Wearables Sewing Project: Designer’s Choice! [ Round 133 ]

Apr 1, 2024

    1. Tiny bit more progress here while I wait for a little table to be delivered for my sewing (the folding wooden one I used before is the only thing which fits in my tiny kitchen & I don't like eating off my lap!)

Decided to make a false underskirt for this skirt to make it a bit longer - this is the only fabric I have which almost goes OK (kind of maybe). Also cut out some stockings from a tatty old pair of socks, which were clean, just a bit worn!

    2. Some really cute progress in this thread!

@elve - the underskirt really adds to the already adorable mix of flower patterns!
@Lillith - the embroidery is shaping up so nice, it looks almost like a shirt from a folk costume :daisy

I made some accessories to wrap my sewing up for this month - fingerless gloves!

I have a worn t-shirt that I've managed to get many bits out of for dolls (underwear, socks, shirts, shorts...), it's nice to still find new venues for it!

I also felt the whole thing would look much more badass without the jacket, I'm now extra thankful for having made the hood detachable :)

    3. @elve The addition of yet another fabric for a false underskirt is a wonderful idea! That colorful fabric pattern really adds some extra zing to your overall composition.:)

@cobaltconduct I can’t begin to tell you how much I’m loving this outfit! Those fingerless gloves are a perfect touch. Boy oh boy, your doll just exudes character in this.:D

And I’m finally done for this month…3 Lolita blouses is enough for me! So fiddly and time consuming (even has working buttons and buttonholes,) but I got what I wanted in the end so I’m considering it a win.:thumbup

Here is the first blouse worn with the underskirt I made from last month’s round.

And here she is, showing off the other two blouses I made from different fabrics.

    4. @PoeticSoul Those blouses are absolutely gorgeous! What a lucky doll she is. :D
The style reminds me of some of the better blouses from Anna House, that used to be one of the more affordable and size inclusive brands in the early days of the fashion. You've got a solid old school lolita vibe going on there. :)

    5. Thanks @cobaltconduct :D Love the gloves as a finishing touch with the hoodie - looks very cool in both senses of the word!

Thanks @PoeticSoul :fangirl: Those 3 blouses are adorable as is the matching underskirt - so skilled with the buttonholes too!

    6. @elve Skirt's looking really nice, the underskirt layer gives it a little extra pop.

@cobaltconduct Man I just love every part of you outfit, you boy looks super cool. His look as really good sci-fi vibes.

@PoeticSoul You blouses came out nice, and the skirt is really pretty. Also the black fabric one is my fave of them.

Updates on my projects. *Panicked screaming and running in little circles here.*
Ok so buying the pattern and getting the pattern for the jacket took some work. Had to find the small hidden link to a Drop Box of patterns and then find it on the list. (but bonus for the price I have a month of being able to have any pattern on said list in said Drop Box.)

Next came the week long battle my SO and I have had with the PDF and figuring out how to resize the pieces to scale for a 68cm boy. If I am lucky should get it to be printable now, and printed this week. Which mean I'll have a last minute project or else will end up starting my own project journal thread to continue updates end.

Also the 3D printer had to have it's print plate replaced, which now has been so hopefully this week Ryvik will get his phaser and tricorder.

Bright point Ryvik got a grey t-shirt which will work under his jacket so that's one less uniform part I need to make at least. I got the shirt in a clothing lot from a friend and it fits him prefect in spite of being for a slightly smaller doll.

I kind of figured I wouldn't get anything much done this month, but at least I have gotten things started by joining this thread.

    7. Thanks @Tippetarius :D Yes it's good to make a 'declaration of intent' on this project thread IMO I'd have no motivation otherwise! When I scaled down sewing patterns for humans to doll size I used the arm measurement & scaled the rest of the pattern down from those proportions - I can't find the threads I did on DoA about it now it was years ago. Also helps to have a regular proportioned doll - they often have veeery long legs compared to us stumpy humans LOL

Meanwhile my doll has SHIPPED :sumomo:
After just a fortnight! Unfortunately stupid me FORGOT to add the $1 wig to my order as I was so overwhelmed at the time so she will be BALD until I get the cheap wig I ordered the other day when I realised my mistake - but that's coming by airmail so I guess doll will arrive first by EMS - ah well...

    8. Well I washed and dried an old t-shirt which I'm cutting up for a top for this outfit. Spent all morning trying to squeeze a full size ironing board into my tiny room full of clutter (I just have one room in sheltered housing now) so I could start sewing it, but judging by the creases I need to put steam in the iron too!

In the event, making the false underskirt took forever and I almost self-combusted with rage a few times LOL - This is going to have to do for now although I think I'll unpick the frill and make an actual underskirt when I have time. So many faults on this skirt but I'll try to ignore them :sigh

Also sewed up the stockings and really just hope something fits her when she arrives - I've mainly had 1/3 sized dolls before so I'm not really sure how big a 1/4 is IRL - measurements don't really give me much idea. But at least stockings can become socks or be taken in, and an elastic waist skirt is adjustable - Hopefully tee shirt fabric for a top will be easy-fit either way and I've got plenty of it!

    9. @elve I think you did a great job under the circumstances. It's always a challenge to make something for a doll you don't have yet. I think your reasoning is sound and hopefully any minor fit issues can be fixed when she arrives.
      Good job!

    10. @elve It all looks great, I hope it fits your girl when you get her in hand at last.

