Wearables Sewing Project: The Alternative Styles: Lolita/Decora/Gothic/Punk/Steampunk/etc. [ Round 148 ]

Jul 1, 2025

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Now it’s time to explore the more unusual takes on fashion: those fascinating and creative alternative styles that are so much fun for our crew to wear. Whether it is Lolita/Decora/Gothic/Punk/Steampunk/Glamrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics/etc, or anything else on the fringes of traditional fashion, this is the perfect opportunity for you to stretch your creativity and give it a go.:)

      Week 1: 7/1 to 7/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 7/8 to 7/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 7/16 to the end of July
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 149 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore
      [ Round 150 ] Designer’s Choice!
      [ Round 151 ] Seasonal
      [ Round 152 ] Fairytale
      [ Round 153 ] Leftovers and Recycling

    2. I might as well start this off with a temporary project I’m currently working on while I anxiously await the delivery of the fabrics I’ve officially ordered for this round. The themes are the same: a country girl inspired Lolita outfit, like the one I made last month.

My fashion victim once again is Euphemera (Luts Senior Delf Aru.) I love her so much, I cannot stop sewing for her!:sweat

And this is the casual country Lolita style I’m going for, based on my patterns from last month.

I’m using the same sweet yellow gingham I used last round for the blouse and bloomers, and this super-sweet Carebears fabric for the skirt.:)

    3. I am excited over this one! I've been wanting to make outfits for my boys band! I have four boys, one of them is on order, but I have a stand in waiting for the final picture if necessary. I actually bought more material for this last week, which is silly because I probably have black and white material laying around and just needed the patterned one.

The shaded area in the picture is black, the clear area is white, and the part that has 'P' written all over it is the pattern. It's basically shirts with long shorts, but the pattern combo makes it more edgy and uniformed for the band.

[IMG]IMG_9317 by Rabbid Bunnies, on Flickr

Funny thing, I originally bought this other awesome pattern that was black and white tie-dyed with rainbow skulls... turns out it belonged to this band called Grateful Dead. I didn't want to use another bands logo. I'm not that familiar with their music, but I had a friend who loved it. It felt weird using the pattern, so I went out and got the music notes instead.

    4. I'm jumping in on this right away, in fact I was waiting for this round with anticipation. I searched the themes to see if there was any I could participate in and I found one, it's Decora. So while waiting I picked out the inspirations (probably will differ tremendously!) and materials. I will add extras I'm certain LoL because I never follow my own plans precisely!

It will probably take a while before I'm done because I want to mock up some of the pieces first. I'll be sewing for two dolls, Narbarro Booth head on an Aria 14yr old elegance boy body (she's a girl) and Dimdoll Terrance complete he's a boy.

Sorry, I can't do spoilers on my IPhone for some reason. When I posted this here I hit the wrench up top for spoiler and it moved my post to the last sewing thread??

I made their outfits quickly to show what they look like without layers on them. ;)

    5. I would join this month, as have an incoming doll that needs a steampunk outfit, but sadly the boy is I think off topic. So I will just be watching once again.

    6. @PoeticSoul the CareBear material is adorable, once again I’m waiting with excitement too see this adorable outfit unfold! ;)

@RabbidBunnies awesome sewing project for your boys, I’m anxiously looking forward too the big reveal! ❤️

    7. @PoeticSoul The Lolita outfit is going to be awesome. I think that style is so cute, and love the care bear print! Your girl is adorable, of course she needs lots of clothes!

@mydaffer I love Decora I don't have any characters that wear it, but I have at least two dolls that wish I would! I just don't know how to put the look together. I am looking forward to seeing how your two dolls outfits turn out!

I am so excited to see what everyone does for this month!

    9. I'd like to join and make a gothic outfit for Amadis (Thel by Bardo Research).
It must be the weather, which has been dreadful these last few days, but I'm in the mood for some doom and gloom.
I've also wanted to try making a leather harness, went looking for references of pentagram-shaped ones and came across this pentagram "armor" dress from Gareth Pugh spring 2015 collection. I'll attempt to recreate this design in 1:6 scale.
So the specific style is goth minimalism.
Materials will be rather thick natural black leather for the "armor" and silk/viscose black fabric with tiny ribbing for the dress.
      Here's Amadis:

Monochrome black should look good on her, I think.

