50–65cm Dolls Resinbitz Dolls | Dogwood & Havana SD heads

Feb 3, 2020

    1. Hello!

I have been working on two heads that I want to print and make SD! I dubbing them Havana and Dogwood. (I am Resinbitz on instagram so I added that to the title because I would use that to signify I made them over my doa username!)

I am going to try my best to document my journey on here and other places!

      ------------------
Just to keep track of some costs associated with making heads:
      ---Current spending: $308
$33: spent on first dogwood head, headcap, & shipping
$25: Second printing of dogwood head, no headcap & shipping (roughly cant remember exact XD)
$10: zbrushcore monlty subscription, but will need to upgrade to $40 a month version to finish heads
      $40: 1st month of zbrush
$200: Ender 3 FDM printer and first roll of filament

    2. Inspirations
      Overall:
I am hoping their look ends up semi-realistic. My doll crew is definitely that and I want them to look like they fit. So more sculptural features than say dollzone but bigger eyes than like perhaps Granado? Head size will be smaller than volks and switch. I love aprilstory sized heads. I have a aprilstory luke who's head looks great on my dollzone 62cm body, ios70 body and my previously owned universedoll 72cm body. For me, thats the goldilocks zone I want to replicate.

      Havana:
They are based off a sketch I did of my character Markus. My hope is to bring him to life as finding a shell looking at all close is a pipe dream!

      Dogwood:

They are based on my character Ben! They are currently shelled as two dolls, Withdoll Juwell and Dollzone Merlin. Those dolls have definitely helped certain features get attached to my character and I wanted to try my hand at sculpting what I think those mixed together would look like as well as my preferences for sculpted features? His shells have always been softer than I imagined him but those traits have also now grown on him because of that.

One thing I am deviating from is their lower lip shape. I've always wanted to try heart shaped lips, as cartoony as that might seem definitely the reason for the smaller lower lip in my sculpt

    4. Currently, I'm waiting to see if I can use my campus's 3D printer, shapeways is too expensive for the amount of test prints I might have to do! For fun I have been doing fun photo edits using apps.

    5. i like how string their features are! it's interesting how much softer dogwood looks in colour compered to the grey model

    6. Thank you for picking up on that! I'm hoping that means he's versatile! I like both the soft and hard look

    8. I think there is differences from what I sculpted and what is printed from the pictures. (Will see irl on Friday!) I think it has to do with the zbrush camera and focal length I sculpted with?

      Anyone know what's the best camera perspective settings to have? I cant find info on this ;u;

Here's is a picture kind of explaining what I think is happening.

Red is what I think print and exported files look like (I can preview .stl and .obj files in preview on Mac)

Green is how I see it in Zbrush for the most part

Zbrush's camera settings aren't clear enough for me that I can intuitively understand what the settings mean or do btw!

      *UPDATE 01/2023
      Use these settings:

    11. My thoughts summed up are profile good, front bad

I need to re-sculpt eyes, neck and play with the depth and height of features. I still think there is something off about my zbrush camera!

Top of scull/forehead can also be bigger while the head cap can be a little smaller

Next print round I'll print a tiny bit smaller

    12. After comparing zbrush camera settings with other people I discovered my version has a new camera and my settings were not accurate to what would be printed!

    13. After changing my camera view I rearranged the features of Dogwood. I also resculpted his nose.

His sculpt name is from the many plants that are associated with it! Ben is associated with dog and plants so it seemed a good way to nod to both. There are Dogwood trees around where I live too! Inside the wigcap I'm going to sculpt a Dogwood blossom at the very end.

    14. Wow they both look great! Havana has an amazing presence.
I love Dogwood's nose and that lower lip is just too cute. Good luck and I can't wait to see the next printing of him.

    15. @SteamWitch Thank you so much! I can't wait to print again! Need to work on the neck hole now!

    16. They look awesome! Beautiful sculpts, both of them! I totally know what you mean about zbrush camera settings not necessarily matching up with how it looks when its printed, I have never thought to check my camera settings though.

I think they will look awesome when you are finished. :aheartbea

    17. I really like the design, love to se more progress! <3

    18. Beautiful boys! The printed head looks so good with your other heads!

Oh, and I can totally relate to the "WYSIWYG - not!" - feeling you described in post #8. It's not only about camera settings, my prints aren't exactly what I see on my screen either. I guess these affordable printers have their limits …

    19. I HIGHLY SUGGEST TO FIND THE DEFAULT SETTINGS FOR ZBRUSH CAMERA! If that doesn't work try below:

This is a really hard thing to explain but wanted to document my progress!

