Wearables Sewing Project: Leftovers and Recycling [ Round 119 ]

Feb 1, 2023

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

This month is exactly what the title says it is, a time to use up some of those leftover fabrics and trims from other projects, or just general recycling of used bits and pieces you can’t bear to throw away. Got a favorite old shirt from days past still hanging in your closet? How about that cool stuff you couldn’t resist at the resale charity shop? Or that cocktail dress with the pretty beadwork you bought for a song at that garage sale? Well, it’s time to dig it all out and whip up something fabulous for our dolls!

      Week 1: 2/1-2/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 2/8 to 2/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 2/16 to the end of February
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 120 ] Vintage and Retro
      [ Round 121 ] Monochrome
      [ Round 122 ] Theatre/Masquerade

    2. I had meant to clear other (long overdue) projects in otrder to take part but I'm still struggling to do that so I'll probaboy cheer from the sidelines again for this round.

      Teddy

    3. Excited for this one! I have been meaning to make a cardigan out of my old cardigan. It'll be for a Feeple60 Cygne who I named Fae.

I don't have a pattern, I will have to draft one myself. Though I want it to be similar to the original sweater. Which is just a basic, thin cardigan from H&M. I just love this cardigan too much to part with it lol. When the collar area got holes I bought a replacement.

    4. I am a serial acquirer of remnants so I think a large portion of my fabric stash counts as leftovers and recycling.

My focus this month is going to be partially on creating a dress form for my bimong doll and probably some better day-to-day wear for her. I find working directly on the doll stressful, I'm always scared I'll scratch it with a pin or get pen marks on it. Not to mention dealing with limbs, heads and hands.

      • x 3
    5. Ditto.

      Teddy

    6. The majority of my fabric stash is thrifted or old clothing, along with most of my thread and trims, so this is perfect for me! I've got a handful of Valentines-y odds and ends, even, so maybe this month we'll see how big a pinksplosion I can make. :)

      [IMG] [Link just in case]

That's the fabric I'm planning to focus on, though it's not all, by far. I have a good chunk of pink and orange lace, as well as a bag of what seem to have been quilting fabric samples? A number of those are various shades of pinks and purples, too.

I'm probably gonna start with the two at the bottom of the photo; I want to make pajamas out of the light pink (it has a fuzzy backing) and the dark pink... eh, there might be enough for a top or a short dress. Maybe I'll even look into what's trendy this year and see if I can make something fashionable, even!

The medium pink in the middle has me intimidated, some. I'm near certain it's silk, a remnant I managed to get after a costume construction class in college. (Someone else had used the material for a nightgown that was their final project.) Considering my middling-at-best sewing skills, I don't want to ruin it!

As for who to sew for, I've got my princess of pink, Tian Ni. Maybe others will be allowed to share in her bounty. :XD:

    7. I'm going to try and join in this one. I just intend to finish the steampunk project I started a few rounds back for my Soom doll. I made his pants and shirt and that was pretty much it! I still need to make his best and top hat. Fingers crossed that I can actually manage that!

I'll upload pics later. :kitty1 Right now, I have a complete disaster to clean up before I can even get to me sewing space! :nowords::nowords: Wish me luck!

      • x 1
    8. I'm picking up where I left off last time, which isn't much progress-wise lol, but oh well! Let's see what I can get done, haha

    9. If I could double dip, this month, I have another idea for this round. I have some fabric leftover from my wedding dress. I want to make a little gown for my Minifee Alicia. I feel like this is a two for one in a way. Valentine’s Day is coming up and it should be finished before my first anniversary in March. I think I’ll be able to finish both ideas since the cardigan is so simple. I have a pattern for the mini wedding dress. I’ll be using the spring dress pattern from the Sewing Fairy. Though I will be adding length to the skirt. I just gotta order more chiffon for the skirt and veil. :3nodding:

    10. I have plenty of left-overs and recyclables to play with this month, and I’m planning to use them to make accessories (hairbows, leg pieces and armlets) to complete the 6 Pokemon outfits I worked on a few months back. Not to mention, now that the doll is actually here, it’s finally time to sew on all those fasteners! I know I’ll be happy once this tiny wardrobe is complete at last!;)

Here’s my model…my mechanical yosd Dollzone Strayer. Her name is Glitch.

And here (as a reminder) are the basic outfits I’ll be completing and accessorizing:

Here are the leftover and recycled bits and pieces I’ll be working with:

    11. I DO have some progress to report now! I got the arm and neck holes cut, and pinned the shoulders where I wanted them.
[IMG]Round 119 Leftovers and Recycling! by Jules B, on Flickr

I also found a bracelet I liked much better for the belt, the big beads on the first one are pretty but also very comically large on her tiny body lol. This one is way less clunky, and I like the color better!
[IMG]Round 119 Leftovers and Recycling! by Jules B, on Flickr

It was also at this stage that I figured out what she reminds me of... this might as well be a Stranger Things cosplay, she looks like Eleven in her hospital gown :XD: Now it's just finishing raw edges and seams, and I might be able to make something extra afterward! I do have the bottom of the fabric packaging, which I cut off rather than seam rip once that turned out to be too tedious. I might make that into a shallow tote bag for her! We'll see.

