Wearables Sewing Project: Seasonal [ Round 117 ]

Dec 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

This month’s theme is Seasonal, which can mean many things. General styles suited to one of the classic 4 seasons (spring, summer, fall or winter) are of course a welcome possibility. But also are special outfits for the various holidays throughout the year (like Christmas or Halloween, etc.) If you can find a bit of time during this busy part of the year to sew something special for your crew, please come join us for some seasonal fun!;)

      Week 1: 12/1-12/ 7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 12/8 to 12/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 12/16 to the end of December
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 118 ] Fairytale
      [ Round 119 ] Leftovers and Recycling
      [ Round 120 ] Vintage and Retro
      [ Round 121 ] Monochrome
      [ Round 122 ] Theatre/Masquerade

    2. I'm really hoping to join in this time - if I do I hope to finally finish my set of ten SD sized Victorian bathing costumes

So, it will be for a Summer Season (I'll pretend I'm in New Zealand or Peru while I work on them).

Here's a reminder picture from the previous ntime I was working on them:
This is the closest to finished other than the black one (which got made several years previously)

    3. I really should join and try to get a step closer to my old goal of making sure all my dolls own some proper outerwear. I haven't been very productive lately, though, so I don't know if I should just sit this one out and gather strength for next round.

@Teddy Yay, they're back. I will cheer you on for here, I'd love to see those finished. It's such a fun project.

    4. Teddy, I'm looking forward to more swimwear progress!

Once I get my current last minute Christmas presents finished I have plans for a rococo suit for Josiah percolating. Norah Waugh's "The Cut of Men's Clothes" is waiting for me at the library as of today & the fabrics & trims are all chosen. Perhaps I could pretend he's preparing for a holiday ball & squeak by on the seasonal aspect?
But first I'd best finish up the non doll sewing that's on my work table...

    5. I'm joining after a long hiatus. I have two new boys that need clothes. They will probably be getting winter stuff since it's cold outside.

      • x 1
    6. I'm ABSOLUTELY doing this one, mostly because I've already started. My goal is to make a set of matching outfits for my little fambly for Christmas, and if I have time/inspiration/supplies, some more cold-weather stuff for them too. I already have Aurelie and Mina's:

So what I still have left to do is make a matching look for Des (and a kerchief for their dog/wolf, Shadow.) I'm going to make him a button-up shirt, likely in the print, and a tie out of the solid green. Possibly a solid green vest/waistcoat? He already has black trousers, and I think green would be overwhelming, but we'll see. I also recently got some cream faux rabbit fur with the intention of making some fluffy winter accessories for at least Aurelie...

    7. Here's the fabric & trims...

      Here's the idea...

And here's the victim/willing volunteer. Josiah is a Johnny Dep head on a Unidoll body. I was only going to work on a waistcoat & coat for him until I got to messing with him & was reminded how skin tight the Volks knee britches he's wearing are on him. So britches as well once the other two are finished.

    8. Can't wait to see all your amazing works !
As always, will try to join if I can...

    9. After taking last month off from sewing, I’m now rested and ready to join in! I’m going for a Spring look with my shironuri girl, Poetta (Volks SD Megu.) I’ll be making her yet another story robe for her collection, using piecing and “slow stitching” techniques done by hand. Working slowly and meticulously by hand will force me to slow down during this busy holiday season, which sounds like a perfectly peaceful and delightful respite from the usual hustle and bustle.;) My theme is based on Poetta’s storypoem, “The Old Woman’s Flower Garden”.

And here are the fabrics I have on hand to work with.:)

    10. Oh wow! Can't wait to see the finish product!

So colorful. Love it already :D

    11. @cthulhu That's going to be great.

@PoeticSoul The other outfits you've done in this style have turned out amazing, so I can't wait to see what you will do for this one. It's going to be beautiful.

    12. I'd like to see them finished too...

Nice - the fabrics look scrumptious.

      Yay!

Off to a good start with the two already fdone then - good luck with the shirt and whatever to go with it.

      Fingers crossed!

Excellent! You combine lovely fabrics to such a pretty effect, so I always look forward to seeing what you come up with for this girl.

      Teddy

    13. @Teddy , best of luck with making progress on the bathing costumes project, the most-finished one looks great, I wonder what colors you choose - 10 costumes can cover the whole rainbow and then some.
@SteamWitch Yay, winter clothes for everyone!
@Idoru , I love the colors and patterns in the finished garments, all Christmas-y but at the same time restrained in a good way, looking forward to a male version.
@cthulhu Oooh! The colors and textures are so rich, and perfect for that design.
@PoeticSoul So colorful! Looking forward to this spring story in the middle of winter.

