Setting Eyes: tips on removing and replacing eyes

Apr 11, 2005

    1. You CAN remove the back off the eyes if they really annoy you, but be carefull of the acrylic cracking as it's known to happen. I leave the backs on personally as it makes to much easier to change the eyes and position them. But yes you can take the back off if they get in the way or what not.

    2. Hi everybody if this is wrong in this forum please move me. I was wondering is it safe to use Faber Castell Knetgummi art eraser in hilding the eyes on your resin ladies or guys? I dont know what to use please help me out.

      Thank you

      KC

    3. You mean the grey kneaded erasers, right? That's what I use in one of my boys. Works great. ^_^

    4. Hi yeah thats the one i have the grey one just saw that they have other colors too. Since there wasnt any grey anymore I thought the safest would be pinkish color. But would try the grey first.

Thank you so much for the input.

    5. I use Sculpy. It's easier to get in my area.

    6. I use mack's silicone earplugs it's clear and available at most drugstores

    7. i use the silicone earplugs as well. I got mine from wal-mart, personally. I think they work absolutly fantastic. :D

    8. I also use kneaded earser but these earplugs sound good. I'll have to find those and try them!

I used to use sculpey but it's so messy and dries out.

    9. Trust me- go with the erasers. There have been many horror stories on earplugs and sculpey, that it really isn't worth taking the risk. You could be one of the lucky ones, but the same goes either way. Any of the colors of the erasers should be fine. I use the white erasers, but I don't think there are many oils or anything that would matter about the color in the erasers.

    10. Hi all, I'm a newbie to BJD I have my first one she is an AOD Fei. My question is how difficult is it to change the eyes. Im afraid to try for fear of spoiling her. If anyone has a link of a tutorial I would be most greatful. Thanks :)

Me: Use the pads of your fingers and gentely press them back in.

Me: Turn your bdj forward and wiggle them into place then press gently but firm into place.

Me: Soon you'll be changing them all the time and driving your kid crazy:lol:.
      Xenos: *_*

    13. Here's a question that I've always wondered about, I hope that it's okay to ask it here in a thread about eyes :sweat

What is it, exactly, that makes an eye have tracking effects?
Is it the height of the dome?
      Or the recessed pupil?

I have some acrylic eyes that have high domes and recessed pupils, yet they don't have tracking effects at all.
On the other hand, I have some glass and urethane ones that follow you like crazy even though they don't have high domes.

Does it simply come down to the material at the end?

    14. What kind of eyes are those?
I'm dying for some tracking eyes.
      :D

    15. I heard that Gumdrops are real good at tracking, but the ones that I have which chase you are:
      Hitomiya glass eyes
      Mystic urethane eyes

I'm still a newbie when it comes to eyes ;)

    16. Tracking if I recall right, is really the shape of the pupil, Most of the time it's a flattened circle, but in the case of eyes that track it's a full sphere, which therefore looks like a full pupil no matter where you are unlike the aforementioned which look like a flattened circle from side views.

    17. For tracking eyes, the most important is the deeph and in what the eye is done.

I'm agent for gumdrops, and have tried almost all kids of eyes.
For me the best are : Zoukeimura (Volks glass eyes), Gumdrops and Mystic eyes.
Gumdrops & Mystic eyes are in urethane.

    18. cats10 and dark_angel,
Thank you so much for the replies!
Now I can finally stop wondering why two pairs of seemingly similar eyes do not have the same effects.

I'm going to get myself some Gumdrops when the preorder opens next!!

    19. Okay so i have new eyes for my doll and I dont know hoe to chnage them

    20. Hmm..From what I've seen, you take off the headcap and get to the eyes that way.Are they kept in with putty/blu tac ect or hot glue?

    21. For eyes, pop open the doll's headcap (should be held in with magnets) and you can either fidget about with removing the doll's eyes while the head is still attached to the body - could be difficult with the S Hook in the way - or you can take the head off the body by using pliers or something similar to grab onto the S hook and twist it round by 90 degree so it comes out of the 'groove' it was originally sitting in. Don't release the two loops that are looped onto the S hook though ^^;

For hands and feet; just pull on the parts until you can see the elastic string, then use something (a pen, a chopstick, whatever you have in hand that won't damage the resin) and pop it into the loop; it'll stop the elastic from falling back inside the body while you unhook the feet/hands and change them.

    22. With the eye putty (What ever you use) be sure that is won't stain the resin. There is a thread that has safe things to use. Or if possible, just use what they already have.

