Wearables Sewing Project: Bohemian [ Round 126 ]

Sep 1, 2023

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Boho style is a free-spirited aesthetic that mixes different cultures and artistic expressions into an eclectic style with an emphasis on organic elements and nature. Think ‘70s hippies/‘20s gypsies/layered skirts/paisley shawls/ ethnic patterns/bright colors or natural shades/fringed leathers/and all sorts of vintage or antique styled fun! The sky’s the limit really, as this was a very free-minded and creative style.

      Week 1: 9/1-9/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 9/8 to 9/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 9/16 to the end of September
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 127 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay
      [ Round 128 ] Basics
      [ Round 129 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings

    2. Yay! Totally my style! I think I’ll try and join this round <3

    3. I'll make an attempt at this one. Can't promise anything grand, but I love haging out in these projects and it never feels quite right when I'm not participating.

This is my model for the month; Amalyssa. She is a Maskcat Joy.

She is tiny, only about 25cm tall, so the main challenge with her tends to be getting things to drape well enough to not betray the scale too badly. But on the positive side, one can have a huge stash of clothes for a doll this size before it starts taking up space. :wiggle

I don't have much of a plan for exactly what to make for her yet. I think I'll just roll with the theme and give myself some freedom of design and let things evolve as I go. Maybe a wrap dress, or a top and skirt. Maybe something crochet.

    4. Ooooo, I should join this round. I have two girls ordered but who aren't here yet, so I'll be using Trym as my model. The girls themselves are the same size and sculpt as Trym, Fairyland's Minifee Alan on Renewal A-Line bodies, but they're one each in the special event colors of elf gray and blue grey. I also ordered them with large busts while Trym has a cutie bust, so I'll have to leave some extra room in the chest.

      [IMG] [IMG]
And a link to the colors photo, since it's via DDE and I have no idea if it will show on its own or not: https://www.denverdoll.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/fairyland_minifee_special_skin_color_02.jpg

As for what I'm going to make, I've got a significant number of quilting strips in purple and green that are various batik prints. I'm going to attempt - attempt - to quilt a couple of peasant-style dresses. Why am I doing this, when I hate quilting with a fiery passion? Because my brain won't let the stupid idea go, so I might as well take the excuse to try to do something about it.

I've got two girls who I want to have match in style but not exactly in color placement. Target goal for the month is finishing one dress. If I actually manage to hit my stride with quilting for once, I'll reward myself by starting the second dress. If a miracle happens and I finish both, I'll make a couple of shawls to go with them.

Edit because the pack of quilting strips I have is apparently still made, so I'm linking it to show the colors I'll be working with: Wilmington Jewels - Dating a Royal - 24 - 2 1/2" Strips

    5. If it's any consolation, this is exactly how I feel every time I make pants. :XD:

      Sounds like a solid plan!

    6. Yay! Another round!!!

      Teddy

    7. Oh, I hate those too. I just hate quilting more. Watch, I'll end up making like three pairs of pants instead of finishing even one dress because I'll be procrastinating with the lesser of two evils.

    8. Loved seeing y'all's projects for last round while I lurked, and I'm excited to see more this round while I (hopefully) participate!

I'm gonna use Nova (Seed.Arts Wol) this round, she'd be a good one for boho style. And between what I already have stashed and all the floral quilting cotton fabric the thrift store's had the past couple days, I have no shortage of fabric options for her! The only trick is, again, a lot of it is quilting cotton, so it might need different pieces or some fiddling with for the flowy look I see in a lot of boho fashion.

If I can get my act together and cut out pieces for the doll-size quilts I want to make from that floral fabric, though, I might have things for something more patchwork...

I'd love to do pieces more suited for fall, but it's still pretty warm here (and only getting hotter for the week, ugh), so at the start of the month, at least, I'll probably end up doing stuff for this summery weather that's sticking around.

    9. This outfit is the beginning of a wardrobe for one of my incoming girls, a Dollzone Happy 2 named Boo, who is a super-cute and ghostly Pokemon trainer. Because of that, she needs a tattered and well worn look in soft neutral shades. I plan to use the same antique slip fabric I salvaged from last month’s project to make a long sleeved and full length underdress. For the sleeveless upper dress, I have a stash of vintage lace scraps to work with…perhaps even enough to make more than one of those…we shall see.;)

This is my fashion volunteer (since she’s exactly the same sculpt) while I patiently await my incoming girl in white skin.

