Hi all! I ordered a wig a while back (3 weeks ago) and its just arrived. I dont know if i made a mistake and read the listing wrong or the person put it up as a different size. Unfortunately it was a second hand wig so cant exchange it.. As well as this its my IDEAL style and colour. (long straight, ginger, with bangs). So I dont really want to order a different wig, especially since i waited 3 weeks for it to arrive. Is there a way i can make it smaller? (i believe after trying it on her that its 8-9 instead of of 7-8) Ive tried looking but cant really find much about how to do this apart from places with broken images or ones that ardent in depth enough. Anybody have any tips to do this? is it possible? Thanks all and hope you're staying safe
You could try adding a wig cap to your doll? See if that helps at all. Also here's a decent looking tutorial don't know if you've seen it? It seems to suggest you essentially add a dart to shrink the size of the wig, in a similar way to how you resize clothes ~Altering and Repairing Doll Wigs~
Yeah ive tried a wig cap and its still a good inch too large, it literally is too large to stay on the head . Thanks so much for the link, ill take a look and see if i can use that method!
I turn the wig inside out, fold it in half so I've got the center back & the curve up over the top. Make sure the back hair is falling out of the fold, (not caught going down in the fold to add bulk & lose hair volume). Then you can baste stitch a dart up the back on the inside. Slowly narrowing as you go up the back fold. It will leave a slight thickness under the hair at the back of the head but that doesn't tend to bother me too much when it's the perfect wig & the wrong size. ;} Also, basting stitches mean it will be easier to undo later if you want the wig larger or need to redo the work for this head. Good luck!
I'm glad i've seen this, and thanks for the links / tips. I have a wig that other than being a bit wibbly is pretty much perfect. I didn't even think of sewing in a dart to make it tighter! At the moment he has a blob of eye putty on his head keeping it still.
Im going to write a full write up including pics tomorrow! But just an update - we have success!!! I had to do a trim job on the fringe/bags since the wig was originally too deep so the fringe too long. But the darting method worked amazingly. I put a silicone cap under it and since the wig was a little deep it allowed me to position it just right! Hang tight for picture upload and possible step by step (coming tomorrow)
Thank you for this topic, before that I somehow did not even think about trying to reduce the unsuitable wig, but now I will definitely try! One of my dolls has a head between the standard sizes, so this seems to be the only way. Thanks again.
I bought a hard cap wig that was a 6/7 and I needed a 4/5 but loved the wig. When it arrived, I took the wig and holding it upside down, with the wig as a little cup sort of, I filled it with hot water from the tap, and let it sit in the wig only a minute or two. Poured out the water, then placed it in the dolls head (which was covered in Saran Wrap), putting the front edge where I wanted it on her head. Then since the cap was soft, I molded it tight against her head starting in the front going back. Then I just pinched the back together and made a dart like I was going to take in fabric, and clipped the folded extra piece together. Carefully took it off and cut the folded over extra width off and left just enough to stick the two sides together inside the wig. I added a couple of hand stitches just to make sure it stayed, but as soon as it started drying again it was good to go! The trick was to only get the cap wet for a minute, barely long enough to soften the glue, so that there wasn’t any shrinkage or anything. It worked great......just an idea if you have any hard cap wigs you think you can’t use.
Thanks for linking this! I'm waiting on a wig to arrive that I know is too big but that i'm obsessed with so I'm totally gonna try this technique when it gets here.
