This is the newest round of the sewing project. How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. Now it’s time for us to get down to basics, whatever that may mean for your doll. Perhaps it’s that little black dress for a bit of classic dress-up, or a grubby pair of torn jeans and a T-shirt that’s your doll’s signature style. Maybe they need new leggings or a skirt…or your wizard or Jedi needs a new robe. Only you can decide what elements make up your doll’s unique style, so this is the round to make them that key wardrobe piece (or outfit) you’ve been meaning to get around to. Week1: 5/1-5/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 5/8 to 5/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 5/16 to the end of May * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! Coming rounds: [ Round 111 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 112 ] Eveningwear/Haute Couture [ Round 113 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 114 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei) [ Round 115 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 116 ] Designers Choice! [ Round 117 ] Seasonal [ Round 118 ] Fairytale [ Round 119 ] Leftovers and Recycling [ Round 120 ] Vintage and Retro [ Round 121 ] Monochrome [ Round 122 ] Theatre/Masquerade [ Round 123 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 124 ] Pick a Decade [ Round 125 ] Working with Scraps [ Round 126 ] Bohemian [ Round 127 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay
Well this is very handy. I need a full set of clothes to put on the Jude who won't be arriving for a while and this might actually kick my butt into gear. I have absolutely no idea what I'm making, whee.
Oh, this is absolutely a fun idea! I'll try and see if I can make time to dedicate to it. This is a lovely motivator!
Okay, I want to play. Here's Sophie again. I want to make her a new pair of sweat pants because I've ruined her last pair trying to get them to fit her better. I'm a total sewing noob, in case it wasn't obvious, clawing my way to competence one poorly ripped stitch at a time. To date the only thing I've successfully made from scratch is a pillow case. I've had some better luck tightening up some socks and the cami in the pic, but I only barely know what I'm doing. I did take a shot at this last week and I got as far as putting on a pretty good elasticized waist band (by my standards anyway), but I didn't like how they fit again... so I wrecked them in exactly the same way. So I'm gonna try again. I've learned from my failures... (I want the crotch to be higher, but I have to change the pattern instead of trying to do it after the fact because I lose the extra fabric). I have my fabric already... what I have only just learned to call a knit. (I have also realized I should have it running the other way.) ...but I won't really be able to get going till week 2 when I have some more free time, so I'm not really ahead of the game. Wish me luck!
Oh. Good. Grief! How has Basics come around again already!??! Well, I'll give it my best shot bt this month has already filled up for me so np promises Whether I manage anything or not, I'll be here admiring everyone else's work and cheering you all on. Teddy
What Teddy said! I have so many things to do that could fit into this category, but I have my hands full right now. I may still pop in with some little project and if nothing else I'll lurk and cheer you all on from here.
I will try to join and hopefully I will have something to show Odette (ResinSoul Xun) is going to be my model as always. I'm still deciding whether to make a new pleated skirt or a dress with a jacket. We will see how it goes!
Think I'll give this a shot. My girls need slopers so I can pattern quicker but I'll probably just do a sundress or such. My model is also named Sophie. She's been a little irritated that my Coco stole her outfit and she hasn't had anything her own for a while. Sophie by Scarf Queen, on Flickr
I'm honestly not sure what I want to do for this round! I might try out making some leggings or something, or actually make a simple top. Maybe a little dress? Too many options, lol. I'll be thinking about it!
I'm thinking my participant for this round will be Poppy, my little Xagadoll girl. The poor bebby is severely lacking in clothes, so I'm hoping to remedy that.
I'm going to hop in here. I have a little one (yosd elena! FINALLY!) who is in need of basic undergarments. A little star needs more than one pair of panties and one slip after all! I'm aiming for slip, petticoat, undies, and cami. Next month we're going to do pjs and such. This will give me a reason to start on some slopers for her size.
I'll be making simple bra, panties and stockings for my Bobobie Xun. I consider undergarments as basics.
I think I'll be sewing for Gypsy (DC Trista) for the next several months, this month some bloomers... if you know this body, it has big un-natural looking hip joints so fluffy bloomers will be good, but hoping to keep that belly button visible..... sewing project by mare joy smith, on Flickr next month a slip and my big hope is to make something fancy and winged for couture month... all from this gauzy gold fabric which I hope to embellish if my aging imagination, hands and eyes can manage......
