Wearables Sewing Project: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 109 ]

Apr 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

This is our round to explore flights of fancy…be it futuristic sci fi, or some wondrous fantasy world, or a beloved character from your favorite media. Just let your imagination run free, and give your doll a chance to step into another world beyond our own.:)

      Week1: 4/1-4/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 4/8 to 4/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 4/16 to the end of April
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 110 ] Basics
      [ Round 111 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings
      [ Round 112 ] Eveningwear/Haute Couture

    2. If I finish my current commitments with time to spare beofre this round ends, I'll jump in on this one.

      Teddy

    3. It's a great idea. I will try to jump on it if I have time to. =)

    4. I am going to try my best to take part this month. I always think about joining, but never do lol.
Fingers crossed I can finish before my brain gets distracted and wanders off again :XD:

    5. I have a doll outfit planned that would fit this theme perfectly! Will have to see how things go with life stuff and energy levels. Good luck and good wishes to everyone who participates : )

    6. Vhei-wen (Vay-when)'s wig came just in time for this round! I need to have some motivation to get working on making his Jedi robes, (I haven't made anything for well over a year. Oops), so this theme is the perfect motivation to do so. Anyways, let me get started.

      Vhei-wen gets his Jedi braid
      by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr

      1.) Vhei-wen, Doll Chateau Nicola-A
2,) Jedi robes similar to what Mace Windu wears, since he's Mace's Padawan (Samuel L. Jackson, on the left). I'm going for the robes he wore in Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
3.) I found a tutorial as to how to make them for humans, so I'm going to have to modify them for a 50cm doll. Also, wings. Oof.

Wish me luck, I think I'm really going to need it.

I'm going to start with the cream-colored inside robes, since I found fabric that will work for them.

    9. I want to do a fantasy thing this month, maybe... I've been sewing a lot lately, but nothing that ever seems to fit the theme!

since sewing for a frog seems to satisfy "fantasy" to me, I'll be reworking a dress for this one to become instead an apron, because he has just been painted and his bareback is too lovely to cover up...

I got part way on my shoes last month and lost the scrap of material I was using, but it is found again so I'll work on those again because they were sort of coming out all right...

this should be a very fun month to watch here....

    11. Oh cute!

Making your frog an apron to leave the back visible is a great idea.

    12. @dailymare Oooooh…I love the Pipos frogs!<3 Yours is super cute with that adorable faceup. And I’m loving the fabric and style you’re using on those shoes too!:thumbup

    13. I will try to find some time this month because it´s a cool theme round!
This time the lucky one will be Sakura, my intentions are to make another of her popular battle dresses.

    15. Can't wait to see all these cool projects ! :3nodding:

I think I will go with Pandore. It's time for her to have her proper Winter Fairy look !
She's a Rosette Fir with a Muse body.

So, I want to make a complete look of a Winter Fairy. I need to make another wig, maybe white or pale blue. Maybe bicolor lol. I started thinking of his outfit and I have some pictures to inspire me but I'm not set yet on a unique design. I want to put some jewels and pearls on the outfit. If I can, I will make wings which look like snowflakes. Also I started making horns with fimo several weeks ago, I need to continue them. I'm thinking about some other details but I'll make them if I have time for that. I don't know yet if I will make some shoes or not because I'm not very good at that. :sweat

I won't change the face-up even it's not white or pale blue because it's a very dear friend of mine who made this. She does not have her eyes on this picture but now she have beautiful shiny white eyes made by another friend. =)

I will post the design later when I will be satisfied with that. :)

    19. I am making my Gloomy doll Eris into Snow White.
First step is making a wig.
Then a nice medieval inspired dress in red, black or white or a combination thereof.
Hopefully I will have some nice pictures to make her profile in the end.

      • x 3
    20. Thanks! Also I order a new wig for her (more accurate to the manga hair color), so I am very exhited to make her new clothes. About the costume, I am between the Kitty outfit and the B&W dress from the second artbook.

    21. I have two dolls incoming (!!!!) that I'm crawling up the walls waiting for, and I've never owned anything their size in such curvy proportions before so I'm going to have to make sure they have something to wear when they get here in a few months! I'm thinking a gathered skirt or two at least, maybe a chemise or top? I might buy the SamsallyUnderOrange patterns that were just released recently, but for now I'm thinking keep it simple and just work from measurements. Luckily minifees are as popular as always, lol, so I've got plenty of references available. I ordered a Celine and a spare body to qualify for the event head to put on it!