As for me the long (far too long) battle with the PDF of the jacket pattern is finally over. We got it resized and I think in the right size, or at least into a size I can make hand adjustments too. The down side is that even taking it down to 1/3rd scale the PDF forces the pattern to be printed into little bitty parts on multiple sheets of paper meant to cut out and be taped together on. So now I have a dozen sheets of paper to cut out and puzzle piece together. Also there was no way to make the PDF put a whole part of the pattern on one page without having an specialty printer so puzzle it is. *head desks*

It's do able, but fighting the PDF to resize and to be printable ate more time then it needed to, so now my plan is to carry project into the next month or two. I'm going to start a project journal thread here for it and making the remaining props.

Still glad joined the thread as it gave me the kickstart I needed to start and stay on task with this. I got my sewing table cleaned off. I got the right fabrics for this. I got a cosplay pattern for the style jacket I wanted for Ryvik's uniform. I found him a grey tee in the right shade to work with the uniform. I found my pants pattern so can try and sew him black slacks for his main uniform. (Though more than any other clothing piece I suck at sewing pants. So might end up with me just buying him black pants.) I also want him to have a desert uniform and to that end, I found him white paints that fit and found my hooded robe pattern so can add it to the to do list.
His 3D printed props are coming along slowly, but well. The com badge needs a magnet backing to make it wearable and removeable to the uniform, it also needs a coat of silver paint.

So even though nothing actually got sewn, I did get a lot done and set in motion, which was worth it.

    11. @elve I know it’s been giving you fits, but it’s turned out so darned cute!:XD: I love that combination of fabrics. And certainly your logic is sound. Here’s hoping it all fits once your girl arrives.:thumbup

@Tippetarius Even though it’s coming together slowly, the most important thing is that it is coming along!:) Sometimes it’s the planning and prep work that takes the longest. All that matters is the end results. We have to remember that sometimes sewing can be a journey, especially where our special characters are concerned. Your methodical approach is to be admired.:thumbup

    12. Thanks @Lillith <3 I think the issues with this top may be more than minor LOL - I'll probably end up cutting it up into a sleeveless boob tube :XD:

Thanks @Tippetarius <3 Fingers crossed! Glad you've made some progress too :3nodding:

Thanks @PoeticSoul <3 I have realised now that sewing is definitely NOT a relaxing hobby

So today I got the outfit finished although this tee shirt leaves A LOT to be desired haha - I wanted to use the sleeve of my tee shirt as it was already hemmed but the downside to that was I had to make set-in sleeves, and had no idea what I was doing with the shoulders or neckline as you can see LOL - But it's done, I'll be amazed if it fits but I've plenty more fabric (although might be tempted to buy a $5 professionally made one from Alices instead!) :whee:

    13. @elve I like the colour of the t-shirt together with the skirt and the dot pattern on the socks. A very cute outfit!

I have finished Petronellas blouse. It's not perfect, but what is?
Over all I'm mostly happy with it. :)

    14. @Lillith I love how it came out! It looks really pretty and has this plan and simple kind of loveliness to it. All the hard work has paid off. Also perfection is the enemy of good, and the blouse is really good. <3

    15. Thank you @Lillith :D That blouse is really beautiful - I love the sleeves! Looks perfect with that skirt too :aheartbea

    16. @Tippetarius Thank you! I don't know, I mean you have to go through "good" to get to "perfect" so they are hardly opposites, but sometimes good enough is good enough. :)

@elve Thanks! I am actually surprized at how much the bright colours of the blouse embroidery tones the very busy skirt fabric down and i like it. And it works for what I imagine Petronella would like to wear.

    17. Everyone's done such a good job this round!

@PoeticSoul - the detail in the shirts is beautiful! (Working buttons????) Can't wait to see how you go forward with the outfit!

@elve - I'm really looking forward to see the outfit on your doll once it arrives, I'm sure everything fits better than expected :)

@Lillith - I'm very inspired by the cut of the blouse and am now debating on making something like that for myself (in human size :blush). I love the blue stitching you've added, it makes a very pleasant contrast with the warmer tones.

@Tippetarius - I'm very bad at pre-planning my projects so it's always nice to see someone actually putting a good amount of time and effort into prep. Looking forward to seeing how the re-sized pattern works out!

I guess I managed to more-or-less finish what I wanted with Billie's outfit, thank you everyone who has said nice words about it as well! Sewing for her also made me realise I should change her head to a different body so I had to unpick a stitch or two near the crotch to re-fit the pants for wider thighs (probably good anyway so my other dolls can wear those, too). Did not end up with tons of pockets as I had planned but there's always the next jacket I guess :sweat

    18. Thank you! It's a very simple cut. It's basicly just rectangles. The necline it slightly lower in the front to avoid the collar pulling backwards and because she is a doll I omitted under arm gussets. I would do gussets for a human blouse like this, to avoid strain on the under arm seam. All the rest of the shape is just strategic gathering.

    19. So many great projects this round again !!

I could not sew myself because I had to move in my old appartement to pack some things (planning to move this year for another city) and well... I totally forgot to take my sew stuff with me. ^^'

    20. Ok I know the month is over and technically we've moved onto the next round... BUT I got the desert variant uniform done.
I had to jimmy rig a duster coat into a robe pattern and resize it up from fitting a 60cm doll to fitting a 68. I didn't sew the the pants or undershirt, but I am really proud of the robe. I think it came out looking enough like the DS9 desert uniform that I had Ryvik wear it to a local meet on the 4th, which was sci-fi themed.

      Better late then never.
