How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. Now it’s time to get caught up on some of the basics. That can mean absolutely anything depending upon your doll’s character. Perhaps it’s pull-on pants and a simple t-shirt, or that all-purpose little black dress your girl has been begging for. Or maybe your doll is a troll who needs some basic forest wear, or a fairy princess in need of a gown and wings, or a pirate longing for his 17th century finery with a tricorn hat! Whatever is basic to your doll’s character, this is the perfect project to join in on and get it done. Week 1: 11/1-11/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 11/8 to 11/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 11/16 to the end of November * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! Coming rounds: [ Round 129 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 130 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 131 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics) [ Round 132 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 133 ] Designer’s Choice! [ Round 134 ] Seasonal [ Round 135 ] Fairytale [ Round 136 ] Leftovers and Recycling [ Round 137 ] Vintage and Retro [ Round 138 ] Monochrome [ Round 139 ] Theater/Masquerade [ Round 140 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 141 ] Pick a Decade [ Round 142 ] Working with Scraps [ Round 143 ] Bohemian [ Round 144 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 145 ] Basics
Hehe, I feel called out. But, no, my poor troll will have to wait. (I am still working on his coat, allthough not very actively.) You see, I bought a new doll and she needs pretty much everything. Perfect for this round. So, please welcome Petronella. She is a Withdoll Emma. She needs some good basics. Underwear, socks and some tops and skirts, maybe pants of some sort. Preferably bright colours and/or bold prints. I think she is the kind of person who is allergic to boring stuff. We'll see how it evolves. I don't have a solid plan for her yet, so I think I'll just start making stuff and see how it goes.
I need to do an entire outfit for my most recent doll, Dream Valley Achelous; he's currently stuck borrowing clothes and a wig (the white wig I ordered for him didn't fit). He's been quite a project, he's the first doll I've dyed and it took a while to get it looking nice. Despite him coming out much darker than I planned, I'm content that he looks as even as he does and I don't intend to redo it anytime soon. I still have to finish his face-up but I have to wait to get some airbrush paints, so I might as well do his clothes in the meantime so that he can have something of his own. Here's the design I made for his clothes, it'll be white with either silver or gold as an accent. I'm still considering fabric choices and will probably not decide anything until I get to the fabric store.
Yay! New round! Once again, Kiryu will be my model~ Kiryu is a character doll I am customizing based on a video game character of the same name. For this round, I thought it would be cool to create an outfit inspired by the real life style of his voice actor, Takaya Kuroda! Spoiler: Reference Pictures I will attempt to make a few pieces according to his signature style: > Hat+Bandana (I've never made any hat before, so I'll keep the design simple) > Black tank top, or sleeveless top > Comfortable, wide leg, drapey pants (also black) > Fur Coat! > Black pendant necklace (depends on if I can find materials) He also likes wearing a lot of jewelry and is almost never seen without sunglasses I'll consider these as extras that I may make depending on if I finish the other things first and can find materials locally. I do really want to make his black pendant necklace though, so I'm going to keep an eye out for an appropriate pendant piece Here are my materials! The black fabric and grey fur I picked up today at the fabric store, but the other things I've had for a while. I probably won't use everything, but it's there if I decide to I have some elastic for a waistband, little beads, rivet thingies, rhinestones, and some silver embroidery thread! I was thinking I'd use the thread as a substitute for metal chain if I can't find any actual chain that small and delicate. I'm still deciding if I want to make a grey hat or black one. Then I have two choices for furs, the grey or the chocolate. I'll probably use the grey one since it looks closest to the reference picture If anyone has any thoughts or ideas of what to use, let me know!
@Alamentine What a handsome guy. @Sanar Ambitious! But considering the outfit you pulled off last month, I have no doubt you can do it.
I'm not sure how much sewing I'll get done this month (it is NaNoWriMo, after all) and I know I tend to lurk a lot and not actively comment on folks' things, but I am super excited to see all you guys do this month! Last month was breathtaking. Cheering you all on!!!
