Wearables Sewing Project Evening wear/ Haute courte [ Round 39 ]

Jan 1, 2016

    1. Realmling your little tomato girl is in hanbok! Love it :D

I've sewn my top together & need to line it now - then to the chima (skirt)...

    2. Thanks! That one was so perfect with the wig I couldn't resist. My other girl is in a silver and pastel one.

I have a feeling I'm going to have a whole new respect for my mother and all the tutus she made for my dance recitals... first tulle skirt poofer experiment is under way.

    3. I started on my choli top using a pattern of my own design. Pink brocade (definitely used FrayCheck) and a white cotton lining.

Needs some beadwork and completion of the seams tomorrow

    5. wonderful projects everyone - I'm thrilled to see so many people joining in this round, such beautiful inspiration pics and fantastic work-in-progress :D

      I've still not started of course - I think I'm a last-minute adrenalin-junkie :XD:

ETA - well this is all the fabric I can scrape together from my meagre stash - still on a fabric-purchasing ban as I am....

    6. A leopard print, what fun!!

    7. Beading is nothing compared to that embroidery you're doing, @flowergirl. I'm amazed by people who can embroider.

@MoomaBJD, I love that pink brocade!

The back of the dress I'm working on has beadwork too, but I'm afraid I can't take credit for it. I'm using materials salvaged from a prom dress a friend found in a box of freebies at a thrift shop. There were stains on the front and the beading on the back was torn to pieces, missing a ton of beads. I pulled beads off the stained and unusable part of the front to repair it, and it's looking pretty good with repairs complete. ^^ Here's a pic from before I finished the bodice beading.

I salvaged the zipper from the dress to use in the back and it was a little damaged, so the back doesn't line up perfectly, but it's close. Shouldn't matter, her hair will cover it anyway. Just a little finishing work left to do on the dress, then it's time for the stole.

    8. My goodness, look away for five minutes (well, few days anyway) and this thread gets all the talent! Looking brilliant guys, I'm absolutely loving everyone's fabric choices and excellent work. @Myuuchan that dress is coming together gorgeously, and that's such clever use of pre-existing decoration. I've got a few old beaded items, I might have to dig them out for doll stuff after this outfit is finished. I'll post pictures tomorrow if the weather and camera both cooperate! Hope everyone has a lovely evening :)

    9. Wow...such talent and beauty being created in this thread!:D It's a sheer delight to come here and see so many fresh ideas, facinating fabrics, stunning beadwork and embroidery! As for me, I've finished my girl's bloomers and cage crinoline. Next, it's on to the dress itself.:)

    10. @PoeticSoul please post pictures! I am so eager to see the progress you've made!

@Realmling I love your tomato pattern and theme!! I love leaves and I'm especially excited to see how you do the top of her dress! It's one of the kinds of ideas I love but can't get my brain to figure out.

@MoomaBJD it's so very pretty!!! I've thought of doing that kind of thing and you're motivating me to do it!

I made some shoes for Moya. I have very limited success with shoes and I tried out making clay soles and its turned out ok. I also mixed my own paint but made it darker on the second coat. I did this to make it more closely match the ribbon I used to hide the gap.

I used cardboard for the inside sole and glued some pink fabric to it. I wrapped Moya's feet in plastic bag and then used tape to hold the fabric in place until I could glue it on the inside.

      And here's the shoe now!

The left one is a bit lose but I am planning on decorating them more and hopefully I can get it to fit right so it doesn't keep falling off. I also finished hemming the skirt and I put a light green ribbon on it.

    11. Thank you!!

I love your little pink shoes. They are adorable!!

I completed the choli top - the beading is done and the seams are finished. It fastens with a snap in the back.
      Now...on to other things ;)

    12. MayBee25, those shoes are darling! you've done some excellent work there. I've never made shoes before (too scared) so I'm highly impressed.:)

MoomaBJD, that choli is beautiful. I've always loved Indian fashion and can't wait to see the rest of this outfit come together.

