Maintenance Restringing an Iplehouse SID male body (latest edition)

Mar 16, 2023

    1. A thoughtful friend shipped my latest Iplehouse SID boy body from the States and to save on shipping costs we agreed to unstring him and send him in two parts.

When I unpacked him he was in two sections, the upper torso/chest part with arms fully assembled, and the lower torso with legs fully assembled.

I've also got the Iplehouse assembly manual showing how how he goes together.

So it all looked straightforward. There were two loops of stringing elastic inside his lower body and I guessed that I had to snag them with a stringing tool and pull them through his upper torso and out of his neck hole.

Only I couldn't do it. I'm not strong enough to pull the elastic all the way through the torso and up through the neck. It doesn't seem to go further than the top of the lower body, and it's already incredibly tight.

This is a fairly tall body but I can usually string them. So I got my husband to have a go and he couldn't get it any further than the top of the lower torso joint either.

Though the body is second-hand, I'm pretty sure this is how he came strung from the factory. So either Iple strung him incredibly tight, or my aging muscles aren't up to the job.

I'm wondering if I need to unstring his lower body and start from the top down? Can anyone advise me?

(The tools I've got include a neck hook, a long stringing tool with wooden handle, haemostats ands various odd things like pencil stubs.)

(Apologies if I don't reply first thing but I'm nocturnal!)

    2. Also nocturnal, and an Iplehouse fan so will leave my two cents.
Ok so first off with me and my dolls from Iplehouse, 9 out of ten times have always been strung a little on the too loose side. I think that's to make sure nothing breaks from tension in shipping. So if you are unable to pull the strings up you might not have enough elastic to do so.

Second and this is again a me thing, I always find it easier to restring SIDs and nYIDs starting from neck down following the IH guide booklet. There is a kind of weird string criss-cross in the lower torso where the legs attach and strings can be tightish there sometimes, but shouldn't be so much so you can no pull them up to neck. This makes me think you might want to fully unstring him try starting at neck and see if the string is indeed a bit too short.

      Hope that helps a bit.

    3. Ooh, thank you! That's definitely helpful. I think restringing from the top down is definitely the way to go.

I'm a bit intimidated by the leg/hip joint crossover stringing, which looks really fiddly. But I hope tackling the elastic tension will make it easier to do.

    4. The part that's really kicking my ass is getting the elastic knot through the head slot for my girl tbh. I did realize that the way they have the pelvic locks on the very first image is how to put them in since the photo on that step wasn't useful...

    5. Sometimes you may have to re-tie the knot. I have found this a problem on several occasions because I tend to have hybrid dolls.

I haven't attempted to restring my guy yet as I've been ill, but I'm hoping to try it soon. The pelvic locks look pretty daunting!

There are all kinds of useful tools, like a stringing tool and hemostats, as well as more basic things like shoelaces :)

    6. It's definitely a task that requires a ribbon tied to the elastic, I found it easiest to thread the second elastic loop underneath the first crossed loop as opposed to having them be side by side inside the hole if that makes sense. I'm not sure if they will have things differently for a man, but I would guess it's similar...
I simply gave up and put her knot in the chest cavern and restrung her that way so she's good now. Of course the restringing tool I had bought snapped, :sigh but I made do with a random metal sewing implement and some ribbon.

    7. The ribbon was a very good idea! I lost my stringing tool.

Eventually managed to put him together :)
