Wigs Safe hair products for styling wigs?

Mar 25, 2022

    1. I'm trying to research what kind of human hair products could work best for styling my doll wigs, as an alternative. I wanna find something similar to doll products like Volks' water wax or spray, in case they are out of stock and am unable to buy them (as of March 25 they currently ARE out of stock and can't be shipped to me right now)

So far I've learned that so long as it's not oil-based, it might be okay to use? I'm not too sure.

I currently have a styling putty by the brand TreSemme that I'm thinking of trying, but I don't know if it's safe to use yet.
EDIT: I looked up the ingredients and one of them was mineral oil. I'm guessing it's no good on doll hair but please lemme know if I'm correct on that or not!

What products do you guys recommend? Do you have any favorite go-to brands? What type seems to work best for you?

    2. At the moment, synthetic wigs that have heat resistance! I have one wig that's super soft with a nice sheen, buuut I have no idea if it's synthetic or not so I won't be touching it. I'm more likely to style a wig like the one in my dolly's profile picture.

    3. I can't help you there, I'm afraid. I style that sort of wig without using any product on them (other than hot water if I heat-set curls or waves into them). Mostly I just braid and/or use hairpins/clips/slides etc. on them.

Hopefully others will give you some pointers for synthetic wig products you can use.

    4. I think your styling putty would probably work fine on a doll wig if it's not oil-based, but if you want to feel more certain, I'd try and see if any cosplayers have used that product before. I had a similar question to you a while ago, and I looked up what cosplayers use, as many cosplay wigs are made out of similar (or the same?) heat-resistant synthetic fibers, and it's much easier to find information and guides on cosplay stuff, compared to niche doll stuff.

I ended up buying got2b glued freeze spray since it seems to be pretty popular with cosplayers, and I'm pretty satisfied with it, although it would probably be more convenient to buy the gel version for dolls... but I appreciate that it's a relatively cheap and easy to find product that I can get at most drugstores, plus they have mini travel sized bottles too.

    5. If you have access to Taobao (perhaps a proxy site you can order from), they sell bjd wig styling gel for as cheap as $1-2 per 100g container.

      Keywords in chinese: BJD透明发蜡发膏胶

There are other interesting tools being sold there as well, like mini iron curlers and straighteners!

    6. I recently got some wig conditioner from Amazon. Synthetic wig products are pretty easy to get nowadays, and they are the best for synthetic wig care.

    7. Oooh, a wig-specific conditioner is a good idea! I've been seeing them pop up more as a styling product on sites like BJD Bhiner. Heck, I think one of the doll brands i follow also use a similar (if not the same) product so it must be doing something right, haha. Definitely worth looking into and adding to my styling product wishlist!

    8. I found a YouTube tutorial where someone uses very diluted water-based glue as a sort of styling gel for synthetic hair... probably one of the cheaper/more accessible options out there, though I'm a bit reluctant to try it myself... :sweat

    9. I have used watered down glue to style tiny headed 1:6 action figure wigs, I've made as well as a few much larger BJD wigs I've also made myself.

PVA glue is safe to use around resin, and won't damage synthetic fiber. You can easily wash it off with water, or brush it out of the wig, if you don't mind some potential damage by doing the latter. The hair styling with diluted glue will remain there for eternity, but it is a stiff hold, because it is glue. It can look dull compared to the parts of the wig where there is no glue, there will be a more obvious contrast on shinier fibers.

I would suggest trying it if you're going for a hard to achieve, out of this world hair style. Like inspired from an anime or Japanese video game, or just something that will take an eternity to recreate every time. It's definitely a safe alternative, for any doll type of plastic, and any synthetic fibers. You just need to wash it out if you don't like how it looks, or brush it out if you don't mind some potential damage to the fiber but rather not get the wig wet (or can't, for glued together wigs). Hope that helps, good luck! (:

    10. I'm reviving this thread in hopes someone can answer my realted question. For mohair based wigs, what styling products can I use that won't damage doll resin?
