Ruse -- 27cm mature tiny

Nov 14, 2010

    1. Hi all,

I started work on a new doll a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I'd share the progress here. I'll be using some modified parts of my first doll, but there's a lot that I wanted to improve on.

Some ideas of how I imagine her...

      Anywho... onto the pictures!

    3. yay you started another one!
      i'll be keeping close watch.
Do you have a list of what you want to change / modify ?

    4. Pirooz II

I love the photo-montage of the dolls.
While it is still too early to make any critical comments,
I just want to say that I like all the colors on the developing doll.
      What Maggs said. :D

    5. Wow, you move so fast! I love the elegant curves of the insides of her legs.

    6. Can I see what you're doing with the hip joint (eg, more pics, pls? ) It looks like a fantastic idea.
I agree with Armeleia, her thighs are looking nice and round.

    7. Whoa! you started a Pirooz II :<3!
I like how your dolls look slender and with that cute tummy ^^. She's looking so nice, anee, love her face in the concept draw. I'll watch her progress as with Pirooz, makes me want to go to sculpt too.

    8. I love your drawings!
      Her body looks radical already!

    9. love her tummy!

    10. Hey again! It's really encouraging to read your comments - thank you very much!! I really appreciate them! :o

Maggs, yes I have a -mental- list (a long one)! To summarise, I wanted to improve her jointing and her proportions. Also, her first head is too big and so are her hands, her feet are too small, her legs are too thin, her arms are too long... ad infinitum :p

kwmelvin, thanks!! I wish she was all one colour :o

armeleia - nuh uh! I just delayed posting until I had some progress :p

Jphobia, I'll try to get some more pictures of the joint soon - it's a bit experimental (...and difficult to manoeuvre with one hand).

Runy - How are you?! Are you still working on your dolls? I hope that you are. I'm always hoping you'll post! :))

shoelace and glimmer - thank you very much for your kind words!

A minor update. In fact, there's probably no difference visible at all (despite the fact I pretty much spent the whole day on her) :sweat

    11. Just a quick picture of how the face is progressing. I've since cut the headcap and added a nose. :)

      ...not quite symmetrical yet!

    12. Trying to do little bits here and there...

I've done some more work on her face and arms. Hopefully the next update won't be sooo far away!! I'm gearing myself up to start work on her hands and feet. :)

What dyou think?! All feedback welcome - good, bad, ugly! :p

    14. What about beautiful? I'm amased about how similar her head is to your concept plans... Brilliant work, aneemal!

    15. You've made me so happy by saying that, liu! :) I don't usually trust that I can follow a plan...

    16. She is looking great! I really like her face; I am looking forward to seeing her completed!

    17. oh my! you've translated that lovely long bridge of the nose from you 2d concept! that is no easy feat! she's wonderful!

    18. She's such a character and I see the Arabic influence. Her jaw is looking a bit weak though.

    19. I really like this face a lot. It's much more refined than your last sculpt! :)

    20. firefly: thank you! I can't wait to have her done, but it's taking me a while - as usual! :sweat

nezuMOUSII: hehe, you should see the nose on my previous doll - it was a real honker! Let's see how this one turns out! :o EDIT: She's there in my avatar <-----

Jphobia: I'm happy you see an ethnic influence... she's based a tiny bit on my twin (non-identical) who's up and left me for Australia!! Anywho, I agree with you about the jaw-line. I will try and strengthen it - thanks for pointing that out! :))

armeleia: I appreciate you saying so! You've created a bunch of really great faces (in a short space of time) and I admire how you manage to infuse each one with a little personality of it's own! :love

    21. A bit of progress, albeit slow...

I've started another face (present in the first photo), as I'm not sure the one below is exactly what I want. I'll keep it, but I'll work on the new one alongside.

      Any comments, critique welcome :o

    22. very interesting jointing, looks like it will be great for posing.

    23. Everything is so delicate and small! I'm strangely attracted to those dolly-elbows. They look so neat and perfect.

    24. I really love that first photo of your work-in-progress doll. :love
All the different colored materials look so wonderful together.
That photo could easily be a BJD-making poster!
Her overall proportions and shape are really, really pleasing.
I agree with Jphobia; those elbows look attractive, as well as those hip joints.
May I ask how that lower torso joint is going to work?

