Wearables Sewing Project: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 144 ]

Mar 1, 2025

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

There’s a bit of the galactic wanderer in all of us…or a tendency to dream of hanging out in an enchanted forest…or a desire to portray a favorite and beloved fictional character, even if only for a day. This is your chance to indulge in such flights of fancy through our dolls, and to expand their wardrobes in a fun and imaginative way.

      Week 1: 3/1-3/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 3/8 to 3/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 3/16 to the end of March
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 145 ] Basics
      [ Round 146 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings

    2. Oh what a lovely month ! ^^ I can't wait to see all the projects. =) I'm still ill myself so don't think I will be able to sew anything again. v_v

    3. I'd like to join and go for a fantasy outfit. I keep coming back to the idea of a "princess dress" for my girls, with varying results. It's Amadis' turn :celebrate. She is not a princess, but she is an elf, and the vague backstory I have for her includes her being a younger (and somewhat estranged) daughter of a noble family. So it is possible that she'd need to dress up and show at a fairy court. The design I have in mind is inspired by late Renaissance and Tudor gowns and includes:
      - shift, made of very thin and translucent violet silk, already in progress;
      - petticoat;
      - underskirt;
      - skirt with split in front, so that underskirt is visible;
      - corsage;
      - coat with Tudor-style trumpet sleeves.
Here's Amadis (Thel by Bardo Research) with fabrics:

    4. I'm thinking urban vampire street fantasy, I hope that's a thing. I want some of the clothing to look a bit ethereal, maybe a touch gothic, I am thinking Vampire the Masquerade type stuff, if anyone knows what I am talking about. Something a modern vampire would wear. (although only one of them is a vampire in my story) I wanted to make stuff for all four of them because I am tired of them looking dressed up and 'normal'.

I am using a pattern I made previously for their pants. I am going to freelance the shirts by modifying shirt patterns I made previously, but different for each one. Four of them need clothes, so I want to do four outfits. Also, I'm bored and in need of a project.

The four boys are Raven (Ringdoll MoYu) Lucifer (Ringdoll Lucifer) Skip the girl doll in middle, she just holding material, she can wait until a different project. Asher (Doll Leaves Asa) and Trinity (Resinsoul Dong)

The materials I am going to be using are cotton knit blends and a lot of lace. I forgot to put the lace in the picture. I may not use all the material that I piled on top of them, but I will use a lot of it.

Here is a picture of the boys holding some of the stuff that I plan on using.

    5. Excited to see this month's creations!!

I love this kind of theme but I haven't got anything in mind for myself, so I'll be watching from the sidelines.

    6. I just got some new fabric, and it's one of my fav themes, but not sure if I have the mental energy to commit to a sewing project right now. So will see if any sewing gets done by me, and I will cheer everyone on.

    7. I'll be joining in this month!
Noel, my Volks SDM-F-06, is from a sci fi setting and desperately in need of clothes.
Her clothes aren't anything particularly flashy (long story short, she's kidnapped, and takes some old clothes from a secondhand clothing bale onboard a ship) but I'm going to use her outfit as a chance to start using my new birthday/Christmas present overlocker.
I plan on making her a pair of shorts and a turtleneck shirt, using patterns from Volks's Dressmaking for Super Dollfie books as a starting point (Volume 1 has an MSD turtleneck, Volume 3 has stretch fabric shorts as part of a witch/wizard costume).
She's wearing Test Version 2 of the shorts in this photo:

    8. I've finally got her a body, so my little girlie needs proper clothes! I'm debating on what exactly to make her, so we're going to start with a tunic, then maybe some leggings. I'll be feeling it out as I go!

    9. Your cat is so beautiful!!! And they match so well!!!!

    10. I recently received a pair of Asleep Eidolon mature tinies.
My plan for them is to style them in a vaguely historical style inspired by 1850-ish, give or take a century and adjust for creative liberties.
The point is that since there is not going to be any attempt made at historical accuracy, that falls well into the fantasy theme, right?

Say hello to Konstantin (AE male Cordelia) and Ting (AE Kiir).
As you can see, they are far from finished. Wigs, eyes and even face up is kind of place holders. Ting's clothes are all I've had time to make for them so far, the rest is random stuff pulled from the stash just to keep them from being completely bald and naked.

So, because there is so much to make for them -far more than I could ever make within a month- I won't make a detailed plan. I'll just make whatever I feel like and what I have time for and we'll just have to see how much I can get done.

