40–49cm Dolls Saturn, a mischievous imp!

Jul 30, 2021

    1. This is my first ever attempt at making a BJD, so go easy on me here

I don't quite have a name for them yet, but boy do they already have some ENERGY about them already! I wanted to create an androgynous doll, something that you can customize yourself to be feminine, masculine, neither, or whatever your heart desires. I want to MAXIMIZE creativity with them and sculpt them with customization in mind.

So I go in, guns blazing (and with no knowledge on how joints work) to get a design sketch together and I end up with something along these lines, followed by a mock up of what they would look like all razzle dazzled up just to get a good understanding of what I'm going for

      [IMG] [IMG]

SO THEN ONTO SCULPTING, I don't have much more than the bare minimum blender knowledge (picked it up a month or two ago) so I have been learning about the program as I go as well as changing the design as I feel fits. I've hit a bit of a wall right about here because now I am forced to figure out how joints work and how to make the horns detachable via magnets BUT just seeing them take shape is already rewarding

    2. I love them! They remind me of the old Cerberus Project dolls <3

    3. Great project! I look for ward to see it develop

    4. This is so cool! I love the big ol' ears. If you're making a little imp, do you think you'll ever go for the fun swishy spade tail?

      • x 1
    5. I WAS ACTUALLY THINKING ABOUT ADDING A TAIL my only worry is that it would be difficult to cast and would ultimately be very fragile, so for now they will be tailless but attempting to mod them a tail (maybe attached to their clothes?) would be a great idea too

    6. I know fairyland's littlefee hwayu's tail is attached to her clothes with a little pin, so something like that might work! You could also try magnets - like, putting a magnet on the lower back/tailbone area (wherever you want the tail to sit) and then making the tail entirely separate. Maybe cloth-covered wire would work for posing purposes? Then you'd just have to attach the corresponding magnet to the tail's base and put the spade on top??

I am putting way too much thought into this lol

    7. I am frantically making notes of all of these options, a tail would be a super cute attachment even though I will probably avoid making them come with one for the time being, just separately for customization it would be so fun to add on! Thank you for the ideas

    8. Update: I digitally mocked up a face up and I have to say I kind of LOVE them so much?? Is that narcissistic?

    9. Okay again I am a bit new to how threads work so I hope this isnt the dumbest way of updating things, if it is I am sorry about that!

I updated their face! Gave them new ears, made them EVEN SMUG-ER, and changed up their eyes feat some eye bags now. Enjoy!

    10. Yes yes YES YES!!! Look at those new ears, so cute! :D And the new eyes and smug grin (teeth!! look great!!! I'm a sucker for fangs) look really good as well.
I noticed that the lips on the model are thinner than the ones on the original drawing. Was that on purpose? Or is it just a style difference lol

Also, when updating your thread, you definitely don't have to keep quoting/replying to your original post. There's a "watch thread" option, so any time you post anything at all I'm getting a notification for it ;)

    11. with the new knowledge I don't have to keep quoting myself, I just wanted to update another face change, I gave them a big open mouthed grin as an insert-able piece with a sharp tongue. I feel like this has far more energy to it and they're just SUPER CUTE this way so I hope you guys like them like this!

They have differed a lot from the initial sketch, but I feel like that's for the better. Initially I wanted them to be incredibly stylized and partially reflect my own drawing style but I soon leaned into semi realism instead just as a stylistic choice.

    12. Alas, I can't stop imagining this on them. They're DEFINITELY getting a cute spade tail, it's too good to pass up! I think I'll have it attachable via magnet so that you can easily remove it to dress them up, hopefully I'll find a good happy medium of thickness and design so that it will still have structural integrity and also not make it hard for them to stand up. It'll be a challenge but hopefully a worthwhile one!

    13. oooh very very cute, maybe you can make the update closed mouth version an optional faceplace or head? like how some companies offer sleping heads? they're both very cute!

