Sewing Sewing for Centaurs!

Aug 19, 2023

    1. With all the different sewing threads running around (fantasy, noble, etc) I thought it wouldn’t be out of place for centaurs to have their own. It’s not a style like most of the specialized threads, but these bodies have their own unique challenges. Even if your centaur is half wolf or half griffon, please feel free to join! All sizes welcome! If it has four legs, it counts!
I labeled the thread as sewing, because that seemed the most likely content for it to attract, but knitting, crochet, or jewelry are also welcome.

To start off, I’m working on an outfit loosely inspired by the Fairyland Lucywen fullset. My model is an unnamed Resinsoul Dawn in their “normal” skin. I spent the afternoon working on an underbust corset using the tape method. It let me easily avoid the horse rump. Next is a top, some skirts, and some leg ornaments. Not necessarily in that order. I did some top stitching (not shown) and still need to insert boning and cording.

Also featuring the traditional Tube Top of Shame that keeps my girl from scandalizing the family.

    2. I’ll have to keep an eye on this thread, I have a second-hand 1/6 centaur coming in! I really should get back into sewing :3nodding:

    3. Your corset looks great so far! I love the fabric you've chosen, it's perfectly in scale.

I own several centaurs, I'm kind of addicted to them at this point, so I've experienced the highs and lows of centaur sewing. Here's a few examples of stuff I've made!

Silver shirt and double-layer coat that goes over the horse body, for my Luts centaur Bory.

Sheer sparkly robes for my DC Noah.

And just in the last week, I made this outfit out of silk and leather scraps for my DV Dean.

What I've learned, above anything else, is that you have to just lean into the weird shape of the horse/whatever animal body. It goes beyond just measurements, they have strange angles too. Also that I need more girl 'taurs, because I want to make centaur dresses.

    4. Started trying to make some clothes for my new boy, who's also my first (cervi)taur.

[IMG]shift by Cryptic Cryptid, on Flickr

I modified a shift pattern that a friend made, trying to shorten it up, because the normal length shift ended up looking like a nightgown on him. I screwed up on the keyhole neck, so I improvised with some bias tape. The end collar reminds me of a Star Trek uniform, a little. Overall, I'm pleased with it as a very basic sort of shift. The stitching on the hem is too big and messy, but since the collar was already wonky I just wanted to have a test shift, to see how the overall thing looked and fit. I feel like the belt helps a lot, keeping it from just billowing around him.

    5. You might take some inspiration from Donna Parr's comic about a centaur community, Stinz.

    6. Made a new, more colorful tunic to go over the shift. (The shift is still underneath and my current lack of dressing hands means the sleeves are kinda bunched up around the bicep.) Still can't quite do the keyhole neckline right, but it's at least a better attempt than my first try.

    7. It took a while to get back to it, but I finally got most of Prism’s outfit done. She’s got three layers of skirts. Not shown well, but the biggest is asymmetric. I did intend to make her a shirt, but the tube top of shame worked well with a sweater I crocheted for another doll. She’s going to wear that for a while. The end result was kind of a rose fairy ballerina look. At this point the girl needs clothes. I can be picky about the aesthetic a different time.

@BlackSheep Thank you and yours look amazing! The outfits look so natural on the centaur bodies.
@Cryptid The tunic and shift look great!

    8. Hello, I'm waiting on two centaur dolls. I want to sew for them, but it would obviously be a pretty big challenge, especially as I've only done things for human shapes ;^^ Does anyone know good places to find patterns for centaur dolls (long shot, I know) or even look at how others have styled their own for inspiration?

This is Donna Barr's comic character Stinz. You can find a lot of images about Stinz and his entire culture from her comics of the same name.

    10. I hope you can get some interesting pattern links!

I've seen female centaurs dressed in dresses fittted to the human part but with a long skirt - one with a train might be even better. Males I've seen with some sort of kilt for the lower front part (I guess they ignore that a male centaur would actually have its *bit* in the rear of he horse part. I've also seen males with clothing on the human parts down over the human bottom, and a decorative drape like a saddle pad or runner on the horse's back. That all said, there's also the question of what size your centaur is - large doll, mini or tiny.

The human part could be covered by human tops/shirts, but the horse part - You might be able to make a simple pattern for something that starts off on the style of a fitted horse stable blanket that goes back down to the horse hocks, and fancy it up somehow.

I will say I've never seen anyone try and make a pair of trousers for four legs. But a suited centaur would be fabulous --

You can try a general forum search for centaur too, for pix.

    11. @aihre - thanks for the link! Threads merged!

    12. Aww, he's cute. I'll look into him later.

Thank you very much for the response, and also for merging the thread. They're both ~50 cm kid dolls. One of the centaurs I'm waiting on, DC Alan, comes with trousers in his fullset. I'm very interested to get them and see how they're made. Stable blanket sort of thing is a good idea :)I've also thought about one of those "dresses" with deep slits on the sides, I wonder if it would look good to make one with a long piece of fabric in front and one in back to kind of hang over the human part while still draping the horse body nicely, too. Well, my best option is to look over this thread and people's dolls and experiment with a muslin when my boys come home <3

    13. The ladies in Stinz's village wear German blouses and bodices, with a half skirt and long apron in the front and sometimes a bustle going over their back.

Here is a very busy lady.

    15. @BlackSheep That orange outfit is lovely! It really brings out the exotic feel of a centaur.

    16. @lutke Thank you! I'm still pretty proud of that one. :)

    17. A preview of what I'm working on right now: a combination of a gates of hell surcoate and medieval horse barding. My thinking is that this will be her fancy dress, for wearing on special occasions and trips to the larger, adventurer-focused town. I initially tried sewing down the straps crossing over, only to find that got wonky fast. So I've glued all the other points where things cross over, and I'm letting it all dry before doing some fixing tomorrow.

    18. @Cryptid oooohhh I like it so far! I assume her tail magnets on to make it easy getting it on and off? I should consider some garments/accessories that go around the tails- at least on my two whose tails come off.

      • x 2
    19. Yeah, the tail is just on there with one big magnet, so it pops on and off with no trouble. I tried to use the magnet that's set into her body as my guideline for where to space the ribbon when sewing/gluing it in place.

    20. I'm back once again with a new outfit for Kestrel, my Luts Yul (KDF45 centaur). His character comes from a northerly, often-cold climate (like a tundra/steppe) so he needed something for tromping around and hunting in the snow. I tried to use natural and natural-looking materials for the most part. The coat is very, very loosely inspired by a Mongolian deel.

A friend of mine pointed out that the outfit is aligned with the colors of a male American kestrel. Entirely unintentional, but I'm happy about it.
