~20cm Dolls Rowantree Prototype: Capricorn

Jan 20, 2020

    1. Hello! I'm eventually going to be working on 40cm size dolls with adult proportions and features but I'm starting with a teeny chibi style doll so that I'm using less materials as I work out the kinks of my system. (I love the teenies, like soom's gem series too).

This is Capricorn; my prototype sketch:

I'm working in Z-Brush and Rhino to get the model and printing it with an anycubic resin printer. When I have a working model, it'll be finished and sanded before pulling molds with polyurethane resin. I'm really, really hoping to have a prototype in polyurethane by the PNW BJD Expo. Fingers crossed!

    2. Hmm, the images don't appear to be working from Imgur but you can see them here: Capricorn Sketch

    3. You still need an Imgur login to see the pictures. Not everyone has one. :(

    4. Hmm, aw, that's true. Here, let me see if these work:

      There we go!

    5. cute! the 3D model and the sketches look quite different face type wise, are you planing to adjust accordingly or keep what you sculpted :)?

    6. I'm going to keep what I sculpted, I think! The face sketch was pretty loose as I was focused on the body layout and joints. I'm going to tweak the ears a bit more flared.

    7. I made another run at the face to get a more anthro look. Trying to decide which I like better.

      I'm thinking this one, though.

    8. Personnally I like the second one better too :) It seems kinder ^_^
I love the idea of zodiac dolls, that is awesome! Good luck with the project! Can't wait to see how it goes! :)

    9. Thanks! I have the body sculpt done as well as the lower legs and ears. I'm working on the hands, hooves and tail today. I'm getting my full copy of Rhino this week so I'll be able to assemble all the pieces and generate the joints. (My background is in architecture which is why I'm using Rhino. I'm already familiar with that program rather than learning one of the others that are a bit more common in this hobby.)

I'm really hoping to start 3-D printing by the first week in February. I'm still debating the goat tail or a more fishy tail. I'll probably end up sculpting both to see which I like better.

    10. Yeah, stick with what you know, if it can o the job! It'll be faster and easier for you :)

I was gonna say before reading the end, "do both tails!" :)
Good luck with the printing! :)

    11. It's going! I've been wrestling with getting the resin printer to work just right. I've been making progress on the sculpting and thought I'd put another in progress picture up here. (The chest needs to be narrowed and sculpted a bit more and the thigh is the rough shape that needs to be smoothed.)

But I've gotten the 3d printer working. Here's the inverse for a mold that I'm making for 10mm eyes. Resin printers have fantastic detail but the long flat planes are harder to get perfectly smooth. I'll probably test the head print later this week to check and see what its looking like.

    13. Oooh he's looking great! :D

    14. Thank you! Finished the arms, hooves and tail today. I think I'm going to print the whole body unjointed to double check the sculpt before I jump into making all the channels and joints fully sculpted on the inside.