And here's some photos of my bloomers and cage crinoline. (Photobucket wouldn't cooperate with me yesterday, but it appears to be working fine today.):sweat

    13. @MayBee25 Thanks!

@everybody else - everything looks so awesome!

I didn't get a whole lot done this weekend (someone who shall remain nameless really really needs to get her crafty room cleaned and organized...) but I did get the skirt inner poof done. Still mulling over what I want to do with the bodice...had a few ideas over the weekend and need to just make up my mind. I did finally manage to track down where I'd stashed my pins this morning before work so I can fiddle with the skirt fabric covering now.

    14. Started the lehenga/skirt today. Its basically just a shell right now (and held on by rubber bands! HAHAHA), but I'm really pleased with it. Its probably going to take most of this week to get the beading done, but I think the result will be worth it (fingers crossed anyway).

    15. @Realmling, your tomato girl is awesome. Her wig is cute, and her bubble petticoat is perfectly ripe. Can't wait to see what's next.

@PoeticSoul, the cage crinoline looks amazing, and so do the bloomers. Just lovely.

@flowergirl, the embroidery on your corset turned out beautiful, as did the handmade eyelets and bias binding. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your outfit.

@MayBee25, I love your skirt, and I am looking forward to seeing how you incorporate the mesh fabric. I am sure it will be stunning.

@Haruhi, I love the furs you have selected for your outfit, especially the textured black one. It looks like doll scale Persian lamb.

@greg_kagawa, looking forward to seeing your Jackie O./Chanel -inspired couture!

@Leo Pheonix, I hope you are able to post your photos soon!

@Myuuchan, your gown is stunning! I love the hand beaded bodice, and it was smart to reuse the beading from the rest of the gown. There's hours and hours of handwork there.

@Kyarwon, I love your fabric selection, particularly the grey linen. Looking forward to your design.

@SteamWitch, the lace you dyed looks amazing. Glad you now have the time to join. I am certain you will knock our socks off.

@skumring, I can't wait to see your gold lame gown. I will be interested to see the construction details as you juxtapose a fluid fabric with a sculptural bodice.

@MoomaBJD, your slippers and lehenga choli are beautiful! I love the beading you did to finish the top.

@urbanizer, looking forward to your design.

@elve, I love your color combination, and the red fringed fabric on the left is to die for. Can't wait to see your design.

@Teleri, Zera's under Hanbok looks great. What do you have planned for the outer layer?

As for me, I started on my embroidery last weekend, outlined everything in chain stitch in gold, and stitched on a fair amount of bugle beads. Then I decided the beads looked too heavy and the chain stitches too fat, so I looked around for something thinner on ebay. I found some size 24/0 maco beads, which arrived midweek. I spent a good amount of time this 3 day weekend embroidering, but I'm only 2/3 done with the first applique. I'll post something tomorrow, once it's bright enough to take photos.

    16. Oh my gosh! @sakuraharu ! I was thinking about you today and trying to figure out the most polite way to ask to see what you've been doing. I over thought it and didn't do anything so I'm thrilled to see an update from you! I am very excited and you took on a huge project!

@MoomaBJD I like that you're using rubber bands. that's the kind of thing I'd do so I feel affirmed. And the skirt is starting to look amazing! I love being able to see projects coming together!

@PoeticSoul I'm very happy with how its coming along!! You did a great job with the bloomers! And I love how you attached the cage to her and the little lace at the bottom. Was that what you were planning or did the cage end up being too short and you had a moment of brilliance to make it work?

@Realmling its a tomato bubble!! :love

    17. Progress finally! Dress number one is on the way to being finished. It's just a circle dress, but I've completed the bottom hem and selected the ribbon for the waist. Just need to hem the neckline and armholes, sew some snaps into the back, and attach a lace trim.

    19. Realmling, that tomato bubble skirt is so cute...it really brought a smile to my face! I love the way you're taking the tomato theme and running with it in such a creative way...it's so fun and artistic!:D

MoomaBJD, your fabrics and beads are so unbelievably beautiful! I admire your work so much...this outfit is turning out spectacular and is truly inspiring. I'm finding myself quite drawn to this fashion style and I am now strongly considering it for a doll I currently have on layaway. Thanks for the inspiration!

