Wearables Sewing Project: Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 149 ]

Aug 1, 2025

    1. @JaxxCapta what a cute outfit it looks perfect for your doll I love the way it fits her, Bravo! ;)

@Leenah thank you, I appreciate your kind feedback, I did try to make something to go over it and now I’m feeling like I should try one one time. I’ll see how the rest of the month goes! ;)

@PoeticSoul awe thank you so much I’m happy you like my doll, I try to make all my dolls look cute!
I may give it another go at something to go with the dress but at the time I posted, I was over it because the over dress I made out of the little bit of Alice material I had, was a flop and I worked so hard on it. I’m getting over it now though and all the sweet comments make me want to try again. ;)

      @Leo Pheonix thank you!
Oh wow that is so perfect for your doll, what a great job, I love it! ;)

@SunnyPinkSky thank you very much, after my view of failure, with such sweet comments like yours, I’m feeling a bit better about it and may push on with one more try for the over dress. ;)

@lully.lullers I just know that your new project is going to turn out so well! Love the peek at what’s to come and such a cute mock up drawing! ;)

    4. [IMG]Cottagecore progress
The bodice complete, without sleeves. I’m very pleased with how closely the finished bodice fits what I had in mind! It’s my first time making a top like this.

My dress’s fatal flaw! I didn’t measure enough fabric for the back closure. Big oops! So I added in a panel so it would in fact close up haha

      [IMG]Cottagecore Susu
The finished dress! My only gripe is that the skirt lays a bit funny. But I just try to poke it into place. I put her on her pointe ballet feet. I think she looks like a meadow fairy!

    7. @lully.lullers that turned out so pretty, the material is perfect and it looks so pretty on your doll! ❤️ Well done!

    8. This is so beautiful on your girl…amazing work! And I’m also impressed with the “fix” you made to the back to facilitate the closing. Being able to come up with sewing corrections is a wonderful and necessary skill when working in this scale.:3nodding: The super cute fabric is so perfect for this application too, and she does indeed look like a meadow fairy.

    10. Hooray! :cheer I’m finally completely done with Euphemera’s wardrobe. I decided against any kind of a decorative overdress because yeah, burnout is a real thing, but mostly because I truly enjoy her in this particular style and didn’t want to detract from her basic cottagecore look which suits her character so perfectly. This late spring/summer she got 5 outfits (with coordinated blouse, bloomers, tiered skirt, and hairbows. I’ve broken the news to her that this is all she’s getting…I don’t care how cute she is.

    11. @lully.lullers I love the dress so much and especially the fabric! I used to have a dress for myself so similar to this (it had thin straps instead of puffed sleeves) but gave it to my sister because yellow really doesn’t look good on me. :...( I have a doll on the way that I want to make similar clothes in yellow flower prints since I can’t wear them  The dress you made makes me both miss that dress (even if it’s found a better home) and more excited for the doll I’m waiting for to make stuff for her.

Your dolly looks darling in it :love

    12. Thank you! Yellow isn’t my best color either :pout: So I’m glad I can dress my dolls in it!

    13. I'm sure she can deal with that. All those beautiful garments makes up a very respectable doll wardrobe. :)

    14. I think that dress is perfect @mydaffer - the lace overskirt's so pretty and summery :daisy

Those fabrics look great together @Leo Pheonix - she is going to look awesome and very dark & witchy in them :spider:

@lully.lullers wow you don't hang about LOL - 2 beautiful outfits! That dress is so adorable :fangirl:

@PoeticSoul Euphemera has been well and truly spoiled with so many beautiful clothes this year! So pretty and detailed - a lot of work <3

Meanwhile I confess I haven't sewn anything yet but I have just caved in and bought some lace :XD: Will I be inspired to start stitching once it's delivered? Don't hold your breath LOL

    15. @PoeticSoul that’s so beautiful, your girl wears the colors well. I love the entire outfit in all the colors but this color is my favorite on her! ❤️ You make the same outfit look so awesome!!

      Thank you @elve ❤️

    16. I’ve run into even more problems and this prompt is probably out for me, at least during this month.

While I had success in getting my sewing area set up for this month, I hadn’t accounted for my machine to give me the sorts of problems it has. For every minute of actual sewing, there have been hours of troubleshooting. This has made quickly testing patterns and pattern adjustments impossible, never mind actual finished pieces.

I will be taking the machine to be repaired/having a tune up, but that means I’ll be without it for a week. :( And there goes my chance for finishing an outfit this month — or at least very unlikely if it all has to be by hand.

Each outfit had something like 5 layers planned and I don’t think I can work that quickly. I still want to make the outfits as planned, but they will not be done this month.

      • x 3
    17. @lully.lullers Wow, what a beautiful dress! The lace around the hem is just perfect. But yeah, I feel you so hard on needing to fudge back closures at the very end.

@PoeticSoul Congrats on finishing her wardrobe! The fabric on that skirt is so pretty. Five whole outfits with accessories and everything... wow!