And here I go! I’ve been working hard on completely re-doing one of my characters…an old Volks 4 sisters Megu from the very beginning of the hobby…literally 1999! This doll is extremely yellowed with age as you might well imagine, so when I was looking for a volunteer to try out a look I’m currently fascinated by…Japanese Shironuri (which literally means “painted white”)…she was the perfect choice. I loved the notion of people using their faces as a canvas to tell a story, and it perfectly suits Poetta’s character because she tells stories of the fairy realm in her poems. So this past week I focused on spraying her head (no more yellowing!) and giving her my version of an elaborate Shironuri faceup. (I used many colors because I wanted her head to coordinate with many different outfits, while only having to do her makeup once.) First things first, as an ultimate basic I will sew her a lavish wig from Tibetan mohair. And then I’ll move on to making her a loose robe, constructing the fabric myself out of bits and pieces of yellow sari fabric with a large artistic peacock print motif added. This is destined to be worn over one of her basic Lolita-esque dresses, becoming a basic part of her story-telling wardrobe. So basically, I’m seeking to tell a story through clothing. That’s the goal anyway.
I love her name and her background! Her face up does tell story about fairy realm. Can't wait to see her fully dressed
I thought I'd managed to get a sleeve set in and then I realised I'd managed to set it inside out, which was great. So have unpicked that and am now going to sew it in the right way around. Should not sew when exhausted.
I completely agree. When you start making silly mistakes it's a good time to retire for the evening or have a break. I did this last weekend and just left the mistake until the next day when I was more focused.
We've all been there. Bad luck! Sleeves are a pain - if something is going to go wrong with my sewing the chances are it will be the sleevils. Teddy
Good luck! I think I've done that on at least 50% of all my sewing projects... Is one TRULY sewing if you haven't sewn something on backwards? I think not. I'm going to take a staycation next week, so I'm thinking I might take stock of my small dolls and see who still needs some basics. I've been doing a lot of that type of sewing this year, but I almost assuredly missed a few of 'em!
Sounds like you guys are hard at work while I'm hardly working. I need to make up some slopers here for Aysel's size. I'll post the materials I'm using here tonight or tomorrow. I'm excited to actually get sewing again!
Ooooh, this is just what I needed, summer break is about to start for me and I have a whole list of things I want to do-- I know I want to make a sloper so I'm guessing that'll be first on my list, second I think I'd like to use some of my satin esc- fabric to make ...to make one of those uh--- like slip dresses? and then I think 3rd on the list I'd like to make a pair of skin color tights so that Naran can wear her black tights for longer periods if time ;_; I'm so afraid of staining lmao.
I've made a progress on her jacket however I don't really like the color matching so I decided to make another one with different approach
I love that jacket, it reminds me of the random jacket everyone has that doesn't go with anything, but is your faithful go to jacket.
Oh yes, everyone indeed has one of those jackets! The one you made is really cute, and the tartan plaid is very nice too. Your girl is fortunate to be getting such lovely new additions to her wardrobe.
I have finished the practice pirate shirt for Jude/Jarrad. This was about getting my head around the whole thing, especially the collar. Now I'm going to unpick the whole lot, make some edits (the sleeves were too long, the body piece is also just a tad long, the gussets need to be bigger, I actually think I want more gathering with the sleeves) and cut it out of a fabric with a better drape than the fairly sturdy cotton I was using. Also, boxers are in the works but they're hard.
Looks like you're off to a good start with the Mark1 version And who doen't like a billowy pirate shirt. Teddy
That shirt does look pretty good. What kind of fabric are you planning to use for the finished garment?
I've got two options from my fabric stash. One I think is actually lining fabric in creamy white and the other is a soft grey. Both are polyester but they've got a drape that I think will work better for the mass amounts of gathering in the shirt.
Thank you! I think the dress would looks better in it than the bright red color. Thank you. I will use the red jacket for something else. Still thinking what should that be You're right! I might had low key inspired from my mom's jacket she wears to work and I don't think it matches with anything she has. Awww thank you! I still don't know what would go with the bright red jacket though. The collar part is always confusing but your outfit is looking good so far. Can't wait to see the result! By the way, just saw your profile picture, are you a Dragon Age fan?
So here’s what I’ve been working on. I was very inspired by something I stumbled upon called “slow stitching”. I never knew such a thing existed, and once I found it, I fell down the proverbial rabbit hole investigating it. It’s supposed to be very relaxing and meditative, sewing entirely by hand whatever you want with whatever pieces and embellishments you want (like a fabric collage) with no worries about perfect stitches…just sewing for the joy of it. Nearly all the examples I came across were pretty quaint in nature, which just isn’t my bag really, but since this is my meditation after all, I figured I could gussy it up to suit my tastes and still reap the benefits. So I bought a bunch of beautiful sari scraps on Etsy (now, that’s the kind of fabric pieces that makes me happy!) And I thought, hey, why make “nothing” when I can make something actually useful for my doll? So I’ve begun to use the “slow stitching” techniques to piece together my own fabric and use it as a method of story telling. I’m truly enjoing the relaxing nature of it. Here’s my accomplishments so far.
Yes I am. In fact the doll that I want the most (Bimong's Narae) is intended to shell my Hero of Ferelden.
