How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. This month we’re indulging in whimsical thoughts of Fairytales (and whatever that means to you.) Is your doll’s fairytale a classical one…or a spooky one…or simply a fanciful dream of love on the beach (like one of those old beach blanket movies.) The possibilities are truly endless and can be fantasy (as in my elf or ogre needs a new outfit) or fanciful (as in I’ve been dying to make a romantic poet’s shirt for my doll’s romp in the park.) Whatever flights of fancy spurs your creativity, feel free to indulge in them here. Week 1: 6/1-6/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 6/8 to 6/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 616 to the end of June * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! Coming rounds: [ Round 136 ] Leftovers and Recycling [ Round 137 ] Vintage and Retro [ Round 138 ] Monochrome [ Round 139 ] Theater/Masquerade [ Round 140 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 141 ] Pick a Decade [ Round 142 ] Working with Scraps [ Round 143 ] Bohemian [ Round 144 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 145 ] Basics [ Round 146 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 147 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 148 ] The Alternative Styles: Emo/Goth/Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics) [ Round 149 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 150 ] Designer’s Choice! [ Round 151 ] Seasonal [ Round 152 ] Fairytale
Oh this round looks so great ! I think I have a doll who can fit in. Will try to find time to sew for her. ^^
If I get the time, I should really join in this round to finish the Twelve Dancing Princesses outfits I got wearable but never actually finished back in 2011. I've worked on themhere and there, and made the dress I didn't even get started at the time (that princess wore a borrowed outfit for the fairytale themed meet that prompted the sewing frenzy)... Oh poop! I just remembered of another complication : I no longer have one of the princesses, and her gown went with her when she moved on. I have plenty of other girls, now, who could step in to make up the numbers but that would mean startng an entirely new gown... ... {sigh!} Perhaps I'll just make a simple something for Willowbark, my Kaye Wiggs Sage wood nymph instead..... Teddy
@Teddy A wood nymph sounds adorable, but ah yeah I feel you on needing to finish things up. Oh the projects waiting for their turn... I am, yet again, thinking of making a lolita dress So many of the themes have lined up just right for lots of lolita! What can I say! A few months back I got a grab bag of quilting cotton leftovers, my favorite. One of the fabrics was, befitting the theme, a cute Alice in Wonderland fabric that I think would make a great lolita dress. I also pulled out a striped fabric with roses I think would go with it; maybe an overskirt and underskirt combo? Now, I also got an email that one of my two incoming dolls (For the year! I cry, For the year! I swear it!) is on her way home this week. Supposedly she's here in a few days, but in reality... ehh, I hope I get her by Saturday, with all the business around signatures. Anyhow, the spot she's slotted into the doll fam so far is, fittingly, as Clover's girlfriend! Happy Pride, girlies, maybe I'll even figure out a name for the incoming doll this month. But I think it would be cute to make her a matching set of overalls. Here's Clover with the Alice in Wonderland and striped fabric:
So I had a rather large arrival last month, and he's in need of some clothes! (Please forgive the messy background, but I snapped this quick cell phone pic to compare the new boy to my Dollfie Dream. He BEEG.) I have a running theme of stars and space among my resins, so I'm planning for him to have a space-themed wardrobe, but I still have to figure out what that's going to look like. I do have some mesh fabric with stars and moons embroidered on it that I hope to incorporate in some way!
I'm agreeing with @JaxxCapta that this is a great round for more lolita dresses I think I'll finally kick off my doll-sized Chii cosplay plans - I'm hoping to sew something most of my crew can wear but I'll probably fit it to Asa first. I know I'll go off plan very fast but I'll try to at least be inspired by this dress as I really like the shorter front-longer back situation. Good luck with sewing everyone!
@cobaltconduct Oh my ! Asa is so cute (I have a sist too ^^) ! And I love your project. ^^ Can't wait to see the result ! So, here is Lilim. She is my very first BJD back in 2009. And I still have and love her. ^^ But for now, as I reforged her story, she really needs some new clothes. :/ (and a mass restring but don't tell anyone XD) She is a Nekomata so I think I will go on an asian style for her. I don't really have an idea for that but I dont want traditional clothes, maybe some things more "fantasy asian underground". So I will think about that. If you have some ideas, feel free to tell.
