Materials Sculpey over Premier

Jan 28, 2016

    1. Hello,
I just had a random thought as I am working on my studio on my doll. I'm currenly using Premier but I have also tried using Super Sculpey as well. I like different aspects of both. I was wondering, has anyone ever tried to use super sculpey on top of premier (or any other type of air-dry clay).
My idea was using the air-dry clay to get my basic hollow form and then once that's dry, apply super sculpey to it to get more details. I love premier for the carving and re-adding property it has. I'm a subtract and add on type of sculptor most of the time. But I like the way sculpey works for doing things like faces and hands (to a point). I just wondered if anyone else had this idea. Look forward to hearing back!

    2. As long as the air dry clay is completely dry and does not contain any components that reacts with the heat used to cure the super sculpey it works fine for short term use.
However, over time the air dry clay can “move” a little as temperatures and humidity changes and that can cause the polymer clay to crack.
It is the same problem that old wax over papier mache dolls have.

    3. can be done! But premier will absorb oils from the sculpey and eventually harden the sculpey a bit, making it less squishy.

    4. I would imagine that using an air-dry clay as your temporary core could work. I do wonder how much of the oils from the sculpey would leech into the premier. I'd also be interested to see if those oils also make the premier fall apart over time, even if you take the sculpey off.

      Hmmmmmm....