I hope it’s ok that I join these amazing themes even though nothing I do turns out like I envision but I have so much fun trying anyway.

My sweet Uda is going to be the next doll I sew for, sadly she will be Cinderella in the lower form. I found a nice photo of a Cinderella I’d like to give it a go at.
Unfortunately, I have a multitude of material and may add or delete some and need to get started first to figure out what will all work together. I will show the materials as I get started. I don’t think I’ll be able to get the bottom the same but I’ll try LoL.

I’m sewing for the oldest type Volks body that is a bit larger, this way it will fit the standard body as well.

    12. Posting so I'll get notifications - Once again, I'll be following everyone's projects with interest but (probably) not actually joining in myself.

    13. I wanted to mention I had too look up if Cinderella was fantasy because I wasn’t sure what to make regarding the themes this round. Here is what I found on duck assist:

Cinderella is considered a fantasy because it includes magical elements, such as a fairy godmother and enchanted transformations, which are typical of fairy tales. The story revolves around themes of hope, transformation, and the triumph of good over evil, all common in fantasy narratives.

    14. As far as I can see, ALL fairy tales count as fantasy.

Also (as with all the theme for any round) the emphasis has always been on your own personal interpretation of the theme.

      Teddy

      • x 3
    15. @mydaffer Yes no need to worry about that. ^^ Themes are very broad so you can go with Cinderella for it. =) And it's not only Fantasy here, it's cosplay too. ;)

      • x 1
    16. Thank you! ❤️ I just felt a bit odd posting fairytale so I wanted to make sure I was in line with the theme. Cinderella does seem a bit out of place too me and I wondered if anyone else felt the same way.

Thank you! ❤️ I’m so glad it fits because I know nothing about cosplay, I’m definitely behind times, I’m stuck in the 70’s. LoL

    17. I hope it's alright if we join with things we've already started! I'd love to get the outfit done for my dnd character, Vanora!
I'm working on the outfit on the left, below, which is her usual outift, and already have the patterns drafted, her pants started, and have been working on testing the pattern for her top. If I finish them, maybe i'll get a start on her formal outfit on the right! (I need to redesign her winter outfit in the middle)

    18. Here are the materials I plan on working with, the top one for the base. the rest are for the head wear, shawl, patches, blouse because the dress looks more like a blouse with skirt and possibly pantaloons underneath.

    19. It's basically picking a character, and putting together a costume of that character. I predate the advent of the term and still maintian that we already called it costuming and we don't need a new term for it, but coplay seems to have beocme the preferred term for the majority.

      Wrap around trousers - nice!

I made myself a couple of pairs of them last year to go with a pirate shirt I made in a multi coloured "galaxy" print cotton I couldn't resist buying.

    20. I made a bodice for Ting:

Front closing things in this scale is hard! *_*
A real bodice like this would close with hooks and eyes. Usually quite small ones.
I ended up making a hook and eye bar out of wire (like a simplified modern corset busk) because that way I could use a thicker wire than I could have if I tried individual hooks end eyes and it was easier to handle this way. Unfortunately I only had black wire on hand (read: I was to lazy to go down into the basement and look through the real wire stash and made do with what happened to be lying around on my desk) and it does show a little bit.
And, of course, it shows up even more on a photo, because it enlarges the whole thing so much.
I may make a second attempt later, but for now at least she is decent. The bodice really should have some ribbon trim as well, but I don't have anything thin enough in my stash. On a future one I may fake it with embroidery.

I love this scale for the ease storage, the small amounts of materials needed to make anything and the abundance of accessories and props available, but oh is it unforgiving!

At least, when I get to Konstantin's waistcoat, I can use buttons.

    22. That turned out very nice looks very well made and your doll is adorable and it looks very fitting on her. ❤️

    23. I’m very impressed at the precision you’ve managed with such a small size. It’s very well fitted, and even if the fasteners are a bit oversized, they work! That’s a big plus.:)

    24. @Teddy @mydaffer and @PoeticSoul Thank you all so much.
I think the next garment will be either a shirt for Konstantin or and apron for Ting, but they both need so many things, we'll see what actually gets made. :)

    25. Hope I'm not too late to join i only just spotted this today

This is a Leekeworld Bonnie (excuse the bad photo, its late and shes temporarily propped on my shelf as she also needs a restring)

I'm going to try and make her a goblin/fae inspired outfir, leaning towards a dress and bloomers based on a mushroom I think, exactly which one may depend on what I can get over the next week

      • x 15
    26. Am I kinda late to the party for the first week? Yes. But I made headway on what I'm doing for this one.