    10. Ooh this looks fun. I've been "planning to start" making some clothes for my dolls for.... a while now, but this should help keep me actually get stuff done. We shall see how this goes!

I've been unable to stop playing this gacha game called Dislyte, which has its flaws, but none of them are the character designs. The basic idea is like a modern fantasy where some everyday folks find themselves imbued with the power of an ancient god, and they have to fight monsters. They've leaned into the urban fashion vibes a lot with the characters' designs, which are pretty unique among games I've played, and some of 'em are kinda really cool.

I'd also been meaning to make some sort of street fashion style outfits for Yoshizumi, my IslandDoll Seven. I envision him with sort of an eccentric urban vibe going on. I just need to, you know, actually make stuff.

A few examples of characters in Dislyte where I really like their outfits or design elements from them are Chu Yao, Feng Xun, and Zhong Nan. I'm thinking I'm gonna try to put together an outfit inspired by them, for Yoshi. Pants similar to Chu Yao's with the two layer thing; some sort of crop jacket and/or haori jacket with maybe a plain tanktop under it; and a bucket-hat with holes for his ears because it would be funny. I've got a bunch of beads and things from the last time I was left unsupervised in a craft store, so I'll be able to make some cool accessories, too, hopefully.

Lost my job last month, so I certainly have time now, at the very least! Hopefully having a month-long project with little progress check-ins will help me feel better with something fun to do during all the "waiting for HR people to maybe get back to me" time ahead of me.

    11. I've been planning to make the Angelic Pretty dress in GLB22 for months, but I still haven't got around to ordering materials. There's patterns in both SD and human size, so obviously I need to make both and twin with Maddie. I guess this is my sign to finally get my butt in gear?
I'm thinking I'll do it in red polka dot with broderie anglais lace, but it looks like the best place to order what I want is taobao and I'm not sure if the materials would even arrive by the end of the month. I was tentatively planning that if I go to Dolly Day Barcelona we'd wear them, so I suppose I really should get a move on with it...

    12. Ooh I don't have any dolls whose styles match this theme, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you all make! Everything sounds really fun so far!

    13. I was so excited about this round I started yesterday about an hour after @PoeticSoul posted it. I worked off and on until 130am LoL

I had everything picked out prior to starting because I finished last round a bit early. I made patterns for the boys clothes yesterday and mock ups, I can post later here as I didn’t take a picture of them.

Anyway, I need help. The boys shirt is very stretchy and the neck is an issue. At the moment it needs washed because it’s stretched out of place but I didn’t find anything to uses as a collar, and the girls top needs lined its not sewed on the sides yet. and I always have issues trying to line a bodice. Any suggestions on what to do and how to fix would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to mess anything up this far along. Thank you!

    14. Have you top stitched around it on the shirt-side of the seam to keep the facing from rolling to the outside?

      Teddy

      • x 1
    15. @Teddy Honestly, I don’t understand. You mean roll the boys shirt neck inward and top stitch with facing? Or the girls shirt? i looked on youtube for examples but I’m not finding what I need there. I need a collar for the tee for the boy but I’m not sure how to make one. I base stitched the blue material at the top neck but it’s not satisfying.

    16. The boy's shirt. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like you've sewn the collar piece into the shirt and the part that is meant to stay inside (ie : the facing) has rolled to then outside. I assumed that's what you were talking about.

You lay the part that is meant to remain inside the sirt into place and top stitch next to the seam libne to hold that piece in place on thge inside

Here's a good set of instructionsfor sewing T shirts that include the neck part and show what I'm talking about

    17. @Teddy thank you thank you!! That helps so much! I just based the thing to the collar for the boy, I’ll take it off, wash the shirt to get form back and try my luck with the correct way! ;)

    18. I'm planning on making something along the lines of this SartoriaJ top for Cloud (47cm Telesthesia Xiao Bei). If I have time, I'd like to make him some properly fitting pants, too, since his current pair are too short.