I have some other stuff I have to do, but if all goes well I will be able to join in a bit later. I would love to get some basics for my wonderful Maracreatures Ramunder. He is still in nothing but his shift and coat, poor thing. (And those alone look so much like a night shirt and dressing gown that I am tempted to make him a night cap and a pair of slippers.) I want to make him a basic tunic and I have the prefect fabric for it ready. So perhaps I will at least make a start on that.
I love this theme, and I have a number of ideas and doll that could work with it. I will think strongly of joining this round.
I really want to join this round, despite my lack of progress in others I've joined, but the dolls that I'd sew for are waiting for bodies. Not very conducive to accurate fits.
I got started by making my boy a spacey shirt! I'm planning to make him some high-waisted pants next.
That shirt looks dreamy @kaschan502 ! I found some fitting fabric in the fabric store cuttings pile yesterday (yet another round of sewing difficult fabric nooooo) - it is very pink. Spoiler I also got started on drafting the bodice pattern on Asa
I was going to sit this round out as the theme doesn't inspire me can you believe (obvs lack of imagination there!) Daisy is just not a fairytale kind of gal though BUT I've now got an incoming 'off topic' doll (Bon Bon Galaxy Philly - bunny anthro) so I need to make her some clothes & you can hardly get more fantasy than an anthro, so that's inspiring me! I'm thinking I won't be able to post pics here though so I shall be sewing in the background and admiring everyone else's work - Starting with that lovely top @kaschan502
@elve I've sewed here for some off-topic dolls. You can post your progress and the result but not on your doll. It's what I did.
I made a pair of pants for my boy yesterday! The hooks and eyes in the front are slightly more visible than I would like, but overall I'm not too bothered by it. I clearly have 2 gears when it comes to doll sewing- it's either MAKE ALL THE THINGS IN A WEEK or eeeeeeh, I might sew something this month maybe?
@kaschan502 I agree…a very cool outfit indeed! And it looks divinely comfortable too. I’m really loving the fabrics you’ve chosen.
@kaschan502 - I love the outfit! The colours mix and match so we'll and the yellow pants seem like a very comfy cut! I somehow decided to sew the bodice by hand because it felt like a nice and meditative thing to do but in reality, the fabric is difficult and my handsewing kind of sloppy so... I think I'll add more ribbon to hide imperfections. Edit: adding it here so I don't make a double post. I made the skirt! It is terrible when looked up close! I have decided to accept my defeat with this fabric, though, and it'll hold together enough for one photoshoot so it just is what it is I guess
@kaschan502 That is quite the big boy, wow. I love the shirt and pants though; the orange in the pants goes fantastically with the moons in the shirt. @cobaltconduct I feel you on the slippery fabric hell but ooh that's so cute. I love the ruffles on the top of the skirt. Cattleya arrived this week, and I managed to get some overalls done up. Roughly. I've been working on them in the morning before the Concerta kicks in, and uh... I think it's pretty clear. But she is now clothed! I'll have to watch out with making bottoms for her, because man does she have thick and curvy thighs. Also she kind of looks like a gnome or something next to Clover, with the difference in their proportions! I think I'm going to call her Nawra. EDIT: oh wow, the photo immediately broke. that's fast.
@cobaltconduct I’m sorry that the fabric has caused you a bit of woe, but oh my goodness what a delightful pattern for both these pieces! I do love the look. @JaxxCapta Ooooh, look how cute they are together! And their outfits look so good together too. This definitely looks like a fairytale in the making.
