Wearables Sewing Project: Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 132 ]

Mar 1, 2024

    1. Everyone's plans and outfits are looking so nice, this thread is so inspiring!:D

I finished the shirt, and I must say I'm pretty satisfied with it!
I made the shirt with the instructions from Bernadette Banner's video, though I did opt for elastic in the cuffs instead of button closures and added a ribbon to the collar to help it look neater, and because of some issues with measurements (=I'm very bad at maths) I didn't cut big enough pieces to do any of the gathering (shoulders and back) but I'm not too upset about that.

Next up... accessories maybe? I will be pretty busy all of next week, so bigger projects (like the dress) will have to wait, but I'll probably have the time to make something small :chibi (Also my resin crew will grow bigger with a new girl next week, so I might just be too dazzled by her to focus on anything lol)

    2. Thank you @Leo Pheonix !

@Ankka - the shirt looks very neat! Nobody has to know some maths didn't math :sweat

I had exactly 5 pieces left from adjusting a pair of pants for myself a while ago so I decided it's time to put those scraps to use.

Of course there wasn't enough for a proper skirt  and I wish it was a little bit longer, but I can let her into the woods and allow her to sit on a mossy rock with this... thing? on at least. It looks warm and will be nice to mix and match other items with.

I think I'm done-ish! Might still think of some accessories like a backpack or a hat.

    3. @cobaltconduct It definitely looks like a good protective layer to keep that white skirt clean when she decides to take a break by sitting on a nearby log or stump!

    4. I've got time to catch up on y'all's progress and I absolutely adore what everybody's doing!!!

@QuaintMysteryDolls I LOVE your color choices, and I completely agree about making the most of different textures! She's a lucky little doll to be spoiled like this :love

@Cryptid those foxes are absolutely delightful, but I think the leafy teal is my favorite! I can't wait to see your next pieces with this beautiful skirt!

@kaschan502 I love the addition of the underdress, and that lovely bordeaux color really brings out the red accents in your other fabrics! I love the contrasting drapes of the vest and underskirt.

@cobaltconduct after following your restoration project for this girl it feels so good to see her getting a beautiful wardrobe!! She looks ready to forage for edible plants. As a kid I had a white dress that was my favorite thing to play outside in, to my mother's horror lmao, one day I came back in absolutely stained in mulberry juice from head to toe and I was too little to understand why I couldn't keep the beautiful tie-dye project I had just made :XD: So maybe she's just looking for the perfect natural dye to treat it with while she's enjoying her time in the woods

@Ankka her outfit is perfect! I would've never known the blouse gave you trouble, it looks fab! You've brought your design to life perfectly :D

    5. Hello there ! It's not finished yet but here what I've done for now. =)

I came to a vintage convention in december and there was many whool samples here (because of the ugly sweater contest XD) and I took some of them. It's one of them. ^^ And I just sewed a vest to it to make a long waistcoat. =)

    6. Now that I've finally arrived at an (equally abused second hand) permanent body option for Michi I can finally make all the cute things for her none of my other dolls want to wear - I'm really happy to finally make some pieces with just her in mind. Those poor project dolls sure need some extra love! I guess she's been through enough staining not to go rolling around in mulberries :sweat But maybe a dyeing project is not such a bad idea given that I have a lot of white cotton stashed away!

@Moonycat31 - the long vest looks great! Samples are always a great material for dolls.

    7. Oh my!:XD: I’m so tickled by the amazing progress you all are making this month! Every one of these pieces has so much character and creativity…absolutely wonderful additions to the wardrobes of the dolls you’ve made them for. I haven’t been able to make a start on mine yet, having been felled by a particular nasty and very contagious stomach bug that lingers on. But hopefully soon. In the meantime, you are all keeping my sewing spirits up with your wonderful creations.:D

My computer desk makes this fabric look way more washed out than it actually is-it's the same color as the dress in Sena's sample image-but that's not the important bit. The important part is that I got all this handstitching for the bodice done tonight, so tomorrow I can move onto cutting it out so I can figure out binding and ruffles.

      • x 13
    9. @Cryptid the bodice looks amazing already! I think it's a perfect complement for the skirt, it'll really emphasize that broomstick silhouette!

