SD doll Alphonse- Work in progress

Mar 19, 2017

    1. I have sculpted before and made one doll before (Though it never really got finished >_<) So I consider this to be the first doll I am making. It has a more masculine body so far, but will probably be genderless. I would love to hear what people think so far! I haven't settled on a name for it yet, but I am thinking of Alphonse.

    7. i may be biased, as that is part of my drawing style, but i loooove elongated anything. i like the looks of the torso you have there. :D (and that neck! ee! yayy)

    8. You've gotten a lot done in a short time, so far. He looks very interesting.

Working on the torso pieces and how they fit together and how they might be able to be cast when/if i get to that point >_<. Any advice?

    11. Well, what kind of advice do you need? Moldmaking? Parting line placement? Casting materials?

    12. For the pieces, I'm not exactly sure how to approach finishing the inside of them so they will be easily cast, if that makes sense. Like, if anyone has any tricks/ideas of shaping the hollows so the mold can be pulled out.

    13. Well, what kind of molding process are you going to use? Two part or glove mold? What does the pieces look like? Is minimizing weight and material used an issue or will you focus on thick and sturdy parts? A piece prepared for one method and one set of materials may not necessarily work with another method.

Generally, in my experience, the more that can be done at the core stage, before sculpting even starts, the better.
If the core you did the sculpture on can be pulled out, so will the silicone mold. If that is not possible and you need to hollow things out after the fact it gets a little trickier. What materials do you have on the inside of the doll?
After removing the core and shaping the inside (using a hand drill, dremel, files or whatever tools that seems most appropriate) you essentially have two choices. You can either use a sheet of clay to cover the inside to smooth it out, or you can keep shaping using tools and grind/drill/sand until the surface is somewhat smooth. Then it's just a matter of priming, sanding and finishing just like the outside of any part.
For legs and arms you can use some kind of rod fitted into the piece and then refitted into the mold to create the hole. Just make sure the material you use is compatible with both the silicone and the polyurethane. Do tests!
Using placeholder rods can also work for body parts if you are ok with the weight and cost of casting solid pieces.

Not sure if that helps? There are so many variables and no one but you can make the decisions.

a few updates! tried some eyes on him and really like how it looks. though he looks super judgey.

    15. ok so i did some mock ups in photoshop for the hips. I'm leaner towards the longer ones, but i wanted some second opinions too! what do you think?

    16. I lean towards the left, shorter version. It seems to be more proportionate to the upper torso. But I don’t know what you intend the legs to look at or what overall look and size you are aiming for, so I may be way off.
Based on the elongated neck and overall shape I’m guessing you are going for a kind of Doll Chateau-esque look?

    17. Thanks! I think I will go for one somewhere between the two. The joints will probably be different too.
