Hi everyone, I'm quite a fan of the aesthetic of fairyland joints, but I don't love the hip joints on the minifee and I'm only interested in 1/4th sized dolls. I like the way their kneecaps and elbows look realistic even when bent. Are there any other dolls that have similar knee and elbow joints but have different hip joints? I'm aware that the fairyland fairyline dolls have different hip joints and I like those but I'm not sure about the "racheting" system on their other joints. I'm less interested in "kid" shaped bodies also. Any kind of help or info is appreciated! Thank you.
I have the 2D Doll 41cm body for my 1/4 girl. There is a slim and a curvy version. I like how the knees and elbows have a similar look to fairyland. It is a very cute body and probably my favorite aesthetically. Feels like a slim MSD but closer to 1/4 in height. I am also very interested in this Dance Soul body for a minifee hybrid, but I don’t own it so I cant say if it’s good or not. I will probably purchase one though because it seems so perfect for minifee proportions.
I think you'd really like this body, but the knees are the hidden peanut type... BJD Mian Mian Body 42.6cm Girl Ball Jointed Doll - Legenddoll Or this one too! It has the similar knees! Doll Parts, Impldoll - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls - Alice's Collections I'd have to search more for other bodies but those are my first two thoughts. Doll Parts, Coralreef - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls - Alice's Collections Doll Parts, Coralreef - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls - Alice's Collections these also have similar jointing to the impldoll body
Potentially not very helpful because I think Souldoll discontinued it, so you'll have to dig second hand, but the Soulkid N.L. body's jointing has very subtle hidden peanut joints that look very natural imo. Here are some pics through WaybackMachine. Maybe you'd also like the BonbonGalaxy Lychee body? The joints are a bit different but when I briefly had it, I found the elbow range similar to minifee. DF-H slim body 2.0 also has very nicely sculpted joints that are quite beautiful to look at. Fairyland is very peculiar with their joint engineering (for better and for worse ) so there are not so many super similar bodies, but hopefully this helps! Oh and also maybe also Withdoll might be interesting actually!
@oyone: those are so cute, and I love the variety of bodies! @Haven_Of_Dolls336 ooo, these are great options! "hidden peanut type joints" made me laugh. @cobaltconduct ooo I love these! the bonbon galaxy body is probably the winner for me. I love learning bits of lingo... is "peanut joints" an established term? Thank you all for your knowledge and willingness to share it!! I am still a bit overwhelmed by all the various sites and doll sources, so your experience is very appreciated! ^u^
Yeah because the elbows and knees typically are shaped like peanuts. The hidden part refers to what the the kneecaps look like specifically when bent. See, when hidden peanut joints are bent, they slide out of the thigh a little without much detail on them, so some people don't like them. I'm indifferent to them honestly.
At first I thought they looked weird but after seeing other dolls with an extra knee cap sculpt on the "peanut" (which I think looks extra weird when extended) I've decided to make my peace with them. Idk if joints are a weird thing to get hung up about but it seems to be my #2 concern after the overall sculpt + aesthetic of the doll.
@P0laris Nothing weird about being picky about joints, that are a big part of how one experience a BJD after all. Personally I worry more about how well balanced and functional they are, but looks matter too, of course. I think most joint types have their pros and cons. If there was such a thing as the perfect joint, all makers would be using it and not bother with the others. But every joint is a trade off between range, stability and aesthetic. And on top of that there is the matter of execution, not all joints even of the same type are created equal. Anyway, I wish you good luck in your hunt for the right body!
@Lillith It's so difficult to judge function and stability without seeing a doll in person... I never even considered that until I went to a doll meet up and got to see how different they all are. A vinyl doll fell off a table and nobody blinked and that's how I found out how durable they are compared to resin ^_^;;
I don't know if this information is of any use but I have an old ResinSoul dragon boy (Pixiu IIRC?) who has an odd style of elbow joints (Instead of having a peanut shape he has like. a cup? I can find pictures later if you like!) and before buying I thought it'd have a nicer shape on the elbows but I ended up really not being a fan of it. Even after sueding, the joints don't hold tension right, and I don't find that to be worth the minor improvement to shape, ahahaha!
I really love Atelier Momoni's doll joints...they're pretty famous for their posing! She is very versatile. They hold poses very well and are stable enough to stand by themselves.