    12. I'll try to be active this month as I have mostly leftovers and recycled fabrics. I have some tiny mature boys that need clothes and it only takes a little bit of fabric to make anything. I suppose it will be mostly hand sewing for this.

      • x 1
    13. I'll join!

This is matilda. She is a very old JID Tania and she is the second BJD I ever bought.

I believe she is made around 2010 give or take a year or two (I bought her second hand). She is severly yellowed and poorly enginered, but she is incredibly photogenic.
This means that a large portion of her basic warderobe is rather old as well by now. I was going through her stuff recently and realized that the elastic in some of her underwear had died, that some things have faded and worn and that some things I made back then are not at a level that I am happy with today.

So for this round I will be making her some new basics. The materials will likely be left overs from sewing my own clothes, we both wear a similar style. This will be good project for using up small scraps.

I'm looking forward to seeing what all of you make!

    14. I'll have to see if I get a chance to make something this month. I absolutely hoard fabrics and leftovers and it would be nice to be able to somewhat finish my outfit from the last round, or make something slightly similar. Unfortunately, I've been very busy the back end of last month trying to sort out tiny little jobs and redecorating and it seems it's going to take put a part of this month as well. Hopefully, I can squeeze some time in to make a little something.

Good luck to everyone this time around.

This idea looks absolutely amazing and is such a sweet thing, using leftovers from your wedding dress. Good luck, its going to look wonderful.

    15. /[IMG]
The dress progress so far. I’m adding this rose trio for color aka to hide the very wonky neckline :XD: I have the sleeves cut out but my baby decided no more sewing today. Only cuddles for the evening.

    16. Yay!

      Nice!

{smile} Good plan. It's looking good already.

      Teddy

    17. That looks absolutely lovely so far, and those little rosettes look wonderful with it. Baby cuddles trump sewing every time!;)

    18. Flowers are the BEST for hiding little sewing sins. We can keep a secret, nobody outside this thread needs to ever know. ;)

    19. I am going to have to work speedily and run up two pairs of trousers, 1.25 shirts (I have a shirt which is about 75% finished so I need to finish the rest of it) and some sort of dress by Tuesday.

Landlord has to do an inspection which means total strangers seeing the doll display. That can be weird enough for non-doll people but it gets weirder when the dolls are naked. Jarrad and Jude are both still nude and Doria's only in her underthings.

      • x 4
    20. I've finished a pair of panties! Now I am trying to decide what to make next.

@PoeticSoul I have a question. Would alterations and repairs fit into this round? It's not exactly working with leftovers, but it is recycling, in a way.

      • x 1
    21. Not @PoeticSoul , of course, but I'd say it fits, and besides, as ever with these themes, it's YOUR interpretation of the theme that drives whether it fits or not, in my opinion.

      Teddy

    22. True, but I don't want to stray too far from the intention of the projects. It seem polite to ask first.

    23. Of course.

      Teddy

    24. Yes, of course. If that’s how you interpret the theme, then of course we’d love to cheer you on!:cheer

As always, Teddy is the perfect font of wisdom for these threads! Gotta love me some Teddy!<3:thumbup

    25. Great! Thanks.
I am re-organizing my doll stuff and I've come across quite a few things that I never use because there is some problem with them.

      • x 1
    26. I REALLY should follow your example.

      Teddy

    27. Hello. I couldn't join last month, I lost my lovely cat and I'm still devasted... She was with me since 10 years... :(
I'm at a friend's house for now because I can't stay alone, I don't have many dolls with me (well, just one ^^'). So maybe I will join if I feel better.

Anyway, I love seing all your projects everyone. You are so talented and you have so many ideas. And @PoeticSoul I really love the concept of the dresses for your poet. Maybe I will try one like this one day if it does not bother you. ^^

      • x 4
    28. I’m very sorry about the loss of your beloved cat. We lost one of our dear rescue dogs due to aging a couple of months ago and were grief-stricken as well, so I know how emotionally devastating that can be. I hope you feel better soon, but be easy on yourself through your grief and take your time with things.

I have a lot of fun making Poetta’s story-robes utilizing “slow stitching” techniques. By all means, I can heartily recommend it to everyone who wants to spend time hand-sewing in a relaxing and rather meditative way. It’s peaceful and allows you to create a story for your doll visually.:)

    29. Did I say this six days ago and then promptly do nothing about it so it's now 5pm on Monday and I've just gotten around to the trousers and one of the shirts?

      Yes. Yes I did.

      • x 2
    30. I've got one hem finished, and I thought that would be a great time for an update! I also cut a slit in one side to increase the number of ways it can be worn and the size of the neckhole, lol, minifee neck connectors are in such a small head as to be unwieldly for me, lol.
I also remembered another scrap I'd been saving for Coriana here, a bit of pleather and a tiny o-ring I was going to make a belt with! So I pinned that to do a test, and it's looking good. Now to decide how to finish/tie off the belt end!