[IMG]Coriana and Saraban by Jules B, on Flickr

My Celine is tentatively going to be named Coriana, a fantasy D&D-style character of mine, though we'll see how long that lasts (I will probably open her up and decide to do something totally different, but for the time being lol). My Sarang 22 I think I'll name Saraban, but I'm not super sure of her style or character yet, so fantasy basics (more or less) it is this round! My goal is to not buy ANY fabric for this, wish me luck!

    22. I have many dolls that could fit in this category, from the ones that are meant to be my characters from The Elder Scrolls to my fairy-tale inspired dolls...but since I haven't been doing amazing at finding time and energy to do much crafting for months now, I'm going to go with something that's nearly finished so I can hopefully complete it and feel like I accomplished something :XD:

I think last time I participated in a monthly sewing project round, I was working on a lilac colored dress with giant balloon sleeves? As it turns out, that dress was actually meant as a cosplay-- the concept was to make an outfit that would be like Lumpy Space Princess from the Adventure Time cartoon, but as a human. I have the dress nearly complete, but there are some accessories it needs to complete the "LSP costume" look.

so I guess I'll jump back in here and try to finish up the last couple of details on the dress and make the accessories this month!

    23. I would like to join. I would like to try to do 2 outfits for my minifee boys for a fantasy Dnd style setting.

Left: Naoki - Minifee Karsh Right: Felix - Minifee Nanuri17 Both are motion line body

I have made a pants and shorts patterns that fit them with some tweaks they could work here.

    25. I can't wait to see the new wig!

I have to admit, I love the kitty outfit. I'm not familiar with the B&W one from the art book, do you have a pic?

I've started working on Vhei-wen's inner tunic. I'm using a pattern I found on the Rebel Legions website. It is as close to an "official" Jedi tunic pattern as can be found. Luckily, the outer tunic is a modified version of the inner one, so the pattern I'm making should make the outer tunic easier to make. *crosses fingers* I still need to get fabric and thread for the outer tunic. I'm not sure if I'm going to make the pouches, or even the leather belt yet. I don't know how to work leather, so I may just find one and modify it.

Maybe one day I'll make a Jedi outfit for myself to cosplay in, if I can get a decent lightsaber, that is. ;)

Welcome to all the new people that have joined this round!:D

    26. Got started on an elastic waistband skirt! I love a quick and easy project like this, I'll probably make several of these and some sort of peasant top or bodice to go with it? Not sure yet.

[IMG]Elastic skirt! by Jules B, on Flickr
I got exactly 0.167 yards of this cute swirl cotton for 75 cents out of the remnants bin and I've got enough to make a couple little projects out of it without a whole lot of waste or leftovers, so pleased!

[IMG]Elastic skirt! by Jules B, on Flickr

Quick rolled hem and waist channel pinned in place! Plenty of room to hide the printed label on the inside to maximize real estate on the outside. It's a little lonely sewing for a model who hasn't even been made yet, lol, but I'm hoping that having some cute clothes for the 'Fees to wear will help make the waiting easier, lol!

    27. this reminds me of when i was sewing for my first BJD ever, who was a headless body for her first month or so with me :XD:
also, nice progress! hopefully I'll get moving on my project tomorrow...

    30. @Mamo I feel that! we can be doll-less together
lol :P I just started the doll waiting process..3 more months to go...
the skirt is definitely giving off cottage vibes!

I'm sticking to things I can work off of the measurements, probably for the next couple of rounds.
This round I'm hoping to work on a fancy shawl thing... I won't be able to do a full outfit because of other time commitments, but I'm hoping that's okay.

      • x 1
    31. @Maud of course, make whatever you like! I know everybody is always excited to see the different things that get made each round <3 Dolly wardrobes aren't built in a day, after all!

    32. [IMG]April sewing by mare joy smith, on Flickr

this is my favorite part of the month, daydreaming about the pattern and fabrics... I have decided that the flowery dress (Ruby Red creation) still distracts to much from the painting, so I'm going with plain green with the green pattern on the inside of pockets... here is the bum I want to show off..........

[IMG]April sewing by mare joy smith, on Flickr

      and the pattern...

    33. Oh, those darling little flowery bits. Yes it would be a shame to cover those decorated cheeks

I think either the plain green or the patterned green would work.

      Teddy

    34. @dailymare that's going to be so cute!! I can see why you want to show off that painting, it's so much fun!

I finished the quick skirt! I went ahead and did a rolled hem for the waist channel just because, I figured I'd regret it later as I always do when it starts to get lil fraysome flyaways, haha. It did mean it took three tries to get the elastic threaded through, since every small safety pin in the house seems to have gone on collective walkabout. But it's done, it's wearable, and will hopefully fit fine? I guess I could always roll the hem up shorter even more if I decide I don't like the length on the girls.

