Round Doll Stringing Elastic Cord Questions

Jul 18, 2010

    1. Question 1:
What are the recommended sizes of round doll stringing elastic cord for various size Ball Jointed Dolls?

      For example:
      1.5mm for dolls 4 to 6 inches?
      3.5mm for dolls 16 to 20 inches?

      Question 2:
What is a reputable doll supply company that carries good quality round doll stringing elastic cord? Do they have a secure online ordering form? Have you had good dealings with this company? USA? Europe? Asia? Other?

      Question 3:
How much round doll stringing elastic cord should I order for a ___ size Ball-Jointed Doll?

      For example:
      ___ yards/meters for a 30cm Ball Jointed Doll.
      ___ yards/meters for a 40cm Ball Jointed Doll.
      ___ yards/meters for a 60cm Ball Jointed Doll.
      Other sizes?

I am located in the USA, and so far, I have found these three companies:
      http://www.kemperdolls.com/index.php?link=product&ID=137
      http://www.dollspart.com/spgm.cfm?dpt=H&srch=KW&item=12001
      https://secure.wavi.com/allaboutdolls/cgi-bin/shopper?key=MT822&preadd=action
Any feedback, positive or otherwise about these companies?

    2. I've bought eyes from kemper. Mind, they're cheap eyes to act as placeholders during sculpting. But the eyes were exactly as advertised.

    3. Kemper has been around forever. Nothing fancy, but it is a solid company to do business with. What you see is what you get.

    4. I've bought stands, S-hooks and those little resin cookies from CoolCat on eBay. Haven't bought elastic from them, but they seem to be a very good dealer and have good feedback.

Dollspart sells an elastic sampler package which might be a good way to test drive various thicknesses. The other thing they have that I love are "doll screws", like a combination hook and spring. You can use them in the head in lieu of S-hooks.

    5. oo thanks for posting the links! I have bought from kemper before but didnt know they had elastics doh.

    6. You can also get/use that shock cord stuff which is sometimes used for shoe-laces.

    7. I get my elastic from the hardware store, they only ever have the synthetic weave but It's very heavy duty stuff. they have a variety of sizes usually. I get the 1/8" or 3.5mm size for my dolls which mostly range from 35-80cm except the DZ Kay who I've never restrung...

    8. coolcat elastic is pretty fabulous (and fast) - its strong but has a great range of stretch to it. I've found some fabric stores do stock round elastic but the degree of stretch vs strength often isn't as good as buying from the doll-based suppliers.

Kemper are forever having sales and they ship pretty fast too - I've had a dealers account with them for about 3 1/2 years now and they are great - their elastic in bulk is great!!

      Re:
That all depends on the dolls arm/leg length and how you prefer to string them - as a general rule with the arms independent to the head and body you use the elbow to elbow measurement for the arms x 2 + 1" to allow for a knot, and for the legs measure from head/neck to mid-calf x 4 + 1" - then of course it depends on your personal preference regarding how tight/loose you prefer your dolls strung - some wont pose without tight stringing others kick and bend unless it is looser....

    9. Round Doll Stringing Elastic Cord

Today I bought some round doll stringing elastic cord. I found it at a doll shop in the next town over. I purchased it for 49 cents per yard. I now have 10 yards of 3/16 inch (~4mm) cord and 2 yards of 1/8 inch (~3mm) cord. This stuff is very strong elastic. They also had some thicker cord, but I didn't think I'd need anything that strong to string a 60cm dolly. I'll probably use the 3/16 inch cord to string the head/body/legs, and the 1/8 inch cord to string the arms.

I also got a pair of 16mm green glass eyes, and a pair of 16mm green acrylic eyes. The glass eyes have a flat back, and the acrylic eyes are round with a tube coming out from the back.

Besides the elastic and the eyes, I picked up 2 gallons of CompoBell CS-1000 Doll Composition Slip. I think I have everything I need to finish making my first 60cm BJD.

    10. Sounds like a productive shopping trip! :)

    11. Dritz Round Cord Elastic

Today I went over to my local JoAnn's Fabric to see what they carried in the way of elastic. I found the following round elastic for $1.59+tax. It was on sale for $0.86+tax per 5yd package, so I bought two packages.

This elastic is a little over 1mm, but less than 2mm in diameter, being closer to 1/16th of an inch in diameter. It stretches about 2.5x a pinched length, i.e. if I pinch 1cm, I can stretch it 2.5cm (1/2 inch --> 1.25 inches). It seems to be very strong for its size. I think it is suitable for stringing tiny BJDs.

      Dritz Round Cord Elastic.
      # 9342W
      5 yd (4.5m)

      Light stretch elastic cord.

      Uses:
      * Doll/Baby Clothes
      * Buttonhole Loops

      Care:
      Hand wash/air dry or machine
      washable/dryable at low temperatures

      Fiber Content:
      40% Polyester / 60% Rubber

      Made in China

    12. I can stretch the 3mm and 4mm round elastic cords about 2x a pinched length. Both are very strong. Since they were purchased from a bulk spool, I don't have any other information about them.

    13. As this thread is already about elastics, I guess my question does fit in here:

In the meantime, I have assembled and disassembled my man several times. I bought a round, elastic cord in a sewing shop, which is approx. 3 mm thick.

Although I never can see it on internet pics, but is "real" doll elastics any different from this stuff? Because I have strung his legs quite tightly in the beginning, and now they are hanging down from the hips and knees very loosely from just picking him up and sitting him down again. It looks horrible.