    10. I finished up the belts and pouches for Lotus' outfit, so I think she's done for this month! I have some ideas for others in my crew, so I might stitch together some more goodies before the month is over. <3

    11. @Cryptid I’m very excited to see where this goes from here…it’s a truly lovely form and is certain to look wonderful on the doll.:)

@kaschan502 Oh well done! She certainly looks like she belongs in a nature setting. I love the mix of fabrics and details.:D

    12. Finished Jalaa's Mori outfit! The skirt is made from an old skirt of mine. I'm hoping to also make something for another doll this month as well.

    13. @Leo Pheonix That’s an excellent re-use of fabric in the skirt. I wholeheartedly applaud recycling lovely pieces like this and showcasing that beautiful embroidered trim at the hemline. Well done!:)

    14. Okay so after some serious procrastination, I've finalised the mockup for my elf-Jude's Thranduil-esque coat/robe/thing, trimmed the seam allowance to a reasonable length, basted it together and evened out the hemline with piecing. Normally I wouldn't go quite this far with a mockup but I have one shot at making it with the blue/copper silk I intend for it so I need the mockup to be as close to perfect as I can get it before I deconstruct it and use it to cut the silk pieces. I've also got some gorgeous green silk which I'm going to use to make a version for human-Jude. Possibly knee length instead of full, I haven't quite decided.

    15. I'm not done yet, but I wanted to show the progress I made today!

I am so proud of how the outfit is turning out. It isn't perfect, but so far, it's very cute :whee:

I still want to make a shawl, finish the strap for the top, and crochet a teeny tiny bandana, but for now I think I'll call this a win and take a break!

      • x 10
    16. @Mamo @PoeticSoul Thank you for the feedback! I ended up having to go down about a half inch from the top after I cut it out-I think the pattern piece I printed needs to be resized to 85-90%. I added binding made from the dark leaf fabric and had a go at making a ruffle. Still not 100% sold on it.

[IMG]moridressprogress by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr

Next up is to do the shift (and my attempt at some fancier sleeves; they may need to be partially lined), decide how I feel about the ruffle with that included, and maybe make a little shawl out of some brown/metallic, lacy-ish fabric I have.

    17. Everyone's projects look fantastic!!! So many folks hit the ground running this round, looks like! :D

On my front, well, I forgot the whole fitting things over hips deal... ehh, the skirt I started with makes a nice Barbie dress, I guess. To try and get some actual BJD stuff done, I pulled out a thrifted shirt I've been sitting on for a while, a RAD pattern, and some friends to body-double with. The straps ended up too long to make a dress that doesn't, erm, provide wardrobe failures, but it looks cute layered under Clover's blouse and mori's big on layers, right?

I might see about making a lil apron or knitting a shoulder bag to go with it.

    18. @QuaintMysteryDolls That’s so sweet on your girl! And I know how difficult it can be to sew in such a tiny scale, so kudos to you for doing such a great job.:thumbup

@Cryptid I love the mix of fabrics you’ve used…they’re so nature inspired! This is turning out to be a fascinating outfit indeed.:)

@JaxxCapta You’re right, Mori’s big on layers and I love the way you utilized that aspect here. It’s such a perfect look for your bunny girl.:D

    19. I stopped receiving notifications (again) so just looked through a lot of posts to catch up - how wonderful to see so much progress on all these projects!

    20. Joining a little late but the theme fits my girl so well since she's supposed to wear mainly mori-style! I've been collecting fabrics and lace for this reason and by joining this round I'm forcing myself to finally do something with it.

Here's what I'll be using and who I'll be using it for. The dress she's wearing is the first piece of doll-clothing I've ever sewn and I might redo it at one point, the socks were bought online.

      And here's my concept:

    21. I've started working on an outfit for a second doll, since this style also suits his character. Here's Morpheus, my Fairyland Jiyu.

    22. @inkydoll Oh wow, the textures in that fabric and those trims look great together, I'm excited to see how it comes together!

@Leo Pheonix A cute lil guy! Is he a like, woodland fairy, with the elf ears and all?

Due to misremembering appointment times, I ended up with some extra time this morning and decided to use it to do some quick sewing. I found a chunk of what's probably upholstery or curtain fabric of some flavor in my ottoman; I loved the texture of the fabric and the flower embroidery on it, even if it is really thick at doll scale! I threw it together into - you guessed it - a gathered rectangle skirt. Due to the thickness, it stretched the elastic too much for my slim minis to wear, but Megu got a new skirt! The color scheme's even fitting because, well, it started snowing today. Happy spring.

