Wearables Sewing project: Outfit for Phylo [YOSD]

Oct 30, 2022

    1. Hello there!

It’s the first time I try to do anything for a doll that isn’t an MSD.

      Phylo’s drawings by @lunaticlover :

    2. YAY looking forward to it!

    3. The art is so stylish! I look forward to seeing you recreate the clothes in fabric! Also, I am definitely saving those examples of vests - I was planning on making some vests for my larger doll and that brown suede one in the upper right has a beautiful design.

      Good luck with the pattern-making!

    4. I searched the singled-out picture and found out it's by LENA HOSCHEK
I hope it helps you find it from different angles!

    5. I think I'm ready to move on to the clothes themselves.

During the week, I took some measurements I think it's important to have at hand, especially because the doll is not mine.

Having everything written down helps me when I have to figure out why something went wrong, or why tie proportions are not coming out right.

However, most of my first patterns comes from moulage techniques, using paper instead of cloth:
I pretty much tape the paper on the center of the doll and check where the darts should be placed etc. Once I'm done, I double check it matches the measurements I took.

Up to now, I worked only with half of the doll. So I try to see how it works as a full "shirt" by transferring it to fabric and checking it if fits the doll.
This test on fabric usually becomes my dummy! It's not a perfectly symmetrical thing, but it really helps me to visualize what I'm making provided it's easier to pin the fabric on it than it is on the doll.

Now that I know my pattern works, I'll soon start drafting the pieces of clothes!

    6. Thank you! I'll take a look for it. Extra angles would definitely help figure out my own pattern.

It looks like you are making great progress! I like those fabric mannequins - as you say, it is definitely an advantage to be able to pin fabric to the mannequin. It helps avoid scratching/staining the doll, too.

    8. I made all the patterns I needed and started trying to maker the pants and get the right shape for it.

It fits the doll, but the shape is not what we were hoping for. I kinda knew in my heart these pants would take more than one single try. Our dolls are always displayed sitting down, so we decided to add more to the hem was the way to go, so it will always look like pants, not bloomers.
An image I added to my reference board besides the designs my wife drew me:
So I added pleats to the waistline and added some an inch more at the hem.

      Let's see how it goes!!

    9. The biggest challenge is sometimes just finding the right kind of fabric for such a project. Especially if the outfits are supposed to be puffy, yet not too stiff.
You have come up with a really lovely design and I hope it will all work out the way you envisioned it.
I'll be watching your progress ^___^.

    10. I'm struggling a bit with the fabric indeed!
For now, I'm using plain cotton just for mock-up, but such small dolls are a bit tricky to choose the right fabric!

    11. Mock-up phase still going on!

For the pants, more flair was added and the waist is going a bit lower. To hold the shape, I've added a tule lining:

Also, I checked my shirt pattern. So far, so good!

    12. Hello again!
This is the progress so for:
      the shirt mock-up is done!
Now for the waistcoat, I am not very pleased to it, and my wife asked to longer points in the front. So I'll try it the new design next.

Something like this (plus a deeper neckline):

    14. This is so lovely! Sewing in such a small scale is very difficult but you make it work so well!

    15. Thank you so much :D

    16. If you make a vest with long tips, you may want to put in boning, like thin trips of plastic, to keep the points from flipping up.