Well, I did something I almost never do…snagged an impulse buy in the marketplace! I ordinarily only shell preconceived characters but this little one made me totally fall in love with her on sight. I couldn’t help myself! She’s a Fairyland Realfee Toki I currently have on layaway so I could fit her into my budget. But you know me…that won’t stop me from starting on her wardrobe since she needs absolutely everything. Fortunately she started speaking to me right away and I know her style is dark cottagecore, knitwear with plant bits included, because she’s a forest elf. Her name is Brambles. Fortunately I have another Realfee in my collection who has kindly volunteered to be her stand-in model for this round. And I will be having fun…using socks exclusively. It’s one of my favorite things to do, entirely hand sewing, enjoying myself being silly with it. It will make for a wonderful occasional break during my month long deep cleaning chores in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday which I host every year. A bit of fun sock couture to break up all the hard work. It will keep me sane.
I'm hoping to join for this round as well! I've been wanting to join in for a couple of months now, but IRL obligations have gotten in the way of dolly sewing
@kaschan502 I feel this The first time I joined, I was still as hyped as I am now to do *all* the crafting... but realized I only had time for one thing... and then I didn't even complete that one thing But I still had fun trying! It's fun coming up with ideas and inspiration and enjoying each others dollies! If you'd like to participate don't worry if you are unable to finish an entire outfit Starting small is okay too!
Some great inspiration there, looking forward to seeing what everyone does! Hmm, I'm not sure what to do this round. I mean, all my Raccoondoll girls need socks as they have tiny feet that fit no shoes, and just when I was about to buy them all feet that might actually fit something, it occurred to me that if I just make some socks then my existing shoes might fit. Only took me about 5 years to realise, I'm dumb. So there's that, but I'm trying to think of something else interesting too! I'll see if inspiration strikes for anything else, I guess.
I can't wait to see it all complete and then Brambles wearing it when she gets to you!! As for me, I think I will watch from the sidelines. Though I have some dolls in need of basics, I think I'll work on faceups and knitting!
@PoeticSoul You are in good company. Petronella is a bit of an impuls buy too, or semi-impuls at least. This doll had been on my "maybe-list" for a long time and one popped up on the market place, nearly locally and at a very good prize, too good to pass up. And, yay; sock couture for the win! I wipped up a set of underwear for Petronella to get me started on this month. I think my current plan is to get some of the easy stuff out of the way and then see if I have enough focus and energy to do the trickier things (well pants, that's probably the only thing this month needing some proper mock ups). But plans can channge. I'll try not to over plan and just let things happen.
@Lillith Yay! That’s one amazing set of underwear for sure! I love the colors and the way that little black lace edge finishes things off. This is pretty enough to wear to the beach too.
@Lillith Yay undies! I like how you have the fabric nicely folded and sewn at the centre of the chest. It works really well with the direction of the fabric stripes!
@PoeticSoul Thank you! You are right, it does have a bikini-esque vibe to it. It was unintentional, but I don't mind. @Sanar Thanks! I love the effects you can get with manipulating stripes and checks on fabric. It gives an extra dimension and is a great way to keep plain patterns from being too dull.
@Cloudedmind Hehe, that's perfectly valid reason. Especially where I live, it's too chilly to have nakie dolls now They need to bundle up!
Once again, this is a round I really should join in with. Despite the 13 petticoats I made for a previous itteration of this round, there's never enough of something to go 'round all of my gang. Shirts/blouses/underdresses spring to mind, as do soocks/stockings... As ever, we shall see if I get the chance. Looking forward to seeing everybody else's, regardless. Teddy
Basics are some of my favorites to make, I never get tired of easy shirts and dresses. I've got to decide what doll I want to work with this round. I may ruminate on that for a bit, but hopefully I'll get something going! I might use more of the candy fabric I recycled during the last Pick a Decade round, I'm pretty sure I know where that is among all the things I still need to unpack and find places for.