Your fabric is incredibly pretty!! I should also try slow stitching too. Oh woww, that's so cool! I'm so exited to see the final product. My sewing goal is to make Hawke's costume but that requires work with leather, fur, foam and chains which I haven't have any experience with yet. I also would love to make gray warden armors too!
Does it nd to match? Pretty much anything, I'd have thought - black trousers and a white shirt, a navy dress... Bright red is a statement colour that can dress up or dress down whatever it's worn with, It could even be worn with other red items if she wants to go for the monochrome look, or make each item a different colour for a brighy t and cheerful look. For example, I'm wearing bright red shorts today - with a kelly-green T-shirt, one yellow and blue striped sock and a purple shoe on the left, one green and orange striped sock with a yellow shoe on the right. If I need another layer, I have an orange hoodie or a royal blue one, either of which would work. How lovely. I'm too impatient for all that hand work. My version of this si crumb quilting - sewing all the too-small-to-use offcut from multoiple sewing projects back togehter to make a piece of fabric beig nough to us for a quilt top, or a cushion cover or a garment... but I do that by machine it's a lovely relaxing, largely mindless, thing to do. These are all offcuts from dolls clothes I've made, and will probably become a quilt for one of my doll beds when it's big enough: That's already beautiful, it will be stunning when it's done Teddy
Teddy is obviously our awesome fashion legend! And that quilt piecing is wonderful. If you find sewing by machine fun and relaxing, then that’s all that matters since it serves exactly the same purpose…sewing just for the joy of it.
I think I've finally settled on what I'm going to do this month, because at this point I need to just pick something; fretting over my options is just stressing me out, lol. So with that in mind I picked out a pattern from our collection that looks like it might be fun, and I'll be starting with a dress and loose vest for my incoming girls. If I finish that, I might make a shirt or another pair of heinous pants for my biggest boy who was my victimodel (lol) from Round 108. I'm on the hook for jury duty this week, so at least I'll have something to bring with me while I sit in the doldrums of the juror waiting room. ETA: here's my choices, the brown vine swirl returns again! As a vest this time, and the blue fabric will be the little dress, though I'll probably de-frill it at least a little bit. Round 110 selections! by Jules B, on Flickr
Wow. Y'all are good at this. So, as usual, my three days relatively free have turned into zero days, but I did manage to get something done. Here's what I did to the pattern (old on the left, new on the right): And here's how it came out: ...As you can see, there's still something a bit weird with the crotch, but at least I got the fabric going the right way! Here it is on: The back looks pretty good to me, but the front is a little bunchy. Maybe I need to extend the extra fabric a little more on the front pieces...? And then here's sitting: ...So clearly the back needs to be taller by about a cm. Soul Doll upper thigh bits pop out when they sit down, so the distance from their lower back to their heels gets significantly longer, which needs accounting for. Hopefully I can give it another shot soon. Thanks for looking!
@Errantry I'm not a pants expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I think the fit issue are that that pants may be a bit to tight over the butt and possibly a bit too narrow at the top of the leg, just where the pant leg meats the crotch seam. alternatively, if it feels like there is plenty of room in total, maybe there is a bit too much of the hip width added to the side seam rather than the inseam of the pants. Moving that width would give more space in the crotch area withough altering the over all size of the pants by much. When there isn't enough space in the pants, or when the space is in the wrong place, that is when you get that gap in the back. Since you are sewing in a stretchy fabric, you can probably get away with a less precise fit than you could with a woven fabric, but here is the thing: most knits will contract lengthwise as they are stretched withwise. This means that any place that gets stretched needs to be a little bit longer to account for that. Additionally, this will often resault in the fabric buckleing aroung less stretchy places, such as the front seam of your pants. A little bit of this tencency is always going to be there when working with knits, but defferent fabrics behaves differently, so it's sometimes difficult to predict. The right choice of seam also plays a part, but usually less so. You can probably solve a lot of this by adding just a little bit more width in the right spots and by adding a tight elastic waist band. The stronger elastic there will give the elastic fabric something to pull against when it stretches, making it favour to take the extra length from below instead than from the waist when it stretches, following the law of least resitence. Sorry, for just jumping in like this, take it for what it's worth and let me know if you need clarifications, decribing things like this is not easy.
@Lillith OMG Thank you! It's going to take me quite a while to parse all of this info into something I can actually picture in my pea-sized brain, but you're amazing for taking the time! I super appreciate having something to work with instead of just fumbling in the dark.