[IMG]polarisstanding by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr

As soon as I saw this thread hit on the 1st, I knew I should use this as a nudge to get to work on a robot-themed hoodie I'd already been playing with the idea for. As I was already leaning to making her spacey clothes, I decided she needed a good pair of galaxy-colored shorts to go with a new hoodie, and I whipped them up this week. I experimented with using bias tape on the back where it closes up and it's kind of clunky, so I may seam rip and fix that up, but overall I'm very pleased. These are the most detailed pants I've tried yet.

As for the main part of this project, here's the concept rough I did months ago when the idea first came to mind:

[IMG]hoodierough by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr

It's extremely rough, but you can kinda see how I started playing with doing paneling and finials for the hood. My plan is to use the fleece I have on hand, mostly the black, grey, and purple stuff. Depending on how much yellow I find, this may end up being a full cosplay hoodie for Skywarp from Transformers. Pattern wise: not sure still. May just wing it using RequiemArts' basic shirt design, sized up, with the hood from her hooded cape pattern.

    27. I love the fabric you used for those shorts! The hoody sounds like an exciting project if your sketch is anything to go by. Welcome aboard!:)

    28. This week has been 4 layers of skirt:
[IMG]Princess dress - shift and petticoat by helgie, on Flickr
[IMG]Princess dress - underskirt and skirt by helgie, on Flickr
      Some progress pics:
[IMG]Princess dress - progress 1 by helgie, on Flickr
Bottom right is the corset that I'm working on now - the cotton inner layers. I needed to do all the skirts first to figure out the situation around the waist.
First layer is a silk shift, sewn fully by hand. The neckline is on a drawstring (2 mm silk ribbon) and can open wide to go under the corset. The bottoms of the sleeves have elastic thread inside.
Then there's the gray cotton petticoat. The fabric came from trimmimg a bedsheet to size, with a pre-sewn edge that I used for the hem. The rest sewn by hand. I was first thinking of making hoops to support the skirt, but this layer works as well.
Underskirt is hand sewn out of patterned gray silk. The front is pleated, the back is on a drawstring; that adds quiet a lot of volume at the waist. The hem is unfinished, and I'm not happy with the color combination with the over-skirt, so I may sew another underskirt later.
Violet skirt is made of silk taffeta, mostly with a sewing machine. The edges are closed with 2,5 cm wide synthetic ribbon. It has (2 mm wide silk ribbon) ties in the front. The waist is made of thinner silk lining material. I have one piece of the taffeta, about 11x140 cm, so while it should be enough for visible parts of the costume, I will use other materials for lining and parts that will not be showing.
The waistbands of the 3 skirts are situated one above the other, with the petticoat riding low on the hips and the skirt at the waistline.

    29. I love the material! It looks very nice on her!!

This is coming along really nicely!

      • x 1
    30. Sounds like fun project!

      I love layers.
The greatest thing about this kind of outfit and actually make the layers separate is that the day you find a fabric you like better for the underskirt, you can just replace it.

      Thank you!
So far, all the visible parts are cotton, mostly because it's easy to work with, even in small scale.
The bodice is a scrap of printed cotton I got from a friend years ago and I am happy to find a use for it. I always feel guilty when people give me materials and it ends up just filling up the stash.

    32. This looks so nice! If you hadn't mentioned the black wire, I wouldn't have noticed it!
      That hoodie looks like fun!
      This looks really pretty!

    33. what a cute doll, the outfit sounds fun and what a great idea for her, looking forward to seeing the progress!

What a unique doll to sew for! All sounds good, can’t wait to see. Love what you’ve sewn already, awesome drawing!

    35. Hmm, well my mock up for Vanora's top doesn't work, so I need to draft a new one. I tested out the variegated thread i was thinking of using for decorative embroidery along the hem of her pants, but the fabric is pretty lightweight, so I think I need to figure out the best way to stabilize it first, and see if i can get the decorative stitch to go around curves nicely. In the sketch the bottom hem is straight across, but when I made the pattern, i rounded the edge, which makes it a little tricky.

