Repair Secondhand Dust of Dolls Zouh Spun Crackling

Aug 11, 2022

    1. I received a Dust of Dolls Zouh Spun from eBay today. She has crackling all over her body and the ears as well. Does anyone know what this is or if it can be repaired? The doll had a faceup and body blush from the previous owner in Australia.

    2. Maybe, just maybe it's the varnish that is coming apart? Those cracks don't look like structure damage.

    3. Hi, it looks like the sealant/varnish is damaged and is coming off the resin. : ( It's come off in places already, like the spot on the neck and under the chin area.

It's not noticeable from further away and the resin under the sealant should be fine, but if you want a not-crackle glazed look the existing layers will need to be removed and the doll's faceup and body blush repainted.
      Sorry : (

    4. It looks like the sealant is cracking a bit. You can probably protect the faceup and blushing by spraying on a fresh coat of sealant.

    5. Thank you everyone for the replies!!!! :D I really wasn't sure.

There's actually more cracking than what the pictures show and in more places, it's hard to take pictures of. This is a small sampling. It feels smooth to the touch, not indented.

It sounds like the face up and body blush is all going to have to come off. :...( I wasn't going for the crackle look. I'm sending a message to the seller about it.

Does anyone know an approximate cost range to get this done? She's 19.4 cm without the ears.

She has some other things, like a white spot on top of her head and velcro on the back. I'm not sure if those are easy fixes, but at least they won't be seen under a wig.

    6. I've seen two dolls with damage like this, and unfortunately it turned out to be resin under the sealant too. Although additional layer of cracked sealant adds a bit od "thickness" to the outer layer making cracks more apparent, after removing sealant these cracks could still be seen. Unfortunately new makeup, blushing and shimmers doesn't cover the damage, but it helped a bit.

Last time I saw something like this happen was when a doll spent an entire day in a delivery truck in freezing weather. When she arrived to me in the evening and I opened the box, I've noticed cracking that wasn't there when the head was shipped (by a local doll friend for a faceup, so the owner had no reason to lie). I'm assuming it's the major difference in temperature that has caused resin to slightly shrink and expand. I had a similar thing happen to a glass vase that I bought a few years back on a freezing day, and shortly after coming back home to warmth I could hear it forming cracks :(

Needless to say, the vase never served its purpose as a flower pot. At least with doll it's just aesthetics, not functionality. But it doesn't change the fact that it's not something you want to see, especially on a pricey limited doll.

Edit: some of it might be just sealant craking, but cracks on her chest and ears look exactly like that resin cracking I've encountered before. Unfortunately there is no way to tell how much damage there is without wiping off everything :(

    7. It's possible some or all of the damage is from temperature/heat cycling from the shipping process. I once cracked a diamond by unintentionally heat cycling it. Resin is much more flexible in comparison fortunately.

If it was shipping damage your or the seller may be able to show the photos to the payment or shipping agency and be reimbursed for damages.

    8. I really hope there is not damage under the sealant as well. :( It could be temperature related, I'm not sure.

I spoke to the seller and the cracks were there before shipping unfortunately. Mr. Super Clean was used. It's still possible that one of the reasons it's cracking is due to the heat in Australia. I have not experienced this with other paint jobs that are probably much older (around 11 years) than this one.

I've been offered a partial refund or return so I'm currently debating what to do.

    9. That level of damage to the aesthetic work should have been disclosed front and center. That really is unfortunate. I've never seen it to this extent but it's something that definitely can happen to areas sprayed with sealant while working in bad conditions or also years later. High humidity and unfavorable temperature or temperature fluctuations can cause it, generally when it happens years later it's some perfect storm of bad conditions that makes the sealant start to give up this way.
If you really wanted the doll sculpt I hope you can negotiate a decent refund and just get her repainted. It looks like it was a simple enough type of Faceup and body blush so I would think you can refresh her without enormous expense. Best of luck!

    10. Thank you! :) I'm planning on keeping her (if possible) with a discount as she can be hard to find. I'm just hoping that there is not any damage to the resin. :eusa_pray I'm going to get new elastic and restring her since she's loose. I haven't done that in years though, so this will be interesting. Then I plan on finding someone to clean up this paint job and get the whole thing redone. Hopefully after that I will find or make an outfit. Dust of Dolls still has a outfit pattern for this doll in one of their blog posts, so I might use that.