I love seeing what everyone's made so far, and I'm excited to see more! @kaschan502 's pants are so impressive! They look very comfortable yet stylish~ @cobaltconduct I feel the pain of working with that fabric by just looking at it- you've dealt with it valiantly! I hope for your sanity that you used fray check @JaxxCapta congrats on your new girl! Clover and Nawra make an adorable pair, I'm excited to see them in matching cutesy outfits! My turn! A week's worth of progress (=start to finish thanks to hyperfocus) in one post, because I didn't feel like editing my progress photos, so posting earlier was out of the question So last month one of my grails, Dollmore illua Lillia moved here, and she really needed clothes! (+a wig, a faceup, eyes and a name, none of which she has as of making this post) I did some planning, and settled on a sweet, pastoral, kind of cottagecore/lolita look, (which seems to be the direction most of my dolls go, it's unintentional I swear!) a flowy dress from a very thin and soft, blue/white striped cotton(blend?) fabric. I made her underwear late last month; bloomers and a corset top thingy, but then I got distracted with other things and she had to wait a few weeks for more clothes. Last weekend after checking this round's theme I figured I'd finally make her dress, because I guess the idyllic countryside sweetheart look is very much a fairytale vibe. Because poor Lillia's head was waiting for her faceup, I took the starting photo without it I made the patterns with barely any measuring, kind of just eyeballing it, and honestly the whole dress making process ended up being a breeze! Maybe the sewing stars were aligned for me that day. It also helps that I'm used to sewing for much, much smaller dolls than Lillia,- though I shouldn't get used to sewing for her, I need to keep it as a rare treat for successfully sewing for my crew of tinies. Can't get too comfortable Anyway! The dress is very simple, three rectangles plus sleeves. I folded the top part in a weird way, kind of a Z shape, to create a channel for the waist elastic, because I didn't realize I could just sew a strip of fabric onto the inside of the dress to do that way to overcomplicate things, lol. The dress part rectangles I cut to be 30% wider than the rectangle above each, and just gathered to match. In hindsight I should've gone even wider, maybe 50% wider, to increase the amount of poof and ruffle. Spoiler: Progress photos I almost finished the dress in one sitting, but managed to draw myself away from the sewing machine for a few days to work on Lillia's face up. Finishing touches were; an elastic for the neck hole (/shoulder hole???), wrangling a ribbon through the sleeves, and a cotton lace for the hem. I also made a pair of stockings for Lillia to wear under her bloomers, because her hip joints kept trying to eat them, rude. I waited until I finished her faceup to have a photoshoot of the finished dress. I was too excited to show you guys to wait until I'd made her a wig and proper eyes, so she was wearing a stylish scarf to hide her bald noggin and some not-so-well-done practice eyes I'd made a while back. Spoiler: More pictures! Presenting the dress also proudly bald headed, to show better how the dress looks. (+she is stunning even bald, so) Edit: I forgot to mention, but I finished ALL of the seams in that dress. Every single seam is zigzagged, so it looks neat even on the inside, and I am very proud of that detail that nobody else will ever get to see
@Ankka Oh wow, Lillia looks fantastic! The fabric drapes nicely, and the ribbons and the trim are perfect details. And she is adorable even bald. Though hah, the first photo with her head missing and the tape measure around her neck is a mood. Thanks to the power of actually doing things when my meds are in effect, I went ham and now Clover has her matching dress. I originally wanted the Alice fabric overskirt to be attached, but realized I didn't know how I wanted the rest of the dress to look - whether it would be the Alice fabric or the floral one. So I made the dress entirely with the floral fabric and white accents, then made a separate overskirt with the Alice fabric. Gotta love options! I'd love to put some tiny white buttons on the front, but the only sufficiently tiny buttons I have are black. Ah well.
@Ankka - I refuse to learn and get fray check so I have been using a lighter to seal the edges instead. It is *not* working very well Your dress looks so nice and breezy, though! Gotta ride the hyperfocus wave while it's there! @JaxxCapta - they are adorable in their matching outfits! I do agree that some small light buttons would be very cute on both dolls :3 I am nearing the finish line! I just have to wait for the Chii ears to dry so I can sand and paint them. The dress also got a big bow for the back.
Ugh! I stopped receiving notification (again!) so missed a whole bunch of posts I just scrolled through to catch up and it seems we've got a lot of fun projects in the works for this round - Yay! Teddy
@Ankka That dress is so lovely on your girl! The scale of those stripes is perfect, and the color is so sweet for this kind of look. Wonderful @JaxxCapta I love their look! What a really great pair they make. And Clover’s dress fabric is so pretty. The alice print overskirt is a brilliant idea to give her wardrobe extra options. @cobaltconduct Chii!!! My favorite manga of all time! Those ears are epic…well done!
Thank you all for the kind words about Scuti's outfit! I wanted to add a little something to give it an extra fantasy-esque vibe, but didn't want to cover up the silhouette that I already had going, so I decided to make a sort of high-low cape for him! (Apologies for the different lighting- I was using natural light, and some clouds were passing overhead in the second pic.) I used a pink crepe-back satin (the main part of the cape is the crepe side, and the collar is the shiny side), and lined it with some tulle that's embroidered with moons and stars! I also braided some white embroidery thread to make the trim and attachment at the top. I'm kicking around the idea of adding some embroidery to the cape and possibly making an embroidered belt, but for now I'm happy with his look!