    23. Well, I'm not trying to ask how to change their eyes as I already know the way. But I am just curious one thing as I've seen a lot of people doing that. Why you change your kids eyes have to remove the head along? For me, I don't, as I just remove the head caps and change their eyes like that. xD I just want to know what makes you remove their head to change their eyes... LOL

Or share along how you change your kids eyes in a way that won't harm them or anything. ^_^

If there's double post over this topic or this topic ain't suitable for here, Admin may delete it or lock it for sure. :)

    24. Some dolls the S-hook that holds the head on is connected to the skullcap, thats the only reason I can think of.

    25. Or with some dolls - especially the smaller headed minis and tinies - there just isn't enough space in the head with the S-hook in, so you have to take off their head to have a bit more place for your fingers.

And sometimes it's just easier to check the eye-positioning when you can turn the head however you want without taking your hand off the eyes - that's a bit harder if you have to manipulate a whole doll^^

I personally don't take my dolls' head off if I only want to change their eyes - but if their head is off anyway (for a faceup or body-swapping) I prefer to put in the eyes before I put them back on their bodies :)

    26. Depends on the doll.

If it's easy to remove the head I usually do, because it's generally way easier to position eyes without a big old s-hook in the way. My minisup's head is awful to remove and put back on, so I never take her head off if I can help it, though (and she doesn't have an s-hook, just a crossbar across the neck opening). On the other hand, my bambicrony's head is small enough that it's nearly impossible to position her eyes with the s-hook in the way, so I always remove her head to change her eyes. So basically I do whatever's easiest.

    27. I see... cause I seen some ppl here they took off their kids head even is big dolls not just small one. I remember last time when I tried to position their eyes head off, yes is easy, but when I put the head back on the body, the hook actually move the eyes and end up I adjust inside the head without removing the head.

Ain't is the S hook or the ring hook will move the eyes?

    28. All of my dolls are CP and are extremely easy to take their heads off and despite the huge amount of room inside their head I still take off their heads to change their eyes.

I really have no clue why xD. I think it's just because I'm so finicky with my eyes being just right that I want to be able to check from all angles and that's easiest without the head on.

Of course. Generally I'll take their heads off for every little thing. Tee-shirts made to go over their heads? Head comes off. Eyes needing a change? Head comes off. Bent eyelashes need some straightening? Head comes off. Etc etc. xD.

    29. if the eyes don't have stems, probably not. i really don't see the point in stems, i find all they do is interfere with neckpieces when you move the head

    30. Yup... that's true... eyes that with stems sometimes I feel is soo irritating. Every time I finish adjust the eye and put back the headcaps, the hooks sure moved the eyes. >_< That's to me... xD But somehow, I got minies and SDs so I dun usually take off their heads even thou the eyes with or without stem. I'm lazy I guess... :sweat

    31. I read that the basic Iplhouse bjd comes with whatever eye color they place, but I have to have a dark-eyed doll, so in case they send me a doll with different eye-color, can I pop those out and replace them easily?

    32. Yes, definitely. Their eyes are not permanently affixed - they're separate. If you get new eyes, you can just take the old ones out, and either use the putty that they have in them again, or use white sticky tack, or silicone ear plugs.

Just make a long, thin "snake", and put it around the eye like a donut, then stick them in, and position until you like them. Super easy.

    33. So you can "re-use" the same putty that already comes with the doll? I thought that once the eyes were taken out a "fresh" putty was necessary.

(My doll's eyes, although I like the color, aren't placed just the way I want tem, so I'm thinking I'll want to correct that in the future)

    34. no you can reuse the puddy, many people dont, but some do. It wont hurt the eyes or the doll. I use silicone ear plugs, for mine and have resues it when repositioning the eyes and never had a problem

    35. yep...i have changed my Volks dolls eyes a lot...and have reused the putty i have in there to hold the eyes in :)

    36. You can take off puddy from the old eyes, put it on the new eyes and put them into place xD
Trust me; if I can do it, you can too.

    37. it does seem easy, you don't even have to take the head of if you have an msd size or bigger doll.

    38. Very easy! I change my friends eyes for her doll all the time! She can change the eyes in a few seconds. The only 'hard part' would be making sure the eyes aren't crossed or in funky directions.

    39. It's super easy to change them. I personally find it easier to position them well when the head is off the body, though. I turn it all around, squint at it, look at it upside down and in a mirror... and eventually just give up and say "close enough!"