I put the bead belt on too for that full high fantasy, outfit with lots of accoutrements vibe, and I'm really loving it! Looking very New York Fashion Week with this pose, haha!
      [IMG]Round 119 L&R progress! by Jules B, on Flickr

Can't wait to see it finished, and try out different layering effects with her other clothes! :danceIf I have enough time in the month I might break out some more scraps I just came into possession of... we'll see :evilplot:

    31. Story of my sewing life...

      Excellent.

      Teddy

      • x 1
    32. Well, both the boys have trousers even if they're not actually finished trousers - I need to add closures and finish the waistband - and Jarrad has a sleeveless shirt. Still, at least there are now no visible doll genitals which was mostly what I was worried about.

      • x 1
    33. I think We've all done that.

Well done, Even a curious inspector will not likely notice how well things are finished. I think you're good.

      @Mamo Looking good.

    34. I can’t believe how long it took me to make this stuff!:doh I mean, c’mon now, it’s just a handful of accessories for a yosd outfit.:? I really enjoyed getting creative with it, and it all had to be done by hand of course, but geez…it seemed I was moving as slow as molasses with it. But in the end, I got what I wanted and I feel these extra pieces (2 hairbows, 2 armlets, and 2 leggings) perfectly expressed my doll’s character. Her name is Glitch and she’s a gaming system who fell so much in love with Pokemon games, she rebelled and went off on her own adventures. I’d already made the outfits during another month’s theme, and I thought I’d be having to make a different accessory set for all 6 of them. But thankfully, considering how long it takes to create each set, I discovered the color combinations worked out so that I only need to make 3 sets. Here’s the first set completed.

    35. @PoeticSoul now this is the cutest thing I've ever seen!!! So much versatility with those accessories!

    36. Oh wow this looks so much fun! I’ll have to try and join in next time!

These are so adorable!!! :D I love Pokémon! And Vulpix is one of my favorites too. :whee:

    37. Poetic Soul: it is indeed very relaxing to hand sew something. Even if I'm just sewing the hems etc by hand, it relaxes me.

    38. I agree!

      Teddy

    39. Thank you for your lovely comments everyone!:) I managed to complete another set of accessories over the past few days. Just one more set to go.

    41. Caftan's done! I'm pleased with how it turned out, and how easy it was. Now it's on to the belt, which is just a few quick stitches so it'll be a fast job (for once)!

    45. I didn't sew this this month but I wanted to show you the coat I sewed for Dekatria, my Elysia from Mystic Dolls. It fits with this month's theme.
I sewed this from boxers for man. XD I found the pattern interesting and I think it fits very well on her.

    47. @Moonycat31 it looks so cool! I would never guess it was boxers first. She's ready for the runway!

@Lillith @Teddy thank you both! It feels good to finish a round for once, lol, feels like it's been quite a while since I pulled that off

    48. @Mamo Yeah I've bought some boxers with fun patterns on them. I think I will make some clothes for my dolls with them. It's stretch so it fits very well on them. ^^

    49. She looks happy indeed! You did a wonderful job on this outfit. I love how complete it is, with all the appropriate accessories. Well done!:thumbup

This is absolutely delightful…a wonderful example of recycling and reusing at its best. I love how you used the decorative details of the boxers in your overall composition.:)

And as for me, Woo-hoo!:cheer I’m finally done with this month’s project. Here is my girl’s final set of accessories:

    50. @PoeticSoul thank you! It's so nice to have enough separates built up to layer into a complete look. Glitch is looking as cute as always in this set <3 I really like your use of cords and earbuds on the accessories this round, it's a great blend of her story and her personality!

    51. Adorable. And it's so good that the accessories will work with more than one outfit!

Super slow progress but here is my Minifee wedding dress so far! I ended up making the bodice over with a different pattern. I like how this one turned out! I attached the skirt so all that’s left is finishing up the back and some tweaking for the final hem. I still have to make the flower crown & veil. :) Hoping to finish in these last few days but if not oh well lol

    54. @lully.lullers That is looking so good! The pattern you’ve used on that bodice turned out beautifully and it fits so well, giving it a wonderfully tailored look. You’ve done wonderfully so far.:)

    55. Everyone's projects have turned out so good! :aheartbea:aheartbea

I haven't had a chance to even try to work on anything. Though I think I mistook this round as leftoever projects, not leftover materials, lol. Oh well. Maybe next month I'll join in...or not.

    56. [IMG]
Thank you everyone! You’re all too sweet :whee:
I’m glad it’s fitting well! The pattern is from “Meido” pattern by DGRequiem on Etsy. Though I added a liner so it’s a bit smaller than it should be I think. It just barely closes lol

I added some vine, leaf, and flower details cuz well I can’t resist. Her character is a fairy after all so I think it’s fitting. :) Still have to start applying flowers to the crown. I think I’ll add some gold wire and beads to it as well. I’ll have to sketch it :thumbup

p.s. Sorry about the blurry pic. My phone would not focus in the lamplight. :sweat
