Wearables Sewing Project: Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 129 ]

Dec 1, 2023

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Now is the time to think about something cozy and comfy for our dolls to wear. With the holidays near, perhaps it’s time to consider some warm pajamas to await Santa Claus’s arrival on a snowy winter night. Or if you live in warmer climes, how about a comfy tee and shorts? And hasn’t your resident diva been demanding some lacy underthings to wear beneath an elegant negligee? Feel free to be creative in your thinking on this one.

      Week 1: 12/1-12/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 12/8 to 12/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 12/16 to the end of December
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 130 ] Unfinished Business
      [ Round 131 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics)

    2. Petticoats. It's going to have to be petticoats.

They all need them, they all have them, but for some reason they always seem to be at least one petticoat short. If they are not too few, they are the wrong lengt, if they are the right length they are the wrong shape and it they are the right shape they are the wrong colour.
You can win the battle, but not the war. There are never enough petticoats.

    3. I'd like to join and make a comfy lounging outfit for Anwen (FairyLand MiniFee Chloe).
A couple of weeks ago all I wanted to do were small embroidery projects and some kind of setup for a winter and New Year themed photo shoot. Which somehow translated to making Anwen a pillow nest  So far it includes 4 finished and 4 in-progress decorative pillows/cushions, a synthetic fur coverlet, and a book. Comfy clothes are the obvious nex step, as Anwen doesn't have any. So I'll be making:
      - night shirt;
      - dressing gown;
      - warm socks;
      - slippers.
And finishing the pillows, which can be counted as accessories.

    4. @helgie Oh, I realy should make some dressing gowns too, thanks for reminding me.
Something super simple that I can slip on the doll while sewing for them so that they don't have to sit around completely naked after measuring and between fittings.

    5. Ooh exciting!!! Well, I have a new doll arriving Tuesday, if the tracking is correct, a Raccoondoll Ada, who is a 33cm child doll is scale with the FID/Raccoondoll/fashion dolls - so I'm very excited about that, and I will need to make something for her! I'm thinking some sort of frilly nightgown to wear on Christmas morning while opening her Christmas stocking. And the stocking itself I guess. Maybe some bloomers?

I was thinking of making corsets for the bigger girls, but I think that will involve a lot of trial and error with drafting, and it's a busy month, and besides, I don't want my new doll to have to sit around naked! So that will have to be a project for another day.

    6. I've started on the petticoat for Petronella that I planned, but never made, last month.

Here are the materials and the pattern. I'm not sure about exactly what to do for decorations yet, so the ribbons pictured are just some of the options. All I know is that there need to be at least something going on apart form just a plain skirt.
I have cut out the pieces and sealed the edges since this picure was taken, so now all that's left to do ot to put it all toghether.

    7. Ooh I love those colours, that will be so pretty!!!!

    8. Yeah another sewing round !
I will think about it, maybe a comfy outfit for my Aglaë, she has a very light dress that doesn't fit with the weather. XD I wanted to sew a bloomer for her too. I will see if I have the time for all that.

    9. I'm in! I'm sewing form my Dream Valley Rosa, Morrigan. I'm making her a long sleeve off the shoulder t-shirt and a three tiered skirt.
Here she is in the last outfit I made her many months ago.

    10. Woo sewing time! With NaNo over, a week off at the end of the year, and my yarn/fabric stash ottoman no longer able to close from all the stuff in it, I sure hope I get some sewing done this month!

Everyone's gonna be a potential sewing model. I love having pajamas for all my dolls and I've been slacking on jammie-ing the new fellas. In addition, I'm gonna see what I can do to start making some underwear for everyone. That's another thing I've been meaning to do, and I hope that some simple briefs and such will help me get back into the swing of sewing.

I did pick out a selection of fabric I could work with, though really, there's plenty of possibilities in that poor ottoman, especially if I try and do some nightgowns.

Plenty of woven and knit options in varying thickness! I know they're there! Now to make something from them...

      • x 5
    11. Well, I may have to eat my words, but I am determined to actually join in this time and get some work done on the stack of nightdresses I cut out for a previous itteration of this round....

... if i can find where I put them....

