Props Room box ceiling tiles?

Dec 25, 2020

    1. I'm furnishing a 1:4 scaled room box I had commissioned (not arrived yet, but planning ahead with materials). It's around two feet in all directions, so it took me a while to come up with a solution on how to wallpaper it. In the end I had a seamless pattern printed on paper large enough to use as wallpaper. My issue now is what to do with the ceiling. I'm going for a bit of a fancy style if I can, and I'd love to do either an embossed ceiling or embossed ceiling tiles. I'm just not sure how to do it. Can't print a picture on paper, it'll just be 2d.

I considered buying an actual ceiling tile (24"x24") but the aesthetic of each I've looked at is way too big a scale for 1:4. I've looked at embossed dollhouse ceiling tiles but they were 1:12 and not seamless for me to use more than one together.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in this? I don't want to use something that is going to end up being too heavy. I'm a bit worried though because I do have a little chandelier and I'm worried the ceiling will eventually sag.

    2. Have you looked at embossed scrapbooking paper? I think I've seen some square designs at Michael's that were closer to 1:4 than 1:12, and there's embossing stamps like this one that I'm sure you could get to work by hand without the advertised machine (it all used to be hand-done, after all). With some puff paint for extra raised detailing and drybrushing to emphasize the raised design, it should look nice and metallic ^^
For the ceiling backer, how about 1" pink insulation foamboard with a layer of wood-glue-based paper maché to seal it? It's non-warping and you could add a wooden furring strip of paint stirrer sticks or something to distribute the weight of the chandelier.

    3. I'm not looking to handmake anything for various reasons, but I'll try to look and see if there's embossed scrapbooking paper that is seamless, since the initial area is pretty big.

I'm wondering if something like this will do the trick, it's certainly the right dimensions.

    4. If you can't find scrapbook paper that fits your needs, you can also look at embossed wallpaper. You'd probably end up with more than you need for one roombox. The wallpaper comes both primed to be painted any color or in various colors/patterns.

    5. I used embossed scrapbook paper, and I think it looks fabulous. I added wooden beams to support the ceiling and hide seams.

    6. That looks really great!

    7. @Natsunekko Wow, the beams to hide the seams (no rhyme intended) is a brilliant idea! They look really good, too. I might consider something similar, because I'm worried the magnet chandelier might make the ceiling sag after a while.