And here are my supplies for this round:

And here is my inspiration. I love, love, love the lacy bohemian style!:love

    10. I've been waiting for this round! A lot of my dolls lean boho in their casual style. But my feeple doesn't have much to wear. I'll use this round to make her some more pieces. I'm going to do a 2010's boho for her. I'm thinking a lacey, maybe fringy kimono and a flower crown. Not sure if I'll do a dress or top & shorts. But I do have a fabric in mind. Just gotta dig it out!

    11. This round looks so great. =) Can't wait to see all the new projects !
Don't have any idea yet for my dolls, will try to join if anything pops in my mind. ^^

      • x 1
    12. I'm the same! I'd like to join if I figure something out :thumbup My poor boy is still nakie after several months :sweat I don't know much about Bohemian styles for men so I'll need to do some research and find a nice, simple and flattering design. If I go all out and make it too complicated I'll probably not finish again (shirt from a few rounds ago is still not completed :XD: And that was just a single piece of the outfit!)

    13. How about a simple shirt? This one is made from rectangles only, one for the front one for the back and one for each sleeve. Embroidery optional, of course. Not the best image, but you get the idea.

    14. Ooh yes! I could probably do something like that. The crinkled pants are neat too! Thank you for the suggestion! :3nodding:

      • x 1
    15. True to theme, they are tie-dyed using onion peels. :)

      • x 1
    16. Oh neat! Also, is the doll in the photo a 1/4 sized doll?

    17. Yes. He is a Doll Leaves Wish on the older body, so he is quite short, but he poses like a dream. The hands are Dika Doll.

      • x 1
    18. Awesome! The jointed hands were what I was wondering about. I've been trying to find some that would work well relative to my doll's large hands. I'm checking the Dika Doll site now. Now I just have to figure out which ones are which...

I think he needs the 1/3 sized hands but I'm not 100% sure :sweat

      $79 1/3 male hands A-Products-DikaDoll

    19. @Sanar For what it's worth, the ones my Wish wears are the 1/4 female hands (short nail version). Other than that I have no experience with their jointed hands. I do have a pair of 1/4 male Doll Family-H hands that are probably much closer to the size of the hand in your image, but we are getting off topic.

      • x 1
    20. Yes, sorry about that :sweat I can get carried away when I see things of interest to me, ehe.

      Ahem! Back on topic...

I went rummaging through my closet and found this top I don't wear. It has that interesting crinkled texture and is light and sheer, perfect for a comfy and loose shirt, maybe? The material looks similar to what I used before in my previous project so it will probably fray a lot. I'll experiment with some fabric scraps first to get the sizing and seam allowances planned out first before cutting into it. I'm not going to worry too much about designing. Just going to sew and 'let the magic happen,' so to speak :3nodding: (... sew to speak? :XD: I'll see myself out...)

Good luck to everyone with their projects! :chibi

      EDIT: Broken images... sigh

    21. Can you reduce the image size of them? I use Flickr and if they're any bigge image sizze than "medium" DoA deosn't like showing them. I don't know if its the same issue with discord.

If the fabric is light and sheer its certainly worth a try. It should drape nicely in dolly scale.

    22. This is my strategy for this theme as well.
      I've started on a skirt.
I'll see if I can make the waistband lie a bit better so that it at least gives the llusion of less bulk and I have to tame that bottom edge. But other than that, I think it's ready for embellishments (the fun part).

After that, I have no plan at all.

      • x 5
    23. That worked! Thank you so much Teddy! :thumbup

    24. @Sanar That fabric does have an interesting texture. I'm looking forward to see what you make!

      • x 1
    25. Excellent!

Yes, the fabric looks like some sort of thin crepe - it certainly looks worth a try.

    26. @Lillith I love that shade of green on the skirt! It has almost a forest spirit or fairy vibe. I see what you mean about the bulk there. Maybe a light, draped jacket could be layered over top to cover the waist?

    27. That's a very good plan B if I can't reduce it. Ideally I think I want to give her a short top and have her belly exposed, but if the waistband bothers me after pressing (and I have few other tricks up my sleeve to try if that is not enough) then covering it some how is probably the way to go.

    28. Sounds like a plan! I'm sure whatever you end up doing will look fantastic regardless :3nodding: I was also thinking a short top exposing the belly would look the best with that skirt.