    25. Thanks glimmer, I really hope so!
Lol, Jphobia trust me nothing's anywhere close to being perfect!! :dead On dolly no.1 the elbows kept swivelling around too easily, so hopefully this design will be more controllable.
Thanks kwmelvin! I wish she were all one colour...
About the lower torso. It's basically an inversion of the normal type of joint, so that the ball is on the lower piece. I haven't got any photos yet to explain, but I'll endeavour to get some when it's looking a bit neater!! :o

I've been working on the new face...

Don't know how I'm going to get her smooth. How do people sand such minute areas - like around the nose in particular!?

      Thanks for looking! :)

    26. Sponge-sand-paper! That's how I do it, at least. I don't know how it'll hold up against milliput but on the Premix Im using, it works perfectly. You can find rolls if it on eBay. Its really sturdy so you can fold it to get into the corners of the nose ect. Anything you cant reach you can always try with a scalpel.

I'm loving the face so far. The eye and brow area especially. Have you got any pix without the hair? Keep us updated!

    27. Ooh, she is beautiful! I love her nose and mouth - and her body looks great!

    28. Such a pretty face! I like the work you've done, the shape and width of her eyes and delicate lips. I'd also like to see her without the hair. As for sanding tiny areas I like to use the smaller round point dremel bits.. but use them by hand of course ;p.

    29. Aha, thanks Jphobia, I will try to get me some sponge-sandpaper! I'm very happy to hear you like the face so far! :D
Thanks Aminoff! I decided to re-do some parts of the body because I found the different materials and their colours distracting and I lost all the details that I was trying so hard to save! >_<
crowtree, your kind words make me so happy. And thank you for the tips too - I will try the dremel bits. :)

Here she is as she is today - no wig, but not a great photo... sorry!
Looking forward to getting some more work done on her in the coming days... yay for bank holiday weekends! *whohoo* :D

    30. Loving the face especially of this sculpt!! And the body is also very interesting. I sand small areas with fine steel wool...

    31. Thanks for the tip twigling! I will certainly try that out. Glad you like her so far! :)

Ok, so I know it doesn't look like I've done anything since last time, but I have ...honest! Ok, not *so* much, but it's the little things. The things that I don't want to realise need changing when it's too late! So, I've been trying to refine the lower torso joint and the overall shape of the limbs, before I start cutting them up! I figure I should do my best to sand her all over before I do the jointing. I figure it's easier to sand larger pieces! Anywhoo... onto the photos! :o

    32. Her tiny boobies are so cute and she's looking so delicate. How's this going btw? I don't even recall seeing this last update, I mustve just completely missed it. :o

    33. I love the length of her torso, and the shape of it is really delicate.
Her legs are lovely and have a great shape- especially from above the knee down. I love that the hip joint doesn't wreck the overall line of the upper leg. Really well done.
And the face reminds me of Selma Blair in 'Hellboy'.
Can't wait to see this finished.

    34. Jphobia, I always find the boobies difficult to shape :o... I want them small, but not too 'perky'. I'm chasing after that teardrop shape that's hiding in there somewhere! :sweat

fairysquisher, lol I love your username... reminds me of 'Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book'! Thank you for your kind comments. I'm still battling with her shape and trying not to wreck it with the joints! The lower torso joint especially...

      What do you think?

P.S. Anyone else out there working on their ironing board? It's not like I don't have a desk... it's just that it's full. :p

    35. Haha, at least an ironing board is straight(and at least you own one ;-; damn you student liiiife). I work on an old warped oak coffee table so all my bebes have to learn to stand on rough terrain.

As small boobies go, she ought to have small mounds rather than tear drops. Tear-drops only form if theres any weight to them.
I recently saw really cute small breasts on this non-bjd figure I saw at a meet. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jezatron/5996230032/in/set-72157627204326247) Excuse the funny head though. :XD

      I missed Pirooz2! Hope she's going ok. ;-;

    36. Jphobia - I dunno, my boobs are pretty tiny, and still have the slight tear drop shape.

Unless you're going for mosquito bite barely developing breasts, I'd stay stick with what you're doing. Otherwise they might start looking like those pec implants that guys seem to be getting these days.

