Moldmaking Sand molds for one-time casting?

Jun 9, 2011

    1. We attended an industrial fair and saw a aluminium-processing company working with molds made of sand for casting aluminium?

Could this work for resin casting? It did not harm the original. Obviously, it can be used only once. Then it has to be renewed. However, this was very quick and easy (of course, the demonstrator was highly skilled).

These were flat pieces, but he said it works also with hollow pieces. The aluminium is also very hot when during the pouring process. And the demonstrator made air channels.

Has anybody any experience with this?

    2. We did this in my Metals class in highschool. It was like sand with oil or something in it.. It felt pretty gross and kind of smelled bad. It took me a couple tries to get the first part of the mold right..then the second part was easy. But after you get the two parts together, and take the piece you made a mold of out, you have to be really careful or else the mold will cave in..
I'd just stick with plaster or a cheaper silicone. Because the sand has oil or whatever in it and it could harm the resin, or make it so it doesn't cure right.

    3. Thank you very much for this information. Yeah, oil is deadly for resin. So no good idea.