I picked up fabric and some trim from the store yesterday so I've finally got to thinking about how I want to use the fabric. I decided to do gold so he's contrary to my other boy who wears black and silver. I've got a few different gold fabrics to choose from for the lining of the top. The white fabrics are a polyester and chiffon (I really like chiffon). I always use polyester as the main fabric, and I'm pretty sure I want to put some chiffon on the sleeves. I also have some fabric I cut out of a shirt I don't wear because I liked the design on it, I'm thinking about using it for the waist band of the pants and maybe a bit elsewhere. Here's a bonus picture of my cat Merlin having fun with some trim he stole.
@Teddy It's good to see you around again. I hope you are doing better! @Alamentine Beautiful fabrics. I am looking forward to see your project take shape. It'll be fabulous! Edit to add: I made socks. Now I am working on altering a dress. I have this forties or fifties inspired dress that I made for a JID forever ago for a themed contest and I never used it since. It doesn't really fit the style of the doll I made it for and there were som things that didn't turn out quite right. But the fabric is something that I think Petronella would totally gravitate towards if she saw it in a thrift store, so with that excuse I am fixing it up to fit her.
I finished the alterations. On the left is the dress as it were and on the right is what it looks like now. I had to shorten the bodice and take it in quite a bit at the waist. The doll the dress was made for is larger, flatter and broader, but luckily both shoulders and sleeves were close enough that I didn't have to take the whole thing apart, just the waistband. I also did some minor adjustments to the collar. It is still bulky, but not as bad. And, of course, now it needs a petticoat. I think a simple slip-type thing will work the best for this.
@Teddy I hope you do get the chance @Alamentine Ooh! That fabric and trim looks fancy! I can't wait to see what you make with it! @Lillith Love that fabric pattern as stockings! They're so fun and colourful The altered dress suits Petronella well! @foulmonster I really like the pink dress in combination with the belt and sheer stockings Also those shoes are adorable
@Lillith I love those stockings! That fabric is utterly amazing for this scale of sewing. And the improvement in the fit of that dress is wonderful. It fits beautifully now. Well done! @foulmonster Hagatha…what a fabulous name that is, so perfect! And those two dresses are super adorable and look great on her. What a fascinating character she must be.
I’ve been working pretty hard this first week of November, and I have some good progress to share. For my future forest elf, Brambles, I’ve managed to wrangle those socks into 3 pairs of tights and 4 turtleneck sweaters. (One set is modeled here by my Realfee Grannybelle) but I’m making everything to be mix-and-match. Next up is a couple of sleeveless jumpers (American,) pinafores (British.) I’m really having fun with this…I love sock couture!
@PoeticSoul Oh, that looks so good! What a lucky doll Brambles will be. Separates that can be worn in different combinations is a great staple for any warderobe.
OOOh! This roui d is off to a great start with underwear tights and frockage!! Yay - and cute seasonal warmth too! Yeddy
Funny thing, that. Bramble’s character is an homage to the BBC’s show “Midsomer Murders”. This summer was the hottest on record, and in Arizona that’s really saying something! We started watching Midsomer to help us get through the brutal heat…immersing ourselves in a world of pretty English cottages and cool, dark woods to give ourselves a bit of psychological respite from the heat. It helped! So I was determined to have a character who could have been part of that world, and that is what my little forest elf, Brambles, is meant to be…without the murders of course! So cozy, comfy clothing is definitely the way to go with her. (After this brutal summer, I no longer want to look at T-shirts and shorts!)
I couldn't sleep last night, so I did the only rational thing and drafted a pants pattern. Today I worked up the courage to make a first mock up to see what the damage was and to my great delight and surpise it fitted on first try! She can even sit in them, even if the pant legs do pull up a bit too much to look good. But no gapping or excessive pulling! So I have a solid base pattern. Now I just need to decide what kind of pants she would wear.