If doll elastics is a different stuff, I will certainly have to get it.

    14. That doesn't sound right to me.
Most of the people who own dolls don't have to restring their dolls, even after owning them for months or years.

What happens if you restring him? Does the elastic continue to lose its elasticity?

Even the small round elastic I bought at JoAnn's is still tight on my test piece. I would expect it to last for months or years on a Tiny BJD.

At least post the brand name, and any other information you have about the elastic you bought (item number, store name, etc.), so others can avoid it.

    15. Brand name? I do not know it, really. I bought it in a tiny store in a town near my place. This stuff is pretty normal for sewing purposes, but perhaps not suitable for holding heavy things.

Maybe this happens because he is really heavy? He is made of Aves Apoxie. but I put him on my kitchen scale, he weighs about 1.6 kgs. I have no clue how much the usual 60 cm guy weighs.

    16. Sewing elastic is sometimes too soft and stretchy for doll stringing. I think it's something to do with how much rubber in the elastic and how tightly it's wound. Your heavy Apoxie guy might do better with a sturdy doll elastic.

    17. What a great store! I wish I could order from there. :)

What is that color? A pigment to be mixed with clay?

    18. No, it seems to be mixed ready to use. It serves both as basecoat and skin color. So I guess even I can use this stuff. The lady said one of these pots is sufficient for a 60 cm doll, and there will even be a little leftover.

    19. I have one more question: What are the average wall sizes of dolls you can normally buy (e.g. from Volks, Luts, Dollmore, etc.).

Maybe as I just inserted the cable insulation, sculpted it and then let it dry, his limbs could be a tad heavy even for the best elastic cord? E.g. his upper tigh is to a major part more than 1 cm thick

Because if I take e.g. 3 cm of my elastic and stretch it, I can pull it up to 6 cm and no more. That should be not too bad, I guess.

      However, I do not know...

    20. I have a Domuya where the the thighs are completely solid except for a small hole drilled through the center, and on the other extreme I used to have a Dollmore Sara where the walls were quite thin, less than half a cm. Most of my BJDs have walls of 1- 1.5 cm or so. The thickness varies by part.

    21. I had Alex at my parents during Christmas. Before I had restrung him very tightly, and again now his legs are hanging off his hips.

Instead of trying different elastic, I decided to give him a kind of mobility joint. I cut the first upper tigh, and I think it is pretty obvious that even the very best elastic in the world cannot do the job here:

Right now, my Dremel is heavily working to remove a good amount of Apoxie. I have already looked at his lower legs, and I think I can carefully remove material also from there. Same goes for his arms. Then we shall see...

    22. Thank-you for that wall-thickness information, Alewife! :D
I do not own a company BJD, so I have also been curious about wall thickness.
The wall thicknesses on resin BJDs look thin to me from the pictures I've seen.
I'm guessing that the walls have been tapered at the joints?
Alewife: What size round elastic cords were in the company dolls with 1.5+cm thick walls?

I have three sizes of round elastic cord in my studio now.
The largest size is ~4.5mm (~3/16in), and it is very strong.
The middle size is ~3mm (~1/8in), and it is the one I will probably string Aalish with.
The smallest size is ~1.5mm (~1/16in), and I will use it for tinies.

The thing is, I'm planning on casting my BJD using Doll Composition Slip.
DCS is very similar to porcelain slip, except it doesn't need to be fired in a kiln.
With slips the wall thicknesses are fairly uniform, and can range from 1/16in, up.
This is because a plaster mold sucks moisture from the slip along the walls of the mold.
If the consistency of the plaster is uniform, the walls of the casting will be uniform.
I estimate that a thick wall in Aalish will be no more than 4 to 4.5mm thick.
Aalish is going to be ~60cm in height.

I don't know what size of round elastic cord Modelhorse is using that is stretching?
However, I think that the 4.5mm (3/16in) round elastic cord that I have, could tension a lot of weight!

Alternatively, since there are already stringing holes in Modelhorse's BJD, those holes could be pilot holes for drilling the limbs out with larger holes? Then, spring-tensioning could be used, with springs, swivels, and wires? Spring-tensioning is how Martha Armstrong-Hand tensioned her porcelain BJDs, some of which were 18in (~45cm) tall.
Most of the other porcelain BJD makers that I am familiar with, also use spring tensioning.

Of course, if you want to discuss spring-tensioning a BJD, another thread should be started, since this thread is mainly for round elastic cord questions. ;)

    23. Most of the 60cm-or-so BJDs I have, use elastic in the 3-4mm range. I have some bigger, heavier dolls, 65-70cm, where 3mm elastic is totally inadequate for their weight. They have the problem Modelhorse mentions, where the thighs dangle out of the hip sockets. I restrung one of them with 4.5mm elastic and it really helps. I'm a firm believer in stringing the doll with as heavy an elastic as will fit in the slots-- at least for the resin dolls.

On the other hand, I couldn't use heavy elastic on the paperclay doll I made, for fear of damaging the joints.

Regarding the hole drilled through the solid part, as with my Domuya-- it actually causes problems because the hole limits the elastic size. You can only use 3mm max, and that's too thin for the weight of the doll. I've heard of people drilling out their Domuyas so they could restring with thicker elastic.

    24. So I will widen the holes. I guess it will also increase the fun of playing with Alex.

    25. I hope it does! :)