I ended up tracing the pattern for the OP this evening. I've not used a pattern from Gothic&Lolita Bible in years and I forgot how much information is on the pattern sheet. Weirdly, other than the collar pieces, the seam allowances are 1cm, whereas other premade SD patterns I've used more commonly seem to have 5mm.

    20. I'm going to be making an outfit for my GrB Williams from Volks's Sewing for Super Dollfie Volume 1. The set translates to something along the lines of "smelling the wind" – I'm sure it's much more poetic in Japanese. The set is meant for SD13 boys, but the GrB Revival body is pretty much the same with upgraded joints, so I think it should fit.

I've cut out all the pattern pieces and make a mockup of the shirt, which has been promising so far and given me more overlocker practice.
Apparently the jacket in the set runs big – one DoA crafter back in the day put it on a 70cm boy – so adjusting that will be interesting.

My boy in his mockup shirt (please forgive late night phone photo):

    21. ... Not me realizing because of your post that Gothic & Lolita Bibles have patterns in them. I have one that a friend gave me years ago, but I never bothered to crack it open because I didn't get that much into Lolita fashion. :sweat

Looking forward to seeing what you make!

    22. That' the sort of detail I'd fail to notice and blythely go ahead and sew the thing using the "standard" quarter-inch seam allowance I'm used to for doll and toy patterns.

I find it very irritating when patterns use non-standard seams. I still forget to add seam-allowance to Burda clothing patterns before I cut out the garment (a reason I seldom use Burda patterns), and I have to remind myself constantly, when making historical costumes that a bunch of the small specialist compaines that produce patterns for them use a half-inch seam allowance instead of the "standard" 5/8 inch that the big commercial pattern companies (except Burda) use.

      Teddy

    23. These are my hand draw patterns, I’m impressed they actually cut out and fit nicely since I eyeball size. I did make the pants more sd 17 rather then 10-13 oops… but that worked out because now I can make my Dollshe Bernard a pair of pants. The top I’m using for both dolls I’m sewing for. My mock up was quickly stitched to see if it would worked.

    24. I got the shirts and long shorts cut out. I kept thinking I wanted something like a hoodie, but not attached to a shirt. Then I remembered aviator caps, so I decided to make a hat pattern where I cross a hoodie with an aviator cap. I think it will turn out looking good. I am hopeful for this hat. Then the band can wear the hoodie hats or not, or even use them like a scarf accessory.

      Everything cut out...

    26. I'm so glad I found this! I had no idea these sewing challenges were here; I am hoping to use them to motivate me to actually sew and not just think about sewing. I can't wait to see what everyone makes!

This is Elycia, my casual goth girlie. She is an Iplehouse, Aaliyah E.I.D. in special real resin. I got her in 2016 and I have been meaning to sew her character-appropriate clothes since. I plan on making her a long black skirt, a mesh body suit, and/or a black shirt to go overtop. I have the materials on hand; I am recycling some of my old clothes for the skirt and shirt and I have purchased a small amount of very soft and flexible netting for the body suit. Depending on how bulky the body suit/shirt combo is, I may combine them into one clothing piece - an opaque front with mesh sleeves and back. The skirt shouldn't really need a pattern, and I will draft the pattern for the top/s myself.

    28. Erm... I'd be leary of sharing links to scans of published works unless you know for certain it's put up by the original copyright holder. Otherwise they're basicallly theft of the copyright holder's material.

    29. ah thanks, i took the link off, unfortunately though for anyone looking for those patterns the glbs they are in aren't published anymore and are hard or pricy to find

    30. It is unfortunate, but in case they decide to do another print run of those publications, they need to retain all their copyrighted rights and privileges without potential future sales being "stolen" by people making the work agvailable for free via illigal copies and scans online.

And back to the theme of htis thread - IF I find some time to sew this month, I have one Goth girl in my BJD family, but she's a 14 year old child in a Victorian family, so her style is somewhat niche. I have a box of fabrics and trim earmarked for her so it's literally a case of deciding on a Victorian style to make for her and starting.

This is Phige (short for Ephigenia) in thee previous goth outfitI made her (from a couple of old button down shirts) She's an RML R20J head on an old CustomHouse Ai body.

