Wearables Sewing Project: Fairytale [ Round 152 ]

Nov 1, 2025

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

With all the busyness of the holidays looming on the horizon, sometimes our minds just need a moment’s escape into a bit of fantasy…and that’s what this month’s sewing is all about. This is our Fairytale round, where you design something that you might see in a fairytale world (as varied as that might be) from folklore, fables, myths, and legends. Perhaps it’s an outfit for a troll from a classic Brothers Grimm tale, or a princess in need of rescuing, or a dashing Prince Charming in his best attire, or an animal living their best life in a village of wondrous creatures, or a modern damsel in distress navigating her way through a post apocalyptic urban fairytale. Whatever fairytale world you choose, let’s dress our dolls for a little adventuring.:)

      Week 1: 11/1 to 11/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 11/8 to 11/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 11/16 to the end of November
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 153 ] Leftovers and Recycling
      [ Round 154 ] Vintage and Retro
      [ Round 155 ] Monochrome
      [ Round 156 ] Theater/Masquerade

    2. I may as well start this off since I’ve been thinking about it for awhile. It’s basically a continuation of what I was making last month, building upon a storytelling fairytale-like theme for my girl Poetta (Volks 3-Sisters Megu.) I plan to make her some sort of an apron dress to go over what she’s currently wearing

Here she is in what I made for her last month:

And here are my inspiration images:

And here are my fabric choices for this round…not sure which ones I’ll use yet. And there will be some lace involved as well.

    3. Oh an apron dress sounds lovely!! I love the patchwork of her current dress too:)

Good luck to everyone participating this month!

    4. I am going to attempt to actually participate this month, and am probably being overambitious, but want to start trying to pattern some luxurious robes fairy-tale-esque for my ghost king, along with using some white faux fur to make a stole, akin to something like this:

I have a few different fabrics to use for them, and will probably nail it down more once I've got the pattern set.

    5. I'll probably end up admiring form the sidelines again this month.

    6. Does a Nun costume count as fairytale?

I am getting a new girl Domuya - Mona and she is on a flexi-2 body. I can't find the measurements anywhere. Maybe I'm not looking right. She was an instock, close out, sale doll. Possibly a display doll. But the company is no more and finding the measurements feels impossible. There was no measurements on Doll Peddler where I purchased her from.

I might have to wait for her to get here and take the measurements myself. I want to do a nun costume one of the older looking ones for when she plays 'Sister Agnes'. I don't even know how to make this? A long black dress, with a white yoke, and the habit. Most nuns wear shorter black dresses or just plain clothes now.

It should be just a simple long black dress, then a hooded yoke, and the habit?

Inspiration ... The one in the front row on the left side.[IMG]

    7. Oh, fun! I don't know much about the specifics of what nuns wear, but maybe looking up medieval veil and wimple tutorials would help? I think they're pretty similar.

    8. Remember, it's however YOU interpret the theme. So, if you think it counts, then it counts.

    9. @PoeticSoul Poetta's patchwork outfit is looking lovely so far, I'm looking forward to seeing it with the apron dress.

I'm sewing for Jaala, my Gem of Doll Capricorn this round. I'm not sure which direction I'm going with her outfit yet, but I think the theme suits her. Here she is-

    10. Absolutely…why not? So many fairytales are based on morality lessons after all…so it makes perfect sense to me!:thumbup

True, Teddy…so true!:) It’s all about being creative and having fun.

      • x 1
    11. @PoeticSoul The fabric with the women who have butterfly ears is beautiful, I can definitely see how it would fit with Poetta's storytelling. And gotta have lace, of course!

@lavenderbear I think overambition is the name of the game, here, heh. At least robes aren't known for having tons of shaping. Makes life a liiiittle easier.

@RabbidBunnies Ooh, congrats on the new doll! And hey if friars and monks can show up in fairytales, I think nuns should get a fair shake, too, especially going for an older style like that.

@Leo Pheonix What a cutie! Whatever you come up with for her would definitely fit right in. Her little cardigan is adorable.

I have a feeling my work for this round will extend into next month, depending on what I decide to do. I have a pile of formal fabric that needs using, so I'm doing fairytale as in fairytale wedding and ballgowns with lots of floof and frill. I've tapped Nikki and Chandra as my models because even if their characters might not be the type to wear whatever I make, they're the size where things will drape better.

I'm not sure on patterns yet, other than a vague hankering for princess seams. I had sketched out some concepts for dresses based on story tropes, but I can't remember where I put it... Ah well. I'll either find them or draw new ones.

And of course, here's the fashion victims amongst the pile of fabric:

    12. @JaxxCapta haha that's true! also part of why I'm willing to try as a relative newbie to doll sewing. good luck with the princess seams! those fabrics look like they should turn out gorgeous

    14. Oooh! Pretty daisy print!

Nice. I don't think I've heard of those patterns.

    15. I’m making good progress.:) I’ve completed the two apron dresses I’d planned for this month’s endeavors…and now it’s time to add all the storytelling elements (and those pesky buttons and buttonholes to the backs of course.) Fortunately adding the elements (bits and pieces of this-and-that which she would have picked up as cast-offs during her many adventures) is the fun part as it really lets me be creative…not to mention use up tiny pieces of fun but forgotten sewing junk amassed throughout the years.