The cape is a great addition! I really like the whole colour scheme you have going on with Scuti @kaschan502 ! The wig and clothes are a very good combo. The ears have dried so Chii is done! It's not quality work from any end but I've never really done cosplay so it's been a nice thing to try out! I ended up changing the outfit a little from the actual drawings and the wig is obviously the wrong colour but hey. Asa is made from very old second hand parts and the body was a rescue project in itself so it feels accurate with the whole mystery curbside persacom thing
So many lovely projects alrerady! Things have calmed down a bit over here and I have some time for sewing just for fun again. So I am jumping in late with a projects that I likely won't be able to finish in what is left of the month, but at least is very much on theme and something I would have been starting sooner or later anyway. This is Aldhissla and he needs clothes! The plan is to make him a tunic. The fabric he holds in his lap is a blue-gray wool that I think will work nicely. The design is a bit vague, though. Something fairly simple and timeless, but I want to have at least some embroidery on it and I have to figure out a way to deal with his huge hands. So perhaps sleeves gatered to wide decorative cuffs that can be buttoned closed, or something. I'll figure it out.
Man's everyone's projects look great so far, double so the finished ones. I look forward to seeing the troll getting a tunic. I might join late and make either a tunic or a toga, for a mnf unicorn doll I am working on. We will see what actually happens though.
@cobaltconduct The entire thing has come together so wonderfully…and those persacom ears are epic! @Lillith Oh…I was hoping to see your awesome Aldhissla this month. He’s truly amazing and I can’t wait to see what you make for him.
@Tippetarius and @PoeticSoul Thank you both for your kind words! I've made a rough sketch of my current plan. This may change along the way, but it's a starting point.
I made a sketch too. I searched and found some fabrics in my stock so I will go with that and see if I can make a good thing. ^^ I really don't know if I will be able to finish this project this month. But I have a begining and it's better than nothing for me at the time. ^^'
Thanks. ^^ I'm very tired these times so I go slowly. But Lilim really needs good clothes. So I hope I will be able to sew something good for her. =) I know me, I will probably change some things in my final project. XD But the drawing is good base.
Well unicorn's legs are here, so lets see if I can get a toga or tunic made in the next for days.. Or a flower crown I don't know he needs something to wear.
Sounds doable, if you keep the design simple. I've cut all the pieces for the troll tunic today and I've started embroidering the collar and cuffs.
A WIP of the embroidery. In the hoop is the start of cuffs and collar and the smock is for the sleeve head.
A small WIP update on the embrodiery on the cuffs and collar. I've also sewn most of the main parts of the tunic together, but there is still some some smocking or pleating (I am still working on the exact design) to make the main parts fit into the collar and I have to figure out what to use for buttons. I probably won't be done within the deadline for this months theme, but I may get pretty close.
I know I'm late, but I wanted to share how far I got. Still a lot to do, but at least this will give you an idea of where I'm going with it. Left to do is front closure and he bottom hem, including a simplified version of the collar and cuff embroidery. Here are colse ups on some of the details. Collar: Cuff: Smock at the top of the sleeve:
Oh my goodness, @Lillith he looks so wonderful in this! I truly celebrate your embroidery and bead work. Your details are always such an inspiration and your troll is just amazing.
Thank you! I used a relatively thin jersey knit for the top, and the bottoms were made from some fabric I've had for a few years, so to be honest I don't quite remember what it was! I think the closest would be a ponte knit or something similar!
It's hard to tell in your picture but have you sewn down both ends of the hooks or just the end with the loops on? That's usually the problem when hooks sit more visibly like this - many people aren't aware that both ends of the hook need to be sewn to the fabric, like this example: https://i.shgcdn.com/b296dfbb-bdc4-...t/auto/-/preview/3000x3000/-/quality/lighter/ Teddy
I actually did! It's just a little snug in the front, so it pulls more than I would like, and I don't love the idea of top-stitching it to keep the lining from getting tugged. It's fine the way it is for now though, so I'm not too worried about it!