    37. Ironing board, you say? Well that has never occurred to me. Hmmmm....I think I just gained a new art-making surface.

Also, your girl is looking fantastic! I am so intrigued by the lower torso joint. Really cool, and I am looking forward to seeing how she poses. :)

LOLLL I will never be able to wash that image out of my brain. :p

    38. *Sneaks back in*

      Ummm... hi!

A year has passed, more or less. I tried to give up dolls and doll-making, but I failed miserably. Making things makes me happy! That's not exactly a noble objective but well, we're not hurting anyone, right?! :o

So, I hope it's okay if I rejoin the forum activity (although I never really left!) :arrr

I resumed work on what was once my 'new' doll. Here are some more recent photos, taken in the last week...

      [IMG] [IMG]

I'd appreciate any feedback you have, particularly in regard to the proportions. Do you think I should lengthen the shins? I know the head is large, but that's intentional because I think big-headed dolls are cute. If I can follow through with them, I have some ideas for alternative heads to fit the same body... if I ever get that far.

      Thanks for reading :))

    39. Oooh! I'm glad to see you're back to working on her! I'm looking forward to seeing how those joints will work out, they look really nice!

    40. She's looking good! I think it's hard to tell if the shins should be longer without feet, so I'd try putting those on first before you decide.

Looking forward to seeing more! :)

    41. Oh thanks, Aminoff! I'm getting happier with the joints as I keep working on them, and I'm hoping they will translate as well into porcelain... I'm hoping to cast in porcelain this time, rather than resin :o

Good idea, Morgan! You're right, I think feet should be next on my agenda! Having feet would also help me do some test-stringing. Yep, feet it is!

Sunday, I did some work to her torso. Here I've lengthened it and tried to carve some basic detail. Also, I lowered the curve of her hips. I prefer the overall shape now, but I still think the transition of the joints could be smoothed out further still...

It's nice to be back :)

    42. I really love your design of her jointing....*0*
      They seem so complicated!
Can't wait to see more photos of her working process.

    43. Her new shape is lovely! I also admire your jointing system, and have no doubt that she will look beautiful in porcelain. Do you know how big she will be in porcelain, after she's shrunk down? I have a thing for mature tinies. (Let me know if you're interested in a trade when all's said and done, haha. I'd really love an Omnia.)

Can't say about the shins until you add feet but the head actually doesn't look too big to me, proportionally. It fits with the overall style.

    44. Thank you!

Thank you so much, Amily! Honestly, they're not as complicated as they might seem!... When I test-string her, I'd like to make a short video clip to show how the parts fit together and how they move :))

Oh, WOW! Sailor, that's a huge massive compliment and greatly appreciated *^_^* I would love to trade and have your soldier has her companion and protector!!! lol

The 'prototype' is 23cm and depending on the shrinkage rate of the slip, the porcelain version might end up somewhere between 18.5 - 20cm... which originally worried me, as being too small, but then I remembered these:

      Omi-Kopto 12 by box_x_dolls, on Flickr

So delicate at 14.5cm. I think they're stunning :love

I'm feeling all fired-up about this project. Before I go to sleep, I go through in my mind how I'll set up each mould and the process that follows... I count moulds instead of sheep, lol! :XD

    45. Ahh I love tiny BJDs! I know exactly how you feel about molds-- I must've spent a whole week drawing them and contemplating what could go wrong before I mustered up the will to start.

    46. she's looking lovely! I'm looking forward to see more of her!

    47. Hey Sailor, I tried to view your tumblr, but the url doesn't seem to be working?

      Thanks a lot, Susan!

Today I took some progress photos of how I'm tackling the feet. This is how far I got:

I started the hands the same way, but still debating how to do the fingers. I tried using wire, but I don't think that method's going to work for me.

      As always, thanks for looking!