Oh yes. I am quite astonished, to be honest. I am not a natural when it comes to pants. Bodices; never a problem. Sleeveheads; makes perfect sense. Calculating proper width and angles to get the desiered skirt shape; a non-issue. Pants on other other hand, I never really worked up a feel for them. I mean, I can draft them, I know how they work on a theoretical plane, but I never could just look at a body and instinctually know what shape and proportions the pattern pieces should have. It's as if I have some strange blind spot. But I guess this proves that with enough careful measuring, anything is possible.
I've had a few pieces in mind for Cassandra, my Impldoll Dorisy, for months now, and the weather's finally gotten cold enough that I feel justified putting her in multiple warm layers. So far I've gotten started on an oversized flannel shirt, and I want to make a long-sleeved T-shirt as well. I've mostly been sewing for 1/6 scale playline dolls for the last few months, and I'm really appreciating the differences. On the one hand, it's a nice change having gentler curves, reasonable seam allowances, and pieces that don't completely disappear under the presser foot. On the other, I barely had enough fabric for the shirt, and the construction is more complex. I think I've figured out how to manage everything, though, and I'm looking forward to making more progress.
@Tira-chan Going from one scale to another is always interesting. They do have their pros and cons, don't they? I have finalized the pants pattern and picked out a fabric. Since the fabric is so busy I decided on skipping back pockets, but there will be a proper waisband and front pockets to make sure it reads as a finished garment instead of, I don't know, pyjama pants, or something.
As it turns out, I did have something to make! My new fairy needed an outfit, likely the only one she’ll have. I like the idea of having the one signature look. Like my realpukis. Though I did sew snaps on the back instead of sewing her into the dress I have a whole project journal for this girl if anyone wants to see the in progress pics!
@lully.lullers That's a wonderful outfit! So many lovely trims and material variety! The little socks! Amazing work!
Thank you! And lol the socks are the only thing I didn't make. They were originally a placeholder for shoes but I like them with the outfit!
@lully.lullers Super cute! She looks like a little flower fairy. Myself, I sit here and try to entertain myself while fray-checking about half a million little pieces of pants... Ok, it's only twelve, but it feels like more.
Aha! They are adorable regardless! I wish I had some progress to share. I realized that if I was going to make a hat that it should be sized taking in account the head circumference with a wig on... so I finally motivated myself to construct a temporary wig and just finished that. Normally this should be a 'yay' moment, and I would've posted a picture by now... but because of all the current drama going on with a now banned dollmaker... I'm just feeling a little resigned, I guess. I'm unsure if I can make new posts or share pictures of my doll now. I'm waiting for confirmation from the mods if that is still okay. If not, that's how it goes I guess.
@PoeticSoul The little set of cozy wear is adorable and they all look so good together. @Lillith I feel you about pants, I had so much trouble making sense of pants when I started doing them, I only done a few now and I always have to double check what edge is getting sewn to where. Yours came out so good though, it's such a relief when things work on the first try. @lully.lullers That dress is fantastic and the details are done so well. Your little fairy is adorable. I haven't got as much done as I could of, but most of the top is finished. I'm going to add trim and I want to do something decorative on the sleeves. I'll be adding that later though, I want to complete the rest of the outfit first and add all the decorative trimmings all at once. Here he is; the top is really long because I wanted it to trail a lot, too bad I can't get him to stand all that well, I haven't gotten around to sueding his joints yet.
@Alamentine Thanks! Time will tell how these turn out, but right now it's looking promising. Your coat looks great so far! Very dramatic.
@lully.lullers She looks absolutely adorable in that delightful fairy dress! All those wonderful trims and details make it truly perfect for a character from the fairy realm. Well done indeed! @Alamentine Wow! That coat is epic. It’s lush, beautiful and dramatic. I’m really looking forward to seeing the rest of this outfit. He certainly appears to be a fascinating character.
Your coat is looking great so far, Alamentine! Very regal! So, I have confirmation that I can still post my doll, which is a relief. Regardless, I've decided I'm going to continue the remainder of the round with my other boy, Alphinaud~ He's been a bit neglected this year and deserves some attention too Other than that, my goals for the round remain unchanged I'm not sure I'll complete everything that I wanted to, but I'm going to aim for getting the top and pants done at least!