Aarilyn, that is such a perfect style for your PongPong. It looks so cute on her with that circle skirt form. Excellent choice!

:sweat Well, it was a couple of issues really...and the length of the cage was one of them certainly, but it seemed unbalanced with the metal decoration around the top and not the bottom. And then I wanted to hammer home the fact that this was a form of proper Victorian underpinnings, so I wanted it to resemble that as much as possible, hence the lacy details.

    20. Thank you everyone! Tilly was born because my first Luts girl refused to entertain the idea of wearing a tomato wig ... and so I naturally had to get a doll just for that purpose. I think I know how I want to do a viney look with the bodice, I just need to remember where my roll of off white tulle is that matches her resin the best.

@MoomaBJD Love the fabric & wow!! on all the beading. I can do all sorts of beady stuff for jewelry, but I become oddly lazy and clumsy when applying it to clothes.

@Aarilyn She looks so cute! Can't want to see it all trimmed out.

    21. Looking good everyone!

Progress pics at last, we've got some decent sunshine so my camera can function ^^ So this is the jacket I am making to go over the embroidered corset. The photos are taken over a plain one for now, as I was a bit rushed this morning taking them and didn't want the hassle of changing them over. (I apologise for the headless body, Millie is off getting a new face-up!)

First, I made some semi circles in the silk, layered and pleated to make ruffles for the sleeves:

With the remaining semi circular cut-offs I made a collar by folding them in half, stitching them together end to end and then stitching pleats:

      Then folding in half widthways:

I then assembled both onto a pattern I already have for the bodice. I forgot to take progress pictures, or detailed interior shots, but the jacket is fully lined (in the sleeves too), and will have a ruffle added at the waist when I have the time to do so:

      [IMG] [IMG]

Next to do is add corresponding snaps to the embroidered corset (I will also make decorative bows attached to snaps to put on when the corset is worn by itself so there are no ugly snaps showing!), add the waist ruffle, and make an underskirt for the ensemble. It's gradually coming together!

    22. Oh my WOW :D That is turning out so amazing @flowergirl

    23. That is beautiful and cleverly crafted @flowergirl. I love the colors.

    24. @Aarilyn, what an adorable dress. I love the modern fabric.

@flowergirl, your gown is looking awesome. I can't wait to see the finished product.

@SteamWitch, why won't Thaddeus show us the front? Tell him to turn around-- I want to see the front view of his headdress, and what you've done with the dyed lace! I think I see either lace or soutache on the lower part of his garment?

I was hoping to get a daytime photo, but had to work late, and as I found out I'll be working late all week, it didn't make sense to wait until tomorrow. So apologies for the cruddy nighttime flash photo. Here is the center applique in progress. I am padding the gold satin stitching, so that's why the top portion is orangey tan, not gold. I am a novice embroiderer, but I am learning a lot, which is always a good thing. :)

    25. Beautiful work @sakuraharu, your catching on quickly.
Thaddeus wants the front to be finished before he turns around. I have some sewing and a hook and eye to add before the bling goes on. Thadd's all about the bling.

    26. Your embroidery is really wonderful!

    27. wow I'm feeling intimidated by all the beautiful creations on this thread! Very well done everybody :D
I'm taking the easy option as usual - just a simple dress based on New Look pattern 6401 - with crossed straps at the back. Just trying to figure out the shape of pattern pieces (I don't own the pattern to refer to) So hopefully these bits will somehow magically assemble themselves into a gown ^_^ If I've got time I'd like to make another gown from the dark red fabrics too... doesn't time fly though? :ablink:

    31. I LOVE the lace on the back!!

    32. Thank you! :)

Thank you, He does look good in green lace and beads and tulle. He is a happy wizard. :XD:
It was on of those thrift shop finds that are rare and then to find such a nice use for it. I am glad it turned out well. :thumbup Thank you.

    33. I redid the skirt a little to add the base layer of tulle to it!

I sewed ribbon onto the over layers of tulle.