    48. Oops, the link should be working now.

I like your approach to feet and hands, they look really good! And fleshy, in that I feel like I could poke them and they would feel like real feet. I would recommend wire for the fingers. Every time I've made fingers/toes without them they've broken, and there's really no point in fixing them at that point because they'll break again and again at the weak spot. (Superglue is a false hope.) Wire fixes that problem though.

Anyway, I love seeing your updates! Keep 'em coming <3

    49. Yes, I love how the feet and hands have turned out so far.

    50. THIS! I would LOVE to see how your girl's hip joint works! How much it bends etc! I'm having troubles with my boy's hip joint, as I'm not sure how much he should be able to bend it etc, and I can't for the life of me find any decent pictures to see how I might go about things.

Also, interesting approach to sculpting the hands and feet... Mind if I try it out too? I really need to redo the hands and feet I've made for Ask so far. X'D

    51. Counting molds instead of sheep? I thought I was the only one ^^; Its nice to see work started on her again!

    52. I'm very impressed with the amount of detail you put into the feet and am intrigued on the process. They look really well, the whole doll does. Though I can't believe how small she is. :) Good luck with the rest.

    53. those feet are gorgeous - and very cool way of building them up. she is so delicate but lovely - you inspire/shame me to try harder!!! can't wait to see more? I really like the hip joints you have going, and would also like to see more when you test-string her.

    54. Six months later...

I thought I'd resurrect my thread with some new photos, because I am still working at this doll even though I feel as though she's a completely different doll from how she started out. I was in half a mind to make a new thread, not least of all because I'm ashamed to admit that I started this thread nearly three years ago now :XD Yikes! But hey-ho, my hope has been boosted by the fact that she is strung! And I've given her a new name too.

Critique and feedback are welcome and appreciated :))

    55. oh I LOVE her! and I'm glad she's back! She has such a gentle nice sort of feeling and good engineering too, by the looks of it. One thing that slightly sticks out to me (could be the angle of the photos, esp the first two) is that her neck looks slightly too long to me. It does go well with the aesthetic though.

    56. Beautiful! I love her half-lidded sort of sleepy/mischievous look. And she looks like she poses beautifully!

Only thing I can think to tweak is the arms - maybe it's just the photos or an intentional aesthetic choice, but her upper arms look a bit thinner than her forearms, especially around the upper arm/armpit area where it gets quite thin (possibly thinned for posability around the breasts?).

    57. Thank you so much, sailor and HystericalParoxysm - your comments really mean a lot to me!

sailor, you might be right about the neck. I like the aesthetic of long necks, but not oddly long. I will take off a couple of mms when I work on the neck joint some more. The part I'm really struggling with at the moment is the shaping of the belly. I want that lower torso joint to be smoother, but in general I feel like the contours of her lower belly and hips aren't right at all. I've been looking at your lady for inspiration and I think I need to study some reference material too, to help me with that area.

HystericalParoxysm, you're right too! The upper arms are thinner, but not by design - so that's also something that needs fixing. Although I think the elbow is the widest point of the arm(?), I do think it would look better if I made the lower arms slimmer. Yep, it does help for posing, being that thin up top - I wanted her arms to fall naturally at her sides. Also, if this makes sense I'm going to go back and try and make them fall at an angle from the elbow, so they don't just fall straight down.

Will hopefully post more progress soon! :))

      Thanks again, for your encouragement!

    58. I agree I love the look of her face with her lids have shut, and I really like the overall shape of her body.

    59. She's looking great! My only critique is that I feel like her neck might be a hair too long. Love her eyes and lips!

    60. Thank you for your comment Allison! I hope oneday to be able to try casting her in porcelain, so I also want to thank you for the information you share on your website! :)

Thanks Morgan! I do agree - I need to shorten the neck and perhaps widen it at the base (so there more of a slope into the shoulders).

Here are a few more pics showing some progress with the jointing. I really want her to be able to hold this pose (knees to chest) quite easily, so I'm working on making the joints lock. In the second photo you can see the 'lip' on her back which will help the upper torso lean forward (although it should be this visible).

      [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Sorry for the poor quality of the photos! Thank you for looking! :))