    16. @PoeticSoul they look good so far! I love the lace trim!
I sewed the bodice and skirt together today, and gave my girl her first face-up since it was unseasonably warm. (I know it's not perfect, I'm new at it) I'm going to add some narrow ribbon to the dress to hide the imperfect seam and make it look more finished.

    17. @Leo Pheonix Aww, what lovely daisy fabric! I feel you so hard on the ribbon to hide imperfect seams, and hey, they're great ways to break up big swathes of fabric. Her faceup is cute, too! It's amazing what a bit of blush and shading can do, no matter the skill level.

@PoeticSoul That lace is gorgeous. The fringy one on the blue dress looks like it'd make for some great effects when twirling around.

    18. @Leo Pheonix I’m really loving that adorable daisy print…a bit unusual to see it on a full length dress which only adds to its charm and makes it extra special! A bit of ribbon to finish it off will make it even more wonderful. And great work on her faceup too…she looks lovely.:D

@JaxxCapta That lace was leftover from a home decorating project, and the other one was a freebee from the seller I bought so much eyelet from for my recent past sewing adventures. When I went looking for scrap pieces for this project, I came across them and thought, hey, why not?

    19. Yay! I made the nun costume! I'm okay with how it turned out. It will work for the one photoshoot in the future that I need it to work for. My poor girl is still expecting her wig in the mail, and is currently wearing an American Girl nightdress. The month is still young, so I need to make her something cute to wear. I'm going to keep on the fantasy, as that is this months theme. But modern it up a bit.

Anyway Beatrice dressed for her role as Sister Agnes...

    20. @RabbidBunnies Oh excellent work! It looks great on her too.:) I hope you get the chance to make her something cute to wear, given the rest of the month, because I’d love to see how she looks in something like that as well. And hey, a modern take on fairytales is certainly a thing…so go for it!:thumbup

    22. @RabbidBunnies Awesome work!! You did a good job getting the shapes of everything nailed down.

I've been stalling a bit on mine, but I did get some pattern drafting done at last. Tried the plastic wrap and tape method for a base, refined it on a mockup cut from an old pillowcase, and tested the refined version by making a dress with the sparkly sequin fabric I've got. It's still more evening wear than fairytale ballgown in this iteration, and of course it doesn't have such trifling things as back closures right now, but I think the silhouette is getting there:

      [IMG] (link)

I've been torn on whether I want to do a separate bodice or that all-in-one bodice and skirt. But after looking at some human-size wedding dresses, I'm thinking of doing the all-in-one cut (but of course with some added volume in the skirt, because you have to have more floofage!) out of cream satin and then adding inserts between the skirt seams of my cream lace fabric, since I think those two go well together but I haven't been able to sort out what I want to do to combine them.

And of course it probably needs a petticoat/crinoline type of deal, and a bajillion accessories because why not.

      • x 8
    23. @JaxxCapta Oh this is really pretty!

Are you sewing by hand or using a machine? I never tried to sew something all done in sequins before. I've only ever used them as trim. I love the simple cut of the dress, and the way the material fits your girl! It's very lovely!

    24. Hi! I figured I would join since I started sewing again since my guild is taking a break until next year. This theme fit one of my dolls that I have been working on for many years, my Pathos Tale Misheng. I got her a faceup this year after one of my favorite faceup artists disappeared.

Here she is (not the best photo since I didn't have one of her since she'd been back from faceup...):

I want her to dress in a dreamy, flowy outfit that may have some stains and wear. I ended up choosing one of Gracefaerie's patterns (more on that in a future update) and began selecting my fabrics. I think I will end up dyeing my fabrics since they are cotton. As far as accessories go, she is a wood spirit of some sort, so I am going to give her some wings, too. Someone on the BJD discord was having some problems making the wings from Antique Lilac, so I gave it a go, and everything came together really nicely! So these wings will be one of the results from this outfit, but I'm not sure if they will be hers. I may make her another more-tattered set.

The painting part was really "trust the process." I used voile as one of the fabrics and a regular quilting cotton as the other. Next time, I think I will just use voile. I layered some poly organza and added some gold foil to them, sealing the foil. I finished embellishing them yesterday, so I'll have to take some photos of those later!

      Here are the wings WIP:

    25. Pretty - it's nice when a test garment comes out nicely enough to be worn.

I killed my first sewing machine making a dress for a Drag Queen friend back in the late 80s frop, a sequinned fabric.

      They're looking great!

    26. @RabbidBunnies I sewed the main seams and the hem with my machine, but after I took the pic I did the hems on the arms and neck by hand. Surprisingly it wasn't too bad, but the sequins weren't too thick, either.

@honeyedbiscuit Those wings did turn out wonderfully! A flowy outfit goes with the theme well, too, and the colors on the wings give plenty of options for what they'd go with.

    27. @JaxxCapta Ooooh…that test dress turned out beautifully!:) Wonderful fit too.

