::SD SIZE BJD by D.H Studio:: (test stringing pg.9)

Jun 21, 2008

    1. Hi all!! thanks for your support.
      i can't post picture of my doll progress lately.
      i haven't post the finished head like i promised last week too.
      my doll sculpt is near to the finish line.
      now i'm working on the most boring part, sanding, refinement, and a lot of finishing stuff.

      I need an important opinion from all of you, please help me.
      lately i found a great material to replace resin (which is a fragile material)
      it works like resin, can be casted into silicone mold. and have all the resin feature, translucency, can be pigmented, and etc.
      but the most intresting part of this material is UNBREAKABLE similar like vinyl.
      it's somewhere in between rubber and resin. quite hard but a liiiitlee bit bendy and have softness.
      (sorry my english so bad, i can't describe it well)

      what do you thing if i casted my BJD in this kind of material?
      it's a little bit pricey, but it's worthed coz it won't break.

    2. Is it toxic to sand? I guess the weight of the completed doll will be around the same as well? It's certainly interesting, but I guess an important question is just how much more will it cost as compared to the same doll casted in resin.

    3. Sounds very interesting, I'd like to know what the material is. If the finished product is unbreakable, it could be worth the higher price. Also, will it keep it's original color or will it turn yellow like resin does?

    4. I would be very interested in the newer material, though I imagine most people would just want resin. Might you be able to give the option of both?

    5. I would suggest buying a small amount of the material and trying it out on one doll? To see what you think of it. :) Perhaps you could share detailed pictures with us to look at pros/cons of the material you used..

      I can't wait to see the finished doll! (Oh, and I loved the semi-closed eyes of that one head sculpt! I hope you re-try that style again!)

    6. It sounds really interesting, but I would agree with *Sword of Light that you should test it out first. You may find out that you don't like it, or it has more problems to work with then resin does. The fact that it costs more, well that is a down side right there. How much more does it cost than the resin you would be using? Hopefully it isn't a lot more.

      I would like to see a semi-transparent skin myself though. I think that it looks more realistic. I saw an Australian private cast doll that was slightly transparent and thought that it looked like real skin. It was really nice.

      Go for casting one doll and see how things go. You might find out that you hate it or maybe love it.

    7. Donny:
      My main concern with this new material is how BJD buyers would respond to it. You have to consider how biblically important a RESIN doll is to BJD owners. From what I've seen over the last couple of years, non-resin dolls are considered off-topic, or have to go through some kind of approval before they can be discussed on the forums. That being said, for your doll to not be cast in resin makes it a target to be deemed off-topic. Which would be bad for business as well as word-of-mouth. I would consider long and hard the benefits vs drawbacks of using this new material.

      Personally, however, I feel that a non-breakable doll is a pretty cool idea. I dont often drop my dolls, but it would be nice to have that piece of mind.

    8. The new material kinda sound like what the DDII is made of, I'd buy it(if I had any money) I really love the body, it's so cute!

    9. almost finished!!! oh i'm so exited!!
      it's 80% finished.
      but the molding and casting part will be painful job to do.....
      enjoy the pic

    10. Wow. Just, wow.

    11. I love the little pagoda shape of her breastplate. That's so cool!

    12. @obskitten
      it has the same toxic characteristic just like resin.
      i think it is resin, maybe some other variant of polyurethane resin.
      it's has characteristic of rubber and resin.
      even though i will use the new expensive material, it won't be too expensive.
      i'm stick to my first goal, it's to make a great BJD with a reasonable and affordable price :)

      @bruny
      i think it will yellowing just like resin does, coz it has most of resin characteristic.
      but as long as you don't expose it to sunlight everyday it won't happen.

      @desarri
      of course i will give buyer free choice of material

      @sword of light
      i'll have to buy 6kg every purchase, and it will expired in 3months.
      but i'll take the risk,. i will do some casting for sample and experiment with the new material. i'll post it here as soon as i finished the casted product.

      @phoenix
      it cost twice more expensive than regular resin,
      but i won't give twice more expensive for my product price (i don't know how to say it in english.. i hope you know what i mean)
      yes my resin is also semi transparent similar to french resin. (i do a lot of experiment to get this translucency)
      it's available in translucent beige, trans' pink skin, trans' white skin.
      and opaque skin color also available. i'll post it here for all of you when i finished the doll

      @soshi
      thanks, all of your oppinion gaves me the idea of BJD target market.
      i'll gave free choice to buyer to choose their own material.
      but the new material is actualy a resin, but i don't know yet what type is it..