    12. I made a few sketches after looking up some ideas and I'm still not sure what I'm going to make. I don't usually do comfy or bedtime clothes so hopefully I can come up with a few things. The only thing that I want to make for sure is a yukata for my boy. I am determined to use up some scrap fabric I have from some old clothes of mine, so I need enough ideas for all of this. Maybe some pants and a hoodie at the least, but I haven't a clue what to make for tops. I'm not really enthused about t-shirts, I want something cute but simple to make.

I'm going to focus on making things for Revin, my Withdoll Aiden. Here he is in the most recent top I made for him and his long haired wig I swapped him into about a week ago (he usually has short hair).

    13. I really and truly need to come up with a clothing solution for Jewell, my new lavender skin Dollzone Sawarieda mermaid girl. She’s my newest doll, and while I’ve been enjoying just staring at her amazing sculpt for the past couple of months, it’s time to truly make her mine. The first step that has to be done prior to faceup and extensive artwork is to make her something to wear (so the colors and placement of art will become clearer for me.) Since I plan to begin working on her next month, now is the time!

I have pretty sari scraps left over from my work on previous rounds, so it makes perfect sense to use those to come up with something “bra and slip” related for my mermaid. I’ll be devising a pattern of my own that will work in tandem with the necessary straps of Jewell’s suspended display case I refurbished for her. Hey, I’m making this up as I go for this very uniquely shaped doll.:sweat My inspiration is the bra and skirt ensemble I created in a previous round for my barbarian girl. I’m not sure how it will go, but something vaguely similar.

Here is Jewell, in all her naked and blank 105cm splendor.

And the inspiration I made in a previous round, with some of the fabrics I have to choose from.

    14. Considering joining this round since I recently fixed my sewing machine (that I never used before) and would like to sew something simpler for practice.
I'm thinking my chances of actually finishing are higher with the machine, since I don't have to spend weeks doing frustrating hand sewing (I tend to get demotivated easily which is why I never finish these rounds).

Will probably be using this pattern since I purchased it a long while ago and have yet to use it. It's for slim MSD so I'll be sewing for my minifee like usual.

The plan is to just make it from plain white cotton; I'm treating this mostly as a practice but it will also make a nice simple in-between outfit to keep my doll in on the shelf.

    15. I'm going to be out of town from the 17th through the end of December but...I really want to give this a shot! I've been wanting to sew a chemise + bloomers or possibly combinations set for Naran in preparation for the corset I ordered her way back when. The patterns shouldn't be that hard for me to draft before I leave and I already have lightweight fabric to use, I just need to find some scale appropriate lace.

It would also be a great opportunity for me to practice my hand sewing as well while I'm away from my machine at home :celebrate

    16. The whole family has bronchitis but me (and it better stay away!!!), so I may end up sitting this round out because PHEW it's been a wild two weeks being a one-person home healthcare team for three people, lol.

    17. Poop! I hope they all recover soon and you manage to remain well!

I think I've figured out where I stashed the nightdresses I cut out last time, but have yet to go dig them out to be sure.

    18. Have you tried threading some flat-elastic though it to snug it in a little?

      Teddy

    19. @Teddy I hadn't thought of that, I'll see if it works.

    20. [IMG]
      Current Progress Collage Image
Most of my thoughts are in the second image, but basically as a spark-notes version:

      1. The pin tucks need to be half the size they are now, They're cute but I find them to be just slightly too big. I also may do them higher and up them to 3 instead of 2.
      2. Longer ruffle to makeup for lost fabric in the pin tucks
      3. I still need to draft the pattern for the bloomers...
I used this pattern I found it through a youtube video of someone making it, then I used Doll-mage's tutorial/proportioning scales (probably incorrectly sdfghjk) to size up the pattern

The final version will be made out of the fabric on the bottom left I think, its very sheer and thin its the outer layer of a really worn out old navy dress I think the sheerness/texture will help it lay better bc...I didn't add a picture but because of Naran's bust the dress is essentially a tent lmao that's about it! I do need to tea stain the teeny tiny lace but that can wait for the time being :( I'm actually getting super stressed about being away from my doll while trying to finish it. I'm probably going to have to take like two billion extra measurements just to make sure it should still fit at the very end or I'm just going to have to wait till I get back...

      • x 8
    21. @Eggenthusiast Oh I'm digging that fabric and lace. The textures look great together.

