I hope you hit upon a combination that gives the effect you're after. I'd say that's a good sign of success. Teddy
Wow! This looks absolutely amazing, it doesn't look to tight either. I love the trim and how it holds shut with those button, it looks like incredibly fancy button holes.
Right, so now that I have that caplet all done (and truthfully I didn't think I would manage to finish it, I do have a habit of leaving projects half finished when something else catches my eye, I am going to start looking at making a dress for the outfit and possibly after that a simple little apron to go on top. I've decided to use Lomi's Playgrounds Minifee fantasy dress for this one, tutorial link here: I've made a little adjustment to the pattern in that I will not be using the lower part of the sleeve and have instead made the upper sleeve pattern longer to fit the full length of my dolls arm. I really want to use a brown fabric for this dress but I have the problem of having no brown fabric big enough. Resisting the urge to buy more brown fabric as I have a far too big stash of fabric already, I am going to try dying some fabric. I was given a tie dye kit for Christmas last year, which has a sort of pale brown dye, so I've made some swatches of some white and beige fabrics to test. At the moment, it looks like the beige fabric and brown dye is the better option as the white fabric looks like it is turning slightly red. I'll have to look at it in the morning as it needs to set for 8 hours, so I guess I will see what its like tomorrow and make my choice then.
The fiber is only one part of it. For example, many pure wool fabrics have a lot of spring to them and require a bit of work to make them behave well in small scale. To make another example, the blue fabric I used for the embroidered dress is a very cheap polyester/cotton blend and that drapes rather nicely in doll scale once it has been handeled a bit, the fibres themselves seem to have very little resitance to anything and the fabric just colpases in on itself. Not good if used for a structural layer, but great for soft stuff that needs low bulk and nice drape. The fibres are slippery and the weave is loose, so there is a lot of movement in there. The fact that you could press pleats into your fabric shows that is can take a bit of shaping, regardless of the fiber content. If I were you I'd probably just keep handeling it and it will get better with wear.
That's a good point. Plus, of course, if you need to use it for something more structured, you could always use a more stable interlining or lining behind it. Teddy
Absolutely. In fact, the ball gown worn by the doll in my profile picture is made from this very fabric and the bodice is lined with cotton, interlined with linen and has additional padding in the front. There might be some fusible interface in there as well, It's been a long time since I made it.
Oh, just definitely, I think I'm going to wash it at least 3 times to be completely sure, but if it does stain it won't be a huge issue, I'll probably use it as an excuse to dye her. She's already quite prone to getting random black marks on her anyway.
Good luck with the tulle, it looks amazing when it's used but it is such a pain to sew sometimes. Two double layers would probably be the easier option to sew together.
I don't think it's too much - I dyed my own hair green a few years ago. Love the light from the window making the skirt glow. Teddy
@cakie99 That really looks good…very natural. I think you did an excellent job taming that fabric into submission and now you have a wonderful pattern for future endeavors too. well done! @JennyM I personally love that wig…she is a forest fairy after all. Your outfit for her is fabulous. I love all the layers and colors and textures you used. It’s very creative. As for me, I managed to get my basic fabric pieces sewn together and the pattern for Poetta’s robe cut. Now I get to start working on the story elements with “slow stitching”. That’s the fun part!
Some really incredible work as usual!! I've made some cuts and did some shaping before I start pinning for a fit test, but I'm taking it easy on this one. Working on faceups too, so I'm planning to sew when it's too cold to spray sealant and paint as fast as I can when it warms up enough in between cold snaps.
I am glad you like it, the variation of textures and colors was one of my goals for this round. Slow stitching was new for me, had to look it up. Sounds interesting and you make lovely outfits using it. @Lillith , @Teddy Thanks!
Wonderful! It'll be great to see what you do with it. I am working on an embroidered belt for my little lady. For the crown, I think I have decided on a polymer clay flower crown. It won't be very durable, but it will give me a lot of freedom with the design and I can make the flowers as small as I like.
My very slow progress so far. This is the first sewing I’ve done since my son was born Now that he’s out of the newborn stage, I’m able to find small windows for crafting! I finished the underskirt tutu for my girl. It was easy, just gathered super tight. I’m going to tie it closed with a ribbon. I’m just excited to finally share something lol
@lully.lullers That’s so cute! I swear nothing says “fairytale” like a sweet tulle skirt! Especially when it’s on an adorable Fairyland realfee (which are really fairytale personified, if you ask me.)
After some trial and error with dye, this is the color I settled on for the dress! I was also able to attach the tulle to the dress so it’s all one piece now Next is decorating aka the fun part! Thank you for all the sweet comments!