    31. @Teddy your doll is so pretty, love the dress on her. I use clothes as well because theres a place by me that has tons, I find that a lot of it is unique, new, and only sold for pennies by the pound. I also have a lot of regular material, my mother was a sewer and bought me a lot when I got into doll sewing.

    32. I have to stop myself from snapping up every men's cotton shirt I see in a charity shop that I like the pattern/colour of. I already have two large stacking crates full of shiorts that haven't been unpicked or cut into yet as well as another crate of unpicked ones ready to use., in addition to all the rest fo the fabric in the house that's suitable for doll sewing (as opposed to the entire room of humnan-sized costume fabrics), and I hardly ever get aorund to sewing any more.

    33. @Teddy but it was fun finding when you were shopping, was for me ;). I join these themes to brush up my sewing skills since I lack them lol but I have fun. I have been were you are now and sewIng hardly at all.

    34. Well, I somehow managed to time this “extra project” perfectly while awaiting the arrival of the supplies I ordered specially for this month’s round. I just finished this, and my fabrics are due to be delivered in this afternoon’s post. Let’s hear it for serendipity!:dance

I used the leftover yellow gingham from last month's project, but with white lace this time.

And here’s the skirt…made from the cutest care bear fabric ever (even in the right scale…amazing!)

    35. That outfit is so cute! Love the lace embellishments!

    36. No way! I just came here to post the same thing. I'm not making the human sized version, and it sounds like my materials will be very different so I think it'll be cool to see how they both turn out. I'm actually cheating a bit here since I cut the fabric maybe a year ago and it's been sitting since. I've been lazy in figuring out how to add the white print to black velvet, without buying a bunch of screen printing supplies. I'm really excited to see how yours turns out! Having a matching dress that you personally made sounds fantastic.

Doll: Macha is still upset with me for buying her jeans that don't fit  (They were labeled girls but they must be boys- They are huge!) so I figured she deserves a new outfit this time around. She isn't really a jeans girl anyway. She likes to be flashy.

Inspiration: Well my inspiration is actually the pattern itself, I am making a different color way of the dress it was modeled after. The pattern is for crown trump by angelic pretty. It features a doll and human sized pattern, but I will only be making the doll one.

Pattern: Gothic and lolita bible 22. I'll be using the angelic pretty petticoat, dress, collar, detachable sleeve and head dress patterns.

Challenges: I was actually able to find a replica of the original custom angelic pretty lace used on the dress hem which was nice, but I'm not sure the large (human scale) lace will look nice, so I may need a backup plan. I'm also not entirely sure how I will adhere the crown trump print to black velvet. I've went ahead and traced the print in a computer program tonight so I do have a clean copy of it. I then tried cutting the shapes out of iron on vinyl with my Cricut, but the shapes are too small- which means it's also too small to make a stencil of. Worst case, I might print it on cotton, but I do want to stick to the original velvet if possible. Velvet prints are an iconic feature of old school lolita.

    39. Here are my supplies for my girl’s upcoming outfit…done in the same country girl Lolita style of poofy blouse and matching layered skirt of course. And there’s plenty of white lace for the ruffles as in her last outfit. My cat, Mr Meowgi, is helping naturally.:)

    40. if the lace does end up being too big to add to the dress you could use it on a petticoat that peeks out just a little so you can see the original lace was used and is part of the petti layer instead of the dress

    41. a day late oops but I'm going to make a visual kei punk outfit for my sd13 boy, I've already got a pair of shoes made up but I'm struggling with what to do for the rest of the outfit, tentatively ill be doing a tshirt and shorts as base items, since i somehow forgot to post pictures T^T ill add a link to my inspiration board for now https://pin.it/2sZthq2oj

    42. I wonder how they did it for the example they made? I've spent so much time squinting at the tiny photos on the instruction page, trying to figure out the tiny details. Maybe you could try simplifying the designs if they're too complex at this scale? IIRC, AP said they stopped doing screenprints on velvet because it's hard to produce economically with their standards for quality control.

    43. @PoeticSoul the outfit is so adorable and the bear material is the cutest ever! It’s one of my favorite sets you’ve made! I absolutely love the colors altogether, well done! ❤️

oh wow thats so cool, the colors in your next sewing project are so opposite, I’m looking forward to seeing it! ;)

    44. I've been out of town for the last week, but I did go ahead and order a lot of the supplies for Cloud's hoodie. Unfortunately, they won't be here until the second half of the month at the earliest, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to finish it on time.