    29. Then let's just hope I'm as good as I think I am.

      Edit for progress:
So... Two steps forward and one step back.
The hem is now behaving just fine, this is a good as I think I can hope for in this material and scale.
The waistband is a lot better, I can live with this.
But, when I relaxed the fabric it also hangs down further and the skirt is now too long. (She stands on a small box in the picture, so you can se how the kirt hang.) So next step is going to have to be removing the waistband again, shorten the skirt and remake the waistband, including the pressing and shaping. Ah, well, at least I know it will work this time.

    30. You could do a yoke waist insted of a regular waistband to avoid all the bulk of the gathers being at the waist
      [IMG]

      Teddy

      • x 1
    31. I did consider a yoke, but in this tiny scale, that gets bulky fast. The current waistband is made from a thin ribbon, simply folded over the gathered edge and stitched into place, a yoke would add two more layers to the thickness for the folded in seam allowances. And a yoke cut to shape would probably need som sort of interface too, to keep the bias cut sections from warping when stitched to the heavily gathered skirt fabric. That's a lot for a doll this small.
For reference, the finished waistband is about 5mm tall and sits a bit below her waist, so the gathers ends up in about the same place as in your picture, just without anything covering her belly.
But thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

I corrected the length of the skirt last night, so I am back on track. Now the decorations can begin!

      • x 1
    32. Lillith: would sewing elastic on for the waistband work or is the waist too small to do that?

    33. Elastic would be much bulkier than it is now, I think. And the skirt fabric is gatered so tightly that most thin elastics would not be strong enough to hold it. It took strong thread and a fair bit of force to get it to behave. And elastic tends to want to slip to the narrowest part of the doll body and this skirt is ment to sit below the waist.
But it's fine now, the current verion looks ok. I just haven't taken any pictures yet. The old water+heat+force formula worked fine once I had fixed the length issue. It's still a thick waistband, but it doesn't look too wierd and at least it's smooth.
Right now I'm doing a little bit of bead work around the hem to make it a bit less boring. :)

      Edit to add image:
I dug out a bikini top from the stash to give a better idea of roughly what I am going for.

    34. It looks good. I'm glad you managed to come right. It's so frustrating when things don't work out.

    35. I'll be sitting this round out. As you may remember, I moved cross-country in May to be with my fiance. A week ago, he broke up with me. So my plans for the month are to move cross-country again to be with family. Been an extremely crappy week, trying to hang in there. Best of luck to you all, thank you for keeping me company during an otherwise very isolated few months these past few rounds.

    36. Best of luck with the move. I hope it all fgoes as smoothly as possible.

I'll probably be sitting this round out (again) too. Even though I need tiered "peasant" skirts and other items for on of my girls and I ahve the fabric all ready to go. I haven't finished my dress from the previous round and the last thing I need is to be startign something new to not-finihs and add to the UFO stack.

    38. For this round I would love to make Esmeralda costume (From The Hunchback of Notre Dame). She is a gypsy so I hope it will be bohemian enough :XD:
My model will be Resinsoul Dawn, Maeve. Wish me luck!!

    39. Pattern selected! I've got raddollclothes's Renaissance Faire dress to work with, because I tried to make a pattern mockup and confused myself horribly - gathers are not my strong suit.
      Here's what it looks like:
And where I got it: Renfaire Renaissance Faire Dress Doll Clothes Sewing Pattern - Etsy

I'm going to do a black under dress, patchwork overskirt, and match the color of the corset to the overskirt - so one in green and one in purple. I'll probably go with black cording, and I'm going to modify the sleeves to be longer, although I'm not sure if I'll go full length or 3/4.

    40. Okay, so I’ve made some good progress. I decided to make my girl a pair of lacy tights, since I’m going for a lacy bohemian look overall. Although they won’t be seen, I had some stretchy lace in my stash so why not?

And here’s her completed underdress, something simple and a little rumpled looking with extra long and gathered sleeves for a bit of a distressed look, seeing as how her character is supposed to be somewhat haunted and spooky (but still cute!):XD:

    41. Adorable progress, @PoeticSoul! Honestly, the details no one else can see are usually the best ones <3

    42. Super cute! As a frequent wearer of lace tights myself I consider it an absolute staple.

      Perfect!

    43. @PoeticSoul What a cutie! And it is nice to have all the details, even if they're not going to be visible most of the time, I feel.

    44. I made a top!

    45. @Lillith Looks great! The beading on the edges is a nice touch.

