skipped a lot of the previous months, because I haven't been very motivated to do much.
This week my current project is going well and I feel motivated to post it.
I'm making Hanfu for each of my 60cm+ dolls. I love ancient Chinese style attire, they're so gorgeous and have beautiful flowing layers. This will be the first matching set for my dolls, and I plan to do more in the future.
I'm mostly inspired by the wonderful Hanfu outfits on legenddoll, Loong Soul's beautifully sculpted and dressed dolls, and the Manhua and shows set in ancient China that I enjoy reading/watching.

The design for this project is based off this hanfu on legenddoll.

Most the fabrics I picked out are chiffon and organza. The ones for my current project are white chiffon, black pleated organza, grey embroidered tulle, and a black organza with silver stars that I forgot to add to the picture.

I already finished the outer garment for my doll. His name is Vethrien and he's a Telethesia Mei Jiu Qi.

Here's the first one I completed a few weeks ago. His name is Leto and he's a Loong Soul Jiao Mu Jiao.

    23. Oh! It came outso cute!

It is a lovely outfit - I envy him that shirt in particular.

And adorable too. Perfect for the character

Could you set a strip of fabric into each side seam to give you that bit of extra width around the body?
I've done this on ful sized clothing and costumes and it barely shows, bing behind the arm when worn.

It looks lovey with all those stars on the sheer black fabric.

    24. This looks so nice, I love the material and it looks so nice on your doll.

I’m curious how you sew the side seams last, my mind can’t seem to figure it out, can you tell me please. On my outfit I made I sewd one side wrong sides together but left it that way because it was an orphan outfit and I don’t like seam ripping. :whee:

Those both are amazing, Isn’t it nice to create your own full sets, the materials on both are so perfect.

    25. This turned out so well! It really shows off your boy’s character, and that hat is the epic finishing touch. And I’m still absolutely loving that belt!;)

This is truly adorable…what tremendous character this hat imparts! Well done:)

This is shaping up to be such a cute outfit! I love the flower, and I think the lace pocket flap idea is a wonderful touch.:thumbup

Such exciting plans! And what you’ve already done is epic! I love looking at these kinds of outfits, so this is a real treat for me.:D

    26. Haven't been able to make much progress on my project so far because of my work hours, but I've started making a mockup pair of pants based on a pair I had that fit Aurelius (random pair of chinos labelled 70cm+ from Mandarake), so for now he's going to get some pyjama pants so I can test the fit.

      • x 4
    27. Ok, so, note to self: never ever sew silk velvet and silk lining together. :horror:. No amount of starch, pins and tacking will make these fabrics stay in place. I tried using the sewing machine and had to rip out the seam - a curving line somehow went zig-zaging all over the place. So now I'm in hand-sewing hell of my own making. In some places it is necessary to adjust after every stitch.
But I am not giving up because the materials are so good looking. The velvet in particular is shiny and drapes beautifully under its own weight. The end is in sight. Then it will be decorations and something to go under the cape.
The making of this cape is as dramatic as the final garment is going to be :XD:

    28. Yeah... some fabrics are buggers to work with.

      Teddy

    29. I adore the qualities of silk velvet & learned to admire it as a puddle of fabric not to be sewn...as it always leads to hair loss & tears. ;}
Hope it lets you complete the project Helgie!

Draft pants are in progress! The fit is good, I've worked out where to put darts on the back, and I'll make the final pair a bit longer. I was working on the waistband but ran out of natural light, so that's for this Sunday.

      • x 9
    31. I absolutely love these already like this, awesome material! ;)

    32. @mydaffer Thank you! I make doll pyjamas out of my old pyjamas when they wear out :)

    33. I finished the inner layer top a day ago, it went smoothly; I've gotten a lot better at sewing chiffon. Ironing the seams and hem before and after makes a world of difference.
I decided to do the collar differently then the base design because I like the look better. I shortened the outer coat's sleeves a bit so they line up better. I'll be working on the skirt next, then the belt. Once his outfit is finished I'll probably jump right into the next one; for Hel, my 2dDoll Snow.

    34. I love your boy he's very cute. I have such a love for pastel color schemes and it matches him so well. Can't wait to see the details you decide to add.

