Wearables Sewing Project: Theater/Masquerade [ Round 122 ]

May 1, 2023

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

This month we’re going to indulge in a bit of escapism by exploring outfits that our dolls might wear to a masquerade ball, or in a mardi gras parade, or in a movie onscreen, or in a play at the theater, or in a musical. It’s all about flights of fancy, wherever your imagination and creativity takes you.:)

      Week 1: 5/1-5/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 5/8 to 5/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 5/16 to the end of May
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 123 ] Unfinished Business
      [ Round 124 ] Pick a Decade
      [ Round 125 ] Working with Scraps

    2. Maybe I will join this month if I have time, with Elesya, my Unoa on a Imda body. She needs a circus outfit to fit her face-up and her wig. ^^

    3. I’ve been waiting for this round! :) I think all my minifees will share this costume. I’m going to make a blue ballerina costume. I’m going to use a ballerina pattern I found on Etsy. And if that one doesn’t work out, I’ll use a corset pattern by Requiem Arts Design.

    4. Not sure if I can commit, but I am SO watching this thread.

    5. Won't be participating but will definitely be watching! This theme sounds like a lot of fun, can't wait to see what everyone makes :)

    6. I'm trying to get back into the sewing/crafting gang so I might participate this time! I'm thinking of doing a mask. :)

    7. Yet another round I SHOULD take part in but probably won't get time to do more than cheer from the sidelines as everyone else posts their progress...

      Best of luck, everyone!

    8. I’m still working on building the wardrobe for my newest barbarian girl, Xandria (Doll Leaves Hily.) Fortunately her basic warrior goddess look fits nicely into this month’s theme. I found these nice light green sari scraps in my stash, along with some pretty green jewelry pieces, so that’s what I’ll use.

    9. Oh, several promising projects already, this is going to be good! :dance

I will join with Benny. He is a Miracle Doll Vic head on a Dollzone body.
I made this jester outfit for him in a previous round. Rather than making a brand new outfit, I will stretch the rules a bit and upgrade the existing one.
There is one complicating factor and that is that my good sewing machine is a bit out of sorts. This means that whatever I make, I either have to do it by hand, or make it work with the other machine.
Despite this, I do have a long list of things I would like to either add or replace. Here they are, ordered somewhat by order of priority.
      1. Some kind of outer wear, probably a coat. I have this image in my head of a very wide coat that can be spread out on the ground for him to preform acrobatics on. So, a durable outer fabric and a fancy lining.
      2. An instrument case for his lute.
      3. New socks. The ones he has was made because I couldn't find a better fabric at the time, but now I have time to go through my stash a bit more thuroughly.
      4. A new collar. This one was made last minute so that he'd have anything at all.
      5. Better shoes.
      6. A bag of some kind. I think of him as a wandering entertainer.

There is no way I will get all that done for this round, but I can make a start.

    10. I'm making a dress for Jaala, my Gem of Doll Capricorn this round. I made her a green masquerade themed dress some time ago, but I think she could use another one. I have a layered gathered skirt in mind, and had this lovely gray rose print fabric waiting for just the right project.

Bought the tulle I wanted for this project! I already had the blue satin, flowers, beads, and ribbon. I still need to print out the pattern :sweat

    12. Oooh...what if the bag was one of those big circles pulled closed with a drawstring that could become the performing circle when laid out flat? ;}

    13. It would have to be a pretty big bag. I think I'll stick with the coat.

    14. Some progress so far.

    15. Great start!

    16. Usually I'd want to grab pictures but I know me, if I wait for pictures it's not happening any time soon!

A little while back I found some lovely satiny orange (I think it's orange, I'm going off my memory) fabric at the thrift store. The thing is, it's like, half of a dress! I'd originally passed on it because there were two halves of the dress in the fabric bin, but I guess someone took one half? So I went fine, I'll do something with the other.

I want to make matching formalwear for Ara and Suha. Their deal is they're supposed to be royalty, they need clothes to go to fancy balls with. I think I'm gonna start with just a waistcoat for Ara so he gets at least something, because I really wanna make some kind of frilly, poofy dress for Suha. I've seen a few patterns for such on Etsy, I just need to hunt them down again and pick a style. Preferably by tomorrow afternoon, so I can go to the library and print it out.

If I get both the waistcoat and poofy dress done, I'll try to work on more stuff to fill out Ara's outfit.

    17. This is going faster than I thought hahaha Even with a few bumps. I needed to extend the back closure and crotch piece of the leotard to fit Minifee. She’s apparently too bootylicious for the pattern
      [IMG]Leotard lining wip 2
So now that the lining/mock-up is finished, I can cut out the pieces in the blue satin! Honestly I am so surprised by how well this fits! I was so worried cuz you never know til you try with patterns.