So the colored pictures are what I see in the zbrush program as I’m sculpting. The grey is the file that gets exported and used for printing.

You can see the old preview has smaller eyes/nose/lips and shorter Cupid’s bow in comparison to what was exported. Printing confirmed that the export is how it will look printed as my print is closer to looks of that than my old zbrush preview.

It’s very confusing to sculpt one thing and have it export/print looking completely different. This is where the zbrush camera settings make a difference.

To avoid having to adjust and resculpt like I did, (though I’m more happy with my changes than annoyed) don’t sculpt heads without dynamic preview on especially! Although, I did have it on, my camera settings were off enough that it flattered the view similar to what happens when you turn it off.

      *UPDATE 01/2023
settings I use to avoid this issue!
      ————
Once you have dynamic perspective on but still have issues like me, export an .obj or .stl file and preview it. Compare that preview with your zbrush file and adjust zbrush camera till they look the same. I can’t guarantee my exact settings will be right for you, because differences in zbrush upates/versions but I think this method is good to try if you have same issue!

BUT NOW, it’s better and you can see the new zbrush preview looks way closer to what gets exported from it (labeled new export in first photo of this post).

    20. I’ve sent my file to be printed. The person printing my head said they will start Thursday. It’s very hard to be patient!

      • x 1
    21. Oh congrats! I can't wait to see the 'real thing'! I understand about it being hard to be patient. Waiting for something to arrive is difficult.

    22. I wish I had my own printer but upkeep and troubleshooting is way too intimidating

    23. He looks great! There’s a lot of character in the sculpt.

With buying your own printer - maybe when it’s back in stock a Prusa Mini would be a good choice? There’s still some maintenance and troubleshooting, but they’re much friendlier than a lot of machines. You could also look at the Print This reddit - people print stuff for money there and there might be some people who live closer to you!

    24. Thank you for the info! For future stuff when I can I’ll look into this!

    25. Very nice! I really dig your sculpting

I got my second print!!!! The head is too small compared to any SD head but it looks great on the Dollzone 62cm. Next print I’ll print bigger. The neck hole needs lots of work but the face I’ll only tweak a tiny bit this time! I don’t think it will look such different next time

    28. It looks better with every new post. I like his aesthetics so much!

    29. He is so cuuuute!! I love how he looks with the glasses in that one pic that you mocked up. Shoot, now I'm nervous about what my exported sculpt will look like and my camera settings in ZBrush.....may I ask what you have your camera set to in ZBrush now that everything is looking correct? I guess I could also open it in Maya and check how it looks....I feel you, I like mildly get camera settings, but it also doesn't totally make sense to me. :)

    30. Though I have printed sculpted accessories in ZBrush and haven't had issues with them looking different so maybe it's fine! :XD:

Mine are now the default! I definitely messed it up playing with settings I didn't know anything about originally XD

It looks like this right now: [IMG]

@Caramello_Cat Thank you so much! I feel really good about how my drawing style is kinda coming through XD!

    33. I am also working on a yosd head! I meant for it to be some practice but I liked it too much X0

    34. My biggest hurdle now is buying a printer! I think its time with the amount of fine tuning I want to do for the neck hole and head size. In the long run I'll save money still scary though! XD

    42. I have my 3D printer built just wanting on a replacement bed piece because mine had bubbles!

      • x 1
    43. Oh wow, this revised version of Havana has stolen my heart!! The shift toward increased realism suits him really well, the updated sculpt has more subtlety and elegance (to my eye) without losing any of the personality and charm of your initial design. His expression is so lovely! I can't wait to see a test print once you get to that point.

    44. Oh my what a handsome boy :chibi
I love the way you've styled him!
I do love the added realism in the latest revision.

Dogwood is looking very handsome as well!

    45. @Gamine I'm happy to hear the original still shows through!

@AmariGem Thank you! I think the updated will sit better with my updated Dogwood!

    46. Updated Dogwood!

    47. I’ve now gotten braver and started to use my printer, the ender 3. So far no bad prints. I’ve also been working on yosd-sized black children characters.

I’ve sculpted a body to go along with the Yosd heads. I’ve also been working on SD Bodies. So my plans have changed from when I originally made this thread. I’m not sure the best path in terms of organizing it for the future but I still wanted to post an update.

    48. SO…

      So far…

I’ve sculpted a lot of things since my last update in 2020. I’ve stepped away from the idea of sculpting with selling in mind and it’s helped to just have fun making without feeling guilty for taking a stupid amount of time to get anything done >:3c

anyway I wanted to show the last prints I did for Dogwood! He is now two sculpts at different ages (and yet both not the age I was targeting akskfksk)