      @mortat hero
      what is DDII? could you post a link to me, so i can observe the material?
      i'm just curious

    15. It reminds me allot of the mnf body.

      It looks great..tho i think the neck is a bit to thin ^__^"
      Because her face is a bit more realistic.

    16. Wow, you've done a great job (ofcourse if you keep making such beautiful things people will begin to expect you to rule the bjd world). Her chest is really interesting, I've never seen one that looks like hers.

    17. oh wow! She's almost done yays! Also glad to hear that you're going to give an option of the material. Tell us all how your casting goes when you get there! ^__^

    18. Sell little samples (of a cast of a coin or something) to all those who want to see what it is?

    19. Yes she is going to be gorgeous. Very, Very professional looking work!

    20. Oh Donny! everytime i come to this thread im amazed at how gorgeous she is! I cant wait till you start selling her im all ready saving. also will you be selling a 'Large bust' For this girl? 21. What a beautiful body you have created! I love her gentle face too! :D

      What price range are you thinking of asking for her?

    22. She's such a beautiful BJD Donny! I wish my hands could work magic like that ;_;

    23. WOW im getting more excited Donny.

    24. SHe's gorgeous. I do however find her neck to be too thin, but that's all, she's got a lovely face !

    25. she is beautiful 0_0

    26. thanks a lot guys! all of you gave me the spirit to make the best i could.
      i've purchased and used 3,5 kg of clay to build this BJD,
      but now she's only weigh about 1,5 kg :)
      the other 2kg ends up in trash can, i carve and add again so many times just to get the best sculpt. thank God it turns out OK :D

      @tinka treasure
      i've fix the neck this morning after reading your suggestion :)
      i surf arround the web to see BJDs body for reference.
      i found out that some BJD body have caught my eyes,
      they have inspire me a lot.
      mnf body is one of my favorite BJD body, supia's doll realistic body detail, dollmore youth, DOT, etc.

      @obesekitten
      good idea, thanks.
      i'll consider that.

      @firefaux
      you already saving?? :D
      wow thanks!
      in the future i'll make several option for the bust part.
      i think it might be 3 option (normal,small, and big)
      but for now i only make the normal one.

      @Miss_Pygmalion
      thanks!
      the price range is about 200-350
      but i'm not sure yet.
      i need to see how much money i'll spend for packaging, manual book, etc.
      the packaging will be light weight wooden box with my logo carved on it.

    27. I like to see an example of the new material you are thinking of using. It sounds very interesting.

      You sculpt is beautiful

    28. That is a beautiful doll Donny! I can't wait to see the cast doll with the face up. Is your girlfriend going to make another outfit for your new girl? She makes some really nice clothes. This is so exciting!

    29. @warpug
      thanks,i'll post some pic of the new material if i decide to use it ok?

      @phoenix
      thanks.
      yes my girlfriend will gladly make my new doll outfit design.
      she will manage all the outfit and acesories production in the future,
      and i just manage the BJD production and some concept design for the outfit. :)
      wish us luck!

    30. wow, i just read all of this thread, and your previous thread, when you made Liv, and you are AMAZING!! i can't wait to see your new doll when she's all cast and has a face!! good luck to both you and your girlfriend!

    31. of course im saving all ready! Her bodys amazing and those legs are to die for i wish i had them myself XD and after seeing out other girl all made up i cant wait for this one to come out knowing she's going to be beautiful. I'll be waiting. I cant wait to see the outfit your girlfriend makes. are you two thinking of selling them with the dolls?

    32. Squee! She looks great so far!

    33. I'm planning on creating my own doll after my exams too, can I ask, can airdry clay be cut into half and hollowed out then stuck back together? Kind of like ovenbaked clay where you cut it in half and use slick to stick them back ^^; Is it possible to let the clay dry and add on more clay on top of it? Kind of worried since I normally use oven baked clay for my big projects.
      also what's the mechanism behind opening the head to put in the eyes? That's a part I'm kind of stuck at... because I have no idea how to do the magnetic faceplate system and I would love my doll to be as customizable as possible =3 Your work really inspires me to try making dolls =3

    34. well i'll try to answer your question correctly.. (my english sucks..)

      first answer about the airdryclay,
      in my personal oppinion airdryclay is the best material to make BJDs (as long as it's water soluble, this is important for adding clay and stuck back any broken part)
      and water soluble clay also good for making joints;
      u can wet the joint and wet the joint socket, then press them together and twist it arround so it can have move smoothly. (i hope u get what i mean)
      a lot more advantage you can get with airdryclay, i can't describe them well..
      but sculpting using airdryclay is a little bit tricky, not as simple as working with oven baked clay. it'll involve a lot of carving skill than sculpting.

      i hope this will help u.

      about the magnetic head sistem, i'll post a pic as soon as possible.
      i can't desribe it with words

    35. She looks lovely so far. You are truly wonderful at sculpting.

      Also would you ever Sell LiV as a doll? I would indeed love to have a doll of her too.