    40. Easiest thing I've had to do with my doll yet XD Personally I take the head off to reposition them because the S-hooks gets in my way (I have big hands >_<) but you don't need to take the doll's head off to do it, its super easy ^_^

    41. Yep, it's really easy. My very first BJD came with one eye knocked back into her head from shipping, and I had to fix it. I totally didn't know what the eff I was doing and I fixed it just fine. Just be sure to get some eye putty... you can get it on ebay if noplace else has it. Also, look up bjd eye tutorial on youtube and you can find a video or two of someone demonstrating.

    42. It's so easy to take the eyes in and out. I personally like using a kneaded eraser. I've found it keeps the eyes in there wonderfully. I just buy a small square of it and I can use it for at least two or more dolls. :3 I'm one of those people who hates the feel of putty so I immediately change it out for kneaded eraser when I get my dolls.

    43. this is probably silly, but can anyone post a tutorial on how to replace eyes on a BJD?

    44. Eyes are easy.

Step One: Take off the wig (if it's got one on) and take off the headcap. Easy right?

Step Two: Look in the head. You should be able to see the back of the eyes and the putty holding them in. Push on the eyes from the front, to push them into the head. This helps loosen the putty and gives you more eye to hold onto.

Step Three: Pull the eyes out. Peel the putty off them and try to use it to clean the bits off the eyes. I suggest squishing it all together and working it to make it more pliable.

Step Four: Take the putty and seperate it into two halves that are about the same size. Roll each half into a sort of 'worm' shape, like you would with play-dough, but just in your hand.

Step Five: Take one putty 'worm' and wrap it around the first eye and put the eye into the empty hole from the INSIDE of the head, so when you look at your dolls face, you can see the iris and pupil. Press the putty against the inside of the head firmly, all the way around, as best you can. Repeat with the other eye.

TA DAH! You have changed the eyes. Very easy. Now you just position them slowly from the inside of the head, I nudge the stems around a bit while facing the head, and then press the putty again.

I hope this helps and is pretty clear. ^-^

    45. Yep, that's how I do it too! Only most of mine have flat back eyes so there are no stems to position. That makes it slightly more difficult to get them to stay where I want them, but only slightly. I use a bit more sticky tack with flat-back eyes than with round ones.

It's one of those things that SEEMS more difficult than it ever is. Open the head, take out the current eyes. Either re-form the old putty into a snake or use new (kneaded eraser, silicone earplug, sticky tack or eye putty) and form it into a snake. Put a bit around each eye, and stick them in the head. Position them and press down the putty to make them stay better. Easy!

    46. I can add from experience that dolls with deep eyewells are much easier to change and position eyes on than dolls with shallow eyewells. I hate having to change Kiyam's eyes due to that. x_x

    47. XD I wouldn't mind flat-back eyes, but I PREFER full rounds, because they're easier to move around and position.

    48. Thanks KaireChaos!

I am thinking of getting DOD's new Crystal Acryllic Eyes. I hope it's worth it.

I was worried about changing eyes since I know DOC don't use magnetic headcaps. >_<

    49. DoC's are attached to the S-hook then? Hmm. Both my boys are magnetic head caps, but if you can get that headcap off, then you shouldn't have a problem. ^-^ My Liina has some dollmore eyes that are awesome and fabulous. There are even tutorials on youtube for changing the eyes, if you want them.

    50. If the S-hook is attached to the headcap, then I'd recommend getting some locking forceps. They make things MUCH easier. Just pull up on the head (while holding tight to the body - you'll have to use your legs or get help with that) then carefully clamp the elastic with the locking forceps. That will give you enough slack and room to unhook the headcap and do what you need to do. It can be done without them but they make life much easier.

    51. I finally decided to buy new eyes for my Angell-Studio Cinderella. I thought that since SOOM was so popular, I'd try them. I ended up picking out double-dome spotted magenta eyes. I went to the AS site to double check on the eye size. It said 18mm. So I order 18mm.

I get them today... and they are huge. Not only are they much wider, but the clear bump is larger, too. I figured, "Well, they are made of different things, I'll just try them." They don't want to even fit in the socket. The sculpey is between the resin and the white part of the eye. Because the clear bump is so large, it pushes it away, I'm guessing.

To me, they seem entirely too large. Because I cannot even see a bit of white at corners of the eyes. If I try to fix them to do so, they do weird things and make her look.... awful.

The thing is, I ordered 18mm because AS said she needed 18mm. Are SOOM eyes generally larger then other eyes? Should I have ordered 16mm instead? Do you think that if I ordered 16mm they would be too small? Would a SOOM 16mm be the size of an average 18mm? Or are these actually just fine and I'm just over reacting just because they are different?

This is so confusing for me, because I've only ever had eyes for dolls that I was given with them. I've never tried others. I don't own any MSD sized dolls, so I don't have any 16mm eyes... my friends don't have any....