Finished her outfit! I added a little more detail than previously planned, and I love it! I can’t help myself from adding lace. It’s my weakness For construction, I tacked on the ribbon sash in the front but not the back. So I can tie it in a bow to adjust fit. Then tacked on the vine & leaf ribbon and flower. I used lace trim cut in half for her sash and sleeves. Sleeves aren’t attached for better mobility I’m very pleased with this girl now! Come spring she will get a proper photo shoot amongst the wild daisies I’m proud of myself for completing this challenge. I know the design was simple and quick, but it’s been a while since I had my sewing & crafting mojo. This was just the project I needed to jumpstart my creativity
That turned out absolutely gorgeous! And nothing wrong with adding lace to everything... I hope. I have certainly been guilty of that from time to time.
@lully.lullers Oh gosh, how adorable. I love the flower chaplet she's wearing. Did you make that too?
@JennyM Thank you! Thank you Thank you! There's always room for lace! Thank you! I did It's made of this leafy wire I found in the ribbon section of Hobby Lobby, plus tiny faux flowers and ribbons.
@lully.lullers Now how cute is that!? It’s perfect for your little fairyland girl. I love the decorations and that flower headpiece is the perfect finishing touch. Well done!
@lully.lullers It' so beautiful !! Very good job, she looks so cute ! @Lillith You have gold in your hands
@Teddy Thank you! I am very happy with how it turned out. @Moonycat31 You are too kind. I swear it looks more involved than it is. @JennyM It's a combination of techniques, each not very dificult in themselves. It just takes a bit of work to put it all together. I've always had a knack for small things, it is as if I just zoom in until it works. My eyes gets tired eventually, but other than that it's no different from working in a larger scale. And I am very familliar with the medium and that helps too. Polymer clay is very well suited to this sort of thing. I'd be happy to demonstrsate some of the techniques when we next have a doll crafting day, if you'd like. It really looks more dificult than it actually is. Next part of this project is a robe/coat-thing. I've made one before (worn in the picture below) but I didn't get the drape quite right and it's too plain for this outfit so I'm making a new one. This one will be pink with a white lining. I think I will be using similar decorations to those on the dress, but we'll see how it evolves. I intend to just let it develope as I go and I don't have much of a plan going in, other than that I want it to fit in with the rest of the outfit.
This turned out so stellar! You truly did an amazing job on it. I can’t wait to see what you do with the robe. This is turning out to be a very exciting outfit indeed!
I sewed a skirt for me with my sewing machine today. And... I was so tired that I sewed my finger... =_=' Well, I think I have to pass for this month again. :/
That's my worst fear I've jabbed my finger with a pin pretty bad and that already hurt enough! Still have a prick mark scar I hope you heal quickly!
Oh bad luck! I hope you're not too badly damaged, and that it heals quickly. I've had many a sewing room injury over the years. I think the worst was dropping a rotary cutter, blade first, onto my bare foot. Blood everywhere and a completely ruined sewing project. Teddy
@lully.lullers @Teddy Thanks. It's not too damaged, mre blood than pain, but it hurts a little bit. ^^' So it's difficult for me to sew. :/
Oh you poor dear…a sewing injury that keeps you from sewing? Now that’s the worst! Hope it heals quickly.
Thanks. I hope it will be better soon. Fortunately, it's not very severe, I don't need t go to the hospital. But welle, it's handicapping. :/
So, after all that dying of test fabric, I've decided that I don't really like the colours it turned out, it just doesn't quite match what i want. So I've tried making the dress with just the regular fabric. I don't particularly like the fit of this dress very well, its not bad but It just doesn't fit what I want for the outfit. I think that I am going to just dye this dress anyway and try to use it for a different project. So instead, I'm going to make a plain white dress using a different pattern which would hopefully turn out in a better way. So, now I need to wait for the fray check to dry and hopefully I will be able to sew the dress together at the weekend.
@cakie99 looking great! That's some awesome work on the finished dress, I hope you find another use for it that makes you happy with it! Good luck with the new one
It's so hard making my self actually start sewing sometimes because of this, I seem to be such a perfectionist with it and I always find some little thing that I don't like. Probably why none of my girls have full outfits I'm happy with. I think I will probably use it as an underdress for a different outfit at some point, or it will sit in the unfinished projects box.
That's a shame. Is there no chance to redeem it by altering the fit? It looks likemity has plenty of seams you could tweak to alter how it fits. Teddy
I've already adjusted the front panel in but it still doesn't seem quite right, and if I adjust it anymore it won't be able to close in the back nicely. I'll have to try and have another look at it a different time and see what can be done.