    36. Donny~ she's gorgeous! :D I love the body! she flows together so well!

      As for the new material, maybe cast one in each as an experiment and take her to a meet and let people play with her? Or if you can go to a con you can let other people see how they like the new material?

    37. Thanks for answering my question =D Ladoll clay should be okay right? I happened to see it in the tutorial and a shop here is selling some which made it all the more convenient for me

    38. ladoll is a good clay. it's pretty durable not fragile like my material.
      (keramiplast have plaster like characteristic, it's a little bit fragile if the part is too thin)
      it's also water soluble and easy to carve, should be perfect for doll making.
      but you'll have to deal with the clay fiber for getting smooth surface.
      but it won't be a problem, just use mr surfacer 500 (or any kind of liquid putty or primer) will fixed it.

    39. i have to say that you work is amazing!

      i hope that you will try this new material. i am very curious & i think there is only progess in trying new things. perhaps you will be the first to start a new trend? it is important to expirment if you can & do new work. i can't wait to see it!

      & yr sculpt is LOVELY!!! i really really really love it. :aheartbea

    40. I really really like how your flesh skin tone looks like ._.

      The fingers are posing very nicely, but I'm afraid they're a little too spread to make dressing her up easily? her hand may not fit into the average SD girl sized sleeves.

      If you can figure out how to make it so you can take her hand out and put it back using magnets like for MiniFees, and Volks Yo-SDs that will be great, I think :3

    41. wow! This is so cool looking! You make me want to try sculpting molds myself (although I won't be as good as you :sweat [I have rotten luck])

    42. It is truly amazing to read through this and the thread you made for LiV. I find it very fascinating to actually being able to read about the progression you make, not to mention watch it. Though I don't think I will do this myself (though you make it sound very tempting), it's a great inspiration. Who knows, perhaps I'll be buying one of your dolls one days... ^__^ It's certainly tempting.
      I'm looking forward to seeing her completely finished, she seems awfully cute. I especially like the waist-part, it's so beautiful and realistic.

    43. I poke for updates! Could we maybe see a few more pics of the full body? Maybe showing her posing? I'm falling in love with her body. It would be perfect for one of my girls!

    44. hi all thanks a lot for keeps supporting me.
      lately i've been so busy with some other project.
      (i've got a important chance of a live time to catch)

      so i postpone my doll project, but she's finished and primed.
      she's ready for molding and casting.

      i'll post some other pic of her when i've got some spare time.
      i will do my best to be able to release her in late november for sale,
      i'm sorry about the delay

    45. how did u sculpt the joints?? im having probs

    46. i have mold some beads and spherical styrofoam in different size with plaster.
      that help so much to get a perfect spherical joints.

    47. SQUEE!! I Cant Wait to see her! Congrats on finishing her and Im excited for her release even if it's next year im still excited

    48. Ohhh, that body is gorgeous! I love the proportions; outside of Volks and Dollstown you don't see many younger-looking SD-size. I can't wait to see how her face turns out!

      Edit: Never mind; I just saw the pictures. She's so expressive...! And I love her nose, too. ^^;

    49. She´s extremely gorgeous! I fell in love at first sight. What would the price be for such a beauty?

    50. kyukyukyu! ohh ihope you update sooooooooooon!!!

    51. I can't wait to see more updated pictures! :)

    52. Wow!!! Your work is amazing!!! xDDD!

    53. I am just in awe of your work, Donny. She is absolutely gorgeous already. I can't wait for you to finish her, and I think I'm going to have to start saving!

    54. ooohhh! She's a cutie!!

    55. This doll looks so good and welly planned. Can't wait to see it fully done :)

    56. Many of the best sculpts hold position really well. However, you can always MODIFY the body parts AFTER you have the sculpt finished. So, I would say: get done. you're doing great. and critique the thing LATER.

    57. test stringing (i strung it very2 loose, so the primer won't damaged)
      ready for molding and casting

      I hope that your girlfriend makes some nice clothes again. The other outfit that she made was amazing. ^_^

    59. Wonderful! I look forward to seeing more of your work!!!

    60. Gorgeous!!!