Welp, better late than never! I got all caught up in a Korean Netflix series, and since I had to read the English subtitles, I couldn't sew at the same time. But it was worth it! Vhei-wen's basic is his Jedi robes, so I'm going to continue with that. This is where I left off at. Vhei-wen's inner tunic by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Vhei-wen's inner tunic by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr I decided to leave the armholes open on the inner tunic, that way he has room for both his arms and his wings. Vhei-wen's inner tunic by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Of course, I may change my mind later on down the line. I liked some of the ideas that I was given before, I just couldn't decide which one would work with the way his robes should drape. Everyone's outfits look so amazing! Love the "slow stitch" @PoeticSoul, so colorful and sparkly! Great use of pieces-parts, @Teddy! I have to admit, I would LOVE to see that colorful outfit you were wearing the other day! I know that your dolls are all period dolls, but I was wondering, would you make something like it for one of your dolls? Hmmm...maybe I should make something similar for one of My Crew.... @Errantry, I use this video to make pants. Combined with what @PoeticSoul explained, maybe it will help you. I sympathize, I hate making stretchy pants! Don't worry about the mistakes, even experienced seamstresses/seamsters (a male seamstress) make them. You will find that the seam ripper is your friend! Ryu
So in a truly stunning turn of events I changed my mind again, but only because I found a dress pattern that was almost exactly what I wanted to make, with no alterations. I got all the pieces cut, and a mistake in cutting out the bodice the first time around means I have some leftover pieces that I'm going to try and make another little top with! Not sure how it'll turn out, may end up more like a crop vest or more of a bra, who knows lmao. But either way I've got all my pieces cut out, which has me feeling pleased as I've caught up with where I like to be around this time of the round/month. I've also got a tiny O-ring and some pleather scraps set aside to make a quick belt if I have time. We'll see! Round 110 pieces cut! by Jules B, on Flickr
I procrastinated on all the gathering by making mockup trousers and then real underwear. Which was fun because I had really stretchy material and Jarrad's hips are annoyingly floppy so they took a lot of adjusting to be really tight but also able to be got on and off. Trousers are like weirdly easier for me than shirts.
I finally finished my jacket/sweater that matches the dress! I also did some photoshoot and gave them gloomy feeling of a cozy lonely day Since I have some time left, I will make another dress that would go with my previous red jacket. Wish me luck
That turned out so cute! It’s truly a wonderful look for your girl. Good luck with the next dress because that little red jacket is such a win, she’s bound to look adorable in that outfit too.
I approached this “slow stitching” project planning to spend the entire month on it…just taking my time. But it worked up much faster than I imagined, and I was having so much fun doing all this hand stitching that I wound up finishing the project much sooner than I’d expected. The time just whizzed by. I loved the artistic nature of constructing my own fabric through piecing, and enjoyed the storytelling nature of it all because it so thoroughly suits this particular character (that of a poet who writes story poems about a fantasy realm she discovers beyond the hedgerow.) It all just felt magical to me as I was doing it and was so relaxing and joyous. I had every intention of adding sleeves to this robe, but once I tried it on her in its pre-sleeve state I discovered I loved it sleeveless, allowing the sleeves of her under gown to show. The poofy gathered collar took some bit of engineering, but in the end I got what I wanted. And her poofy, long, luxurious wig turned out just the way I’d hoped to add to that fanciful Shronuri look. Here’s the sleeveless robe lying flat after I’d finished my composition. To me it tells the story of the guardians of the gate…two peacocks who protect the entrance hidden along the hedgerow. They’re the pets of the head guardian, and frighten ordinary humans away with their eerie cries within the deep dark woods. And here is my Volks Megu, Poetta, in her lavish wig and story-tellng robe.
@PoeticSoul it's gorgeous!! I'll have to try slow stitching sometime, it sounds like it's a really nice way to recharge!
Yay! I'm impressed by your productivity. Excellent! It's gorgoeus and such a lovely idea for a storyteller to have garments that tell stories as well. Teddy
Sorry for the late reply! Thank you so much. I'm so happy to hear your kind words Truly gorgeous! She looks like she is really from fairy realm! Her hair, her skin and her outfits are complimenting each other so well. You did an amazing job I'm trying to make myself busy or I would get lazy all day Thank you!
Oh it is! I loved it, and I really enjoyed working on it…it truly brought me great joy, both with the physical interaction of it and the sheer freedom of creativity I felt. I thought the idea went well with her Shironuri look, and it only enhanced my inspiration and creativity even more. It truly became a joyous endeavor, and one of the most fun sewing projects I’ve ever done. I’m really itching to do more of these outfits for her. Thank you very much! It was a tremendous amount of fun pulling such an unusual look together and I can’t wait to try out more story ideas for her outfits and wigs in the future.
I'm mostly lazy but now that I'm working I gotta keep the momentum going until I'm switching back to sitting on a couch all day mode I finally finished a dress that match the bright red cardigan! Yayyy! I figured out that the only color that would go with it was white so I decide to make a simple white dress.