For the jeans, I'm probably going to use the facing/lining pieces of Missy's Imagining's Armadillo Pants pattern as a starting point. My plan is to make a muslin first and see what tweaks it needs for a better fit. I have vague plans of using some of the layering pieces in faux leather to make armored jeans, so this way I'll have a base for that as well.

    45. Nice to see everyone's projects underway, or for some speedsters, finished!

I've cut out my mockup pieces and the other person who made this a while back on DoA wasn't lying: it's going to run big. This "jacket" is definitely a coat – I'm glad I decided to do a mockup before the actual thing

@Teddy I made socks from scratch, and they only barely went over his heel, but they fit pretty good that way so I decided to make them shoes by decoupaging them LoL.

I absolutely hate dealing with shoes that eventually fall apart although they cost $$$…or never fit right in the first place. Since my crew is all based in a fantasy universe anyway, I usually just leave most of them barefoot out of pure exasperation. But this is something wonderful I’m definitely planning to try, with high hopes! Thank you so much for this idea…I love it!:thumbup

    53. @PoeticSoul thank you very much on all the sweet feedback, I appreciate it. I used saran wrap on the feet, it was a little hard to get them off once dry but since they were low in the back I was able to. I’d recommend a slit in the back or extra material folded over to get them off easier. ;)

@Teddy thank you so much! :) I’m thinking of gluing leather on the bottom and straps to look like sandels with socks :XD:

    54. Sounds good. Maybe try with double-sided tape top start - to see if youy like the effect before you commit to gluing it...?

    55. Oooh, loving everyone's work so far! I know I haven't been chiming in but it's been great watching everyone's progress.

I was busy over the weekend before so didn't get much sewing time, but found an approximately doll skirt-sized scrap of pink fabric and decided to throw together an outfit using RAD Doll Clothes' 10th anniversary pattern. Originally I wanted solid black, but all my solid black is spoken for somehow. So, roses instead!

She does need a shirt or something to go under it... Though Chandra behind her might also want for some leggings, and Violet next to her is a newcomer which generally means new clothes but I already have a bunch of purple stuff that fits her, but on the other hand I love purple so I also have plenty of fabric to use! Many options.

    56. @PoeticSoul I was so excited that you liked the sock shoes I failed to mention that I am looking forward to see what shoes you make! I have a few different ideas now that I know that the glue works on the material so well. Here a picture of the type of glue I used.

    57. @JaxxCapta I love the fabrics you used! With your girl’s edgy look, these roses on black create a wonderful juxtaposition that adds so much character to her…like she’s feminine and pretty, but look out because she definitely has a darker edge. Outfits that add dimension to a doll’s character are always a win-win.:)

@mydaffer Perfect! I actually have a bottle of Mod Podge sitting around in my supplies drawer (and what a plus that I actually remember where it is.) I’m already deep into my project for this round, but I’m really looking forward to trying this one in the near future.

    58. Well, the roses and the pink do go togehter quite nicely, so that's a win.

    59. I'm jumping in late and I don't know if I will be able to finish in time, but I'll give it a try.

My model for this round is Daisy, a Lati Blue Cara head on a Luts Kid Delf body.

I'll make her another Lolita dress. She is very much into the OTT Sweet thing and I have this heart print fabric that I think will work well. I've also picked out some laces and buttons that i think I'll use.

I finished the jeans. It doesn't really show up in the photo, but I used a variegated black fabric as opposed to a solid one, to create a little more visual contrast. The main changes I made from the original pattern were adding length and narrowing the pant leg so I could tuck them into his boots.

The sleeveless hoodie (inspiration) is still in the drafting stage. I'm using the MSD Basic Tunic pattern from Lomi's Playground as a basis, since it has the right kind of neck opening, and I already know it fits Cloud. However, I'm not sure whether I want to alter the shoulder seams to add the pleather portions, or if I should just sew the entire hoodie out of the base material and then sew the pleather on top. Plus, I want to simplify the arm holes... I think I need to experiment with some test versions.