I just don't want to send them back. Wait for new ones. Possibly not like them. Send those back. Get new ones... that would be so much wasted money. And I already paid $28 for them. I just need... some guidance. There are so many people here, with more experience and who have tried SOOM eyes for their dolls... Which is why I'm hoping that a few people will answer me. It would be greatly appreciated.

    52. I'm not entirely sure on this. I have all 14mm eyes (for both my MSD and my Super Gem, weird as it is). I checked the Soom eyes and checked two pairs of my glass eyes. The result? They are smaller than one pair of my glass eyes and nearly the same to the other.

If they bother you, you should be able to sell them on the marketplace or bring them to a local swap. ^^

    53. I haven't had anything but Soom eyes so I don't think I'll be much help in the comparison area. :)

Maybe you could just move both eyes toward the outside of her head if you can. I think Soom eyes are supposed to portray a bit of the "big eyed" look.

      Hope this helped.
      Astolat

    54. Soom eyes are in most of my dolls and they are the best at any size. I don't have a problem with them once they are inside their heads I just use the eye putty to hold them in and they fill up the eye well completely so there are no gaps on the sides of the eyes. Soom eyes are going to be a little bigger since they are made of silicone instead of glass or urethane which some times those type don't fit too well in most dolls heads. Position of the eyes inside the head is another factor too.

    55. I was trying to make it so she wasn't cross-eyed, but I was having a rather difficult time...

Someone suggested that I look at my DoD Ducan's eyes, because on that site, they say they use 16mm eyes.

His 16mm eyes look the same size as her old glass eyes. @_@

So maybe I should have gotten a 16, so that I could better place them in her head...

EDIT: Well, I took them out and tried again. If I try to put them in straight, the bubble prevents the white from even touching the inside resin. Then they make her look like a bubble eyed fish. The closest I can get to straight, is the picture up there.

Does anyone know if 16mm SOOM eyes fit well in an SD?

    56. In my experience, Soom eyes are generally about the same diameter as glass or acrylics, but usually the "dome" part is higher. I wonder if your Cinderella came with 16mm eyes and the measurement on the site is an error?

Whether 16mm Soom eyes fit well in an SD-sized (60cm) doll is entirely dependent on that sculpt's particular eyewells and eye shape. I have 60cm dolls that wear 12mm and some that can wear 20mm. You might try asking other Angell-Studio owners in this thread: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...ngell-Studio-Doll-Discussion&highlight=angell

You might also try the single-dome eyes, since the dome is lower it allows the white of the eye to sit closer to the outside portion of the eye. That might help the eyes sit better in her eyewells.

Good luck! Eye sizing and placement can be one of the most frustrating and tricky parts of getting a new doll. :sweat

    57. I pretty much always go a size smaller than the company site says they take. Companies seem to really like putting huge eyes in, and most (to me) look MUCH better in a size smaller. One of mine is wearing eyes TWO sizes smaller, you can't even see the whites at ALL in the size they recommend for him. So that might be part of the problem. The rest of it probably is the high dome. I have a pair of 14mm Soom eyes and they work fine in the boy I have them in, but they are single dome. I do find all the silicone ones I've seen are wider in the white part, but generally the irises are around the same size, though all eye companies have slight variations there, too.

    58. in my experience soom eyes are standard size. Another general rule of thumb for almost every doll is that whatever size the companys say they take you can always got down a size. Some people do this for the smaller eyes give a more mature look. But generally one size smaller is still wide enough to cover edge to edge on the eyes, but two sizes you run into some potentials of gaps. I'm for sure 16mm soom eyes would work in her perfectly fine.

    59. Thanks, you guys!

I decided, after the fish eye look I witnessed... to email SOOM. ^^; I mean... if these SORT OF fit... then a size smaller couldn't hurt... I put my YoSD's 14mm in her and they were small. So... 16mm it is, then.

Could be the fault of the double dome... but the spotted magenta didn't look as nice with a single dome. Woe is me. :p

    60. Uh, are you sure that Soom is going to take them back? The order wasn't an error on their part, so I'm not sure they'll just switch out the eyes for a smaller pair for you.

Anyway, I've given up trusting the companies' suggested eye size. Like AmyAngel, in my experience they are always too large. When I'm getting a new doll I tend to do a lot of searching around to find out what eyes look best. If the gapping these caused bothers you (it sounds like it does), you should be on the lookout for low dome eyes. Even Soom's single dome eyes have a fairly high dome... I've found that eyes with lowest domes tend to be glass. But they all vary a lot, you just have to do lots of research! :sweat