@honeyedbiscuit I love those wings! What a remarkable job you did on them…they’re truly gorgeous and I love the artistic way you applied the gold leaf.:D

@Leo Pheonix Well done indeed! She looks so cute in this. Those are wonderful fabric choices for your upcoming efforts too. Way to go.:thumbup

    28. @Teddy - thank you very much!

@JaxxCapta - thank you! I love the progress you're making on your outfit for your MDR. What other accessories are you looking to make?

@PoeticSoul - thank you for the kind words! Antique Lilac's work is so beautiful, and I'm grateful for her guides. Her work is such an inspiration! How is your project going? What other elements are you looking to add? I think the embellishments are the best part!

    29. I wholeheartedly agree…adding the embellishments is definitely the best part.:) This month’s project gave me plenty of opportunity for exactly that, and I had so much fun doing it.

And the best part is I’m finally done with both my apron dresses for this round (worn over the blouse, skirt and long bloomers from last month’s round as planned.) I was truly happy with how this all turned out because I think she looks just like she walked out of a fairytale.

    30. @PoeticSoul Both apron dresses look so good on her! Love how you used all the decorative odds and ends!

    31. @PoeticSoul These dresses are so pretty!! It really looks as if they cam straight from a fairy tail! You girl looks so sweet in them! :daisy

    32. I’m loving all the photos posted! :D Great job everyone! :aheartbea

As for me, uggggh I have been wanting to join in as I love the theme, but I’ve been busy with other projects. Now that it’s cold I’ve been turbo knitting lol But I really want to make something for this round. I’m thinking of making a fluffy, pretty dress for Susu. Something Barbie fairytale princess, like the older movies. I have some fabric in mind, lots of teal colored tulle mainly :evilplot: I have a picture that I drew, but that’s all I’ve done so far :?

    33. @PoeticSoul Wow!! The embellishments absolutely brought those dresses to life. Great work! They look so dreamy!

@lully.lullers The concept art looks great! I myself plan on doing a lot of catch up sewing when I am off Thanksgiving week, and we should see some more "wintery" weather soon. I started progressing on the sewing part, but after sewing something wrong on fabric I dyed, I had to step away lol. I'll get back to it soon.

    34. Yay! They both look lovely.

      Sounds like a plan.

      Teddy

    35. I had a burst of energy to sew today! I completed the whole dress :dance Well, completed is kind of a stretch lol it’s wearable and it’s pretty, but it is rough! I felt like I was more so sculpting with fabric, than sewing by how I ended up constructing it :sweat I was fighting it to look presentable lol Somehow I got the dress to lay pretty nice, for the mess that it is, and overall I like it! I’ll have to take some pictures in the daylight. And I’m still unsure what to do about her shoes. I don’t have any that go well with her outfit, that fit her. So I may attempt to make some simple sandals. Or make her barefoot lol. It’s okay she’s a fairy princess. Maybe fairies don’t wear shoes? ;)

In progress. I did a gathered skirt, though a half circle skirt would have been better. I just didn’t have enough of this leftover fabric to make one.

    36. It looks great - I wouldn't know it was rough without you telling us. I love the layers of ruffles!

Good luck sorting the shoes (though, barefoot sounds right for a fairy too)

      Teddy

    37. Wow! That turned out utterly gorgeous!:D And fairies not wearing shoes is the way I roll…as in almost nobody wears shoes in my enchanted forest realm. Makes my life a whole lot easier.

      • x 1
    38. Oof, life continues to life, so I haven't been able to get the energy to do as much sewing as I would have liked. I've got a couple of pieces cut out for the first layer of robe, but we'll see how the actual sewing goes... I'm using some double gauze and I'm not sure it will be as fancy as I'd like it to be, so if it turns out alright it may end up going to my other doll because he is not as picky about clothes, lol

    39. Took a huge detour on the sewing portion to focus on the accessories. I ended up finishing my top and a leather waist cincher, but that was plagued with so many missteps that photos and a write up will be due later -- probably when I fully finish the outfit.

In the mean time, I watched some basket making videos on YouTube and made this basket yesterday! This is my first attempt at completing a basket, so I am super pleased. The videos by Natsucraftofpaper were incredibly helpful: https://www.youtube.com/@natsucraftofpaper/videos

      Here's the finished basket:

Here's the basket filled with foraged finds:

These are the little potions I made:

The last one was excess from one of the potions from Miniverse, so it doesn't quite fit. I think I may try to make another one. The one on the left is filled with purple-colored mosses, and the one in the center has a bit of moss + mother of pearl shell from a nail art kit. The labels were made using waxed cord and garbage lol. Clearer photos of them can be found on my Instagram of the bottles. :)

    40. Wow that's the first time you've made a basket?! It looks so neat and professional!

      • x 1
    41. Thank you! And yes! I just watched YouTube videos from the channel I linked. There are quite a few flaws with finishing, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to finish it so played around with the end pieces a bit so they got a bit raggedy. But it is okay with me! Next baskets will hopefully be better. I am happy I got to try something new too!

    42. @honeyedbiscuit Oh my, that’s utterly amazing! I love the pattern on that basket…and it looks so professional too. And those tiny bottles are absolutely wonderful. All of this adds so much character to any doll. Wonderful accessories!:D