@Leo Pheonix Those fabrics are so cute but ow I feel you on the neckline for that top. Hopefully the elastic idea works!

@PoeticSoul I'm excited to see what you make! The previous projects you've done with the sari scraps were so lovely.

@Alamentine What a handsome fellow! Same on the using old clothes; I've got some in my fabric pile. Are you using a particular yukata pattern? I know there's the any-size tutorial here but my knowledge is otherwise rather limited!

    22. I had some thin round elastic from another project and a tiny safety pin, and managed to thread the elastic through the neck edging. It looks better, but not great. The color also doesn't work with the skirt as well as I thought it would. I'm planning to make a second shirt from green t-shirt fabric that looks better with the skirt. And maybe a different pattern. Here's a photo of the skirt in progress-

    23. Oh, I didn’t even think of looking for one, that would of helped with the measurements. I made one based off of the yukata that I own, but I sized it down too much and have to fix the pattern a bit.

    24. I think either size of tucks are fine, scale wise. It's looking very pretty

      That's looking lovely.

      Teddy

    25. All projects are so lovely !
Well, i'm sick again. =_=' (I hate my bad health...) So I can't really sew. I think I will pass this round again. :(
But it's really great to see everyone's sewings. =)

    27. @Eggenthusiast I love that you’re planning to use repurposed fabrics for this. Your pattern work so far is wonderful, and I agree with all your proposed changes to make it even better.:) I’m really looking forward to how this comes along.

@Leo Pheonix That skirt is looking amazing already! I love anything patchwork and this is already stunning.:D

@Moonycat31 Oh pooh!:sorry I sincerely hope you feel real better soon. It’s truly miserable when ill health ruins your creativity and plans. Hang in there, and push come to shove next month is our “unfinished business” round which will allow you to hopefully catch up on whatever plans you might have missed out on due to health issues.

And as for me this round, I’m tickled pink that I was actually able to pull off what I wanted on my very unusual mermaid girl. It took a lot of thinking on this one because I wanted a certain look, but also wanted to plan out the construction to be able to easily dress and undress her while still in her hanging display harness (because I didn’t want to have to completely remove her every time I simply wanted to change her outfit…I’m lazy like that.);) I completely removed her of course to devise the initial pattern. The good news is it worked on the first try! And now I can see where to put her initial blushing and artwork for future creative endeavors.

    28. @Teddy @PoeticSoul Thanks ! Yeah my health is just... well... is not very good. ^^' So it's hard to just sit and can do nothing sometimes.
BTW @PoeticSoul your mermaid is beautiful like this ! <3

    29. {applause!} Well done! It looks great!

    30. These all look so wonderful.
@PoeticSoul That is a lovely outfit. The colors are fantastic.

I'm finally getting myself together so I might be able to join in next month. I have sewing projects that have been left unfinished for far too long.

    31. Here's Morrigan in my first attempt at the long sleeve shirt and finished skirt. I'm saving showing off the full skirt until she has a better fitting shirt to go with it.

    32. Nightshirt done:
[IMG]Comfy New Year outfit - nightshirt by helgie, on Flickr
I tried some drawn thread work for decoration. The front panel did not go as planned: the pattern was a bit too complicated and didn't work with this scale and materials. I did my best to salvage the resulting mess and stuck to simple triangles for shoulders and sleeves. The nightshirt itself is very simple, made out of a single piece of thin linen.
Also in the pictures are some of the cushions for the pillow nest.
I'm procrastinating on drafting the dressing gown, the shawl collar is intimidating :sweat. I plan to sew it out of the red fabric draped over Anwen in the upper left photo, it is synthetic velvet.
Meanwhile I'm working on more cushions, also a couple more mini books (which require some sewing on the spines, soooo...), and thinking about suitable materials for slippers.

      • x 10
    33. @Eggenthusiast Pretty! I think the tucks look fine. Sure, thay may be a little more like groth pleats than pin tucks, but those are a thing too, so I see nothing wrong. It looks very cute in any case.

@Leo Pheonix That skirt is wonderful!

@PoeticSoul You've done it again. I love all your colourful and whimsical designs and this one is no different. And so well designed and proportioned to such an unusual doll too. You've got a very good eye for this.

@helgie Oh, I love that kind of embroidery. It's tedious and time consuming, but it always makes things look so neat and well worked, it's woth it.