Here I come with excuses as usual, lol, the last chunk of the month really snuck up on me and I haven't made much progress due to lack of free time. I fly out on Sunday to spend some time with my partner and I won't be back until a day or two into next round. I DID find a few more little pillowcase covers like the onve I've used here, so maybe I'll put a whole outfit together with next month's upcycling theme!
Yay excuses! I'm not offering any - I just didn't get my shit together to get my other sewing commitments out of the way so I could get started on this, and probably wont beofre this roudn is over. Have a good time with your partner! Teddy
I finally got off my tookus and got some sewing done! I'll have to take pics tomorrow (it's already super late and I'm about to turn in for the night), but I just have to add closures onto a shirt for my boy Nori and it will be done
I'm in your boat Teddy, not offering excuses for not joining this great topic. Ugh, I hope to get into a forward gear soon. I'm enjoying looking at all the pretty outfits! Great work y'all
Hi There! For this challenge I am sharing a doll I did for the ResinRose costume contest from back in August, Poeticsoul gave me permission WARNING, Long post LOL The Convention theme was Fairytales and I knew just which doll to use! I had purchased a Dollzone Tarot Moon head from MissValentine here in the DOA MP! I loved her quirky look and her ears are just too cute. I hybrid her to a Doll Family H body named Xiao Chan, she is a 1/5 scale and her posing is amazing! The color match was 99%perfect! I took that as a good sign Her factory Makeup was a good start, so I just added to it. The wig is made from Tibetian Lamb and didn't turn out how I wanted it to, I wanted mass curls and it was more mass frizz LOL, tried several things to make it do what I wanted, but in the end it won and I just scouped it on to her head. Thumbelina1 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Thumbelina4 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Added a bit of green and changed her lips slightly Next came her shoes, Doll Family H Xiao Chen comes with Ballet Feet which I fell in love with, and since she would be flying, I made her little booties to fit the feet. The booties are all leather and hand-stitched, I also stained them and aged them a bit and of course added glitterrr! Thumbelina2 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Next was her corset, I wanted something that looked like a woodland fairy would wear, so it had to resemble wood! It's 6 pieces, I glued the seams down the front and back and added grommets so it laced up each side. Again, I stained, detailed, antiqued and sealed the leather. Fits her like a glove! Her wrists were wrapped in leather strips to match her booties and had tiny bells attached to the ends. Thumbelina3 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Her headpiece, I have a thing for hats and headpieces, I wanted woodland and fantasy. The headpiece is made up of a lot of Jewelry findings and chain. I glued "Earrings" to those amazing ears and charms, bells and whatever looked good to me Added bits of moss and small flowers and really loved how it turned out! Thumbelina5 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Wings! The wings are made of liquid fimo on a photopaper print of the wing design then baked, peal them off the paper and TA DAHHH Wings! I added wire along the upper edges so I could shape them a bit, then glued them together with bits of moss and flowers. There is a Magnet hot glued to her back and also to the wings so they are removable and easy to pack up and carry. Thumbelina6 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Her dress is scraps of an off-white mesh I had in my stash, I didn't want her dress to be structured, shes a woodland fairy! I used a fabric paint in a moss color and squished it into the fabric. It was totally an experiment, but it worked great! Resinrose display pictures Thumbelina8 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Thumbelina7 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr her "Orb" is a brass bead held on with eye putty, her dragon is a 3d Resin print The prize was a Mystic Kids Boy/ Francis and we won! He's so cute and was my first boy doll! Thumbelina was excited to welcome him Thumbelina9 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr and Now my little Fairy lives in my Diningroom. She holds my heart Thumbelina10 by Kimms.Kouture, on Flickr Hope you enjoyed our adventure!
@Kimmera And what an exciting sewing and crafting adventure it was! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! I love seeing an outfit so thoroughly thought out and wrought with great creativity, using so many differing supplies and textures. She is certainly is every inch a woodland fairy. Thank you for the inspiration!
So this sassy lad, as dolls tend to do, basically rejected the first shirt I made for him. I ended up making a second shirt with a long vest/coat to go over it, and finishing it with a belt I made last year. Here's the shirt, made from a super-soft brushed polyester fabric with some stretch to it. With the vest and belt. The vest is made from a cotton twill fabric, and I finished the edges with bias tape instead of lining it to reduce bulk. From another angle that shows off the belt a little better. The belt is made from a beautifully hand-embroidered strip of fabric that was gifted to me with a bunch of trims, the paillete trim came from my stash, and the beaded tassel was salvaged off a formal dress we altered at my job. (The owner wanted the tassels removed, so I decided to put them to good use. )