    36. Yikes, I couldn’t resist the urge to work on this all day and try it on my Uda. Although I have to finish the sleeves, bandana, and the shawl, plus I have some cross stitching I’d like to do as well as buttons down the front of the blouse, I was so excited it fit and even the blouse fit front and back and I’m impressed to say the least. I hope you like it so far. :)

    37. I love this! The patches on the torn skirt are great. This is awesome!

      • x 1
    38. Wonderful! (Applause, applause!):D The entire outfit looks great of course, but this tattered skirt is a true tour de force! It looks exactly how you presented it in your initial design, and anyone seeing this outfit on your girl would instantly recognize it as “Cinderella”. A random tattered look is not always easy to pull off but you did it beautifully.

    39. Thank you so much, I appreciate your feedback! ❤️

Wow that made me feel so good to read your feedback! I really appreciate it very much! I already finished the blouse this morning, it’s so hard to stop once something starts coming together. My husband suggested making her a pail and mop and since I may finish the outfit today, I have time for accessories. :XD:

    41. @morganatron My prettiest cat! Her name is Ms. Harvey Dent, after the Batman villain.

Everyone's clothes are so great, I'm giggling at my own struggles.

I thought the minifee sized pattern I had would work, but it was too small in the waist and it's too short. I fixed the waist by adding a different color panel, but now I'm torn on sleeves vs no sleeves. I also might keep it shorter to show her tummy a bit. Crop tops are in right now. Or maybe some sort of lace/mesh add on...

    42. I like the material and design, always love adding in extra material when something doesn’t quite fit, I think it adds unique character to the garment. This looks really nice so far and I like the colors. Sleeves or not, I think it will be pretty either way! ❤️

    45. OK found a simple dress pattern by Fire Tuna Club to use as a starting point for the dress bodice and a panty hose pattern by Kitty Wild, I can draft some bloomers myself if I go that route

Thank you, I am being a bit optimistic about my skills I think, haven't sewed anything for a couple years now! but won't get better if I don't try

Ordered some fabrics and tiny hooks at the weekend, still need to source some beads and tiny snap, in might make the dress using fabrics I have now to figure out the closure and see how it is to get off and on over her big hips

    46. Oh wow, absolutely incredible projects all around, y'all! So many colors, designs, and gorgeous fabrics. It's a treat to read through this thread.

@vulpes How small are you thinking with the snaps? I got a big pack of 4/0 snaps from KO Snaps on Amazon forever ago, they've been great. (I can't recommend throwing more money at Bezos, but you can probably find the pack elsewhere.)

      • x 4
    47. I've spotted some 4mm ones on etsy, fingers crossed they come in time, if not I can usually get 6mm ones locally (I think thats 4/0?) they were just out of stock online when I ordered :)

    48. For closures I have tiny velcro dots, they make sewing easy LoL, they are stick on and stay well, I love different closures but those dots are a game changer!

They come in different sizes as well, I’ve even used them for the wigs on tiny dolls to stay put!

Love your outfit ideas for your doll, how adorable! ❤️

    52. I’m done, I’m skipping accessories and calling it! I did everything I originally wanted to do and I’m satisfied. I absolutely love the outfit, the skirt can be turned anyway to make it look different and I like that! I’ll be checking in on all the projects ongoing can’t wait t see them complete! Here’s front and back although it doesn’t look like I did much since the last skirt photo I did complete the back of the blouse, made the pantaloons, added clear buttons on the blouse, and I added brown elastic on the sleeves.

Sorry I wanted to add this last photo I had I thought it’d give a perspective of the way it can be the front if I was looking for a change. Also I wanted to mention i is two layers sewn together one on top of the other.

    56. @Thymeseer Nice save. It's always annoying when things don't fit as intended, but at least now you know what changes to make to the pattern for the next time you use it.

@vulpes Lovely plan! I'm looking forward to see what you make.

    57. Thank you Teddy, I’m really happy it turned out and sewing without a pattern makes it hard to stop once getting started and this was a fun theme for me.

Thank you, it was so much fun to make.

    58. I have a lot of inspiration after an excursion to NYC Dollcon, and so I'll be jumping in this round! I'm working on continuing a circle skirt and beret set I started at the sewing workshop, plus whatever I can wring out of the scraps really, based on some babydolls I had as a child. I'm decently far along now, I have wearable garments! I need to upload photos and return later but I wanted to check in and say I'm completely in love with everyone's projects this round too! So many beautiful pieces!!