Compared to all the progress you guys made I am almost embarresed to show the only thing I've made so far. I finished the petticoat a week ago and haven't goten around to taking pictures until now.
We'll see if I can get some more sewing done, I have some other projects draining my creative batteries right now, but I'll try.

    34. @Leo Pheonix Ooooh…I love the look of that skirt so much (even if it’s just a sneak peak.):) I’m old, so I remember skirts like this being all the rage back in the day, and it just tickles me to see one made for a doll. The colors are so pretty and I’m looking forward to seeing what future blouse you decide to pair with it.

@helgie I always love your embroidery, and this drawn thread work is quite fascinating. The fact that you’re doing it in such a small scale is a real testament to your abilities, and I love that you let us experience it through seeing your work. Every time I see a piece of your embroidery I feel like I’ve added a new layer of knowledge to my sewing awareness. It’s absolutely fascinating!

@Lillith Oh my, that’s truly lovely! I love all the little details and how perfectly in scale everything is. If I didn’t know better, I’d think this was a photo of a human-sized vintage petticoat. Way to go!:thumbup

    35. Gorgeous work, everyone!! I did end up getting sick, but I think I'm on the mend now and I'm ready to entertain a project! Luckily all my holiday crafting is officially done, so I can devote my crafty time to fun projects for the rest of the month! I'll be back once I've decided on what I'd like to do.

    36. Looking forward to seeing it.

I was about to comment on how nice hte open-work looks. Sorry it didn't go as you planned but the results still look good.

HA! I've made no progress beyond finding the pieces o he nicghtdresses I cut out last time.

So pretty - I love the zig-zag hemline over the ruffle - that's a lovely detail.

Glad to hear you're recovering! I'll look forward to seeing your project.

    37. Top version 2 is finished! I used the same pattern, but made the sleeves longer, and measured how long the neck edging should be and trimmed it down before sewing it on. It still needed to be gathered with the elastic cord again, but much less. I think it came out pretty good! And I love this skirt pattern.

    38. Much better. Lovely with the tiered skirt

      Teddy

    39. @Leo Pheonix Oh yes! That works much better for the top, and I love that skirt pattern too. What an adorable look this is for your girl (such a fascinating sculpt.) Well done indeed!:)

And since I had time left in the month (holiday preparations and decorations are already done, and cooking supplies for the big family dinner have been stocked) I’ve decided to use up some of my small hoard of sari scraps by making a few more outfits for my mermaid girl. My initial pattern worked out so well, I’ve decided to just keep going as time allows to give her a complete wardrobe. I’ve just finished this one in dark green and chartreuse.

    40. Lovely.

    41. Lovely, I love the colors.

    42. This skirt caught my eyes, I think the combination is very good, reminiscent of mori or cottage style

    43. @Leo Pheonix oh my goodness this is an absolutely gorgeous combination!!! The skirt is so incredible :D:D:D

@PoeticSoul I'm always blown away by your skill with these sari scraps, and the amazing variety of pieces and looks you put together. I love the teardrop accents on this one!

    44. @Leo Pheonix The top looks much better, well done. Necklines in stretchy fabrics are tricky. And I agree with the others, the top and skirt goes so well together.

@PoeticSoul Oh, that green outfit is gorgeous. I love how well it ecco the leaf-like fins on ther arms and tail. For some reason it makes me picture her as more of a kelp mermaid than a fish mermaid. :D

    45. Thanks everyone for your compliments! I'm very happy with the outfit. Since I have more time this month, I decided my Heartstrung Ruse needs some custom made clothes. She's so slim, I'm using a pattern made to fit Dal and Monster High dolls. It's a pattern for Indian/Tibetan style outfit that I've never made before. Here's a photo of my Tyche with the pattern and fabric.

    46. Everyone's outfits are looking amazing!!!
Well, I didn't get very far with mine - I mean, I actually sewed her a whole dress but it doesn't fit the theme - but here are the pantaloons I made for her, anyway!
I made them with the Antique Lilac Iplehouse Kid boy pants pattern, except I shortened the legs, added lace, and also made the waist lower - not very historically accurate, but I'll be wanting to make a petticoat and a whole Victorian dress, and it gets bulky at the waist if it all sits in the same spot!
I want to make her some socks too, but at some point I plan to get her some smaller, in scale feet, so there doesn't seem much point until I get that sorted. She might just have to wear floor length dresses until then!