      • x 1
    14. I'd love to do that honestly and am totally planning on it if all goes well, but currently I am gonna focus on getting the one finished and then later on I might make that an optional faceplate for em. Aah freshman year of university, a pit of broke hell ;-; got to save up to make it a reality!

    15. oof ouch yeah, take you're time of course! You're doing great at this, i personally could never wrap my head around these 3d programs vdfbgnhf

    16. forgot to update this: I am adding a lot of articulation to them! They have a joint at their midriff now, and their hips are double jointed as well so they can curl their knees up. Once I get the main sculpt complete (inner jointing aside) I'll send an updated photo of them! They're coming out super cute and I'm really happy about them, so happy in fact that I have another plan...

    18. Hey hey hey! I'm coming here with some update pics! I'm just working on their feet and ankle joints before moving on to hollowing them out and making them fully functional then it's on to printing! Here's a little update on them, there's still some details I have yet to add (spine definition, etc) but I'm just too excited to share them!

Now that I'm at this stage I want to ask for your help, there are some things I still can't decide on and I was hoping that anyone passing by could lend me their opinion! (I'm not sure if linking to a google form is against the rules, I'm still pretty new to all this and I didn't see anything against it in the rules but if it is I will take it down!)

      Saturn Details

Thank you so much for all your support and encouragement so far!

PS. Excuse the stiff awkward pose these pics are in, it's just for modelling purposes!

    20. well well what do we have here, if it isn't a finished little imp! Well, at least the DIGITAL sculpting phase is finished, but now they're off to be printed! I'm so happy to have gotten them to this point, it's been quite a few months of learning blender and refining them but I'm so happy to have them to where they are now! I'll be sure to update you all on when they're in a physical form, then we will hopefully make sure all their joints are working as intended.

    21. Omg!! This sculpt is amazing, I really love the expression! Good luck on getting all the parts working well when it arrives, I'll look forward to seeing the physical product!

    22. He's got a lot of solid imp characteristics. Winner sticker for you!

    23. THEY'RE FINALLY A PHYSICAL ENTITY!
I just received some images from syntheticephemera who I commissioned to print them and oh my gosh I can't put into words how excited I am about them! Seeing them digitally is one thing but having a tangible version? So exciting! I can't wait for them to arrive, and once they do I'll be sure to send update photos too!

Of course there are a few issues with them that are totally on me, the worst part about digital sculpting is that you can't actually physically test out things such as articulation and it can be hard to tell if some surfaces are too thin or too thick. When they arrive I definitely have some additional sculpting to do to ensure they work as intended and are completely sound but man! I just can't get over how cute they are, especially the little heart tail!

    25. this is awesome! And I rarely use that word. You go, guy! (and I love your sig.

    26. They're here they're here! they've arrived in person and I literally can't be happier! I have some additional sculpting to do on them (some areas are very thin and chipped, my fault not the printer's fault) But gosh they're everything I wanted them to be and more! Legs for days! Wonderful articulation! POINTY EARS!
I have a test stringing to share for now (don't mind the detached hands, I don't have s hooks yet to string them properly) just to demonstrate the articulation and their overall self to you all. The mouth piece also isn't inserted since I have to do some additional sculpting there too!

    27. Awww their face is so happy!! <3 Cant wait to see the mouth inserts! Amazing sculpt I'd love to see them stand when your able to c: What height did they end up having?

      • x 1
    28. They are around 41cm tall, 24cm of which is LEG! They've got long legs, but I'm almost certain that they'll stand just fine once I attach their feet and ankles correctly and string them up tightly.
I'll be sure to update with them standing once I finish fixing up their sculpt!

    29. Aw, he's super cute, and just as importantly, he looks extremely posable! Really looking forward to seeing him when he's complete. <3

    30. All strung up properly now! Hooks acquired! They still need some adjusting (ie the ankle joints don't fit the foot properly and general sanding) but god they're so perfect! Love em to bits
