Aesthetics Second faceup, how did I do?

Jul 27, 2020

    1. (my images are broken, apologies for the links) Just did my second faceup and ear mod (not looking for critique on the ear mod I know what I need to improve there), and I was wondering what people thought of the faceup? I know it needs eyelashes but I don’t have any right now so I’ll add them later ^^. I’m interested in any constructive criticism as it’s only my second one and I’m learning a lot.

    2. I really like the shading and colour tones work really well together. I think when you add the lashes those gorgeous eyes will pop.
Great job, I really like what you've done.

    4. Wow! I think you are good with symmetry!
Love the golden tattoo! Can’t believe it’s just your second faceup!
I think the hair on the eyebrows look a bit tick (I eluld use a thinner brush), but maybe that’s just my personal taste.
I’m looking forward to see your improvement from now on!

    5. Personally, I think this is a rather nicely done second faceup. I do agree that the eyebrow hairs are kinda thick (along with the lashes). How did you do the eyebrows? Is it all just paint or is there some pastel?
I like the eye makeup and tattoo (which reminds me of Dragon Age, which is always great imo lol). I also like what you were going for with the lips, though I'm not sure about the white dots on the lower lip (but, that could be a style preference thing). He has a nice amount of blushing, not too over the top to where he looks drunk, but enough that it's noticeable and helps bring out the details of his features.
I also think he looks just fine without applied upper lashes, but adding them wouldn't hurt the look (I suggest seeing if you like how he looks with them by holding them in place, before gluing them in, just in case you end up preferring him without ^^ ) No critique on the elf ears, but they look very nice and it looks like you managed to get a really close color match, great job on them!

All in all, he looks great and I think your third faceup will turn out even better. Keep it up~ ^^

    6. Thank you very much!! I’m definitely going to try and do thinner hairs in the future especially for the eyelashes! For the eyebrows I used paint and pastel because I was going off a reference of someone with very dark and filled in eyebrows. (D9CA34A3-7E9E-425D-A261-C4212BAF14B3) but if I were going for a more natural look I probably wouldn’t fill in with pastel. I’m using a super thin brush but I think I need one a bit longer as well as just practice tbh. The white dots on the lips are supposed to be shines but I’m not sure if I like them either, next time I might do them with pencil and not paint dor a less intense look! Thank you so much for the advice!! I will keep practicing, I have two floating heads to mess with before my next doll gets here...

    7. I think it looks really good :)
Love the golden tattoos and the bits of white accent in the eyelashes and brows.

The eyebrows look nice and thick eyebrows were what you are going for. They may actually be a bit short though. I think it looks more natural for the brows to extend further to the outer corner of the eye as shown in your reference photo. Half brows are a thing of course but seems unusual for thick brows.
If you are already using a thin brush, maybe practice using lighter pressure and making really thin brush strokes. I was honestly too worried about thick lines and did my brows with watercolor pencil only, so I applaud your brush work :thumbup
For the pastel, you definitely don't want it to be too dark, more like a shadow. The level of fill would depend on how dark your brows are intended to be. Without the shadow I think the brows run the risk of looking sparse.

A nice gloss could be used on the lips instead of painting on a white dot. Blending it out might also be a solution.

Honestly I've only done one face-up so take my advice with a grain of salt haha.
I do draw and occasionally fill in my own brows with a faint shadow LOL.

    8. Thank you! My first faceup I did the brows with only watercolor pencil but I didn’t like the look of it so I switched to brushes this time, it’s definitely difficult! For the brows I did purposefully make them shorter than the reference photo because I wanted to make him look less human if that makes sense? Thank you so much for the advice! I appreciate it and hope to improve my lines in the future!!

    9. You're welcome! If you already use a thin brush, it could be that there might be too much paint still on it when you do the hairs (and the paint could possibly not be thinned enough). I always paint on my glove (or paint palette) until I get the size of lines I want, then do the hairs.

Ah, okay. All I could see was the paint, so I wasn't sure. Using paint and pastel for the eyebrows is totally fine, a lot of people do it. I always use paint and pastel when I do eyebrows, tbh. A pastel base in the color/shape I want, seal, then paint the hairs in a few different shades (usually close to the color I'm wanting the brow, though sometimes it's hard to see the color differences with darker brows) and then I brush more pastel over that once it's dry to try and soften it up some. Here's a couple examples if you're interested: [1], [2]. I also use that method on light brows: [1], [2].

Honestly, I don't think you need to paint/draw the highlights on the lips. Unless that's just the style you want to do. Which is absolutely fine, it's good to develop your own style (which you seem to be, it's refreshing to see someone who isn't just trying to emulate already popular artists' styles). Anyway, gloss should give you natural highlights with no need to paint/draw them. I recommend Tamiya X-22, if you can find it. One coat can give you a more natural shine, or you can do multiple if you want to get extra shiny. You can add in pearl powder for some extra sparkle, or even skip the gloss entirely. Just depends on the look you want. ^^

I've gotten really wordy, I'm so sorry lol. But, you are very welcome for the advice and if you ever want anymore or just some tips, feel free to hit me up. Always happy to help ^^