      • x 8
    47. @morganatron Now that’s some good thinking about dealing with waist bulk.;) Especially with the proposed bloomers/petticoat/dress scenario. A good pair of cute bloomers are always an excellent staple to any wardrobe with a more old-fashioned look.

    48. I’ve worked very hard this year to make sure all my dolls have a complete wardrobe, and this month has been no exception. I managed to create a full wardrobe for my difficult-to-dress massive mermaid, Dollzone Sawarieda (named Jewell) and use up a lot of my sari scraps in the process. Here are my final two:

This one in turquoise and dark teal.

And this one in peach and purple (not a combination I would normally put together…but…yeah, using up scraps.)

And here is her completed wardrobe, all together. I think this is a pretty nice collection for a mermaid. I’m happy with it, and the best part is I’m done before the holidays!:cheer

    49. I'm gonna be making a basic comfy pinafore to go with the petticoat and collared shirt pictured here! I'd like to have more comfy-looking little dresses for Dana, my BF Tommy girl, to wear with her basic layering pieces and most of what I have is either very fancy EGL-esque or the wrong colors to be worn with these light blue foundation pieces.

[IMG]Round 129 Comfywear! by Jules B, on Flickr

The pattern pieces for the blouse, petticoat, and pinafore were all drafted by me. Strangely the bodice piece has gone missing? It might have gotten separated from the rest of it during the selective unpacking I did after the first move of the year. :? Luckily that's one of the easiest pieces to make up on the fly, just some darts in a rectangle and she'll be all set.

The fabric is an old pajama top that has been in my fabric stash since I first entered the hobby back in the mid-2000s, so it is looong overdue to be used somehow. The sleeve hems have a little ruffle detail, which I may repurpose to make ruffled straps for the dress that won't require any hand-gathering. I, as always, assigned myself two more last-minute holiday crafting projects and only one is finished, so let's see how much of this I can actually get done before I roll it over into next round! :XD:

    50. Everyone is doing an amazing job on their outfits! I - shock of all shocks - actually made somethin that I can add! I made one of my Pipos Cheese mice a set of pajamas. :D I started a second pair for one of my others - eventually they will all each have a set, but it'll take me some time to finish them all. But now I have a good pattern to work off of and can make more sets when I have a chance. :) Here is Pepperoni showing off his comfy new duds. :)

    51. @Mamo Awwww…she’s so quaint looking, and this style is perfect for her.:)

@pepperonipizza It’s always delightful to see something made for such a tiny doll. That takes a whole new level of skill. He looks adorable in this!:D

    52. @pepperonipizza oh my GOD this is the cutest thing I've ever seen :D:D:D

@PoeticSoul thank you! I can't wait to give her an outfit change, lol

    54. I've been in a bit of a rush as I wanted to finish Anwen's outfit in time for a New Year themed BJD event that took place yesterday. And I did :dance Here is Anwen in her new nightshirt, dressing gown and slippers, among the many pillows:

The slippers are made of felt and some plush normally used for teddy bears.
The pattern with shawl collar for the dressing gown came out unexpectedly well on the first try. I first tried it out on some cotton, and now Anwen's getting a bonus pajama top.

    55. @helgie Oh how wonderful and cozy this scene is! I absolutely love it…all of it!:D Those pillows are gorgeous, your girl in her cozy nightgown and lovely robe is so beautiful, and those slippers are adorable. This entire scene is pure awesomeness! Bravo!:thumbup

    56. I've been preoccupied this month, but I got the yukata finished. Here's a few pictures. I made a pair of pants, a jinbei top and the first yukata I made which was a failure so I cut it short. I didn't end up taking pictures of him wearing them because I'm lazy and didn't want to untie the obi. I won't be doing anything else for the rest of the month, and next month I'll be busy with a new doll and 3d printing, so if I decide to join next month it'll probably be later in the month.
Have a happy holiday and new years everyone!! >^.^<

    58. @Alamentine Well done indeed! Those pieces are wonderful…it’s truly a handsome set. I love how the fabrics you used look so masculine, which is perfect for your guy.:)