    46. Yes, I agree. And I find tights to be a great alternative to plain undies on girls. Thanks!

You’re so right, and for this character they truly are a staple since the lacy tights (along with the underdress) will be worn by her routinely. Only the lacy overdresses will be changeable for the wardrobe of her ghostly persona.;)

Thanks so much! Her sculpt is the Dollzone Happy, and is aptly named because that’s exactly how I feel every time I look at her!:) I loved the sculpt so much that when they released the Happy 2, I just had to get one of those too who is destined to be the character these clothes are actually being designed for. She’ll be in white skin (because, yeah, ghost) is the only difference…that, and her eyes will be anime.

Thank you, and I agree. I simply can’t have something so young and cute running around with no underlayers…it would be unseemly!

That looks great on her! It’s a lovely fit and I love the beaded detail…so very bohemian!:D

    47. So I have some inspiration for this round. =) I decided to go on with Johana.

For the look, I will try to make a sirwal and a floating dress. I took some patterns on Missy's Imaginings and will see if I can make a thing that fit my girl. ^^' She's an old Dikadoll (didn't remember the mold...) so she has a huge booty. XD Found some cute fabrics that can fit the theme. So here we go !

    48. This little dress is so adorable. It fits so well and the silhouette is perfect. Can't wait to see the entire outfit when it's done :)

    49. My cat woke me up super early, so I figured I'd be productive and do some sewing in the five hours before work started since sleep wasn't going to happen. Got my pattern printed out and ADHD brain said no sewing. :sweat At least I have my pattern ready to go

    52. Does anyone have any advice on how to map out quilting a skirt? I've got /_\ -shaped pieces that will make up five tiers. I need the top of the top tier to be 40cm and the bottom of the bottom tier to be 75cm. How do I work out what angle I need to make the sloped sides? I never took geometry and it's been almost 15 years since I even took algebra, so I have no idea where to even begin with this. :sweat

    53. @Moonycat31 Wonderful. Well done!

@dm_sof I'm not sure I understand the question. Is it the quilting pattern or the garment pattern you are trying to work out?
If it was me I wouldn't worry too much about what the angles are in numbers, I would make paper pattern pieces based on the known measurements and just draw the connecting lines as needed.
Do you have an image of the design of the skirt? It may be easier to help if we knew what the end goal is.

From what you are saying I am assuming you are talking about a sewing pattern, if I am wrong, you can pretty much just ignore the rest.
So, if for example you wanted an a-line skirt made out of four sections (just for arguments sake) first devide the tope and bottom measurements with four. Draw a vertical line on the pattern paper as long as you want the finished skirt. At the top of that line, draw the quatered top measurment, making sure that it is at a right angle and centered on the length line. Do the same for the bottom line at the bottom, vreating a shape like an unevern H lying on its side.
Then simply connect the ends of the top lines with the ends of the bottom line and you have your angle.
If you want tiers, just divide the length line into as many sections as you want and draw horisontal lines straight throught the pattern there.
Mark the pieces and cut the pattern out. Cut all lines except the lengt line, but don't erase it as it serves as a grain line. If you want seam allowances included on your pattern, redraw the pieces on a new piece of paper, add the allowances and recut the pieces and you are ready to go.

If on the other hand it is the quilting you are trying to work out, you could make a paper pattern like before, only make paper pieces for all the skirt parts and tape them together to form the entire skirt surface. Then simply draw out the quilting pattern on the paper. Transfer it to the fabric and you are ready to go. It's easiest to plan it out so that you can quilt the skirt while it's still flat, especcially if you do it on machine.

    54. I’ve made more progress on this outfit for my incoming ghostie girl. I’ve finished a lacy overdress made entirely from tiny scraps all sewn together. This was the look I was after so I’m happy with it. I think I have enough little vintage lace scraps to do another one (in off white, creams, taupes, and browns this time.) So I’m going to give that a try.;)

    55. Lovely!

    56. @Lillith That was helpful, thank you! I ended up printing a second copy of the skirt pattern just to cut up, haha. I measured 4cm on the waistband and 7.5 on the hemline, traced between those dots to get my angled strip, and divided the height by 5 to create my pattern pieces. Then I cut out a whole bunch of little not-quite-rectangles, making sure to leave a seam allowance since they have to come together to make the size of the original pattern. Now I have fifty pieces of purple cotton to piece together, like a puzzle from hell.

    57. @dm_sof Glad to be of use! Best of luck with the puzzle. It does sound like it has potential to be really cool skirt.

    58. Thanks peeps for helping a fellow artisan in this thread. It warms my heart that people can find sewing help here when they need suggestions and possibilities. It not only helps them, it helps all of us because we all gain a little additional sewing knowledge when someone is in the process of problem solving. And that is exactly how this project thread is supposed to work.:)