      • x 6
    18. @JaxxCapta That certainly is a bit of an odd find, but the project sounds lovely.
@lully.lullers That is coming along nicely!

I have made a mock up for the coat. I will reuse the mock up as the outer fabric and I am working on a patch work lining. I'm making an honest atempt at it, anyway, I don't have much experience beyond what we were taught in school when I was a kid, and a few half hearted scrap projects through the years.
Here are the parts, anyway. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it. :XD:

    19. Yay! Seems like we're going to have some lovely creations this round.

It's Coronation day, here in the UK, and I'm spending it sewing dolls clothes, but it's a commission for an of-topic doll not for this round, unfortunately. Tomorrow we have our Coronation Street Party, then an extra Bank Holiday day on Monday when I'll be back to the full-sized sewing project I need to get done by the ned of the month... It's not looking hopeful for me to join in with you all this month (again!)

But I'm here cheering you all on.

    20. I finished the pretty side of the leotard! I deviated from my sketch but I’m liking the outfit so far! I think I even make a journal for this project cuz I’m proud of my work so far :chibi Not to toot my horn lol

    23. Your project is looking great so far! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

    24. Thank you! :chibi

Here is my latest progress! I added beads, rhinestones, pearls, and a flower. I did a few trials of the gem pattern. It was easy cuz they were stickers for scrapbooking. And I went with a butterfly inspired pattern. :thumbup But I had to ditch the lining. It was too thick, it didn’t look right for her scale. Which was a bummer cuz I was trying to avoid visible stitches. It’s okay though.

      • x 11
    25. The visible stitching doesn't detract from the look of it at all.

      Teddy

      • x 1
    26. @lully.lullers Yes indeed, sometimes you must forgo a nice neat interior that won’t show in favor of a better scale for what does. This is so pretty!:)

      • x 1
    27. I think it still looks great. Rather a few visible stitches than unwanted bulk. The stithing is nice and neat, it doesn't distract the eye, especcially not with the pretty decorations to focus on!

Speaking of linings: I have finished the patchwork lining for the coat. It's far from perfect, but I think it will look all right once it's in there. And finished is supposed to be better than perfect, right?

    28. @Lillith What a perfect match to Benny´s outfit. Nice work!

      • x 1
    29. As I would not have time to join this round I've just been silently watching all the lovely projects. Everyone's outfit parts looks great so far. I'm see a lot of your guys with fantastic pieces and worrying over the small things, so small reminder that perfection is the enemy of good. I can't wait to see the out comes of all your hard work, and I hope next time this theme comes up I'll have enough free time to join in too. ^_^

      • x 2
    30. That will look LOVELY. Well done!

      Absolutely!

Plus you, as the maker, will tend to focus more on the "imperfections" you know are there where others probably wouldn't notice them.

    31. @Lillith Ohhhh…I love how colorful that is! This is such a wonderful idea for a cloak, and it will add so much to your doll’s special character.:)

    32. [IMG]
My tutu is done! And the leotard is probably 90%. I still have to do the back closure. I’m also going to add more beads along the top. It’s only on the front side as of now. Then just the armbands and maybe a headpiece. I was gonna use part of a fullset, but now I’m unsure. I’m a sucker for wreaths and flower crowns. :chibi:daisy

    33. @lully.lullers That is beautiful so far! I am a sucker for roses/flowers as trim like that. <3

    34. {applause!}

Good luck with the finishing touches.

    35. @lully.lullers Those roses are just too precious! And the beading adds such a nice touch. (But ahhh, having to do back closures. Reasons my own mostly-done projects end up piled on my end table...)

    36. @lully.lullers I truly love the way this outfit has progressed! So gorgeous and downright magical!:D

    37. Thank you! :aheartbea

Thank you and haha most of my unfinished clothes end up being worn with a pin keeping it closed. I always say, oh I'll get to it. I have a weird aversion for sewing snaps.

    38. I finished my outfit early this month (for a change!) My barbarian girl’s (Xandria) wardrobe is coming along nicely. I really loved this pretty celery green fabric with her skin tone. I finished this quickly enough that I might make her another warrior goddess costume before the month is out…perhaps in pink this time.:)

      I
’m calling it good now! I decided against the armband idea cuz I think she is styled enough. I had been modeling the costume on a tan A-line body but she does not have a head yet lol I plan on dyeing and event head to match once it comes in. So I have the little costume pictured on my Sarang22 girl on an F-line body. :thumbup So glad this piece is finished! I had been dying to see it all put together with the shoes and head.

    41. Sorry about the double post, but I finished the coat!

Here it is worn. He can wear it either fully closed or with the front edges folded back to reveal the lining. Because of the circular cut the botom edge is not level, but at least it falls nicely in deep folds making it look like a proper garmet. I was a little bit worried that it would be too shapeless, but that worked out all right.

And here it is spread out for him to preform on.

Over all, I'm very happy with how it turned out.

