Aesthetics Second faceup attempt: Resinsoul Mei (critique desired)

Dec 11, 2013

    1. Hello! This is my second ever faceup (and my first on resin - my very first faceup was on an off-topic Hujoo dollie). It's my Resinsoul Mei, Lavinia. I did her faceup this past summer. I'd love to hear your opinions on what I've done well and what I can do to improve!

Here are pictures of Lavinia's factory faceup and blank head before I did my faceup attempt. Her original faceup was very gray and light. She's WS and her head has yellowed a bit, though it's hard to tell in the blank picture - sorry for the blurriness! Because she was somewhat yellow, I decided to blush her whole face to try to mitigate the color a little.

Here's a picture of her finished faceup. I used pastels for her face, ears, and lips, watercolor pencils for her eyebrows and lashes, and thinner-diluted acrylic paint for her eyeliner. I glossed her lips and a little bit around her eyes. For sealant, I used Testors Dullcote.

Here's a picture of her finished faceup in more direct lighting.

Here are some questions I had:

      - Her original faceup had nearly no tint on the lips, and I wanted to make them stand out a bit more, but they're still very subtle. I brushed crushed-up pastels on them and did three or four layers of pastels and sealant. Do you think more layers would've make them more vibrant? Additional colors? Does anyone wet their brush and paint on the tint from the pastel dust that way?

      - I think her eyes probably need more coloring around them. What would you suggest? Pastels brushed on before I draw the lashes? Color on her top lid?

Any other comments/critique are welcome too! Thank you very much for any suggestions you have! I know her face doesn't match her neck now, but it doesn't bother me too much.

    2. To answer your direct questions:

-If the lip color you used was subtle, no amount of layers will change that. I would pick a darker, more vibrant color and build it up as needed.

-You definitely don't want to wet your pastels before using them, as it clumps them up and makes it look like a crayon drawing ^_^'

-For the eyes I like to blush in a wide area sweeping up to or almost to the eyebrow as well as the lower eyelid indent with a lighter color (still darker than the skintone though) then make each layer a smaller area with a darker pastel until only the very edge of the eye is rimmed with the darkest pastel. It's a lot like doing human makeup except you use more natural/ flesh colors instead of brighter ones (and if it's a girl or girly boy I do eyeliner with black acrylic too and highlight the browbone and inner eye corner with a shade lighter than the skin). You want to do your eyelashes after you do all your pastels and make sure each layer is sealed before you do the lashes.

As for some general critiques, I don't know if it's my monitor but it looks as though you got some pastel outside the boundries of her mouth pretty far? You want to be careful about that since it gives an "I tried to wipe off my lipstick with the back of my hand" look. If it's just my monitor, then feel free to ignore this ^_^'Also aside from what you already mentioned, the eyebrow and eyelash hairs could use work. Eyebrows and eyelashes are among the hardest things to do with a doll, but it helps to have a reference picture so you can see the direction the hairs grow on the eyebrows as well as filling the eyebrows in with pastel so they look more realistic.

All in all it's a lot better than my second attempt was and I hope some of these things can help.

    3. Her face-up is nicely done; I like how each side of her face-up look mostly even. :)
For her lips, you could possibly use a brighter shade of pastel or try lightly painting thin lines of color (from the inside/center) to help them stand out more.
I personally like her eye make-up, even if it's a bit plain. ^_^ If you want more color, it would probably be best to apply the pastels before you do the eye liner or lashes.
You could also blush her body to match her head (if you wanted to), so the skin tone difference wouldn't be as noticeable.

    4. Nefla: Thank you, that's all incredibly helpful! Especially the eye-shading part. That'll be so helpful for my next try :) She probably does have some excess blushing around her mouth - I had the same problem with my first faceup. It looks like the dolly was eating strawberries XD

*NatTheCat*: Thank you very much! I'm really glad that you liked the eyes :) Thank you for your suggestions, too! Those are great ideas. When you paint the thin lines of color on lips, do you use acrylic paint?

    5. first of all i think such pastel colour make up suits her wig very much :)

brows - try first apply some pastel as a base - just with brush u can correct it carefuly with eraser, and when u think the shape is ok start drawing lines - depend what u like watercolor pencil or brush with pastel, don't worry if it won't work few times, practice will make u a master, believe me :)

eyes - i would add a little shading in the outer corners and mark the upper line with thin line, u can also add a little pink/soft red on the low part of the eye so it will look more natural. lashes are like practice practice practice, is rly not bad as a beginner, just keep going and remember to never give up

lips - i love her lips. later just if u want u can draw lines - in this case with white watercolor pencil it gives more natural look, but i also love how it is now, like a light lipstick.

in general i would think about more blushing, don't know did u blushed her cheeks. u can try and see do u like it. i can also recomment u a pencil for human make up - i use one from oriflame, kinda round for eyelids, it does the job really nice. remember always also to have one bigger brush to clean up the head before every layer of mr.sclear.
and one more - is very easy to blush just the head for body, is much easier work than blushing body. i did such thing for my friend - head was white and body in ns, i mixed pastels in exactly same colous as body and just applied it on head, then put layer of mr.sc and then went to painting.

      hope it helps somehow.

    6. Thank you, this is all really helpful! I hadn't thought of using a bigger brush to dust off the head before sealing. I definitely think that would have helped with the blotchiness last time.