@Leenah Oh no!! Not the sewing machine woes :(That's so frustrating, I'm sorry. Fingers crossed that at least once it's repaired, it stays in good shape.

    18. Thank you all so much for your lovely comments everyone. It’s truly been appreciated.:) What a wonderful round this has been so far…all the works and plans and designs have been wonderful!

Equipment issues that curtail your creativity are just the worst!:...( My sympathy goes out to you, truly. Hopefully it can be repaired quickly enough for you to join us in next month’s round…it’s Designers Choice, and open to any style, so your wonderful plans could just continue there if you wish. Certainly we’d love to see them come to fruition.

    19. @JaxxCapta and @PoeticSoul Thank you, I'm hoping that it just needs a tune up. I've kind of expected that it would have to be replaced at some point though -- it was my grandmother's and was bought in the early 90's so it's not entirely surprising that it's causing some issues now. Still, I hope I can get a few more years out of it. :sweat If not, it's had a long life span at least.

Most of Jane's outfit needed to be done on the machine, but I might be able to do Adelheid's by hand and still finish in time if I go back to my original concept for her (sleeveless and more summery looking). The main piece is based off of an old 1920's dress pattern, not a very complicated design. Apparently there's a variant of mori that has a bit of a nautical/seashore aesthetic, and so I am adjusting the outfit a little to align somewhat better with this.

      • x 3
    20. Well I've completely caved in now and bought yet more fabric and lace for this project, but not yet sewn anything :XD: There's still 12 days till the end of the month though - there is time!

Talking of sewing machines, this will be my first attempt at using my vintage sewing machine bought from ebay in a state of disrepair and fixed by me, with the help of numerous youtube videos, which was great fun! Only does straight stich obviously but that's OK as doll's clothes don't get a lot of washing, so if it frays inside it's not a big deal

      • x 4
    21. Everyone's got so much done! And it's all so pretty!

I got unexpectedly very, very busy this month. I've been out of the house more than in it. All I've managed to do so far is pattern and cut, though I did finish one skirt. I'll try to make time tonight or tomorrow, but otherwise it'll have to wait until next week. It doesn't help that I wound up planning whole outfits instead of just the skirts, whoops.

      • x 3
    22. No progress towards a final piece yet, but a lot of progress in getting there.

The pattern I got for the dress is human sized — so I printed it at 25 percent and used the smallest size. The bodice ended up being a little too big and not quite long enough. The neckline was also just a tad too low. So I am making some adjustments to it to fit my doll. I kind of expected this first bodice to not work, but at least it wasn’t disastrously off!

I do have some concerns over the fabric being too thick, but we’ll see

    23. Oops!

I was messing around with the last rounds outfits and the new one for Nono and then my dog got real sick and dolls and sewing went to the back burner. My dog is a bit on the up and up but take’s priority and my mind and body has been emotionally exhausted. I was hoping to make an over dress before the end of the month.

    24. I’m not sure at this point if I can get everything done by the end of the month, but I’m going to try my best. Mako deserves a cute outfit. <3 Designing my fabric took what felt like an eternity, but I did a test print last night and it looks like everything is in order. I’m pretty happy with how the design turned out, even if it doesn’t really align with the vision I had. Illustration/graphic design is definitely not something I typically do, so for me it’s decent enough. Going back and forth between procreate and photoshop was not fun. :XD: My sister promised to teach me similar photoshop functions in procreate so next time I won’t have to switch lol. Hopefully I will be able to finish printing a fabric roll and cutting it all out today.

    25. And then I bought even more fabric and even more lace! Hoping this is a shopping project rather than a sewing one LOL - I'm excellent at shopping!

I'm basing my Mori Kei dress on this lovely one bought from etsy years ago To the Woods!

So I'm slowly building up all the different materials and trim used in that - I've got the final (?) order from amzon to pick up at the post office next week then I may even sew something! I'm waiting for 2 more packs of lace plus some cream pillowcases I bought to cut up one and use the other as a pillowcase - cheaper than buying fabric!

As well as the stuff in this photo I've got a beige pinstriped pillowcase to cut up for the main body of the skirt. The patterned fabric in the photo is a pack of 50 pre-cut squares (12") so I'll have plenty to choose from for that patterned overlay shown under the lace overskirt in the outfit above, although 12" square will only be enough for the front panel of Delia's dress as she's SD sized

    26. @SunnyPinkSky that is awesome, love it, love it! It turned out great!❤️ Love the colors!

@elve I love all of that material and lace, I want all of that!!! LoL

You have great taste and I love how everything compliments one another! ❤️

      • x 1
    27. Thank you @mydaffer :fangirl: That fabric pack is SO pretty - just £15 by flic-flac on amzon & it has so much potential other than doll's clothes, in spite of being only 12" squares. The 12" deep lace even cheaper at £3 for 5m - so they were super bargains! I looked at 'fat quarters' on amzon too but nothing really grabbed me - It is a good place to buy variety packs of fabric for doll sewing though!

