I've had an account here for years, and for a bit became inactive, but now I'm getting back into BJD things. I mainly want to create my characters as dolls, and possibly make my own dolls since I am a 3D artist/animator. I will be modeling my characters, but thing is I'm not sure if a pack of correctly sized joints exist that I can slice an existing leg and attach it to. I'm great with sculpting, but a little wary of "engineered" parts since they need to be perfect to not wobble, and without having a ton of experience see that some dolls have specifically placed "slits" so that a foot/knee/thy can bend specific ways and hold. A pre-existing "Frankenstein" part pack at correct BJD size would be amazing- but if not, well, I'll figure it out I suppose. (I'll probably do 1/6th size or "Barbie" size, the latter just because outfits would be so much more accessible with a lower price tag. I'm a 3D sculptor not a seamstress.) The idea of having others want my sculpts as their own doll is an amazing idea but I don't know how realistic it is. Some of my art: https://www.artstation.com/rayavidlebon
Welcome back to life~ Printed articulated/ball-jointed dolls are popping up all over the place these days. It's pretty cool what artists are able to do! Thankfully there seems to be a lot of help and shared knowledge out there. Just be mindful about where on DOA you try to discuss them. As off-topic dolls, they are limited to the BJD Making Workshop and Brigadoon boards, but it's a good idea to refresh your memory on the rules in case they have been modernized since you last were active around here. Whether the dolls you produce will eventually be eligible for discussion on Den of Angels will depend on how far you take their production in terms of ultimately casting the model after all sculpting is to your liking, then getting approval in Ask the Mods.. but in the meantime you will find a safe place to discuss and seek advice for bringing them into the third dimension in the BJD Making Workshop forums. For a base model / joints you can work around, you may be interested in looking up Aelith Art. They offer a few models in various styles that seem compatible with your art style, and actively encourage editing the models to make new and original characters. I've printed a couple of their models, both with and without modifications, and they have turned out nice in spite of my being a complete beginner on an entry-level printer. There are of course plenty more out there. I only feel qualified to recommend the one I've had experience with. Good luck to you! (edited after checking the rules to see exactly where they're eligible to be discussed, and for clarity)