I put her legs into a roll of paper towel so I could work on her better.

    36. that outfit is just perfect the way it is SteamWitch :D Beautiful progress pics MoomaBJD and MayBee25 :love
Teleri on flickr use the 'share' arrow to the right of your picture and choose bb code to copy/paste - works for me anyway ^_^

meanwhile another progress pic from me - just to keep me on task! ^_^ Pieces all cut out now - roughly - I'm sewing by hand as I hate using my sewing machine - running stitch is fast and adequate for doll clothes - in fact most clothing was sewn using running-backstitch, before the sewing machine was invented - so google tells me! Running-backstitch is apparently a backstitch every 6 running stitches, just for added strength. I'm going to try sewing my own clothes by hand using this stitch too! The sticking plasters are for my home made 'thimble' - 2 ways around and over the fingertip is fine for the 'pushing finger' - my other fingers just have to take their chances :shudder Danielle is so huge (impldoll idol girl) I've used the best part of 2 yards of fabric for this dress :ablink:

    38. Maybee that's going to look so great! (I mean, it's already great looking ... I probably shouldn't forum before I've had my tea)

Can't wait to see the rest of your beading work Mooma!

And can't wait to see the rest of the hanbok Teleri.

    39. MayBee25 - I bought some miniature leaves, that are about 3/4" long at a dollhouse miniatures shop called Jeepers, that would be perfect in your dress, perhaps you could find them in a similar shop near you? Mine are autumn colored oak leaves, but they had ferns and holly and a few others as well.

Nice beginning I love the color combo @Teleri
I look forward to your progress and hope you find the lace your looking for @urbanizer

I'm partially done with a simpler but still elegant version of Thaddeus' sarong.:thumbup

    44. thanks SteamWitch :D Meanwhile I have been sewing like a maniac - I just can't leave something unfinished :nosebleed Yards and yards of seams - why did I pick such a huge doll? :doh Very happy with the result though, mainly because I can't buy her clothes - she's too big! So I've been meaning to try sewing for her for a looong time - and nothing other than a DoA project would motivate me ^_^ I left the back of the dress open to her bum in the end, fastened with 2 hook/bars at the bodice - and changed the design slightly from New Look's version, as crossed straps were just too complicated to bother with. She needs some jewellery and a faceup still - I don't think I'm strong enough to take her head off at the moment, so it will have to wait - I'm glad it's a long dress as the only shoes she has are her stomping fur boots :XD: Without those on she'd never stand up at all - she is the worst posing doll EVER - but so pretty I can live with it ^_^ The fabric is just cheap polycotton - I really need a bigger stash!

    49. The talent here is truly amazing me this time around. It's like everyone's pulling out all the stops with their incredible designs!:)

elve, your design gives her such a gorgeous silhouette...awesome!

SteamWitch, I so adore Thaddeus and man, is he ever rocking that belt...Hot! Hot! Hot!

And whew! I'm finally done! Fortunately I was able to salvage enough fabric from that skirt (by cutting an opening to show the cage crinoline) to make her a matching bodice. (all these fabrics and laces are 120 year old antique, so my supply was limited to that skirt alone.) So now my steampunk girl, Murphy, is all ready for the cotillion. (Well,:sweat except for shoes of course...I still need to find her some of those.)

Great work everyone, keep the creative juices flowing! :D

    52. @elve That is a lovely evening dress, she looks beautiful.

Great job @PoeticSoul getting a bodice from the skirt takes talent and patience. She looks very steampunk. Thaddeus needs to meet her, another three eyed person, he thinks he's the only one. :XD:

    53. thank you Realmling, MoomaBJD, Teleri and SteamWitch :D And thank you PoeticSoul - I absolutely love that gorgeous creation of yours! :love

    54. PoeticSoul, that is so amazing!

I've got a bit more going on the skirt. It'll poof up a tad more when I do the shorter inside piece, but the big rectangle is gathered and I did a test pin to see how it looked.

It's not super cold right now, so Tilly's head is off for spraying...hopefully I can get her faceup done tomorrow.