    42. @lully.lullers That looks absolutely fabulous on your girl! All the little details are so pretty.:)

@Lillith What can I say? This coat is truly epic! What a great piece of clothing that adds tremendous definition to his character. Well done!:D

    44. @Teddy @PoeticSoul and @Tippetarius Thanks guys, you are all so kind. :aheartbea

I'm happy the coat came together so quickly. Now I have time for at least one more of the items of my list, perhaps more.

    45. Thank you everyone for the kindness! :chibi I love having a place to sew together.
We did finish fast! Only half the month! For me it's cuz I have a lot of projects in line lol This is the year I get things done. :evilplot:

    46. All the projects are so cool ! Good work everyone !
I work on my contest for now so I can't begin the month round until I finish it. And it's almost done so I hope I can sew for my circus girl soon. ^^

    47. @Lillith That coat is incredible! I love how it transforms from a garment to a stage!

    48. I always keep an eye on this thread since don’t have a lot of time for sewing but I love seeing everyone’s projects every month. @lully.lullers: your ballerina outfit is beautiful! The flower details and beading are a great finish. @PoeticSoul your Zandira looks terrific in her new warrior goddess outfit. @Lillith the jester coat is amazing!

    49. Just wanted to check in and say I am now working on an intrument case. No pictures yet. Right now I am making a plaster plug (something like a shoe last, but for a lute) to shape the leather around. The plan is a hard leather outer shell (wax hardened, veg. tanned goat) and a felt interior.

      • x 4
    50. Absolutely delighted by the projects y'all have going! The coat, the warrior goddess, the tutu, they all look fantastic, and I love all the different interpretations of the theme. There's a little bit of everything going on!

With mine, eh, the ballgown stalled out, and poor Ara's vest never got off the ground. Once the vest pattern printed, I realized it looked more like the size of things I'd use for Megu, my DearSD, rather than a slim MSD like Ara. Oops! The ballgown looked to be the right size, but I realized my scarlet and gold looked a bit like ketchup and mustard when actually sewn together, so I tried to compensate with some purple ribbon to pull it a bit more in the sunset direction... then it turned out the sleeves don't fit the doll's hands. And I don't have any kind of dressing paddles. So it's sitting there while I either decide to suck it up and, in all likelihood, trim the sleeves down short, or see what I can do to unhand Suha for dressing without having to restring her arms each time.

Here's what it looks like so far:

But, y'know, I did get some other sewing done. I worked a bit on the tulle monster I started last round, and new arrival Nikki's (I'm breaking all my doll rules this year) getting her wardrobe filled out. An oversized sweater when it's been hitting the seventies? That just won't do. And hey, uh, this one skirt does use some piano fabric I found stashed away? Musical theater, I guess :sweat It's currently getting the classic "soak to shape" treatment, but I gave it a try on beforehand.

    51. @JaxxCapta Progress is progress. You've got a lot done even if it didin't all turn out exactly as planned. I like the colour combinations on the dressbodice, good call on the purple ribbon. And the red skirt looks whimsical and fun, clearly fit for the stage. :)

Good hand paddle substitues are things like paper clips, buttons (the kind with a loop on the back) or large beads with a wire loop through the hole. Just pull the hand out, secure the elastic by shoving a pencil or similar in the elastic loop, hook off the hand and hook on the substitue instead. Pull out to release the tension on the pencil and pull it out, let the hand substitute back gently until it rests on the wrist. You can use almost anything that has the right size and something for the hook to grab.

      • x 1
    52. @JaxxCapta I really like what you did with the addition of purple to that color scheme…sunset indeed! And I’m loving the skirt with the piano details at the hem. You’re right…perfect musical theater! Well done!:thumbup

    53. Well, I just finished my spring cleaning and I believe I have enough time left this month to make another warrior goddess outfit for my barbarian girl, Xandria (Doll Leaves Hily.) I’ve chosen a few sari scraps in warm pink:

      • x 8
    54. Those are some lovely fabrics!

    55. And I’ve finished her pink outfit! I was very proud of myself for getting it done, but then I glanced over at my pile of scraps (big mistake) and suddenly noticed that there was enough pieces of fabric and jewelry bits to make just one more…in deep magenta this time.:doh So I’ve decided (or you might say my doll decided, slave driver that she is) to surge forward to the end of the month and attempt to make one final warrior goddess costume for her. If I can get it done, her wardrobe will at last be complete.

    57. After procrastinating due to my pattern book not having specific instructions, and getting a bad cold, I'm working on Jalaa's grey dress again. The grey ribbon won't get used in this project, but a lot of the lace will.

      • x 1
    58. I will have to declare myself defated when it comes to the intrument case. Too many other things drained my crafting energy. I still intend to finish it eventually, but it won't be within this months deadline.
Best of luck to those of you still working on last minute things!