    36. My good buddy @Shayde_789 was kind enough to share some renfaire-style patterns with me, so I figured I'd try my hand at making a bodice to match the skirt! After this I might make a longer skirt, make the matching one able to be worn either as a petticoat or an overskirt! I'll probably use the brown swirly cotton I made shoes with last round for that one. Slowly but surely building a wardrobe for these girls!

    39. I draw the final concept for my outfit. It will be a dress and some sort of a coat above it, with some puff sleeves and long on the arm. There will be pearls, jewels, fur, fluid fabric. Well, I will try to lol. I moved to another house few months ago so I don't have all my fabrics with me. I will try to be the best accurate possible to my design.

    41. Lovely designs.

I used to do this but they so often ended up with changes I mafe along the way tht they didn;t look very much like the inital designs and I took to skipping hte drawing part and strtign straight in on the sewing.

Nice - upcycling and getting a military outfit from actual military fabric.

    43. @dailymare Okay, that is the cutest doll butt ever! I can certainly see why you wouldn’t want to cover it up.;)

@skumring Ooooh…how perfect for Snow White! I love the time period you’ve chosen.

@Moonycat31 That is a beautiful design! Truly lovely!:) I cannot wait to see how this outfit progresses.

    44. @PoeticSoul Thank you ! I will try to make patterns now. ^^

@Teddy Haha yeah, I make changes from the original design too often. But I like to have a base and see a global thing even if I make changes when I sew it. ^^

Can't wait to see all the projects ! Many good ideas here. I'm happy to be part of this. =)

    45. Tonight, I cut out Vhei-wen's pants, so that's a pretty good start. Its been so long since I made pants that I had to find a video on how to sew them. Oops. :doh:sweat:lol:

Because Doll Chateau bodies are so alien, I cut the fabric to be wider and longer than needed. I plan on using a cord to gather the waist together, instead of a belt and belt loops.

Oh well, IIRC, at least a couple of years have gone by since I last made anything, so its about time I actually made something instead of buying something. :3nodding: I'm going to get a start on my hand-sewing tonight (its nearly 4am here), and then tomorrow, I'll settle in to watch something while I continue.

Strangely enough, I'm actually really looking forward to this.:thumbup

    51. Everybody's progress is looking great! I'm slowly making headway on the bodice, tiny stitches but it's almost halfway done! One the bottom is hemmed I'll pretty much have to wait until the dolls get here to size it to their bodies unless I decide to go the ribbon route but I'm not sure if I want to yet. It's looking a little wonky at the moment, I'm hoping it'll look nice when worn at least. I keep inheriting fabric that works well with this round from friends, so after this who knows what I'll make! :XD:

    56. Welp, Vhei-wen's pants are done. Because of how unusual Vhei-wen's body shape is, I've had to modify his pants to fit the body.

The pants ended up working best with a wrap-around beltline to fit his extremely narrow waist.

      Padawan Jedi pants for Vhei-wen
      by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr

Believe it or not, his legs are straight in these pants. I still need to wash them to get rid of the sewing pencil marks and hopefully some of the stiffness of the fabric. Hopefully, the fabric will relax and straighten out afterwards, or I can iron and steam them. The pants are made to tuck into calf-high boots I have yet to buy, that's why they look baggy while he's wearing these short boots.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to do his tunic. His wings don't detach, so I'm trying to figure out how to make this cream-colored undertunic and the tan overtunic so that they look and fall correctly. Ideally, I'd like for the undertunic to be able to tuck into the pants so the pants aren't so baggy.

      Any ideas? *_*:sweat

    57. Well done!

Good luck with the tunic. Can you get arund the wings by doing it so it looks right but doesn't open at the front, and hooks or velcros together in two parts at the back (above the wings, and below the wings)...? Sort of like backless wistcoats fit:

Just my thought on how I'd approach it.

      Teddy

    58. @Ryuichi Sakuma 13 Good work on the pants! I feel your problems with such a difficult body. I have a few Doll Chateau bodies that always leave me shaking my head, and require real finessing to fit. And I’ve fussed with winged bodies too, but never at the back like yours are…that one has me scratching my head. I think I’d just cut two long vertical slits all the way to them hem and finish them nicely. Then they could either remain open or be closed with velcro perhaps, depending on the drape.

@Teddy You’re always a great resource for this thread, Teddy!:) Yes, that’s a great option.

    59. Unfortunately for me, Vhei-wen's wings fit pretty close together.

      by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr

But, @Teddy and @PoeticSoul, I think that doing a combination of waistcoat, velcro, and vertical slits sound like they would work! I think that I'm going to have to think about how to do this so that it looks the way it needs to.

There's still a tabard that fits over it, but I may have to fake that part. :sweat