I'd like to join and continue working on the winter outfit for Anwen (FairyLand MiniFee Chloe) - add warm layers on top of the dress I sewed in November.
I've already started on a sleeveless jacket in dark red wool:
[IMG]Red sleeveless - progress 1 by helgie, on Flickr
The fabric is thick and behaves almost like felt, should be good for embroidery :evilplot:
I also plan to make another sleeveless jacket and a cloak or cape, not sure about design yet, but here's Anwen draped in the chosen materials:
[IMG]Red-blue-black winter outfit - materials by helgie, on Flickr
The blue velvet is synthetic, the dark red (or whatever this color is. burgundy?) is some wool-synthetic blend. Both are stretchy, which is not actually helpful. I also dug up some blue and red silky lining fabrics and should look through my collection of fur scraps for decoration options.

    14. I have been busy these last two months selling from my off-topic doll collection to pay for my Granado Neptune who is on lay-away. My sewing stuff is put away for awhile, but when he gets here, I'll be so eager to sew for the big beast! Looks like some wonderful projects this month! I'll be watching with 'heart fingers!' Good luck everyone!

    15. Sera - Orange
      Phige - Black
      Edith - Red
      Elfie - Yellow
      Cressida - Light Blue
      Hannah - Dark Blue
      Nettle - Lilac
      Maudie - Teal
      Meri - Beige
Nesta - Green (too light a shade for her, really, but I've already cut it out and part sewn it so don't want to waste it. I had the same issue with gingham dress project and ended up restarting Nesta's dress when I found a darker green gingham)

Nice - any plan yet for what sort of embrodery you'll add?

      Sounds sumptuous.

I hope you don't have too long a wait for him.

    16. Hi everyone! Hope you guys are well. Since I don't have a sewing machine with me now, I will try to experiment with knitting for my Amoria! I don't know if I will success but I will do my best. Wish me big luck!

    17. Victorian bathing suits! That is amazing. I love these! I hope you can do it!

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

What you've done so far is adorable! :aheartbea

I cannot wait to see what you do. I adore this style - such gorgeous clothing!

This is going to be lovely. I admire your desire to do a more slow paced project. I tend to border of maniacal when I am rushing from project to project. Slowing down takes a concentrated effort! I look forward to seeing your progress!

That's lovely fabric. It's going to look beautiful on your doll!

Good luck getting him paid off! How exciting!

I'm excited to see your knitting project! I'd love to be inspired to dig out the knitting needles again!

I really want to join this project. Being as I love the holidays so much, I do have a few Christmas themed dolls (most of my dolls live in Halloweentown) I would love to make them outfits, especially since I just got my 2 boys boots! I'll add concept sketches as soon as I can. I'd love to do more than 2, but, lol, I gotta know my limits!

      • x 1
    18. Fingers crossed for that!

      Teddy

    19. Okay I did get at least this far. I have the material and patterns and my subjects for this run.

I want to make pants and hoodies for these two and maybe my new Doll Chateau kid body. If I'm really ambitious I'll make a kilt for the rabbit. :thumbup

    21. I can't get over how cute it is these are matching. I also adore the bible sleeves on the bigger girl

      • x 2
    22. "Bible sleeves"...? Oooh! A chance to learn a new term. I've never heard of those - what defines a bible sleeve?

      Teddy

    23. I have projects to work on so I may jump in during my vacay, the last week of December. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s seasonal makings.

    24. My first step towards doing any sort of sewing would be to find Bob, the doll dress form. I cannot find Bob.

    25. Use the doll.

      Teddy

    26. I think "bible sleeve" might be a term for a bishop sleeve? Either way--thank you @foulmonster! Now that I have the little family, giving them tacky matching outfits is giving me a new reason for living. I've made them a lot of coordinating outfits lately... Holidays are the perfect excuse for it.

      • x 1
    27. oh my bad, I think I just typed Bible when I meant bishop! but yeah, they're definitely adorable. I think coordinating is a fun way to stretch creativity in tighter parameters

      • x 1
    28. Sometimes auto-correct doesn't recognise sewing terms, silly auto-correct. Same with doll terms and any specialized field with specific equipment or terms. Can be very frustrating. I have an Uncle whose name is D**k and I cannot get my phone or computer to address him by his given name, lol.

