Casting Selling BJDs cast in materials other than resin?

Feb 24, 2007

    1. I'm honestly not sure where or how to even look for a thread on this topic, so if it's been asked please point me in the right direction, and if not then I hope this is the right forum in which to ask it! ^__^

      For medical reasons resin-casting is impossible for me. I know that theoretically I could have my work cast by a third party, but apart from the massive added cost and inconvenience...I really like the idea of casting my own dolls anyway. It's more personal, you've got a much better handle on quality-control, and it makes every doll feel very special.

      I'm proficient in mould making and casting for/with slip (as in ceramic/porcelain/clay), and I was wondering...if I were to cast some of my dolls in this fashion...would I be allowed to sell them here? I know there's trading in Dollfie Dreams on DoA, and they're neither resin nor strictly ball-jointed...but that's a very old exception to the rules.

      I suppose what I'm asking is, if my work follows all the other guidelines (Asian-style, ball-jointed, etc)...would it still be DoA-ok in china rather than resin? Or is that pushing it ^^;

      Thanks to anyone who can help,
      ~moomintroll

    2. I'm sorry to hear about your problems casting in resin, but unfortunately BJD cast in any other medium would not be allowed in the Marketplace here on DoA. The Dollfie Dream dolls were already on the forum when the criteria were put into place, which is why they are still allowed.

      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :(

    3. *sigh* I thought as much... Ah, well, thanks for letting me know! ^__^ I thought it was worth asking, 'cause I know there have been discussions about Naruto Dolls and such on the board before. Maybe I should further investigate French resin; someone mentioned that that wasn't toxic for sanding purposes, though I suspect the actual casting-process still is...

    4. So that means we can't even post about them if they're made out of something thats not resin? Darn...My boys head was looking so good too...It's made out of plaster. :atremblin

    5. moomintroll, even if "french" resin is less toxic than regular resin, the dust is still really bad for you. Also the chemicals in the uncured stuff is pretty nasty as well, best to check the MSDS for each product you are looking at.

      Aiowen, a doll head made of plaster is pretty fragile. You could still post him in the artist subforum as a work in progress, I think.

    6. Thanks twigling. I think pretty much my only option is to have somone else cast my dolls, if I want them in resin...

      And as I understand it, as long as it's an Asian-Style BJD, any medium goes in the Artist subforum. After all the original form of the resin casts is always made of something else.