    28. Well, it’s early Sunday morning and I finished my Mori girl outfit only the other Nono looked better in the multi color outfit from last round and although the girl was apart for a face up for about 3yrs (yikes - not finished) I think it suit her perfectly! I’m actually loving it, but before, not so much. I may just leave her like this. ;)

    29. Oh wow! I love<3 this so much…and your Nono looks absolutely adorable in it. That jacket just works wonderfully and ties it all together in a very natural and eclectic way. True mori inspiration…beautifully done!:)

    30. Oh my thank you so much! Ironically I have a few materials to sew with in a different room and bumped into it last night. When I put it up to the dress I was excited it looked perfect. I previously went through all my materials and didn’t find anything that worked with the dress colors. I’m so pleased with how this worked out because had I made a mistake, I’d be out of this material and would have been so sad I messed up. I appreciate your comment, it makes my heart happy! ❤️

    31. That looks so perfect @mydaffer :fangirl: I love the waterfall front jacket, it's very 'mori' and the headscarf completes the outfit beautifully! I didn't realise she had no faceup either - she looks super cute without a faceup & so natural in that outfit too - Well Done!

Still no sewing here LOL - I had to rest today - but I still have 7 days! Nearly September already - I can't believe it :hamster:

    32. @elve thank you very much, I literally had no where to go with this and last night, early am, I bumped in this material in a different room! So glad you like it! ❤️

I just couldn't kick myself into doing my project this month. I'll save it for the next Mori round or Unfinished Business, or even next months Designer’s Choice. I just kept getting sidetracked by little things this month. :aangel:

    35. Well, I think this is about all I'm going to get done this round.

I have no idea what happened, but everything that could go wrong with that knit fabric, did go wrong. I've never had issues in the past, but I had all the issues here. At least the white skirt is cute? I'll finish the other pieces eventually, but probably not until this month is over.

    36. @BlackSheep I love this and I see nothing wrong with it. You may expected something a bit different in the way of sewing but it looks great on your doll, it looks to be a perfect fit and I love the materials and colors. In other words, your doll looks amazing in the adorable outfit you made her! Well done! ❤️ ;)

    39. @BlackSheep Regardless of your difficulties, this turned out really cute! And your girl looks so sweet in it too. She’s certainly a very sweet looking sculpt and this outfit truly enhances that look.:)

    40. Here's Isora in her finished Dark Mori outfit. She's not wearing the underskirt I made first with it because it's so moch longer than this skirt that they didn't look right together.

    44. Thanks everyone! I'm really proud of how well it came out! She's going to get more Dark Mori clothes in the future, and I also plan to make her some gothic Lolita style clothes.

    45. Your girl looks super-cute in that outfit @BlackSheep - Well done for finishing an outfit (unlike me LOL)

@Leo Pheonix Your girl looks super spooky in her outfit - it suits her so perfectly! Well done for finishing an outfit by the deadline!

I have managed to make a start on Delia's Mori girl outfit today! Finally got all my fabrics together & washed, rearranged my flat so I can leave an ironing board up permanently (can't sew without an iron!)

And found a good space to put my huge heavy 1950's hand crank sewing machine at last - I've had it a year and have refurbished it, mended it, cleaned it but also over-oiled it LOL - it was unusable when found it on ebay but it sews perfectly now, so I'm very happy to use it for the first time today, and hoping the oil has finally finished dripping out of it!

I managed to sew this lace to what will be Delia's underskirt, and sew the side seams. Then realised this vintage machine is a flat bed only so should have done the casing for the waist elastic before sewing the side seams but never mind. Had to stop sewing for today as I am not the woman I used to be so can't stand for too long nowadays (arthritis). But as next month's theme is 'Designers Choice' I'll continue with the Mori outfit through September & hopefully get it finished!

    46. Haven’t updated in a while. My hand sewing attempt didn’t go well, not entirely. The dress came out alright, but unfortunately the way it was constructed makes it difficult to actually get on my doll. I will have to adjust the pattern again. A new doll also arrived so I have been making her a few clothing items. I think for next month I will try to work on the Mori outfits again, they’ll just be late for being posted here. For “designers choice” it will be anything for my new doll.

@Leo Pheonix I really like your dark mori outfit! I was hoping to see some dark mori

    47. I hope it's okay to still post my finished project late (again). Now that summer is over I won't be traveling as much so I should have access to internet so I can post on time. I actually meant to post before I left, but forgot. :doh

Here is my finished project for Mako. It does look better when she's standing, as when she's sitting the inner dress gets shortened quite a bit, but I still like it. I can't say it turned out exactly like I expected. I didn't fit test anything while sewing (basically illegal, I know) so I wasn't expecting how massive this dress truly is. Don't get me wrong, it fits her well, it's just a lot poofier than I thought it would be. I did hand dye most of the lace to go well with the fabric I designed, and covered my own buttons for the first time. I think it was well worth the extra effort. The only thing I didn't really like about the pattern is that while the inner dress is lined, the over dress is not. I thought that a bit backwards since the over dress is mostly meant to be worn open, which means it's of course more likely to have the inside exposed. I also put various laces and pintucks wherever I wanted instead of sticking to the pattern.