    29. true! it can be very annoying since I don't always notice it immediately

oh noo, that must be very annoying lol

    30. I have had to train my auto correct with a whip! ;)

    31. Bishop sleeves - that makes sense - Sorry I should have made the connection myself.

      Teddy

    32. Minor progress here. The requested library books came in. More gorgeous photos of paintings for inspiration in "The Art of Dress" by Ribeiro. And historical patterns to resize in Norah Waugh's book.
But now I'm hoping to replace our printer soon which will then let me print enlarged versions of said patterns.
Meanwhile I've undressed the poor fellow & cleaned off his feet where his black boots had been on too long. Took some measurements. And dug out an Adams-Harris suit pattern which may be useful for a sizing guide especially since it was designed for the Unidoll body!

Hopefully the poor fellow lying on my work table, wrapped in a towel, will inspire me to at least make him a pair of breeches soon...

    33. We have a shirt! Amazing how motivating a doll meet I nearly forgot about can be...

    34. Well done!

I always think I do my best work at the last minute - I nee dthat panic-fed adrenaline-rush.

    35. Bravo Idoru! At least you remembered before the meetup...instead of after. ;}

    36. Any idea of the timescale on that?

      Teddy

    37. @Idoru Well done indeed!:) Such a wonderful holiday shirt!

    38. "Timescale"? Afraid I'm not clear on what you're asking.
      1760s for the suit.
The new printer has been purchased & sits here in it's box. I figured out the control board menu enough to confirm I could make 120% or other niggly between # percentages before we purchased. Next step is getting it set up here.

    39. I meant on getting and setting up the printer, but it seems you're already moving ahead there.

      Teddy

    40. Replacing the printer has been a year long discussion. Hoped to buy one quickly last week but then reading reviews just jellied my brain... Turns out to be a matter of choosing the most likely useful, still affordable, and which bothersome design flaws you're willing to put up with. But getting one sooner rather than later became a goal when I decided to make this Rococo suit. ;D

    41. I have that problem with every piece of tech I need to buy/replace. I'm glad you've been able to get past that to choose one.

      Teddy

    42. Lets hope we see the breeches soon...

    43. Goes nicely with those pants

    44. I decided I will join in. Things have been a bit hectic here for a while, but it seemes to be clearing up now.
I don't have a detailed plan yet, but here is my model for this round.
Meet Lilja, She is a Lati blue Shaina.
I won't make a full outfit, but with the goal in mind that she will have something to wear outdoors when it's cold all she really needs is a jacket and maybe a scarf, since she allready have mittens and a warm hat and plenty of warm socks and other things like that in her warderobe.

I'm not sure about the design yet, I will have to go through the patterns I have for her allready and see if there are any short cuts I can take from them to make up for lost time. Finished is going to have to be better than perfect, this round.

      • x 7
    45. Good luck finding a pattern you can use or adapt

      Teddy

    46. Thank you. I am considering using the upper part of the coat pattern I made for Daisy in an earlier round and make it into a short jacket. Their measurements are close enough that it should work.

    47. That's convenient - Yay!

      Teddy

    48. Nice! It's always such a satifying feeling to put that first garment that is really theirs on a doll, isn't it? He looks great in his new pants.

    50. Yes, I've been out of the mood to sew for a while so it was great getting back into it. I felt so bad that he was sitting around with a bare behind. :frownyblush:
Thank Teddy, you are a great motivator. ;)

So to not double post I finished the hoodie. Looks good, but what will it look like on a doll??????

Cupcake got another outfit. I made the pattern when I had a DC Colin but with this fabric it looks great on clown Cupcake.

The sleeves are separate from the body suit. He will still look great in it even if he loses the clown makeup.

    54. @SteamWitch So wonderful! I love your use of unusual fabric patterns. They give your outfits such a textural and unique look.:)

      • x 1
    55. I have the materials together and I am working on adapting the pattern for the fabrics and the different doll. It's way slower going that it should, but as long as I am making some progress, I'll get there eventually.

I am still chosing between the white ande purple buttons.

      • x 3
    56. You could use both, and alternate them as you sew them on - white, purple, white, purple...

      Teddy

    57. That's one option.

    58. Thank you! I went through my stash and only kept the ones that I really liked.
Thank you! The fabric is very good to work with despite being lumpy and stretchy.
Thank you! Thrift and resale shops are my only option for fabric gathering. Living so far from fabric shops makes it my only choice; luckily people donate some really cool old stuff.

    59. I have cut all the pieces and I have decided on the purple buttons. So now I "only" have to put it all together.