    23. @JaxxCapta What a lovely piece of fabric to turn into a skirt…I can certainly see why you found it so captivating.:)

    24. :cheerHooray for being done at last with my plans for this month’s project: Cottagecore (in this specific instance, Country Lolita.) It took every bit as long as I thought it would, seeing as how my old machine can’t do gathers, necessitating that they all be done entirely by hand.:sweat I’m breaking the elaborate components down into groupings over the next few monthly themes because a) they fit the appropriate themes fairly well and b) it’s so labor intensive, I’d be pulling my hair out if I tried to pull it off all at once. I keep reminding myself that it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m designing my own patterns from scratch, so I’ll continue to be patient with myself.

This month’s plan was to make an underskirt and a pair of bloomers:

    25. Ooooh! So many tucks and ruffles!

      Teddy

    26. @PoeticSoul Those are some lovely garments! I love how the pin tucks work with the dots, it gives some dimention to the pattern as well as to the texture. This outfit is going to be amazing.

Myself, I didn't get much fun sewing time this month. And I anticipate that this will continue for at least another week or so. But I wanted to make something for this round.
I needed an easy win, so I made a rectangle skirt. Don't judge me. :XD:
Petronella doesn't look entirely pleased with the lack of a proper top to go with it, but she will have to bare with it for now. Eventually I think something like a white blouse with some colourful embroidery would look nice with it. Perhaps a bodice or waistcoat of some sort as well.

    27. Nowt wrong with a reactangle skirt - and it does look very pretty.

      Teddy

    28. Thank you Teddy!
In general I agree, rectangle skirts are great, but personally I find them a bit boring to make. The concept makes an excelent base for design and construction, but a plain one? Nah, I'd rather have some fun. Hopefully the ribbon and lace is enough to redeem it.

    29. @PoeticSoul Wow, that looks like it took a lot of work :o Those details are amazing!

@Lillith I think your skirt turned out great! Your ideas for the top sound good, I think embroidery is soo pretty and would fit well with the skirt!

I managed to finish a (not as clean looking) skirt and the shawl. It was a lot of fun even though my hands hurt after sewing on the lace trims. Here she is wearing both:

(I forgot to add the second bead to the end of the shawl when taking pictures)

And here are three ways to wear the shawl:

I wish I had had the time to make a coat, but she'll have to wait a bit. Also, a proper dress that actually fits her.

    30. @inkydoll She looks so pretty in her new items. That shawl is super pretty, especcially when worn as a head scarf. :D

    31. Thanks everybody! It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot of skills while doing it and I’m happy with the results so far.

@Lillith I don’t think it looks boring at all! That trim really adds some focus and dimension to your design and I love your ideas for adding a white blouse with embroidery to complete the look. That will be perfect, and I do so love seeing your embroidery!:)

@inkydoll That’s such a perfect mori look! And I love the photos of how the shawl can be worn for different looks. Well done!:D

    32. Thank you for your kind words!
And I just realized, next month is "Designers Choice" so I could potentially just keep going and roll the blouse over to the next round.

    33. I started a dark mori outfit for Naomie (same base of the other one). Don't think it will be finished this round but she will have two different styles like that. ^^
Two different grey for the top + another piece of wool. And a skull fabric for the dress. =)
(sorry for the fash picture but I can't put up with strong light at home for now ^^')

    34. Guess who got done just under the wire! I tried to make shoes. Then I wasn't satisfied with them. Then I was distracted by a new arrival. But today I buckled down: slippers sewn, velcro added to the bodice, and longer elastic put into the skirt waistband. I did a bunch of experimenting with this process and it's been educational. And now I have a full outfit for her that's not in desperate need of repairs!

    35. @Cryptid I love the fabrics you used for this outfit…they’re so very mori and you made so many pieces. Your girl looks great in this outfit. Well done!:thumbup

    36. @Lillith Hehe, I feel you on the gathered rectangle skirts. They're so easy! So fast! God, far too easy and fast! That trim looks good, though.

@inkydoll The shawl is so cute! I love it as a headscarf.

@Moonycat31 I'm digging that skull fabric. And hey, next month is Designer's Choice, so there's plenty of time to get things done!

@Cryptid Wow, even slippers? Good on ya! And yay for functional outfits!

I got some sewing in this weekend, decided to make Clover a lil Easter outfit. Got a blouse, jumper, apron, and some legwarmers. Then of course dinged up one of her ears taking her out for a photoshoot. No more adventures for her until I find a better way to secure them...

      But! Things got sewn.

    37. The mori x Easter combo works really well; the ribbon bodice look with the flower pattern is cute.