Hope you'll get plenty of time to make what you want for him. Aurelius is such a unique doll and has a nice body; he's bound to look great in an array of outfits. The pants are looking good! I've always found pants to be the hardest to fit; there's a lot nuances in pattern making for them that I haven't figured out yet.

    35. I emerge victorious from the unfair battle with silk velvet :XD::
[IMG]Stargazer - progress 1 by helgie, on Flickr
I plan to add decorative knots and ties on the shoulders, where the pins are now. The purple fabric needs to be washed to get the starch out, then I will need to re-iron the cape and try to make the purple folds in front lie more flat. But all in all it turned out well and close to the initial idea. The black part is mostly half-circle, with the sides and back longer than the front to make the tail.
Underneath Amadis is wearing black net tights that I made yesterday. I plan to add a shirt made of the same stretchy net as an underlayer for a vaguely elizabethan-style costume, with puffy sleeves and short trousers and ruffs, all in black.
The costume will be of an astronomer - stargazer of a fantastical royal court. I'll need to look for star-themed accessories.

    36. @Helgi Gorgeous fabric! I can see why you were persistant at sticking with it even though it was so slippery!

Draft pants are finished! I ended up using elastic for the waist on this pair, as they're pyjamas, but I have an idea how I'm going to do the darts and front closures on the final version.
It's rainy today, so a good day for sewing! Got all my final pieces cut out and zigzagged, so it's time to put the pants together

    37. I'm impressed. I balk at the thought of sewing chiffon.

      Well done!!!

Yay - I love it when a mock-up can be used as an actual garment.

    41. @kaschan502 I absolutely love how her dress matches her faceup!!!! :D Perfect for such a sweet celestial shepherd!

We had a bout of beautiful weather here which had me outside doing sanding work on a BJD kit rather than sewing in the air conditioning, lol. It's about to get hot again (:...() so I'll be spending this last week of the month finishing my topstitching and detailing on my vest!

@helgie The astronomer costume looks impressive so far!

I finished August outfit. (The pattern was intended to be medical scrubs for Barbie. The pants are a bit snug, so I'll use a Ken-sized version next time) I'd like to make a felt jacket to go with it, but don't really have any the right color. Here's the outfit for now.

    46. Oh my gosh that is so darn cute, I absolutely love it! Well done! ;)

    47. @Leo Pheonix Cute, cute, cute! And such a perfect match for the fall season too.:)

    48. @Leo Pheonix August is looking fantastic!! I love the felt jacket plan, it's such a cohesive look and I think it'll really complement the patterns you picked!

I've got the shoulder topstitching done on both armholes, now it's just the long continuous slog of... everything else haha :sigh It's already looking really good, so I know it'll be worth it. I just gotta push myself to get through it to enjoy the results!!!!

    49. I finally got the skirt finished. I ran into a few issues with the plated organza I was originally going to use; sewing it together was a huge pain and once I finished that, I found it wasn't wide enough. I really don't want to use fabric like that again.
Luckily I had some nice black to white ombre chiffon that I used instead and pleated myself. I did temporarily forget my brain when I cut fabric for a lining and forgot what the shape of a skirt is. All these minor things meant I couldn't finish as much as I had hoped, but it turned out well so it's ok.
I've decided to do another layer for the top wear using black chiffon. Then the belt will be embroidered grey tulle.

    50. @Alamentine what a lovely ensemble!! He'll be so handsome in the full outfit :D

    51. Aurelius's outfit is finished!
I repurposed a secondhand top from the op shop and used it for the front with the ruffles, and took off a ruffle to use on the bottom hem. It's not perfect, but I'm quite happy with the result! It's my first time sewing for the DZ 70cm boy body, so I was drafting the shirt pattern as I went. The buttons are out of scale, but I figure if I find a nice metal button down the line, it would make a nice decorative closure like a pin.

    53. So many good and fun outfits this month! I've had a lot of stress scrambling towards finishing work projects and I spent a week down with covid in the meanwhile so doll crafts did not happen this month. Sorry Nonoo! Maybe next time there's a good theme I'll finish the hat.

I have cut a simple shirt for Beatrice, but despite it being simple, I will not have time to sew it this round.
It's half past nine in the evening here, the last trick-or-treaters have probably given up, there is a bit of a storm going on outside. It's been a long day and I will not be doing any sewing tonight.

See you in the next round!
