50–65cm Dolls SD naga project *slight update~!*

Dec 22, 2008

    1. I've never sculpted before but after lurking this part of DoA for so long i decided it was worth a shot-- and whadda ya know, i love sculpting! :) The guy I'm sculpting hasn't got a name as of yet, but i have decided that he's going to be a naga with a fully jointed tail. Crit is very very welcome (and yeah, I'm aware he's pretty wonky at the moment xD so feel free to pinpoint exactly how so i can get him symmetrical.) sorry in advance for the dark pics
edit:: by the way, any name suggestions?

I'm fairly happy with the right side of his head but i still have to do the ears and work a lot on his left cheek and eye.

Once again I'm happy with the right side of this but i'm struggleing to get the left side to match it, it needs a ton more work.
      wish me luck!:fangirl:

edit:: just a quick couple of pics, sans headcap. I got his headcap off and just about finished up his left eye; started building up his forehead but i ran out of clay so it isn't nearly finished.

    3. thank you very much! :3

    4. it looks great from the front :D! but you need to build up the forehead

    5. ah i was thinking about that :sweat thank you, i'll be sure to do that by the next update :3

    6. Good start! If you ever need help with tips on your doll, I'm sure many of the other sculptors would be glad to help! :)

    7. Good luck ^_^. I think you are doing great so far. I think his face is a bit too big for his head though, or he needs more of a forehead. Also, I think the eyes are a little too far apart, and it juts out too much above them. I am sure the lighting isn't helping, but it looks kind of like he has a huge, think eyelid. I think it just needs to be blended a bit more into the face. I'm not saying it is bad, I just think parts need a bit of tweaking and it will be great.

I already responded in my thread about symmetry, but I will post more here since you asked in here too.
For one, I started with a very precise core. Mine was very big, so I wouldn't suggest doing that if you aren't casting, but I am just going to hollow most of it out and put some more clay in the inside where it is needed. In some spots it was too thin, so I had it poke at it and squish the foam, then push more clay in there. It really made my first step with the clay easy though.
Another thing I do is use a good compass (one that won't get messed up if you squeeze it) and put it in her belly button and draw circles around her to give me lines to help judge things (this really helps with breasts). Just make sure the belly button is a centered as possible first! Edit: Opps I forgot you made yours separate. Sticking the compass into the bottom of the chest will probably make the circles too small to help much. You could try just putting a block or something under it and make sure it stays really still and draw the lines that way.
Also, it helps to take a picture as straight as possible (and straighten it in photo shop or something if needed), and draw guide lines. Flipping the image also helps a lot, because when you get used to seeing things it messes with your perception a bit, so flipping it will make your errors a lot more apparent.

      I hope that helps!! ^_^

    8. Thank you very very much for all your help! i think I'm going to add to his forehead a bit and i'll work on the other things you mentioned as well. I really do love how your girl is coming, by the way
edit: thought i do have to say, the eyelid problem is mostly from bad lighting...i'll replace the ones up top with better pics soon!

    9. he's looking great so far, getting things symmetrical is always annoying i find not looking at the sculpt front on helps, like tipping it up to see from under the bottom or something helps as you see where the curves are such.. also positioning a light so it is from above the piece rather than the side or what not i find helps as it makes the shadows simular on each side. that helps me anyway.
good luck with him and cant wait to see more!

    10. thanks so much!

    11. Lookin' good :3

    12. Symmetry is hard. x.x But he's looking pretty good so far! ^-^

Good luck! I plan to make my own ball jointed Naga some day too. <3 I'll definately be watching!

    13. thanks for the luck! Hey there's no better time then the present, you should give it a shot and we can watch each others progress! ;)

    14. he's really good so far. is the half closed eye intentional or are you just not done yet? i like the half closed eye though. i cant wait to see more pics!

    15. I just haven't finished filing away that eye, but maybe if i ever get really good at this i can make a damaged/half closed eye head hahaha

    16. Heehee, that would be fun~ :) I'll take a look for some supplies when I get back to my apartment. I've been thinking of just messing around with it and getting a feel for it anyway. ;)

    17. he's turning out looking pretty hott! haha

    18. thanks!
      updating soon :)

    19. hehehe I love the expression on the last picture there, what a cute little mouth ^_^ I look forward to seeing how he comes out