I finished the pants. They turned out ok but I think this will be her only pair for a while. For some reason they just weren't very fun to make and it's kind of nice to have them out of the way. Now I have to figure out some nice top to go with them.
Those turned out really well. The pattern you devised fits beautifully. This fabric pattern you used is quite fun and playful, and I love the contrasting cuff detail. It adds a lot of personality.
Thanks! I decided on the cuffs when I noticed how much her knee joints lengthen the legs when bent. The cuffs can be folded down, so that I can make it look a bit more natural when she is sitting.
Here's Cassandra modeling my progress so far. I just got the sleeves attached. I wish the facing didn't stick out so much, but I didn't have enough of the main fabric for it... I think a light grey would have looked better than white, but white was all I had. Other than that, it looks fairly close to what I wanted. It's a little too stiff and new looking, but hopefully washing it will help with that.
Good progress so far! You can do an after-the-fact understitching from the side of the facing using a tiny prick stitch, making sure to not to let the needle go all the way to the outside of the garment. I do that a lot when the piece is too small for regular understitching, as is often the case with doll clothes. Another thing to do it to adjust the facing pieces of your pattern and remove a millimeter or so from the front and bottom edges. That will encourage the material to curl inwards. It won't fix the current garment, but it will minimize the problem the next time you use the pattern. Washing and handeling can do wonders for doll clothes. Well worth the effort.
Everybody's projects are coming along so great! I've finally decided what I want to work on this time. I decided my Lati Green lad could use some love. He's kind of an in-between size, taller and chunkier than standard YoSDs but not quiiiite as chunky as the 30cm MYou toddler-tinies. I'm hoping to get him set up with some comfy play clothes, at least a pair of pants but a shirt as well if I have time! I'm using some jersey knit salvaged from a shirt, I like the warm browns. I'm going to be improving upon a rudimentary test pattern I made, with no date on it but presumably almost a decade ago by now lol. Round 128 Basics, Lati Green pants by Jules B, on Flickr
@Tira-chan I love that fabric! It looks so cozy yet current…I swear I could see some youthful fashionista wearing this while strolling through my neighborhood. Well done!
I decided to join with Johana again this month. She really need a shirt to go with her pants from bohemian round. Decided to go with a pattern from Lomi's Playground (cause I'm sick and I don't want to think too much...). I had this lovely fabric (it was an old dress) and I think it will fit very well with her pants. I already started to sew but don't know how long it will take with my ugly nose and my headaches. -_-'
@Mamo I always had a soft spot for the Lati Green line. I don't see them around very often, but they are so cute and their size and styling was quite unique when they came out, long long before the KID and similarly styled child dolls. I'm looking forward to see what you make for him. @Moonycat31 Progress is progress, it doesn't have to be fast. I hope you feel better soon!
I came into an unexpected extra few hours of downtime this weekend, so surprisingly I'm already finished with the comfiest-looking pair of shorts I've ever made. I'd wear these in people scale, haha! The waistband ended up bulkier than I hoped, but it's alright. Round 128 Basics, Comfy shorts by Jules B, on Flickr Now I need to decide on whether I want to make a t-shirt, a raglan, or a hoodie to go with it...
@Lillith Thanks ! I really don't like being sick and can do nothing. :/ So I go slowly but it's ok for the moment. I sewed all the shirt. Now I need to sew sleeves and make finitions. =) I started a cloak in the bohemian round to go with her pants. I will try to finish it, just need to sew some lace.
I'm really happy with how it turns. =) I didn't know I will sew so fast because I'm very sick. ^^' But well... I don't like being inactive, it's a real problem with me. XD Maybe I'll change the ribbons on the back later but I like it this way. Anyway, now I just need to finish the cloak. =) And buy some boots for her lol. (and yes, she really needs a real wig lol)
