It all looks so pretty and dainty. Well done! I love the variation of projects people havecome up with for this round. I know it's been said before but it really is very inspirational - and SO much fun to get to see everyone's imaginative and creative processes in action. Teddy
@Valdemagra What amazing up-cycling of various found pieces. I’m really loving all your creativity for this round…it’s so inspiring!
Ok, so a bit of an update, even though I'm late and still not finished. I got a bit of hand work done in the car on the way to a friend's annual Wedding Anniversarty barbecue on Sunday, so all the binding on the waistcoat is now done. I added the fastenings to both wqistcoat and skirt, and unpicked/resewed the back of the skirt to the shortened waistband yesterday (I'd allowed way too much space for the blouse and petticoats under it, so it was too big). I'm not happy with how the front pleats make the skirt hang so may need to unpick and resew the front into a bigger number of smaller pleats than the current arrangement, and the waistcoat needs a set of (decorative only) buttons sewn down the front. However, I got sidetracked into using the offcuts to make a big bow to sew finish off the back of the waistcoat: This has taken far longer than it otherwise might have done because I only just had enough unfaded/less faded fabric to make the bow itself, with a bit of piecing, and I was very very short of red to do the bing=ding (especially aftr making a mistake cuttign the biggest piece) so was forced to piece a lot of little scraps together to eke out enough fabric to bind the second hanging "streamer". I only had one fat quarter of the red to begin with, and after lining and binding the waistcoat and trimming the skirt with it, there wasn't a lot left to play with. I think the hang of the skirt at the front bugs me enoug to warrant unicking it form the waistband and repleating it so it might be a while before this is completely done, though it is coming out better thn I ever expected when I realized about the fading so thank you all for the encouragement to carry on with making it - and I'm also grateful to Hilarie for her (off-forum) suggestion of going with the red fabric as contrast to the check, while picking out the fine lines of red in the pattern. I think that has really helped to pull it together. More updates (and a picture of Nesta wearing it) once the final tweaks are in place. Teddy
@Teddy Oooooh…this is looking soooo good! That red trim is super stunning and ties all the parts together beautifully. Any fading seems totally irrelevant now! So beautifully done!
What is time, eh? I was traveling, and then busy, and suddenly it's August But I actually did some more work on my project back in mid-July and finished Ayleen's embroidered hakama trousers: Steampunk kimono progress 3 by helgie, on Flickr I don't feel like finishing the rest of the outfit now, but hopefully one day will return to it. I'm still too busy to read through all the updates in this thread, but the pictures alone are great! So many interesting ideas brought to life
@Valdemagra all your little fairies are so cute and magical, I love all their little props in the photos too @Teddy I'm glad you kept going with that dress-- it's definitely worth finishing! @helgie those embroidered pants are gorgeous! As for me, I finally got done with the last of the dresses I was making for this round, so here it is: She'd probably look better with a head, but hers is off being painted. Anyway, that's that project complete! The collar was super hard-- I struggled with both making the pattern for it and also attaching it (there is probably a better way to do it than the way I did it). I'm just happy it looks pretty much like the reference pic I was using now that it's done.
@thedarkeststar13 , Wow!! That was fast!! Looks just like you intended! Love it! How does it close? Can I see the back?
@Teddy Ooooo...that's so pretty. Love that red trim with that fabric! And thanks for showing the construction in the bow. @helgie That whole outfit turned out fantastic. @thedarkeststar13 That's another spoonflower fabric, isn't it? Looks fantastic. The sharp white points (collar and cuffs) on those rich colors looks so cool!
Sure, I'll post a shot of the back tomorrow when all the tech junk that I need to post pics is charged-- it died on me directly after my last photo post and if there's a way to post pics from Flickr onto DoA from my phone I don't know it! It's just a snap closure, nothing fancy. @Vindalootoo thank you! I love contrast-- that was what caught my eye about the original reference dress.
Very nice indeed - and it doesn't look as if it's acking "the rest of the outfit" Gorgeous - the plain white collar and cuffs are the perfect contrast to the busy fabric. The amount of fabric really dictated the bow construction. I tend to find I have to figure out what will work with the scraps I have left when it comes to finishing touches, like bows so let the availabel amterials dictate how I put them together. This one for Nesta's gingham dress was also an exercise in pieciing: As you can see, Nesta is fond of big bows on her bum, so it seemed appropriate to give her one on the faded suit too. Teddy
@helgie Those hakama are completely magical with that beautiful embroidery! I’m so impressed with the work you do, and utterly fascinated by your little one’s character (as evidenced by her wardrobe.) What an amazing doll! @thedarkeststar13 Oh my! What a perfect rendition of that dress! I swear it looks like a page from a vintage “Seventeen” fashion magazine from the 1960s! I love, love, love that style…the contrasting white of the collar and cuffs is so gorgeously retro. @Teddy I can’t believe I’m completely mesmerized by your bows! The scale, the shape, the perfect neatness…talk about attention to detail!
@helgie That skirt is so sweet! I just love the stitch detailing! @thedarkeststar13 You're killing me. Please make me a human sized dress exactly like this, I'm begging you (or I'll have to do it myself ) @Teddy I just love that big bow - reminds me of the ones I'd still from Christmas decorations when I was a kid and put the bow on my head
And here we go with the finished suit Better than I expected but I still managed to construct the bow with one of the streamers back-to-front so the angle of the ends don't match, and she has the indignity of having a roled sock shoved up the back of her petticoat and pinned in place because I still haven't made any basutles for my girls to have proper foundation garments under their skirts. The bow is detachable in case she wants to wear a jacket or coat over the suit. I put two hools on the back of it and worked two thread bars in a (sort of) mathcing green thread on the back-waist of the waistcoat. Thank you all so much for the encouragement to carry on with this project. I'm really glad that I listened. Teddy
@Teddy Yay! Marvelous! The shoes are perfect, red buttons, black neck tie, comes together as a set perfectly. Hey, poorer ladies may have bundled some wooly socks over their bums back in the day, hehe.
They're ancient Volks boots from about 15 years ago when I got my first girl (and they actually lace up the sides with no handy zip so are a bit of an aggrivation to get on and off) Teddy
@Teddy Oh my, that turned out soooo lovely! I love all the dark red trim, it’s such a tailored and elegant look. I’m so happy you were able to finish this outfit and didn’t give up on it because the end result is real feast for the eyes! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
@Teddy FWIW, Wiishu has several laceups. I replaced the laces with lightweight elastic and it works great. Not sure how it would work with larger dolls boots, but it might make it a little easier to get on and off. At least you don't have to totally unlace them, which is what I found was the only option to have way overlong laces.
That's my issue with thewse (overlong laces, as those tiny holes are a bugger if I have to keep relacing them), but I think the elastic idea is GENIUS, so I will steal it wholesale from you, with heartfelt thanks for sharing. Teddy
